Off Duty Killed

In front of his home, in uniform. And retiring next month:
  • An off-duty police officer was shot and killed near 74th Street and Evans Avenue at about 6:20 a.m., police said.

A police detective on the scene said the officer was pronounced dead at 6:41 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and that he was coming home from a midnight shift.

He was outside cleaning the glass of his recently purchased 2010 black Buick when three suspects approached the detective said.

This again is terrible news. Officers be safe out there.

If you don't pack heat off duty, & bring a spare mag. yes you think sounds silly and no it would not have changed the outcome of recent events of this year. do it for your family, do it for yourself, and be safe always.

RIP Officer

Hmm... Officer Soderberg is killed. Then there's graffiti: we kill cops appearing. Then an off-duty officer is being harassed for being a cop. Now, this off duty officer is shot in front of his home because he was a police officer.

It's about to be as dangerous to be an officer in Chicago as it is to be a resident!

To the media, why are you not looking into the man power shortage on the Chicago Police Department? Why arent you questioning bosses i.e Jody, as to why so many Officers are being killed, and violence in this "great" city is so high? Why isnt anyone other than the Police noticing how bad this city has become?

Please be careful in all that you do.

RIP Officer, all PO's are suffering the loss of another brother, and another police family grieves. This should be a pivotal moment at city hall. This J-Fled experiment has now resulted in nine (9) chicago police officers deaths as crime has skyrocketed under his watch. J-Jag counts them as nine photo ops and nine more reasons to dress up as the police.

God speed officer.

This is what happens when you let the animals run the zoo. It is about time the City takes the shackles of these police officers and let them have the freedom to do their jobs without the fear of losing their jobs or worse, going to jail. The criminals no longer fear the police as they know that the police's hands are tied. Police officers in uniform are now being targeted. Daley and Weis needed to step up and stop catering to the voting majority and do what is best for this City, critics, reverends and liberals, be damned. Maybe they just don't care as they are both on the way out. This once great City is going down the shitter. I can't wait to retire and move out of this God forsaken state. Old Mayor Daley has to be turning over in his grave over the way his son is driving this City to the ground.

I for one am so glad I can have a weapon in my home now to protect myself. I will jump through all the hoops they put out there, because when someone tries to break into my home, I will aim right for the space between the eyes!

Another Brother in uniform shot to death..............

He was returning home after guarding the Mayors house on the 1st watch. He was assigned to 001 and about to retire in August. Maybe this will be the wake up call to the Mayor that we need more P.O.'s I am sure the Mayor and his wife slept well last night knowing that this P.O. was guarding their house. I am sure the P.O.'s family will not sleep well this evening or for years to come.

We've become a disposable commodity to this city. The politicians use us for cover while fleecing the citizens, the criminal element that reviles us , are afforded all the legal/illegal remedies to neutralize our effect. All we can do is watch as the once vibrant city and proud police department decay beyond redemption, where respect and honor are no longer considered virtues but impediments by the thieving politicians and the criminal elements(one in the same). Brothers and sisters keep your heads down and weather the storm, this too shall pass, as the sun returns after a tempest.

How about banning criminals?

I know it's a radical idea, but it's time that the Cook county states attorney and Cook county courts, stop cutting deals and handing out lenient sentences.

Sending street level dealers to prison for long stretches while robbery, burglary, agg. batt., and uuw offenders
get charges lowered, is bullshit.

On top of that mayor stupid cut the pd to shit so now we have a criminal population that knows there is little time
for doing the crime.

First, let me say God Bless you Brother and may you rest in peace. Second, when is this going to end? We all got together to march around for contract issues. When are we going to stand together and let everyone know that changes need to be made? Remember when everyone used to say "Just get home to family safely at the end of your shift." We can't even do that anymore. I am so outraged. The mayor doesn't care, Weis doesn't understand so he can't ever care as much as we do. We have ASAs that won't approve felony charges for people that fight the police, judges that give TRIPLE probation, and a "think tank" that cares more about manipulating crime statistics than the safety of those of us on the front lines. I know this is a time of mourning for us all, so I understand if this isn't posted right away or at all. I just had to get it out. How much more heartbreak are we and our loved ones expected to endure?

