Runner-up Gery Chico tonight called Rahm Emauel to acknowledge Emanuel's lead is insurmountable and he will be Chicago's next mayor.
"We've elected a mayor tonight," Chico told supporters. "I want with all of my heart for Rahm Emanuel to be successful as mayor. We need that, ladies and gentlemen.”
While Emanuel has yet to declare victory, he was well above the 50 percent benchmark he needed to avoid a runoff election.

Northsiders surrendered as they are known to do by June every year.

I think it is much worse than Bloomberg west. If it were Bloomberg west things wouldn't be that bad. Bloomberg negotiates police contracts much quicker than Shortshanks ever did.Also NY is much sounder fiscally than Chicago. The NY police pension is sounder and permits a greater percentage after 20 years. rarely do NYPD officers do the 29 or more that is common in our crappy and poor city. It is an environment where an officer accused and charged with shoving his baton into the analy area of an arrestee during an arrest can beat the civil and criminal cases resulting from that allegation, as happened a year or two ago. Juries in NY believe the NYPD and the public shows them some respect, even in ultra-liberal Manhattan. In our conty politicians campaign on their willingness to prosecute us crimally, as did Anita Alvarez. Chicago also pays out in lawsuits much more than NY or LA. Cook County juries hate us and Cook County Judges sentence very lightly and set bond amounts at joke levels..I wish it really were Bloomberg West. We would be in much better shape than what we have which is Rahm central. He openly attacks our work ethics, and our pension expectation. Bloomberg never did that to the NYPD and if he did it was done privately and not as a part of his campaign. We have a much, much worse scenario than Bloomberg. Tiny Dancer owes us nothing and campaigned, much as Anita Alvarez did, on what he will do to us should he win. We never had it great under Shortshanks, in fact we had it fairly poorly. Under "Tiny" things will probably be worse than better. He will likely continue the City's now accepted habit of not contributing their pension obligations. He will then blame the systems deficiencies on greedy coppers wanting to take "too much" out. The only good thing that can come out of this will be Tiny's replacing JFled.

The good news today was that CPD Lt. John Garrido came in 1st place in the 45th Ward. The machine anointed candidate came in 3rd place. The machine in the 45th Ward is officially dead.
Garrido will need help to overcome the 2nd place finisher John Arena, an ultra liberal, who was endorsed by both Chicago newspapers.
We can all agree that it sucks that Ballaina Boy won but the war is not over yet. There should be no talk of there goes our pensions, are you kidding me?
You have to be willing to fight for what is right not lay down and die. I have visited this blog again and again hearing cops talk a good game then sit back on their asses and do little else. Perhaps more of you are ready now.

Quin asked the federal govt to guarentee state bond funds for pensions. Not only did they refuse, a republican senator is introducing a bill to make it against federal law to bail out the states and cities for pensions. This was in Tuesdays Wall Street Journal. They called Illinois the next fiscal explosion.

less than 20 years and pension will be reduced to about 60 % after 30 years . Police and Firefighters jobs are safe , city workers in the trade unions will soon be privatized . Paramedics could also be privatized , emt and paramedics make alot less than cfd .

All retire at civil service rank rate. If they can't bank the difference in pay when make exempt rank then they should have never been promoted to begin with.

Really? 500,000 voted Rahm averted a runoff by 5% thats about 25,000 votes. If every cop and firefighter voted and got one family member to vote he would not have a lock on the mayors office, not even counting the other city workers. I worked the election in Garfield Ridge. Lowest turnout any one could remember in my precinct. Only two of the CPD and one firefighter showed up to vote. NONE of their family members did.
A lot of noise was made, but no follow up. Rahm and his posse will gut the 23rd and 19th Wards during the remap with the help of Madigan.
Get ready to get Rahmed up the ass!
I don't want to sound way out there but I think this goes back to the Olympics.
I say we cost Daley his Olympic dream. No matter how much you bribe the IO, if the local law enforcement is not on board they won't bite. The IO is responsible for shipping hundred of thousands of tourists to the Olympics. If their safety is in jeopardy, then who's fault is it?
Daley wanted the Village in the ghetto south side, and he wanted to f his malcontent cops over their contract. We fought back with the largest LE protest ever. All this had not gone unnoticed by the IO. The Olympic dream is gone, and so is the millions of insider deals....and gone is the life of Daley's friend, Michael Scott.
Maybe Daley could have bribed the IO more. Maybe he could have given us a fair shake. Maybe we should know our place and stfu. But Daley has not and will not forget. He is no amateur. He won't pull the trigger on us.
That's Rahm's job.
This low turnout probably demonstrates how many people have given up on this cesspool and will soon be voting with their feet. Rahm’s victory speech is really the death rattle of our city.

Like everything else, if you didn't vote, shame on you. If you voted for rahm and you're a city worker don't cry when he takes your money away. Just like govenor quinn, he told us what he was going to do and you voted him in. 2% went and some. We're in trouble, new mayor and new superintendent, look out people.
I blame the Solar Flares for turning people into zombies and making them vote for Rahm. Where are those scientists so we can have a special election.

