Rumor Central

Might as well kill a few of these that keep popping up.

300 open death investigations? It doesn't seem plausible, but we've heard stranger ones:
  • About a year ago at the area there was an announcement at roll calls for the det's to check their death investigation case's. Downtown called and related that there were over 300 death cases that were not investigated and to please check with the morgue to either close the case or reclassify it as homicide upon the finding. Never heard anything more. News people check it out.
For some reason the number "7" sticks in our head - seven cases reclassified as mysterious enough to warrant further investigation? Any detective want to comment? We imagine in the vast majority of instances, the cases were closed.

==============

Interesting rumor:
  • Penny's ex has been spouting off that he got a $375,000.00 pay off after hiring Lovey & Lovey. Said the Department was in a hurry to get it out of the headlines.
We thought that the City Council had to approve any lawsuit payouts over a certain amount. We don't recall anything like this in the Council minutes, so it might be a bad rumor. But it wouldn't be surprising that someone costing the city hundreds of thousands of dollars suffers no ill effects from their bad decision making.

CORP COUNCIL APPROVES THE SETTLEMENT AND THEN HAS THE OTHER PARTY SIGN OFF ON AGREEMENT AND NON-DISCLOSURE CLAUSE.

THE CITY COUNCIL THEN QUICKLY APPROVES THE MATTER AFTER A VERY SHORT HEARING DUE TO THE NON-DISCLOSURE AGREEMENT.

IT ONLY POP UP IN THE MEDIA WHEN 1 OF THE ANTI POLICE ALDERMAN LEAK THE MATTER TO THE MEDIA.

As far as the Death Investigations, those are mostly just cases that the ME deferred the cause and manner awaiting toxicological studies, or further studies by them. The dicks then suspend the case and forget about them. These are eventually closed non-criminal.

OT - China Fired Missile Seen In Southern California

"...intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia."

The Death Investigation thing is not worth the bandwidth of this thread. 99.5% of those open cases were suspended pending Toxicology testing and further medical studies, as stated by the previous poster. These are all non criminal cases and should not even involve the Dept.

People die from natural causes every day, it's a part of life.

The remaining .5% of the cases were cases that the Department was never notified by the Medical Examiners Office that MAY or MAY NOT be Homicides and required further investigation. The total was 5 cases. Again until the ME makes that notification to the Dept. the case remains a death investigation.

ALL of the cases have now been closed, updated or reclassified. This is done every year to make sure that the cases don't get overlooked. Out of the thousands of Death investigation cases handled by the Dept. each and every year to have several hundred cases open at any given time is just the way that it works.

To imply that the Dept. and/or the
Detectives have done something wrong or neglected their duty just
shows the ignorance of some people on this Dept.

If you want to call attention to something lets talk about the THOUSANDS of open Aggravated Batteries and Robberies that are open or suspended.

Violent crimes against people, the citizens of Chicago that go unsolved because the community as a whole does not give a shit and refuse to help the Police. Thousands of violent crimes that are never brought to justice because the Dept and the Detective Division is understaffed to a dangerous level.

Robbery and Burglary detectives who get 10-12 new cases every day, even on their days off. You return to work after your weekend and surprise 40 new cases in your box.

Homicide Detectives that get assigned a new homicide every two or three days. This on on top of all the Agg. Batteries and yes the Dreaded DEATH INVESTIGATIONS.

So before you try to imply that someone dropped the ball. Stop in at one of the Areas and find out what the Detectives actually do and the Challenges they face every day.

People tend to forget that those hundreds of case reports that are generated every day by the Officers working in the Districts go to the Areas to be investigated by the Detectives. EVERY ONE OF THEM!

If the 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th and 21st Dist each generate 125 case reports in any given 24 hour period. That's 625 new cases each day. Now divide that by 175 Detectives in Area 1 that's 3.6 new cases a day that need to be investigated. Now if 1/3 of those detectives are RDO, vacation or in court. Now you have 90 Detectives and the case load increases to 7 new cases a day per Detective.

And you want to make a BIG DEAL about a few hundred suspended NON CRIMINAL DEATH INVESTIGATIONS!

Get back in your Beat car and go wright some more reports

Precise explanation of what happens with all case reports generated in the detective areas. Thank you sir.

Because of the lack of manpower and no overtime rule, case reports assigned to the detectives are processed quickly, like factory work. It is not what the detectives want to do, but it is what they are ordered to do.

Thank the democrats, citizens.

In the cases that I had that were suspended this was an oversight by or change in the way the morgue does reports. An apparent natural or pending tox case is suspended by the investigating detective. Usually someone at the morgue would do a morgue supplemental when the results were known from the autopsy and then the investigating detective closes the case. This wasn't done and the cases were then forgotten about. Probabley the guy who does the morgue reports retired or went on the medical. The city that works!
