MVB - Most Valuable Blogger
CBS 2 is running a contest for Chicago's Most Valuable Blogger at the moment. Your humble servants here at SCC have been nominated by a few people evidently, and we're competing in a very narrow field of 10 other bloggers.
In true Chicago fashion, you can vote multiple times (once per category per day). There are 6 categories. Second City Cop is in the "Local Affairs" section.
So if you feel like SCC provides a decent service to its readers, stop by this link and toss a vote our way.
Voting runs through 09 September.

McGoof to combine svu, hgs and rbt in all the areas so they can conform to N.Y. standards.
McGoof wanted to put Detectives in Districts but was not aware how few detectives we have.
Shall we rename the Dept NYPD West Chicago Branch
Looks like your up against a bunch of liberal yuppie blogs.
You provide a valuable service to us, but do you really want the publicity and the non police visitors ?
Just delete your browsing history after you vote, refresh the website and bam there you go another vote.
I don't know why you'd even want an award like that--especially considering your thoughts about the media and CBS--but just in case it'll piss 'em off, I'll vote like hell.
Done - although I hate visiting Channel 2 for anything....

They should put them in districts, they are also going to be working more 1st and 3rd watches as a skeleton crew will be on days!
BTW, Daley and Vanecko have a joint blog extolling the virtues of haggis and buggery, sometimes together. Their blog is a must read for thieves that want to revel in debauchery with panache.
Just cast my vote! Thanks for your service.
Bubbles, the supe has renamed the bureau of investigative services to, wait for it, bureau of detectives, ala new york and joysy
What's wrong with combining detective division units , less bosses needed . All detectives will be cross trained to handle any assignment . Only people unhappy about that decision would be a supervisor , not a detective.
Keep the link to this on the top of the page so we go do it each day!!!
I don't agree with many of the commenters or their rhetoric, but I do appreciate teh valuable service adn opinions from those who can help decipher some of the BS. I first cmae here after the Heatwave which closed the beach.
I voted for you SCC even though you didn't post a few of my stupid assinine comments. Good Luck!
yes I do want non-police viewing this blog. They need to know the truth, not what the news media is reporting, which as we know is usually just plain wrong or what city hall wants them to report.

It will be 4 years this November since the last class of detectives have been promoted. I understand the city's budget problems, but I was also promised when I was hired a opportunity for advancement within the department. The only people getting promoted are the clouted gold stars. Nothing for the blue shirts. I would ask that the superintendent takes a look at pax 501 volume 9, 16 Jan 09 and fulfill those promotions that were projected by Weiss and promised to him by the city before any lists get torn down. I know you will make several people happy that saw this pax and have been waiting ever since.
Done :)
Keep up the good work!!
I really don't care about any political affiliation, but I do care about keeping informed, and this blog by far does an awesome job.
Someone needs to tell LT Drew Carey to get a life. You work in 023, take it easy.
Why is it deemed necessary by the media to scrutinize the lives of retired Chicago Police Officers? Tim Novak’s article of August 22nd certainly portrays the retirees in a dishonest light. I suspect that many of these officers work out of necessity while others work to maintain the bonds and friendships engendered by years of “working the beat”. Why is it so important as to deserve such scrutiny? When a news columnist retires from full time work, is he ever critiqued for writing columns on a part time basis to supplement his income? If the columns are syndicated, should he be judged a bigger cheat? Can he write books, collect honorariums and teach journalism without fear of reprisal? Does he collect a Social Security annuity which far exceeds that of a police officer who receives a drastically reduced Social Security check?
Mr. Novak needs to concentrate on issues of more importance than fifty-four officers performing security work at Chicago’s airports. It does no one any good to denigrate the work performed by retired police officers who are using their expertise to keep the city’s airports safe.

Yep. Til he leaves and they change everything back to the way it was before he arrived.
Hate to be stoopid but how do you cast the vote? Didn't see a button to hit to register the vote.
Promise to vote for you every day.

Regarding detectives being happy to be cross-trained to be able to handle any assignment:
I'm afraid that you are mistaken that a detective who has worked through two or three watches handling a homicide would be delighted to come to work and be handed an investigation concerning broken windows, etc.
The reason that detectives handling violent crimes are in those units is because they WANT to be. It is probably the same in the property crimes units, unless some of the dicks there are biding their time to move to violent crimes.
I will tell you what is wrong with combining HGS RBT and SVU. We have dicks that at best are only capable of handling the most simple of cases. We have other dicks that are good with numbers and are financial crimes. We have dicks that like working patterns. We have dicks that are not interested in putting in the time to clear a murder. We have dicks that have been working homicides for years, have honed their skill set for traits they need to be successful and now you are going to send them on a burglary and give the burglary guy the murder. How does that make sense? Right now, most of the people in the detective division are doing what they want to as far as assignments go. Other than creating the appearance of a larger pool of detectives and perhaps reducing the number of supervisors needed I am not sure what this accomplishes.

It's a little weird. First, you click on the second link in scc's post.
Then, you hover your cursor over 'vote', in the righthand column on the Second City Cop line.
Then you click 'vote'.
THEN YOU CLICK IT AGAIN, so it registers a little checkmark next to the 'vote' box.

All it means is everyone in the D will put the same heading at the top of their To-Froms now.
We all know it won't change anything because everyone specializes (and there's nothing wrong with that). We all gravitate toward our own interests and the guy who's a genius with confidential vin's isn't going to be so wonderful with a shaken baby case.
It's an unnecessary change that was implemented so McSmokeandMirrors could rant about how he 'consolidated' three units into one and tell the world he has accomplished SO much in his tenure here.

Probably a reaction to everybody in a/3 going nuclear when they got assigned a couple hundred financial cases when the incompetent coordinator, uh, forgot to assign them before hitting the medical indefinitely. She needs a cr for inattention to duty.
Instead, with this new combo of hgs, svu, etc, she'll become a homicide dick! HAhahahahahaha!
Thanks for posting SCC...after voting for you I found out by accident that a sports blog I write for (ChicagoSports360) is listed in the sports category!
Go Sox!