And not quite off topic... I also read this on chicagobreakingnews.com.

"3 Arrested for harassing off-duty police officer
Three men were arrested early this morning for throwing objects at an off-duty police officer's vehicle, after he identified himself as an officer, police said.

"About 2:45 a.m., an off-duty police officer was driving an unmarked vehicle in the 2200 block of West 19th Street when three men began to harass the officer, Monroe District police said.

"The officer announced who he was, but it did not stop the three men--reportedly members of a gang--to throw bottles and other objects at the officer's vehicle, police said.

"The officer remained at the scene and waited for back-up to arrive. When more officers came, the men, whose ages were not immediately available, were arrested, police said.

"No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating."

As Officers we are in a day and time where we must become more resilient. People need to understand that all the problems of the "hood" are not what has caused these days to come nigh. There are only two entities who one can serve in the world. The people who have committed these acts have consciously chosen to serve the one who represents evil. What we as G-d/righteous/good serving individuals must do is be ready for war, and take that war to evil, causing fear, and terrorizing it to the point of no return, in our Fathers name, until it has NO place to reside amongst us. We must dispatch the minions of Satan back to the place where they can only roam amongst each other. If anyone must fall, and give there life as part of this cause, let it those of darkened hearts and souls, for they have no place amongst the children of G-D. Be aware, protect yourself, and each other. This is a fight that we MUST win. We must be strong for one another, and stand aside each other vigilantly as we take on this war. God bless my friend Officer Thomas Wortham IV, Officer Thor Soderborg, and Officer Michael R. Bailey. God bless all officers that can see past what our media "frenzy" presents to us, and know and understand what we are truly facing.

This is the result of our inability to properly do our job. Officers on the street are afraid to properly challenge and arrest the gangbangers because they know they will not be backed by our command staff. All but a few of our real leaders are gone. Either removed in the periodic purges of J=Fled or forced to retire in disgust. Others that have the institutional knowledge and ability are out in the districts trying their best but knowing they are fighting a losing battle. We need to confront he animals on the street for the sake of our families, ourselves and the decent people that still populate this city. But how can we do what is needed when we are undermanned, undertrained, outgunned, and every move we make is scrutinized and disected by those that are looking for a scapegoat. Our young officers are in fact scared to be the police and the older ones have learned that there is no benefit to putting their lives on the line only to be told it is not enough. Cozzi is enough proof that standing up the criminals can ruin your life. There is also the fact that we have no hope of advancement without clout and a mayor that hates us. We need to do something or we will continue to lose on the streets and our job will become more dangerous by the day as proven by recent events. I don't pretend to have any answers I only know that each day when i go to roll call I promise to myself that I will try to do something to ensure that my fellow police officers will be safe and the criminals of this city will feel some pain. In almost 29 years this seems to be the worst summer I have seen. R.I.P. and God Bless all of out fallen brothers and sisters.

If the police reduce efforts, because of all the bs with the asshole mayor and his cohorts, or the bs by the jag off bosses, the police are ultimately the ones to suffer. This terrible tragedy is a direct result of decisions made by richardmdaley and carried out by jodypweis.

The spilled blood is on their hands. They handcuffed the police, they caused the streets to be given back to the savages. They have given rise to the "no fear" attitude in the hearts of the young thugs while planting seeds of doubt in all of Chicago's police officers.

This also is the result of years of bad court decisions, years of thugs filing and winning lawsuits against police, years of the likes of bloodsucker lawfirms feeding off city payouts and also the result of imprisoning a hard working officer for no good cause other than to "send us a message."

We got the message. You look now at what you have caused with that message.

Supt. weis, we know you don't have our back. Who has yours?

That piece of vitriol aside, my deepest condolences to the Baily family.

Now what mayor mumbles? Do we now march in protest of violence? Who do we call to get the mess you created straightened out?

Who fixes things now?

from the linked Sun-Times article:

"Daley was stunned and outraged when he heard of the officer’s death, said mayoral press secretary Jacquelyn Heard.

“The mayor’s thoughts are the same as everyone else’s. How could this happen? Why is it still happening? Why hasn't our collective anger reached the point where we've been able to put an end to it.

