Sunday Open Post

Bulls are done, Blackhawks have been gone, Bears are locked out and the Cubs and Sox suck. And it might rain again. We're actually tempted to watch the Indianapolis 500.

Open post in the meantime.

Auto racing is like golf.

Pretty boring to watch until you've had a chance to get out there and try it, then, watching it takes on a whole new dimension...

Not much on oval tracks, but rally and/or road course driving is one of the coolest things you can do. It tests the body and mind in ways that no other sport does.

Seriously, if you ever get a chance to try it, go do it. Beware, though. You'll get hooked.

Just a comment on the emptying HQ comments. Should most of those jobs be civilian. YES. Could we staff the more sensitive ones with civilians? YES. Could we do it with civilians currently employed by CPD? FUCK NO!!!! The reason CPD has so many administrative spots for sworn at HQ and Homan Square is that the city will not take the time or money to hire QUALIFIED civilians for the CPD (a handful excepted- I've met some capable civilians in R&D and back when we actually had a decent IT apparatus there were some there as well). FBI Analysts? Civilian, CIA? Civilian. Most of the jobs at HQ don't require arrest powers or a gun, but the Department puts sworn in there because we don't have any civilians with a remote sense of how an investigation is run, much less basic analytic skills. Could we hire some young people just getting out of college and train them to do these jobs? YES. But we won't, because that would require effort. Instead we will just continue to put sworn officers in these positions...

Congratulations to Prosser Principal Kenneth Hunter on getting a 4-year extension to be principal at Prosser Career Academy HS.

The guy must be a magician as under his leadership the dropout rate has increased and Prosser has only 33% of their students meet or exceeding state standards. Thank God for their IB program as without those kids, Prosser would be another Kelvyn Park.

Hunter is what's wrong with CPS. He has his minions in control of the LSC, which voted on his contract and okayed his budget (Including another trip to Birmingham, England for him, 2 staff members, and 'hand picked' group of 8 students. Not a bad deal as he and the 2 staff members go with the kids during spring break, get their usual pay, and a free trip to England. But, I wonder if they're reporting the trip as eanred income?? Where's Pam, Dave, Larry, and Chuck on this one?)

My Dad retired from the Detroit Fire Department at age 47. He recently shot a 90 golfing, and he is now 83.

The DFD has such a strong union, and retiree's input, that not only have they not LOST benefits, they've actually increased them.

My Dad tells me that a lot of their dues money goes to supporting politicians that support THEM.

I don't know what our problem is, but maybe the new guy should contact the DFD union to learn something.

Just do your job and let's rally together in productive ways, not ways that are going to make our city's financial state worse than it already is. That's not the answer. You do realize that the state politicians have absolutely nothing to do with retiree health care costs. Those are a result of the Korshak Decision and are between the city and the Pension Board. Somethng else that you may not know, if contributions exceed costs you get a refund. I got a hundred buck back last year. It's not much but if you think you are getting screwed by this, I suggest you talk to some folks that are paying private rates for health insurance. Don't forget to ask about their deductibles while you are at it. You/we are getting a bargain, which admittedly may end in 2013. Remember that once you hit 65 and Medicare kicks in you will be paying a lot less.

Maybe now you understand why so many folds are holleirng about the health care crisis. Somehow too.
I agree that welfare, etc. costs are out of line, I really don't believe that you would want to change places with one of the "leeches."

Hey SCC, is it true that academy personnel has been sent back to District assignments just when the Department decides to do road side enforcement? The same personnel that is trained/certified to do the cameras in cars digital recording of road side stops are now being ordered to forego district duty assignments and do the same assignment they did while assigned to the academy? What genius came up with this farce? Is this what we have to look forward to from Gary "the situation" McCarthy? Let me get this straight, redeploy personnel, send them back to the same duties as before because the administration i.e. "the Situation" did not foresee events that would require certified personel to accomplish tasks that require training? If this is the course of the new administration then we have nothing to fear, Gary"the Situation"McCarthy has insured that it will be the same lame business as usual nonsense. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

More coppers give that stuff away to outsiders then any civilian. Most departments get by with majority civilians just fine.

