Speed Camera Noise

Does this script sound familiar?
  • Jack up City Sticker fees on a completely arbitrary baseline of vehicle weight, suddenly making thousands of families minivans on the hook for a sizable increase, based on shoddy or imagined reporting that vehicles over that certain tonnage do more damage to city streets.

That's pretty much what happened late last year. The solution?

  • OK, we'll just raise everyone's City Sticker fee.

Everyone says, "Golly, Rahm sure is wise. He spread the cost increase over the entire city." In reality, we're pretty sure that's what he wanted. Tax increase = more money for pet projects. Rahm didn't let a crisis go to waste.

Anyone see this happening again?

  • An influential alderman wants to put the brakes — sort of — on Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s plan to use red-light cameras and cameras concealed in vans to catch motorists who speed near schools and parks.

Ald. Anthony Beale (9th), chairman of the City Council’s Transportation Committee, said there’s no reason to keep the cameras rolling around schools until 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 p.m. on Friday when most of the kids are gone by late afternoon.

“Schools are out at 3 p.m., so it shouldn’t run past 4 p.m. — even if there’s an after-school program. There’s no reason for people to be ticketed after 4 p.m. around schools,” said Beale, whose committee must approve legislation implementing the crackdown.

“Parks are a different story because they do stay open a little longer. And parks are heavily used by the kids in the evenings.”

Beale also wants to lower the fines and phase them in even more than state lawmakers did to ease the blow on motorists.

Anyone want to bet that Rahm doesn't "compromise" on this, too?

  • He still gets his speed cameras;
  • he still gets to claim it's "for the children," even in the face of studies showing the claim that Chicago has an outrageous pedestrian accident rate is pretty much BS;
  • he appears "reasonable" by having Beale phase in the fines and shortening the previously proposed hours of operation.
Voilà! Another crisis not going to waste. And the sheep get trimmed once again thinking Rahm is spreading the pain around.

Even with a fully staffed Cpd traffic enforcement particularly speeding was minimal at best. Yeah the cameras are money makers but so what. People drive like idiots if these make them slow down or not fly through lights what's the beef?

I have a better idea!

Traffic fines should be based upon income. Like say one-tenth percent of your take home pay.

A person making $50k/yr it's a $50 dollar fine. For an alderman making $150/yr it's a $150 fine for the same offense and for a million dollar mayor or his banker and CEO friends the same one-tenth percent makes it $1,000 fine... or more depending on how many millions they're making.

That's how you share the pain...because you know we are all in this together and everything.

Heh.. one red light camera fine and you're gonna wipe out about a weeks pay for these shovel-ready Wal-Mart-like welding job workers that the political apparatus are boasting about.

Oh yeah and the new city ordinance that Burke is proposing wants the public to just sit down and shut up at city council meetings.

This is what we compensate 50 Chicago alderman with six-figure incomes or more to do. Write these non-sense ordinances wasting time and our money.

Seriously, with all the current problems that the city has this is what there priorities are. To make sure the public doesn't yell in approval or disapproval while they are having a meeting...OH YEAH..and the mayor has to approve any signs or banners..etc..

The people will be in the streets come spring time. Mark my words.

The only way to stop this little rat bastard is for OUR Aldermen to stand up and say FUCK NO! We only need 26 of these assholes to do their job and begin representing US...the people who voted them into office. Make the calls to your ward office. Write letters to these arrogant fucks and let them know how you feel. Better yet make a visit and let these pricks know that you are very unhappy about getting fucked out of your hard earned money every time you turn around. The Racoon can be knocked out if WE all go after him. Getting a $50 or $100 ticket is no easy matter today. Most of us are counting our pennies trying to get through this economic downturn. I can't believe how our Democrat leaders are raping us in these hard and trying times. But maybe I can.

I avoid Chicago if at all possible these days. After this goes into effect, I'll never come across the border. Nothing's worth getting bushwhacked by Halfinger.
I understand nearly half the city is going to be included in this. What will messengers, delivery vans, cabs, anybody who has to push it a little to make it, do?
Total disaster for the city's businesses and the Dems. The Dems deserve it. Too bad for everyone else.

======================

Hahaha...these jags are so out of touch with the middle class and their own rules they pass it's pathetic.

Hey..what happened to the extended school day for the children -- did we repeal that proposal? Last time I checked the extended school day is pushing school closings to 3:30PM at the earliest.

Oh and they never-ever hold any after school activities that will last more then 30 minutes right? You never have kids shooting hoops or in the school playground after school hours...Idiots!

Parks close at 11pm and that's "slightly later"?

Let me guess. The alderman gets off at 4 pm and there's a school that is going to mess up his drive time home if these hours are not changed right?

Hey follow the charter schools. The kids get out at 3:30 and anyone that is caught loitering near school grounds by 3:35 should get a $10 fine..that's all ..it's for their safety. Fine 'em, the parents have money and are easy targets.

Yeah..I know, I know, the aldermen says sit down and shut up.

On Chicago Tonight, alderman Pat Dowell stated Emanuel's office provided the aldermen with 'facts' stating over NINE HUNDRED CRASHES involving children had occurred over the past five years, in the vicinity of schools and parks.

Okay, so that's roughly 180, or so, a year.

And, there's no further info. Are these accidents
1) children actually being physically struck by cars?
2) 'children', age 16 or 17, actually driving cars and being in accidents?
3) children in autos, driven by adults, who happen to be passengers in cars involved in crashes?
4) children on bicycles, which are cited as the 'cause' of vehicular accidents, even though they are no part of the actual accident at all?
5) children who are passengers on buses, be they school buses or CTA buses, which are involved in vehicle crashes?

As a p.o. and a sergeant, for thirty years, I don't think I've encountered more than five situations where kids were actually struck by cars.