I live in the 41st and I can't believe we had such a low turn out. I went right after work to my polling place and cast my ballot.
I guess when it comes down to it, most city workers gladly bitch about their situation BUT when given the chance to change it they would rather sit on their asses and do nothing.
Rahm can talk all he wants about taking our pensions away, but unless he gets the cooperation of state government, that's all it is......just talk.
What's the worse he could do right now? Further delay the city's contributions? Hell, ShortShanks had that down to an art form.
The issue is that so many city workers are used to having things handed to them on a silver platter, that they do not have it in them to work for their benefits.
Someone here said that we'd wax nostalgic over the reign of Daley II.

That was probably me and I voted for Chico and convinced family members that were leaning towards R-hamster to vote for Chico. I did what I could, I spoke to everyone I know that I thought would vote to really consider Chico because of the evil nature of the 7 fingered dwarf, so the fucking we get isn't my fault.

What makes this good news? What did Burke ever do for us? Any other cpd politicians? People in the 45th get educated then decide, don't vote for him just because he's allegedly "one of us", make sure he's the right candidate for the job.

Don't be so sure all department members voted for Chico as we were led to believe they would. My very informal and very unscientific survey (asking PO's in person) indicated that a lot of black PO's voted for the Rahmster, mainly because Obama told them to. I talked to a few hispanic guys who said they were voting for DelValle, though most said they'd vote Chico. I have to figure this same dynamic was present throughout the other city departments. It had to be! Simple numerical logic dictates that had the overwhelming majority of city workers, THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS and NEIGHBORS voted as a solid block for Chico, no fuckin way he doesn't earn at least a run off. Rahm got a larger percentage than even the ass-kissing media predicted he would.
This will be entertaining. Because Rahm and Ed Burke don't like each other. Burke doesn't back down to anyone whose name aint Mayor Daley. I smell Council Wars II in the not too distant future.
I watch what they are doing in Wisconsin, and say what you want about the cheeseheads but they are making national headlines and make us look like a bunch of candyasses.
So you think union busting and eliminating collective bargaining is a good thing? Because that's what the Wisconsin Gov is trying to do. I don't give a fuck about Wisconsonites making news! So fucking what! If their Gov gets what he's after, police and all other union workers in that state are royally fucked. They will basically be told to take what's offered them or quit. GREAT POST- The absolute truth about why millioneers run for office is exactly what a previous poster stated- POWER ! you can only get so much power because of your financial position,especially surrounded by people on the same level. Average turnout in the 19th ward was 76%, busy all day. I only saw the totals for wards in Mt Greenwood, but Chico carried them 2 to 1. Don't know about Beverly and Morgan Park.
We'll be wishing for the days of RMD pretty soon.......fight everything this little asshole wants to do that is even remotely negative towards us.
And I was so much looking forward to retirement! Rahm said that everyone must sacrifice, that if elected Mayor he would not take a pension. That's easy to say, when he made over 18 million dollars as a Washington Lobyist in less than 2 years. What about a guy like me, I don't have that kind of money! Do you? All I have or had was my pension that I worked for. This guy will have me sacrificing on welfare! I guess I will have to develope a taste for ALPO.

You may want to try something a little more constructive. Powerball is a losing proposition.
Rahm is staring his shit already. He's saying he won't take a mayoral pension. This is his way of showing the " shared" sacrifice. That's mighty big of him. What he's failing to say is he made $18 million in a year and a half and he doesn't need a pension. None of us are in that financial position so why should we have to "share" the sacrifice?
The people that say that the 19th & 23rd are in trouble once Rahm gets in might be mistaken. Even though Chico carried those 2 wards the Organizatios(Hynes & Lipinski) were behind Rahm all the way. The 19th ward had a party for Rahm at the Beverly woods last week & Lipinski guys were picking people up and taking them to the polling place(the old fashion way). They just couldn't come out and help much because the residents wouldn't go along with them. They also helped Rahm just by not coming out for Chico.

That's just it. It wasn't only supposed to be us, the city workers. It was supposed to include our immediate and extended family members. It was supposed to include our neighbors. What the hell happened. Just think, had Carol not run, her supporters most likely would have voted for Emanuel too. This jag would have gotten over 60% the vote.
IF you're worried about your pension..this is what you do...
Pull out what you have put in...City has to honor a disbursement. Find out first if there is a penalty for early withdrawal...like a 10% tax fee or something.
Put the amount into a 401k or Roth before 90 days lapses and the money becomes taxable.
There was no decent human being in the race. It's Chicago. No decent human being COULD be in the race.
Get ready for Daley without the Alzheimer's.

Is that tax-free money??? if so, I propose that all the loot these politicians get under the guise of "campaign donations" get taxed.. just like Rahmbo wants to tax the working people at their salons, etc. He calls his tax proposals "luxury", I don't see getting my dog a bi-yearly shampoo and cut a "luxury".
May I suggest a 25% tax on all those donations that he just pocketed.

Rahm is not taking a pension, that should tell you which direction he is headed in.
Our legislators pensions need to be reduced and that is probably what will happen.
Problems can be solved if the people with the knowledge are allowed to solve them instead of escaping child sex traffickers and savages.

Garrido is a good person and actually one of the few bosses left on this shitty job that has the PO's backs. I'll work for him any day. He's better for the position than the rest of these thieving career politicians, that's for sure.
