The "Other" Trigger Happy Story

We were perusing the shooting stats recently. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 individuals are walking or rolling in wheelchairs or on crutches or slowly decaying underground because they have more holes in them than they started the year with.

One-thousand people wounded or killed in Chicago by gunfire.

And the Slum Times is making hay out of 42 people shot by the police, calling the police "trigger happy."

Maybe we should all wonder why Frank Main and the Slum Times think the police are "trigger happy" and out of control rather than the real story.

the majority of the dead bodies/shooting victims are male blacks, shot by male blacks

Mope-rah, FOIA request all the shooting case reports: black victims, black offenders about 60-70% of the time. Hispanics make up 20-25% of the other shootings

Base on stats, the black community is "Trigger happy." Honorable Mention to the Hispanic community

Pretty obvious that they are unwilling or unable to deal with one simple truth.

Chicago has the strictest gun control laws in the land and they don't do a damn thing to eliminate the gun violence.

I challenge the media to count and publish the number of crimes committed with a registered weapon vs an unregistered one and then an untraceable weapon.

Exactly. How is it that we are the trigger happy ones when you compare shootings by the bad guys to us? Our shootings have to be less than .0001% compared to them.

Thanks for the stats scc...helps keep everything in perspective. Knew the numbers were high...guessing around 2,000 by the end of the year. Stay safe everyone...remember it's more important we go home safe to our families...in the same condition we started the tour in.

Perhaps we're beginning to see the results of the do-more-(and more and more)-with-less-(and less and less) "strategy" that is Daley's Legacy.

CPD is stretched pretty thin; running job-to-job, little or no down time, difficulty in getting time off, etc. may be effecting performance.

You can only run any machine at max conditions for so long until things begin to break down.

In the future you're likely to see more officers in car crashes, getting injured on the job, and an increase in Log Numbers.

The perceived increase in police-involved shootings may also be a side-effect of the pressure. Not that these shootings are the result of errors in judgment; obviously when dealing with an armed offender (or someone you perceive is armed, as in the case of the 13-year-old banger), you may need to do some shooting, but perhaps the constant high-speed pace of the past few years has forced us into this routine.

What is CPD's MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure)?

Completely off topic, sorry.

I rode in my first Ride to Remember yesterday. As I was waiting with some many of my brothers and sisters, I remembered Thor Soderberg, with whom I did some out of state training. I thought about having breakfast with him and my team, and really just getting to know the man. As the ride started and progressed, we went through neighborhoods and boulevards, where I had worked at one time or another. Citizens and people from those rough neighborhoods, waving at us, cheering us on, some even dancing as we went by. It reminded me of the reason we all band together. I felt honored and humbled to be a "sheepdog" for the people of Chicago. As we pulled up to the Memorial, I rode under the immense flag that was waving proudly from the CFD Ladder, another powerful moment.

Thank you to all the outside agencies who attended. Thank you to all of the Recruits at intersections. Thank you to the CPD Sgt who stood and saluted everyone of us as we rode by. Thank you to the Sheriffs Office, the University Police and all outside agencies as well as our own for providing safe passage for the riders, both past and present. It's an honor to be part of this department.

I'm wondering what the revruns alternative strategy would be--let the gangbangers shoot each other along with some collateral damage?

You chase a guy with a gun so he doesn't get the opportunity to use it in the future.

I was so seiously upset when I saw that ASSHAT reverend saying we were scared to do our jobs, I could barely stand it.

Then I thought, 'why let some illiterate, uneducated asshole have that kind of effect on me?' Isn't that what their intention is?
So don't let them win--don't even listen to these asshole race-baiting pieces of shit.

The City Council should really be motivated to do this.

If you Google 'BB guns' you will see the vast array of these weapons that are available for very little money.

July 2010, 42 dead, July 2011, 54 dead.

Or maybe they will attempt to tie in a "more guns on the street due to a recent supreme court decision" angle?

It was the fourth day of searching for 29-year-old Bryan P. Gross, of the Converse County sheriff's office, who went in the river Thursday evening after a teenage girl who appeared to be struggling. The girl survived, but Gross was swept away in the river swollen by heavy snowmelt.

Guess What!

