More Coyotes

  • A coyote was spotted this morning near a dog park at Huron Street and the Chicago River.

The coyote was apparently wearing a monitoring collar and was allowed to go on its way.

It was on the highest point of a grassy knoll at Huron and the river – walking around and looking for food....

  • β€œIt was probably a female that was radio-collared last spring along the north part of Chicago,” says Dr. Stan Gehrt of Ohio State University is principal investigator of the Cook County Coyote Project.
Well, if it was being monitored, wouldn't they be able to confirm it via the tracking collar? Or is this like a "Blue Light Camera" where the City puts them up everywhere, but no one is actually watching anything? It would explain a lot.

There are two in Hyde Park that are often seen hunting at night as a team throughout the Jackson Park and U of C campus area.

Speaking of "Coyote Ugly", is it just me, or is this mayoral election turning into one of the most embarrassing and ugliest little parties this town has hosted in quite some time?

How incredibly laughable is it for some of these HUGE political egos to crawl out from under their rocks and declare their intention to run or, worse yet, have their "spokesperson" float their name out there. Just because some of these jerks managed to redraw boundary lines so that they created voting districts tailor made for them, does not mean that other, more intelligent voters would consider them for a heartbeat as a serious contender for Mayor of Chicago!

These "dogs" have caused way more trouble out of state. They killed a teenage girl in Canada in 2000, and are "shoot on sight" in many farming and ranching areas. They are a serious threat to children, pets and livestock. I had a pair of them cross the road in front of me, in a snow storm( southwest suburbs), while walking my dog. They doubled back and out flanked us, crossing the road again to get a better look at us on the way back. They had no fear of my Stinger flashlight. Do not under estimate these nasty little dogs when they are in groups of 2 or more. They can be taken out by a .38 or 9mm with no problem. Even a .22 rifle if you hit them in the right place. They carry canine distemper virus and rabies per our local vet. They get this from contact with infected racoons.

The radio tracking works in open areas and is relatively short range. Downtown? Not so much.

Maybe he was looking for Burt Natarus.

Saw one running around 11th Dist. A few months back. He looked scared shitless. He must have moved on because of the competition from the other ghetto wolves, two and four legged.

Whatever you do, don't call animal control, they aren't going to do anything about it. We had a deer running in traffic a week or so ago out in 003. We were able to corral it into a fenced in empty lot, where a goofy sgt with a dog noose was trying to snare it, but I digress. Called animal control at like 1am. They actually woke someone to come out, but when the guy arrived and found out that the deer was not injured, he told us that animal control doesn't deal with "large game" that is not severly injured and he left. So did we. Left the deer in the lot and went on our merry way. All they would do to an injured animal is kill it anyhow, according to the animal control agent. They aren't allowed to tranquilize and relocate them. So exactly what good is animal control if they don't deal with "large game?"

I saw one running right down the middle of Harlem Ave (4900 Block) at 0330 one morning.

I told the wife not to let the dogs or kids out alone, I have a BB rifle at the ready at all times, in case a dog or one of my kids gets threatened.

I see half eaten rabbits (a good thing!!!) all over my neighborhood all the time.

The Coyotes that end up downtown are from a small group that calls the lakefront from around Diversey harbor to Meigs field home. The are mostly harmless, and feed on the ever growing population of rats and rabbits downtown. The conservation police have tagged most of them. They are not a threat to the downtown rich folks lap dogs b/c most of them carry thier stupid dogs around or push them along in a stroller.

Animal control is truly begging for privatization. They may actually get people in there that know something about animals.

Trivia time: Operations manager Mark Rosenthal was in charge of large mammals at LPZ. At least two elephants died under his watch.

--------------------------

Whatever goes on in Wendels Tavern is nothing compared to the blind-eye drug dealing that occurs on 135th between Brandon and Baltimore. The big brick Section 8 building on 135th and Brandon and the white apartments on the corner of 135th and Brandon. About the only redeeming part about that part of town is Pudgy's Pizzeria.

Shame, too, since Hegewisch is generally worth saving. It might not be a shiny type place, but it's a decent blue collar community with a lot of very good people left... but alas, Section 8 influx + understaffed police = limited resource allocation = deteriorating neighborhood = good people leaving = more affordable for the shitbirds.

Vicious cycle. Hope they stop it.

Its ok if she eats carrots and chills in the hood. Its nice that you get that warm fuzzy feeling from feeding her and thats ok too.
The problem comes in when she teams up with 2 or more coyotes and goes after someones dog or child. Peace be unto you and Shirley.