5/27/2011 04:34:00 PM

--------------

You are obviously a civilian and not sworn. NO police officer has ever given personal information out. However civilians have been arrested for SELLING our data and personal information and coppers HAVE experienced identity theft and financial loss because of civilian selling protected information. Your opinion is not based on fact. You might have a grudge against anyone with an inside spot, I do not. I work in 014 and while I would like to have a desk job I wouldn't bash a cop having one since at least he can be trusted. Look what happened to the 911 system when cops were forced out. Yeah right, you are retired. If you are then you would remember that and the incompetence that followed when cops were replaced with civilians. You're a liar.

5/28/2011 02:44:00 PM

Once again I'll reply to this. Yes an officer has taken personal information used it to his gain and also given out to others. Maybe you were not around in the early 90's in the 007th dist. but I and many other cops were. His name was Aaron Gibson(who was a 007 dist officer) who hit up myself and several officers using information which was and is still left in the open for all to see. He hit me up for over $10,000 in purchases he made after taking out a credit card in my name. Yes he was fired after being caught and had over 30 counts of theft from stealing other cops info. So, again as I posted before do I trust all cops-Hell No!!!! Keep hiring thugs with our wonderful testing process and this will happen.

Let's talk about that one way back stabbing pos Commander KR from TRU. When the unit was disbanded last week, sorry 90 day detail, he came to roll call almost gloating making comments like get some heads or you are getting dumped. Ha ha ha. Not so funny now is it KR. Now that you were overheard refering to the ASO as Jimmy Walker and the Cheif as Buckwheat. Who's lauginh now?
He was called down to HQ and within an hour his one lone admin po was dumped to midnights in 004 and KR hasn't been seen since. Didn't even go in to say a final farewell to the troops who he gave the demoralizing task of dropping off their cars to the districts. They had to send in DTEB admin Lieut to handle that. She was also seen going through everyone desks and spent over an hour scouring KR's office before anyone got there.
Stay tuned and see what JJ and Buckwheat have in store for him. Georgas can't help you on this one KR. He's fighting for his own life.

I have 10 years on. 65,000 contrib'ed to the pension fund, 35,000 in my deferred. That's 100,000 total.

If I take all of that home and roll it over TAX FREE (ya I know hahaha) then add 1,000 a month (don't ask my be where the hell that will come from) for the 15 years at a safe 4% money market account I will accumulate 430,000.

I'll be 50. That 300,000 / the next twenty years I'll get 21,500 a year BEFORE TAXES.....

Are you pissed off yet too?????

Attention all Coppers who have been screwed over by an IAD guy with initials A.W.
He used to work in 024 and is an Agent.(was an agent currently stripped)
Currently there are several guys/gals that have been rsailroaded by this guys investigations. There is an attorney who will be meeting with interested parties.
This guy is now stripped re: residency.
Can you say do as I say not as I do?
He has made comments after interviews that kinda go like: this is my lot in life....(IAD work)
This guy is just plain no good! In a case he sustained and a copper went to the board and won his time and pay back, this guy AW tried to screw the copper out of a coupel of the months of back pay because while he was stripped his DL got suspended for an emission violation. That means AW tracked him even after he got his 30 pending and went off the payroll. What a TOOL!
The copper got his back pay eventually but just shows the type of sub-human this guy AW is!
Get together brothers and sisters and if you have been wronged, this is the time to go full steam ahead and call them on this bullshit.
Lets hope the department does the right thing and really looks into all the cases that he has sustained and has attempted to have a copper fired by sending them to the board.
This is not a rap on all IAD members. Its just time that this comes to an end. Many at IAD have commented on what kind of bozo this AW is. If thats the cases why was he ever allowed to be in a position that has so much impact on the career of officers? Or was this by design and is he one of the go-to guys that is going to investigate to sustain rather than look at the whole picture and fact find with fairness? I havent been jaded so badly to think that such an animal exists.(fingers crossed)

Hey Supt. McCarthy, here is an idea. Bring the St. Jude parade back to Michigan Ave. I am watching the Memorial Day parade and seeing the honor for the soldiers that fight and the commentators talking about how wonderful it is to be right on State st for all to see. Well, the police were shifted to the park, which is a wonderful tribute, but out of sight of downtown...which also means out of mind. Let's see what kind of supt. you are. Put it back for all to see and honor.