“How much more of this tragic and needless violence will it take for our anger to take hold when even a uniformed officer returning home from a day’s work can't even make it inside.

“Another uniformed police officer gunned down. Another guardian of public safety killed. For what? A car that the offender didn't even get. It's unreal.”"

Hypocrates would be proud.

As much as I would like to blame the current CPD regime, and they hold their responsibility too, the REAL issue is the courts. It is far easier to shoot your way out and take your chances in court that some sympathetic judge or jury will judge you, or at the beginning, some inept or lazy state's attorney will get called to handle your case.

The Cook County justice system is creating these animals. Not a one of the shooters of the last officers killed in the line of duty were first at bat. Each had a long history of knowing that in Cook County ONLY the criminals stand a chance. If they win in court, they get a lottery ticket to sue the city. If they lose, they get to appeal or more frequently get time considered served or minimal sentences where they get to hang out with their buddies, gain some cred in their gang and work on developing better tactics.

The cops - damned if they do, damned if they don't and the courts ready, willing and able to hold them accountable - sympathy is saved for the thugs that victimize us all.

Right now, too many cops are getting killed or hurt too damn often! The last three have hit the officers where we feel comfortable, on known ground.

Be aware always - the only way to keep yourself safe. We are not invincible - particularly without our radios or backup. Stay safe.

Daley, j-fled the Franken-fed, the alderfools, runnin' dog rev'runs, the media and the Cook County court system are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT LOSING CONTROL OF THE STREETS OF CHICAGO.

In their zeal to destroy CPD, they have sent a message to the criminal element that they can murder, rob and rape with impunity and they are doing JUST THAT!

Daley Inc. doesn't care how many citizens are maimed and killed. He has no interest in doing ANYTHING to get in front of this... As long as CPD does yeoman work keeping the bloodshed confined to the Southside & Westside. When the shit spills over in vivid fashion in Lincoln Park and Downtown, shortshanks will peel off some of that bankroll he's hoarding and hire... Not one second before that.

These mutts are bold beyond belief and they all say the same thing. That franken-fed is here to fuck the Police up in any and every way he can on Daley's orders.

More coppers stripped and p.o.w'd than ever.

More coppers paying punitive damages on cases that would be thrown out anywhere else other than Cook County.

Coppers being head-hunted and disparaged thanks to the Daley Inc. media spin machine.

all anyone has to do is make a bullshit allegation against a Policeman and that will be the end of your career or even your freedom.

Battery to Police Officers are at an all time high because these mutts KNOW that even if they lose the fight, they get paid in a law suit, the copper has to pay damages and face the prospect of franken-fed & i.p.r.a actively seeking their separation and imprisonment.

With all that said...

You don't think these mutts wouldn't start actively targeting Police Officers thanks to the current regime?

Nobody in a position to give a fuck about us and it actually counts toward something, give a fuck.

The bloodshed and mayhem on the streets and the active targeting of Policemen by assassins is an expense Daley and Franken-fed are willing to write off in order to achieve their goal.

Oh well... As long as Policemen continue to die bravely and with great honor, king shorty, j-fled, masters(x3), brust, o'keefe et al are happy. Another photo-op, another chance to profane our uniform made holy by sacrifice. Another chance to point and laugh at our bloody tears of outrage.

It is open season on the Police and we're on our own...

We say if people want the cuddly, friendly, non-scary, non-aggressive Police then too bad.

We invoke Rule #24...

"Be polite. Be professional, but have a plan to kill everyone you encounter should it be necessary".

And we add, "Leave no offender alive to reap the benefit of additional stolen oxygen and hitting the ghetto lottery jackpot."

...We can hear the moaning and hand wringing now. "Wah, that's too mean and vicious!"

The reality is there are beings in human for that only understand a hard, forceful response.

Nobody has the political spine to give CPD their mojo back...

Look for this stuff to continue if not get worse.

Everyone has to make a decision about how to handle a situation when they are in it and no one should second guess that decision. But I do want to present a different option.

My son is on the job. We were having a conversation a few years ago about his decision to stop carrying off-duty. He said he'd been to enough robberies/turned homicides to know that resisting the robbery could be fatal. He said he knew he'd be embarrassed if he were robbed and didn't stop it but he also knew that if he had his gun, he was likely to resist (being compelled to act like the police and not a "citizen") and that would make him more likely to be killed than just giving up what he had.