We have over 1,000 shootings so far this year and to put that into some kind of perspective the Illinois Department of Transportation tells us as of Aug. 1, 2011 there were 427 fatal crashes with 471 fatalities this year.

That's crash data is FOR THE ENTIRE STATE not just Chicago.

http://wrc.dot.il.gov/fatalcrash/crashdata.aspx

Now tell me that the politicians priorities are not all screwed up!

The lawmakers are more worried about passing rear-seat seat-belt laws and doing roadside seat-belt checks than they are at fighting crime.

You can't legislate common sense and we are going to go bust or crazy trying.

Look at those numbers and ask yourself how many people are we trying to save here that for whatever reason they refuse to wear a seat-belt?

Then ask if you have 471 fatalities resulting from 427 crashes just how many were back seat passengers without a seat-belt on?

IDOT goes on to report that we know restraints were not used in at least 176 cases. How many were back-seat riders?

So we have over 1,000 shootings in the the city and we're chasing after the average 176 people that are not wearing seat belts.

Where are the priorities?

Yeah, I know, I know...but if it saves just one life...fine.. However let's start at the top and work our way down.

You want to put a dollar figure on it because the city is going broke -- what do you suppose the ER room cost is for 1,000 shooting victims that will be left unpaid not to mention the ER space and hospital rooms that are taken away from someone else with these shootings going down. What do you figure on average $10,000...$20,000 per victim for the ER and hospital stay?

And Quinn act's like his law is a big deal with all the pomp and circumstance b.s. It's just a revenue creating scam to extract money and transfer the wealth out of the pockets of the middle class.

The problem lies with your media affairs officers and the garbage they put out regarding officer involved shootings. Why is every story stating to the public that the officer "warned" the gunman "several" times before shooting him, and only after the offender "pointed" the gun at the officer.
A warning is not required before shooting the piece of shit, and neither is it necessary for the jaggoff to point the gun at us. The police media affairs people should be saying that. Hell, a fucking gun is not even necessary for us to shoot the asshole as long as we perceive our life to be in danger.
The public needs to hear start hearing that press conference.

Off Topic: Doty Watch

the July 22nd 'big meeting' took place at the International House, as was planned. Nothing
really earth-shattering was discussed; Although
Doty did attend, nothing was discussed as to
why our two most senior watch commanders
were terminated 'for budgetary reasons.' As
of yet, no one has been hired for the open exempt
post of Assistant Chief (if we couldn't keep our
two most senior Lts. employed, can the University
of Chicago realistically afford to hire an Assistant
Chief? Do we really need one, considering the fact
that neither Doty nor Chief Lynch seem to be able
to pull their collective heads out of their asses?).
Oh, and the bosses told us that 'you're doing a good
job.' It's hard to tell, with so few patrol cars on the streets surrounding the U of C campus on any given day (many times we have more exempts in our station than we have cars patrolling the streets, no
kidding). We should be in really good shape this winter if another blizzard occurs. The UCPD is purchasing even more Tahoe Squads, all with 4WD.
The only problem is, they're for use only by supervisors. When we first got them (two), only
ONE could be used on patrol per shift. That was
PER DOTY, whose reasoning was that 'you don't want to wear them out.' I guess that makes sense; spend upwards of 40 grand on a SUV squad, keep it in the garage. Doty continues to provide laughs on both watches, when he isn't trying to intimidate the troops.

Here’s another media manipulation story about CBS-

A Chicago television station is being blasted by civil rights leaders and news media professionals for airing edited video of a 4-year-old boy that took his statements out of context, violating the basics of journalism ethics.
The Maynard Institute published a story on July 21 detailing how Chicago CBS station WBBM ran a story about the June 29 shooting of two teenagers in the Park Manor neighborhood.
A freelance photographer interviewed the youngster about whether the shooting frightened him. The station aired the portion of the interview in which the boy responded by saying he was not afraid and wanted his own gun.
However, it failed to air the portion of the child’s quote in which he said he wanted a gun because he planned to be a police officer.

All Special Employment is on the line. If the CTA cutback doesn't cause the Mayor too much trouble the City will scale back or cut ALL Special. No more time and a half and the Mayor gets to claim the savings without admitting to cuts in personnel.

