Off Duty Assist
An off-duty Chicago Police officer helped police apprehended two people suspected of shooting a 7-year-old girl in the head as she rode her scooter Wednesday afternoon on the South Side.
The girl was shot at 4:13 p.m. near East 80th Street and South Manistee Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
South Chicago District police Cmdr. Eric Carter said an off-duty officer witnessed the shooting and police apprehended a motorist and passenger in a car that fled the scene.
And a good job by the responding officers as well. The vast majority of police continue to do this type of work day in and day out. Professional even in the face of adversity.

Dept Commendation or better to the off duty that assisted in the arrest of the bad guy(s). Thanks office for being the police despite being off duty. The public, at least the law abiding public, appreciates what you do on a daily basis. Keep up the good work. The thin blue line is eroding.

When I came on in the early 80's, a gym instructor, Hope B., informed us all that she was not a U.S. citizen and had no intention of becoming one.
I know of at least three non-citizens on the force today.
In other words, you do NOT have to be a US citizen to be the police. You also don't have to be a US citizen to join our armed forces.

You DO NOT need to be a U.S. Citizen to be a Chicago Police Officer, or the U.S. Military for that matter. I have known several P.O.s who I am proud to have served with, who had "Green Cards" and thus had legal status to work.
I remember them having to get inked fingerprint cards for immigration and papers signed by the W.C. or D.C.s.
One the day when a member of our team took the Oath of Citizenship, we gave him a U.S. flag and a sweatshirt. The sweatshirt featured the comic strip dog Snoopy as Joe Cool, but the writting said, "Joe Citizen".

P.O. Bob Crane hurt pretty bad on a Segway accident. He was getting a refresher course when his wheel hit the curb, causing the segway to spin. He flew over the top and landed hard. Has 6 broken vertebrae and a shattered knee cap. He is at Lutheran General. Good guy, good worker. Keep him in your prayers for a good recovery. Be careful guys and girls. The segways can be very dangerous and offer little protection.

My father was a legal resident and volunteered to serve in Vietnam...he tried to re-enlist for a second tour but was denied due to injuries (hearing loss)...I guess your answer is that your parents were to busy dodging the draft...
My father is now a U.S. citizen and is still amazed how lazy and ignorant people are in this country.

The were the wrong guys and had noting to do with this tragic incident. They cooperated fully and it was determined that they were at a differant location at the time of the shooting.

All of us that were there knows that our whole District came through, including our bosses and the Commander. If they would send some more police to this place, we could really do some good work every day. The hotter it gets, the worst it will get!

No need to bust the balls of the ODPO for doing what they thought was right, even if the suspects were RWOC. Half the PO's I work with with would have buried their heads in the sand. I'm not a company man, but I will do what I can to help real citizens, on and off duty.

Now thats funny. I think you were trying to make a crack right, but you made yourself look even more stupid. Have facts and knowledge before you post. How could you not know you do not have to be a U.S. Citizen? Fenger has some openings and are trying to take the stupid to another educational level, try sitting in a class. It may give you a hand!
I went on line and watched the interview via 3 different news feeds after reading your posts here. I work midnights in 004 so I was at work looking for the fucking offenders and missed the news casts. He sounded fine. I have no idea what you are talking about. This sounds personal to me. Give it a rest and if his presence or him being in the spotlight bothers you that much, start looking for alternate employment because he will be around for a while. He is a young Commander. He is also a descent boss. I was kind of stand offish when he first came after hearing all of the rumble, but I found it was more CPD BS.
I just want to remind all of us on the midnight crew that we are all we have, be careful, it is getting hot, we don't have enough people assigned here on any watch and if the gun legislation issue passes, we will be even worse off. If the Superintendent is so interested in what we think and what we say then tell him this SCC, send police to Districts like 004. It is a descent place to work, we do have our fair share of shootings, but it is concentrated in certain areas, and we know where and we know why. This District is huge and I am sick of running from one end to the other. Let me not forget, can we get some descent cars? If you can't give us any, give us some PAPV's, Segways, unmarked, wagons whatever. I am sick of driving this smelly ass pool car every fucking day.
Now this last statement is with all due respect, the Forum out here in Area 2 was bullshit. If you are going to have an open forum for us, make it so we can write our comments down and we can pass them up so you will not know who said or asked what. This job is based strictly on who you know and who likes you. How can we challenge legitimate issues and ask challenging questions with bosses looking down our throats? Either make it where this is effective or cut this bullshit out. I think you just want to put on paper you held it; you know this is not an effective way of hosting an open forum while the people you directly work for are watching!

He knows how it feels to be a police officer on the streets and now he's a commander in a district which needs more police...so don't hate give the man his Kudos!!

Yes I take what you’ve said personally because when the department was trying to fire me, he took the time to give me the assistance and support I needed when I was faced with a bullshit allegation. It occurred when he was a Sergeant in Narcotics and guess what, my CR# was miraculously re-opened and I had to deal with more bullshit. Once again, he gave me the hand I needed. It pays to know the law and the general orders, and have the ability to articulate your actions appropriately. What I did was right; I initially did not explain "why" the way this "department" felt I should have. Thanks for the hand EC.

He is one of the very few bosses that are still on this job that is the real police. He is also not affiliated with any of the politicians or the reverends. He also will tell the brass the truth, which is why I am surprised they promoted him. Intelligent and articulate with nothing to lose? I worked for him in 003 and I wish everyday he was still here for so many reasons! He stood up for us to the Commander and Deputy Chief Mike Shields. They came out with a bullshit directive just because of him!
Do your homework before you post and next time, make it close to the truth! EC you are a class act!