Yes, it would be a bitch to be the police and be robbed of your possession you worked hard for. You would likely get teased and you'd be embarrassed. But it might be a good idea to think about whether resisting is a good idea when someone has taken you by surprise and has a gun.

If they only want your property, which is probably insured, remember that it is better to be embarrassed than dead. I'm just presenting something to think about and I am definitely NOT second guessing the decisions these officers made.

I feel like I am part of the CPD family too and I have cried for each of these officers and their families too. I know that whatever happens on the street, the most important thing to me is that my son stay alive. I can imagine the grief these families feel and I know that I don't want to there. with all due respect, your 'option' is a fantasy, because it puts your trust in their intentions.

and their intentions cannot be trusted.

ever.

regardless of the mistaken logic your son has chosen to use.

the actual option is to not be surprised.

not being surprised means not being caught off guard.

not being caught off guard means always being on guard.

always being on guard means never feeling 'safe' when in an unsafe environment.

and that requires recognizing that there are few, if any, environments that are truly safe enough to not be on guard.

this ain't Kansas, Dorothy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now open season on police officers. The fight for civilization has been lost and the savages have won. If the savages feel safe in attacking uniformed and armed police officers, how do you think they perceive the rest of the citizenry which is unarmed and defenseless? Week after week we read about verdicts in federal court awarding millions to Pookie or Ray Ray because he was strip searched or kept in a holding cell for more than 48 hours. Plaintiffs' lawyers are awarded millions in fees for representing these poor, downtrodden, misguided honor students. However, the judges rarely find Pookie guilty or set a high bond for Ray Ray even though he has multiple priors for UUW. If a Police Officer slaps a jerk in the gob after he is spat upon, he loses his job and gets four years hard time (Cozzi). If a gangbanger beats his baby mama, shoots someone in a drive by, and invades a senior's home, he is out on the street in a New York minute. The liberal A-Holes who have taken over the reins of the government including the criminal justice system have visited this upon us. The system has been turned on its head. Woe betide the police officer who tries to actually do his/her job. You will be sued, a CR # will be issued, you will be sent to callback and stripped of police powers, you will likely be given time off and lose pay, and, if your federal suit is lost, you are personally responsible for punitive damages.
Who in their right mind would want to do real police work in this atmosphere? The surprising thing is that there are so many honest, brave and dedicated souls who still take their oath to uphold the law and serve and protect the citizens seriously.
The voters better wake up and vote out the clowns who appoint the liberal judges who live in Glencoe and Evanston and who have only met minorities while they are providing maid or gardening service. This is NOT to say that minorities are the problem. No group has a corner on crime or being an A-hole. Minorities, for the most part, are the victims of others in the minority. But the self loathing liberal judges who have no real world experience are the racists in assuming that just because someone is a minority they are in need of coddling. There are many minorities who have made it on their own merit to the the top of every organization and occupation in this country from the military to law enforcement to medicine and law. They do not need nor want some sad, sorry white judge going easy on a criminal because he feels the criminal, as a minority, is incapable of conforming his behavior to the dictates of society. It is the epitome of racist thought to think that all minorities are lacking the will or discipline to be law abiding so they must be held to a differnet standard. Where are Jesse and Al when blacks are being mowed down in record numbers on the streets of Chicago by other blacks? Nowhere to be seen because they can't make any money from speaking out against black on black crime. No Anheuser-Busch to extort for a beer distributorship here, nothing to see, move along. RIP Brothers Bailey, Soderburg et al. and God Bless the CPD and have mercy on the unarmed citizens of Chicago.

Following the Bulls championship in the late 90s, the savages were out of control on the west side. Deputy Chief Eddie King stated "take back my streets, I'll handle the CRs". We did. CPD will never hear those words from another boss again. These are truly sad times for a once great Department.

Dear Supt. weis,

It should by now be as obvious to you as it is to all of us (real police officers) that the solutions you offered have taken this police department in the opposite direction from where it needs to be going.

How many more of us have to die because the savages are more empowered than the police?