5/29/2011 05:07:00 AM

Signed a civilian wannabe law enforcement professional. I'm sure the FBI doesn't have civilians running some of their spots. Get over it. The city should never have started hiring civilians and they wouldn't be so bitter that they don't have the same benefits as cops, as if that's our fault, and they hate law enforcement officers. Good riddance to civilians. You shouldn't work in an organization that you feel contemptuous about.

Certainly there have been some questionable Civilian hires in the Department in the past (the same could be said for some Sworn hires as well). However, most of the "sensitive" Civilian positions filled within the Department receive more than just a cursory background check. They get full investigations with residence visits, interviews and real reference checks. There are varying levels of skills, talents and abilities amongst the Civilians as there are amongst the Sworn. So before you start making more blanket statements, let me speak for many of the current and past Department Civilians when I say take a deep breath, step back from the precipice, and know it gets better. Is that analytical enough for you, Pudwacker?

My Dad tells me that a lot of their dues money goes to supporting politicians that support THEM.

Shitcago, Cook County, Illinois politicians don't give a rats ass about tax payers. The care about the Leeches that vote for them by giving them the freedom to live the lives of alley cats. There's Upper Class, they are rich, Middle Class, they pay most of the taxes & get fucked over the most by City, County, and State Goverment, then there's the "Entitled Ones". the Govt pays them to push out multiple babies with multiple fathers (who take no responsibility), live under Govt supported housing, get fed by the government, and still have the right to break the law with impunity.

None of our elected officials care about public safety employees, they cater to the consumers of 40 ouncers, and the drug sub-culture of the 'deprived neighborhoods.

If you've ever been in line behind a loud & boisterous "entitled one" wearing expensive clothes & paying for several carts of snacks & steak and then pay for it all with a link card, you know what I mean.

I've actually seen a woman start a shit storm because the checkout clerk wouldn't put the liquor on the link card. She Said this bitch is disrespecting me !!!

If you voted for Obama in 2008 because you didn't want to be labeled "Racist", Vote for some one else in 2012 so they can't call you stupid.

"looks like officers with less than 15 years on will receive reduced pension benefits

Years of service isn't going to have anything to do with keeping or losing a percentage of pension benefits. It's simply going be a change from 2.5% per year worked to something like 1.5%. This will be effective from a certain date in the future. So, if you have 15 years on at the time of the effective change from 2.5 to 1.5%, you will get 15 X 2.5% and then from that point on 1.5% for every year worked from there.

I've worked both, and I'll take the 4 and 2 any day. The only reason to endure the 10 hour never ending day is for the days off. And the only reason anyone liked the 10 hour day with the days off is if you're getting a duck after 8 hours. That shit don't play in the district, only in a unit.

You don't know all the shit on this goof and most who work at IAD.

He spent time in the nut house for domestic problems, liked to push around the old lady, and for contemplating suicide.

But the best was the time in 024 when he faked being shot. He got caught in the lie but it was covered up when he got recruited for IAD by Sgt P.C.,a former front office P.O. from 024 who might actually be related to Fat Phil, same last name????? Hubby is a Dic in A/5.

If you truly believe that anybody at IAD is legit then you deserve to get fucked. IAD is loaded with former personnel concerns and nut jobs just like Al W.

Another famous sandbagger is now a Lt. in 001. He sandbagged many an innocent P.O. as an IAD rat and made Sgt went to 018 and sandbagged many there. Then for his reward he was put in charge of sandbagging coppers for the Personnel Concerns program and he put many on the forced medical until they were cleared by the shrink. Now a Lt. in 001.

IAD has never been and will never be legit, some of the worst end up working there so good old Al W. truly fits in there. Wonder if his buddy Sgt.P.C. will get him out of this one?

Maybe someday SCC and the FOP will do an expose on IAD and the personnel who work there. What an eye opener that would be if the truth ever came out.

to 1:12 post: 10 years on and you only got 35k!!