Any reason why the "do nothing" FOP is not organizing a march at the Scum Times?

Duh! Maybe because nobody cares about the "Scum Times". Why do you even read it? Why don't you start a march around your basement apartment? You and your mother.

"Well City Council? You outlawed foie gras, what about these guns that kids carry that put them in harm's way?

"What if some kid points a BB gun at a gangbanger? That banger is going to cap his ass!"

Oh, it's old Race-Bait again, going on like a rabid squirrel.

You get hold of some Adderall or something? Stop it.

The gun banners got us here already.

City Council isn't Mother and (especially)Father.

"Gangbanger?" Huh? F___ing kid standing right there with his people, throwing up VL, and baby mama takes a snapshot.

There he is, popping out school windows and not one single solitary "adult" on the whole block has the brain cells to tell him to stop, take the gun, whack him upside the head, and say "Go in the house."

ot let cpd be the police dept it once was by hiring officers that will make arrests .
hire civilians to issue parking citations for hal the pay , civilians can handle traffic property damage traffic accident
reports , missing persons , found property , criminal damage to property , vehicle theft and burglary reports , this would save cpd budget and reduce number of officers , it would allow civilian part time jobs without pensions at half a sworn officers pay.

cpd should give new detective and sergeant tests , lists are 5 years old now , no more lt test will be selected through meritorious resume
process , captains are gone.

8/01/2011 05:22:00 PM

They've only taken 111 off the sgt's list. That's 111. The last list was up till 362 and the list before that made it past 500, so I don't think it's a problem with a stale list. The problem is the city has no money to hire new police, which means no/little promotions. What would having a new test do if they don't even promote off the current one?

GFY new boots! They have not promoted a class of detectives in 4 years. I scored under 300 and I studied my butt off and I am still waiting to be promoted. The detective test is about 7 yrs old. Why should I and others be penalized because of the city budget shortfall. Either get some time on the job and wait your turn or study harder next time. Sorry but I and others put in our time. Without meritorious I would've been promoted already!

My cousin's boyfriend works for a testing firm. They were contacted about giving tests by the city but did not get the contract. I guess one of the biggest things the mayor is trying to change is the belief that tests are fixed. He wants to start fresh. He does not care how much it costs because be feels the benefits outweigh the cost. All lists will be torn down by October.

I have been saying this all along, the city hasnt been hiring P.O.'s in order to pay for revenue generating departments. Lets see I came on in 1992 and the police did EVERYTHING back then. Worked all summer events,Cubs games, Bulls, White Soxs, directed loop traffic,etc... Came 2000 and OEMC monster was born, the civilian revenue generating machine. You just dont start a mnew departing without finding money to fund it. Thus the hiring freeze(slow down, wink wink)of the police. Where do you think the city got the money to hire all those civilians, buy radios, and vehicles? With money that is meant to hire police. Then they expanded the TMA's where they work all the chicago events now. Shit back in the 90's you never saw a civilian near parades, P.R. fest, sporting venues,etc... Now they are every where. So now the city realizes that they are playing with fire and need to hire more police but robbed peter to pay paul. So what do they announce? Laying off TMA's. The city needs to pull the plug on OEMC all together and return that money to hire police. While this department generated revenue for the city and allowed to police officer's to remain handling radio calls, it depeleted the police ranks.

They get federal money to run a lot of these safety checks and it shows that we "need" more federal money. That's why they do them.

Tests are stale? Fuck you! Unused does not mean stale. The tests are "low mileage". What content of the new test would be radically different? This isn't computer technology or the medical field that you have to keep up up to date on. Just over 100 sgts made and just over 200 detectives, none since 11/07. I know you young guys are frustrated with no being able to have taken a test but you don't get to leapfrog over the rest of us who have been frustrated too.

I'll say it again GFY! That's the problem with you new cops! You think because you had to have 60 credit hours of college to take our test, you think you are better than all of those who came before you. Well I have news for you FNG, a lot of us had our degrees prior to coming on this job and prior to the college requirement. Those who didn't served or country proudly and some did both. So get off your high horse and put in the time, for Christ sakes you still smell like kales! Signed,GINS956A