Are you a man of your word? Are you a man of honor? Of dignity?

Then recall your promise and understand there is nothing more you can do here but to continue to make things worse.

Recall your promise and submit your resignation now for the greater good of the Chicago Police Department.

We need a strong leader. You are not it. We will deal with the man who gave you the job at a later date. Feb 22, 2011 to be exact.

If today, Sunday, July 18, 2010 does not infuriate, mobilize, galvanize and solidify our shared sense of purpose then nothing ever will.

weis and daley must go. It is as simple ass that. I will devote my every waking moment from now on to make sure richardmdaley is finally defeated at the polls.

Officers and friends and relatives of Officers, Firefighters and Paramedics, sewer workers and electricians, we must work hard to defeat the powers that have given us such corrupt and ineffectual leadership.

The race of our next mayor or police superintendant does not concern me in the least. What is in their heart and in their head does concern all of us. We have been lied to and stolen from enough.

Now is the time to get into action and make it happen!

New leadership NOW!

And not the same tired old horses trotted out all shined up.

New leadership NOW!

My heart is heavy and in pain for the family of my brother in arms. This can happen to any of us anytime, on and off duty so be safe. The time has come for all of us to unite as one and apply political pressure on these creeps that represent us.

We so often cannot even agree where to go to lunch, but my friends if not now, when? It's time for the "REAL CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN" not these career minded political hacks. We need to move on these life long money grubbin snakes and come together. We can if we work together become a formidible lobbying force. This Officer's death lays squarely on the leaders of our City, our Department, and these arrogant Judges who let these scumbags back on the streets. I will bet my next check that each of these bastards have long criminal records. So let's stop lettin this happen by getting out and voting these useless tools out of office and demanding impeachment of incompetent Judges.

To 7/18/2010 06:40:00 PM:

That victim mentality of your son is reflective of the general attitude of society that allows this to continue. Take it to it's logical extension and your son will have to allow the escape of someone armed with a gun even when he is on-duty. "Wouldn't want to risk a confrontation, maybe someone else will do the job for me."

The presence of a fucking gun on your hip does not "compel" one to act like the police. You either are the police, or you are not. My guess is the three most recently killed officers would have tried to resist regardless of whether they were armed, or not. My other guess is your son has not seen his share of "enough robberies/turned homicides to know that resisting the robbery could be fatal". He just probably isn't the police.

If some ancient dry cleaner owner won't back down, your trained and armed son shouldn't either, as evidenced by the recent (16 JUL) story of how Kim Ja Moon, aged 66 and 4'10", robbed at gunpoint in her business:

"Kim credited her viewing of the television show “Cops” with her refusal to obey the gunman's order to move to the secluded rear of the business.

“If I go back of store, maybe I die,” she said Thursday. “I stay here and fight,” she added, placing her hand firmly on the counter to show how she stood her ground.

Asked if she was worried about any consequences from resisting two armed robbers, she shakes her head.

“No, I'm not worried. He go to jail.” "

Perhaps more importantly, she doesn't become part of the continuously victimized herd.

This blog will weave together two incidents, one tragic and the other minor but telling. First, we will deal with the tragedy.

In yet another tragic incident, an off-duty, uniformed police officer was shot and killed on this day. The fallen officer was identified as Michael R. Bailey.

The other incident will not receive the same level of publicity, but it goes to the same conclusion: that is gang members are becoming more brazen and increasingly willing to challenge police officers. As the above story illustrates, the three men who confronted the fallen officer knew he was the police. He was in uniform. There was no doubt of his status as a police officer. Yet the bad guys confronted him anyway. Not only did they confront him, they killed him.

In a less serious, but telling, incident, three men were arrested early this morning for throwing objects at an off-duty police officer's vehicle, after he identified himself as an officer. About 2:45 a.m., an off-duty police officer was driving an unmarked vehicle in the 2200 block of West 19th Street when three men began to harass the officer. The officer announced who he was, but it did not stop the three men--reportedly members of a gang--to throw bottles and other objects at the officer's vehicle. The officer called for assistance and remained at the scene and waited for back-up to arrive. When more officers came, the men were arrested. Read Article

What do these incidents demonstrate? They demonstrate that gang bangers are challenging police officers. A career criminal just killed Officer Soderberg. Gang members killed Officer Wortham. Gang members were likely involved in this killing. Gang members were involved in the bottle throwing incident. When gang members brazenly challenge and kill police officers, they are crossing the line from criminal to extremist.