"I'm doing some math here.

Are you pissed off yet too?????"

Issue #1) you will/should be able to roll that over TAX FREE into your own account. The only way you would not be able to is if you not directing it into a "retirement" vehicle like an IRA.

Issue #2) why wouldn't you be able to save MORE THAN 1000 a month to add to that account? I've posted this before, for this scenario to fly the deferred comp and pension contribution laws must be changed. In order to allow individuals to properly insure their own retirement, the law must change to allow for an increase in the maximum allowable deferred comp contribution and allow for the current 9% of pension deferrals to be ADDED to the deferred comp amount. 9% (pension) + 15% (deferred comp) would give you a healthy 24% total monthly deferral. You could easily put in 1500-2000 a month at that rate and more than adequately provide for a nice retirement....IF you have at least 15 years to go. This scenario is NOT a good one if you have less than 10 years as there is not enough time to build up a nest egg.

430k at 4% interest per month would give you income of 1720 minus tax and your principal stays at 430k. Forget about retiring completely at 50. While you may be able to retire from the job, you will still have to work to provide an adequate standard of living to supplement the 1720. I know a lot of retired cops that still work, you will too, as will I.

One thing that I would have to see is that the city offers a "buyout" to entice active members to take the lump sum, rather than take the traditional pension benefit. I've posted before that I'll take half of my expected traditional pension benefit based on retired officers life expectancy. If PO life expectancy in retirement is 10 years, then I want a 5 year up front buyout. That would add about 200k, it gives me time to grow it and saves the city in the long run. Buyouts happen or in the private sector and if the city is serious about wanting to purge future pension rolls, then they have to offer something to make it worthwhile.

We are NOT included in any of the current pension bills mandating increases. I repeat, NOT INCLUDED.

That doesn't mean we can relax, they will seek to have a special bill for us.

Some lawmakers know that any bill that seems to be in conflict with the Illinois Constitution will be subject to years of court challenges.

CPD can expect to see increases in contributions in coming years from 9% presently to at least 12%. We can expect that but we must ensure that the City's portion also goes up.

We must remain vigilant.

An what about all the Lieutenants and Sergeants still hiding out in various units like Human Resources, MLAS, ERPS, ETC. Civilians can do their jobs and they can add to that 1000 officers needed on the streets.

Someone explain to me what exactly is supposed to happen to the TRU and MSF officers after their 90 day detail??????

Well, you will either.....A) Have the detail extended another 90 days or......B) What detail? You submitted a bid to work this district. And as a succesful bidder you now have a home for at least a year.

McCarthy said he doesn't know what happens after 90 days. Lets see they are taking all the equipment and shipping it out, so instead of calling it decentralizing it should of been disbanding.
so after 90 days there has to be a superbid for the affected officers, of course the district choices will only be the busiest ones.
No sweat, we will blend in, there will be some haters on both sides, but as long as they all show up when help is called for things will be all good

-former 253

Whoever you are, GFU!!!!! If you hate the man so much tell im in person. I was at that roll call and the only thing you claimed happened was that he said make arrests be the polcie. None of that other shit happened. If you werent paying attention he gave out his personal cell, not blackberry, and said to call him if needed. Is he going to take care of himself first, wouldn't you?
Its hard to believe the man did so many bad things to you that you would make up such lies and try and ruin the mans career. Your comments werent aimed at getting him dumped, but fired. Obviously you know some higher ups well enough to spew your bullshit, but guess what, your not in a better spot because they know your full of shit.

To all the guys who say just dress at home and cover up: 10, 15 years ago I used to see PO's all over the place on their way to and from work. Grocery store, drug store, Target, etc., with a jersey or flannel shirt over uniform pants. Now it's a rarity. I myself used to dress at home-now I change at work where I'm lucky enough to have a locker. Many of us would rather not draw attention to ourselves off-duty. It's a safety issue and a personal preference. And it's actually kind of insulting that a job considered a "profession" treats us so poorly.A locker for uniform and equipment should be standard for all.

There's a radio at the desk. If instant response is needed, they have the means to provide it. Otherwise, their function is to secure that facility. Period.
