Pay Box Thief Caught

  • A West Side man told police he stole and then busted open four 200-pound pay-and-display parking meters from city streets so he could support his drug habit, authorities said.

“I dropped my crack pipe,” Jeffery Kaput, 38, said when he was pulled over late Monday in the 5500 block of West Augusta, a police report alleged.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Kaput held in lieu of $200,000 bail Wednesday on four counts of felony theft. Kaput, of the 5500 block of West Cortez, was also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

You'd think the dope boys would get tired of some hype paying for his rock in quarters. Their pants were already down around their thighs. After Jeffrey stopped by, they were around their ankles and they couldn't hop fences worth a damn.

He's my hero! Fuck LAZ & fuck da midget. What used to take 2 seconds to park and throw a few coins in the meter, now takes 5 minutes. A quarter doesn't get you shit, at most 12-14 minutes, outside the Loop.

You have to walk half way down the block or across the street to find one of those damn boxes. Oh yeah, and don't forget the panhandlers who have now discovered this new golden opportunity and have taken up residence next to these things!

Yeah, that's a shame. I was going to suggest a legal defense benefit at Bourbon Street.

Now the guy that takes out the red light cameras will be the greatest hero this town has seen since...well we haven't had any great heroes, but he'll be one, damn it.

A great job was done by 023 Tac guys the other night who spotted the guys who had committed over 30 armed robberies. A lengthy car chases ensues, the officer on the radio was calm as could be giving out the route and cars from 023,19,18,13,12 helped apprehend the 3 offenders.
Thanks to everyone involved, Area 3 Detective.

SCC, this (lengthy) article has been getting passed around the blogosphere, and it covers the Chicago parking deal pretty much in-depth:

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/222206

Some of you guys might be surprised to see where the money is now going. Most of you guys would not be surprised to hear that 40 of 45 aldermen who voted for the deal refuse to talk to reporters about it.

Does anybody else wonder if they just paid off a craziness to confess? I mean I have seen crackheads do superhuman feats of thievery for little return, but stealing an entire paybox for maybe 20-30 bucks in change? Why not just break into a house? Burglary is too good for the white crackheads?

This chase was "old school police work" at its finest. Tac guys with a sharp eye spot the offender in a car and the chase is on. A seargeant with brass balls allows it. And lastly, responding officers work as a team to grab these animals. Once in a while you actually feel proud to be a police officer, this was one of them.

In the UK and Europe, they burn the "Gatsos," the speed cameras. Sling a gasoline-soaked tire around the thing, and up it goes.

No foolin'. It's not one guy doing it, either. It's flat-out guerrilla warfare. Pages and pages of photos here --

That is hard to do.

Despite the Mayor, despite the Superintendent, despite everything -- still the Real Police.

Way to go!

Everyone is a little safer today.

Don't get too cocky about it. Thank God it all worked out alright. And we're all glad that you lakefront coppers got to do your part to catch the mutts, but if some 'innocent' got struck and/or killed during that pursuit, it would all be a different story , and you know it. Say a prayer that with all the police crashes that have occurred in the past two weeks, none of that happened in this instance.