May God bless you Officer Bailey. My thoughts and prayers go out to your soul and your family. Thank you for your service to the city. May you rest in peace. God speed!

I have been warning police officers for years that the bold, brazen gang members would increasingly challenge the police. While these incidents do not necessarily illustrate a trend, they are disconcerting. Connect the dots, folks. The source and impact of these events should tell you that things are changing. Do not be blindsided. In the end, the need for diligence, awareness and caution is growing. Be prepared and be careful out there!

Ive been the police for 22 plus years............ the bad guys are out of fucking control.
Its not just the politicians fault, or even Weis;s fault. We the police are also to blame. Everytime we do something stupid, like beat someone on video or pull a gun on a cab driver it makes it that much harder on the working police. We are not society's darlings and we haven t been since I ve been on the job.
Everytime we screw up it makes this job harder. I don t mean the honest mistakes because we re working because we are trying to do the right thing, I mean when we pull the stupid shit we all know is wrong. well when we know it s wrong so does the rest of the world.
Our raises sucked fair enough we need to do something about that. But trying to get chicago police to ORGANIZE AND DO ANYTHING IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.
FOP is weak and always has been. The Sgt. s PBPA is just as bad if not worse. I don t know anything about the Lt.s or Capt.s but I ll guess that they are quite humble also.
The leadership on the street is almost laughable and I m a sgt. My peers for the most part could nt think their way out of a wet paper bag let alone write their way out of one. The Lt.s are mostly out for themselves like the rest of this police department, and the ones that suffer the most are the working p.o.s who have no where to turn.............. but there are a whole lot of p.o.s who should also find some other way to make a living......

the main thing I know is there is another policemans funeral to go to, and im sick of going to them

It's now 2139 hrs and still no word from Weis. I know you're out of town with your own family right now - but WE are your family, too. And one of your family was just murdered - the third in 2 months. WHERE ARE YOU? You parrot words like "Leadership", yet you display NONE. You are supposed to FIGHT for us - why do you never FIGHT for us? We are good and loyal officers. We have dedicated our lives to serving this city, and some of us are killed. Lack of respect for the police, wonton criminal acts, violence should be condemned - verbally and then actually. This Department has become a shell of itself - we have no manpower and no resources. We must fight - you must lead. We all see clearly now that this you cannot do. You are an egoist and a political hack - a shill for the hall. We, the police officers of Chicago - deserve better than you.

God Bless you Officer Bailey. You deserved so much more than this.

Growing up you never messed with the police, especially CPD. Now, it's open season on any police officer. It seems especially in he city. CPD you aren't feared anymore.

Not a word of condemnation by Jesse & Co. Let's face the truth
My brothers and sisters in Blue.
Nobody really cares other than us. A black suspect is killed by police, and there's rioting. Jesse & so many others are out for our blood. But any Black, Hispanic, or White officer are murdered in cold blood and nothing happens. We stand in formation.. tears streaming down our cheeks.... hoping, praying that something will be done. We never stand again. That our leaders care as much as we do. Oh, they give good speeches...But the next day they are back kicking us in the crotch for not being politically correct when dealing with the public. The news media eats it all up with " look at what the police did " on WGN at News at 9 PM.

J-Fed, Mayor, Council...read my lips. " We, the police, ARE NOT FEARED anymore. " When the Keepers of the Peace are no longer feared chaos, death and destruction is inevitable. Look at the Southern border and how out of control it is. What's happened in L.A. is now happening here in Chicago. What's J-Fed gonna do ? More speeches ... The mayor ? He'll blame gun control being overturned by the Supreme Court. Jesse ? Can't stir the stink cause it's a cop...
He'll say nothing.

This sounds like a great idea 15 years ago or in a real city and county. The reality is after we lock them up nothing happens time and time again and they know it. Big deal 5-6 hours in lock-up and then no PC, No approval, etc. etc. They have the support of the Mayor just by seeing how he treats and thinks about his police department.
