How Much Again?
- Recently rebuffed in its attempt to hold the 2016 Summer Games in Chicago, the U.S. Olympic Committee does not plan to enter a U.S. city in the race for the 2020 Summer Games and remains uncertain about when it will next attempt to bring a Games to U.S. soil, USOC Chief Executive Scott Blackmun said Saturday morning.
"The cold and hard reality is Chicago spent approximately $80 million on its bid," Blackmun said. "It's going to be difficult to get U.S. cities to continue to invest to that level unless they think they have a realistic chance of winning. The [International Olympic Committee] sent us a message, loud and clear, that they don't want the Games to be in the United States."
$80 million? Weren't the previous totals like $70 million? $75 million? It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Or are the totals finally including the unmarked suitcases full of cash?

thank God that prick daley didn't get da'lympics.just think what would have transpired over the next 6 years.
although i do miss sayin *da'lympics* on your site.
everybody now...
da'lympics
da'lympics
da'lympics
even if succeeded, 80 million for two weeks of games. That's insane. How many police could that have bought. How much of that could've gone toward our pension?
It's very clear now why the meter deal went through so fast.... he needed cash to fund this stupid idea that 2 weeks of "games" would've saved this city and given him a lasting legacy.
How about managing you're spending instead.
I keep hearing from citizens and coworkers alike; "Where is all the money going?" Taxes are raised, veh stickers up, water bills up, the sale of the skyway, the parking meter sale, red light ticket revenue, meter maid revenue, etc, etc. AND we keep seeing city employees taking hits, ie: steets and san and others taking no pay furlough days, no contract for police, police equipment shoddy and cars in disrepair, no salt on streets, CTA unions being challenged, NO MONEY NO MONEY.
Where is it all going? Or where has it all gone? All I know is that I better pay my taxes, have a valid city sticker, and have paid all my parking tickets and water bill or else I face some sort of discipline.. Monetary of course.. A day in lieu.. or more.
Is this where all the money went? The Olympic "pipedream"? So now since we didnt get it, all the city workers have to suffer.
Thanks alot boss.
What really happened in Copenhagen????
Supt,
I know you read the blog, or your subordinates do. If you want POs in this local economy to recover, you would suggest to the Mayor that he allow us to obtain monies from our 457(b) accounts in deffered comp. Employees in a 401(k) are allowed to borrow their monies with tax ramifications.
Just an interesting idea, that may save alot of officers. Obtaining monies from a 457b) is perfectly legal contingent the City and their provider (PEBSCO) give permission. I realize taking monies may bring about tax ramifications. This may save alot police families Supt.

maybe that was the problem; the prick thought he could get by being a cheapskate.
So was the whole 70-80 million raised from private donations, and if so has anyone in media taken a look at the Chicago Olympic committee s books?
Remember when Mayor Daley (Richard da 2nd, Shortshanks) was running for mayor back in the
1980's, he said, it was foolish to spend million dollars on trying to get the IOC to look at your city. Fast forward to 2008 and he spends millions we do not have. We also did not get the Olympics! What a guy. Now that public transportation (CTA) service is short money, bus drivers laid off and services cut, and Chicago Pulic Schools will have to lay off more workers and techers because of budget short falls. Yet the aldercreatures of our fair city get pay raise after pay raise in a down economy, while we as public servants can not get a contract.
Any smart city would give these stupid, money losing Olympics a pass!
Your better off having the Super Bowl in your city if you can get it! Now that's a money maker!
But then again Chicago will NEVER get the Super bowl because we have a shitty outdoor stadium next to a cold ass lake in the wintertime! We should have taken notes from Dallas and Jerry Jones world! Now that is some money making $$$$ machine down there!
There already reports about the Vancouver Olympics losing money on top of a great national embarrassment of an athlete losing his life on an unsafe event!
The song and dance from the Olympic people has already started!

How does a citizen, chicago resident, request an audit of the olympic financial transactions?
It's our city.
The government works FOR us.
the mayor represents THE PEOPLE who elected him.
COWS FLY !
da mayer sayz so
Seriously why hasn't he and his cabal of closed door aldermen been indicted yet?
Jeez, give me $80 million and I can not give you the Olympics too...then I'll give you half back and you'll be 40 million to the good.....and so will I.... :-D
EIGHTY MILLION DOLLARS!!!!!!
$80,000,000 of DOCUMENTED spending!!
Spending of OUR tax dollars without even putting the idea to a vote!!
How in the hell can this asshole cry poor me when they recklessly dispose of moneys which should be used to improve the city!!!!
$80,000,000!! This sure would have helped the school system, transportation grid, infrastructure,oh and the protection and preservation of its citizens and property.
How do these people sleep at night.
Yeah, and how many coppers could that 80 million have hired? Instead shortshanks shorted the public. If this doesn't get him booted out of office nothing will. Just ignore the infrastrucure and chase some stupid ego dream at the expense of your own city. We can't get a raise because shorty blew the money. And what, dear citizens, do we have to show for it????? ZIP.
$80,000,000 dollars, that must be conservative estimate, surely daley spent more for all his cronies, and the bullshit chicago 2016 where he paid that meathead director over 150K for a shir job,and all her cronies WTF! All the tif money shiller alderthief is using 100's of millions for developing the shit area in her ward! The city obviously is not broke,ARBITRATOR THE CONTRACT PLEASE THANKS AS YOU CAN SEE ALL THE HIDDEN MONEY HAS!!

3/02/2010 03:12:00 Not to flame you office! But if you need your deferred comp money what did you spend on? You still have a job correct?
I sure hope the arbitrator knows that Daley had no trouble spending $80 million of tax payer money on his olympic scam while crying broke.
what about the Cost of michael Reese Hospital the city bought it now what. What for a connected to make out on and and the tax payers to take anothe hit
I agree with the post about Michael Reese
Hospital, which is rarely talked about. The city paid 85 million for it, which became 90 million after not getting the olympics.
They spent 10 million to tear down buildings that were potentially historical and could have been rehabbed instead for a bigger real estate value return.
Hows that for waste?
You know, I hate to say it, but 80 million will only buy you the salaries of 1052 coppers
(at $76000/year) for 1 year.
And since we all know that we are at least that many coppers short, the money was actually 'free'. See? it was budgeted, but we didn't have to spend it on what it was budgeted for, so its 'free' money. and I don't even have a degree in accounting... :)