Could we have a little of that famous Rahm Emanuel TRANSPARENCY on these supposed figures, please?

And, what are the criteria they used to define the area 'near' a school or park? Did Emanuel's office define that when tossing out these so-called crash statistics to the aldermen?

Sorry, Rahm, but five kids who are in a van when the adult driver dings a parked car, DO NOT count as five kids who could be helped by a speeding camera. Stop lying to justify your money-grab.

2/16/2012 12:28:00 AM

This is not about speed bumps. Most schools on residential streets already HAVE speed bumps.

This is about speeding cameras, placed on Diversey, on Ashland, on 95th, on Harlem, etc., even though the school or park nearby is actually two blocks in, on a side street.

You won't see speeding cameras on Sawyer, but you'll see them one block east, on Kedzie. You won't see speeding cameras on 58th, but you'll see them on 59th, a block or two from the park that they're using as the excuse for cameras 'nearby'. Don't kid yourself about the INTENT of this law.

How about hiring Police Officers and treating them with some respect? Then have them write tickets. You have the added benefit of, you know, more POLICE OFFICERS!

Speed bumps wreck car in the winter w/ snow covering them. They are an idiotic solution and cost us money.

Speed cameras don't protect children, and Rham knows it. It's a money grab.

Distracted and just plane bad drivers are the culprits here. The only thing catching them, the only thing protecting children is a copper in a car writing them a ticket. Anything else is another tax.

Six miles over the limit? Watch your speedometer for a few days. We all do it, all the time. Is it unsafe at 6 miles over the limit? Not if you are driving your car and not on a cell phone, or yelling at your kids or eating or texting. Just a money grab Mr. Mayor. Don't lie to us.

Here's anovel approach to traffic enforcement. Beef up the number of judges in traffic court. Assign competent judges and not just those that are low on seniority or under investigation. Stop the wholesale dismissal of violations, hundreds at a time, thereby depriving the city of revenue. Stop making the Officer who enforces the law feel like the offender. In short, make Cook County justice somewhat legit. The crap in the courthouse has been going on for the 30 plus years I've been on CPD.

I made the kid unit one, took full written statements from 3 witnesses, and didn't issue a ticket to the driver.

Mama and Grandmama pitched a fit at the hospital over this set of events, thry called for a Sgt who backed me 100%, they went to the station and demanded to see the WC-they got the DC who just happened to be at the desk, I got backed again 100%.

Rahm's like a mad man out of control!

Now it's more fines and taxes for the high rises and the strip clubs.

All these fines and fees are necessary to pay for the tax breaks given to Motorola, The CME Group, Sears, Ford, Chrysler, etc..

He's transferring the wealth to his corporate friends.

Hizzhonor is also most likely getting a sneak peak at the projected city revenue from all those shovel-ready Wal-Mart-like jobs he and quinn boast about -- the min-wage welding payroll tax shortfalls are freaking him out. haha..

Hey. What do you expect when you help your buddies bust the unions out. When those UAW jobs went from $35/hr down to $13/hr it took a lot of tax revenue with it. Oh but don't look at that. No, look we're creating new jobs..hahaha.

You have to create about three of these (new jobs) suckers to replace the tax revenue that the city was getting from one "Old Jobs".

Twenty to thirty percent wage cuts for ALL city employees is on the horizon should we make it through the Apocalypse.

I'd like to comment on the rumors of 12 hour days and sick days.

These are attacks on our contract. There is nothing more important to your quality of life than the contract. The 12 hours days are a by-product of not hiring. Like it or not, one way or another, we will have more work schedule compression. We will be working longer hours and more days. You will have less time for leisure and family. For the same pay. Forget a raise.

I predict this contract up in June will the quickest contract resolved in recent history. Rahm will strip our uniform and duty checks, and our medical. Zero raise. Zero retro. The FOP will cry foul, and march. Rahm will have Arbitrator Benn tell us how bad the economy is and that the City has no choice. The City Council will approve it over our objections. I say it will only take a month.

Statist thugs like Rahm finds it INCONCEIVABLE that we have a contract. People like him think that orders from supervisiors should trump contracts, laws and precedents.

In my humble opinion, as long as we have a contract, The City will not hire the the necessary manpower. People like Rahm will keep chipping away at the contract, untill the majority of us just quit. Then they can disolve the contract all together. The they will hire half-witted goons for $20,000 with no benefits.

This job will just be another transitory job someone does for 5 years than quits.

Democrats are great at setting up straw-men and knocking them down.

I don't see any kids getting hit by cars. How can they? Around most of these schools, traffic is in gridlock because parents double and triple park so they can pick up their kids. Don't kids walk to school anymore?

Some schools even set up horses blocking all vehicular traffic. Some schools have bust-outs standing around directing traffic and looking menacing.

Remember 9.5's, and the democratic motto, "never let a crises go to waste."

Stop bitchin on a blog and get out and do something. Look on the news, Europeans riot for less than this. Call your fuckin alderman and bitch. Call the mayors office. Reasons for revolt:
1. Higher water bill
2. Higher city sticker
3. Speed cameras
4. Cutting CPD, CFD, Libraries, Streets/San. Meanwhile we still have the same number of alderfucks we've had since the 1950's (even with a million less citizens).
5. Dog licenses and fines for failure to license.
6. Rahm wants a $65 handgun registration fee.
7. Wasting taxpayers money to fight the second amendment to the US Constitution.
8. Rahm's failure to deliver on transparency in city government.
9. Alderwhores get a six figure salary for a part time job, a slush fund and serve what? Eight years? To get a pension (with automatic raises every year).
Meanwhile, we, the little guys, get blamed for destroying the budget with our pensions.
I could rant on about the county and the state, but let's stop with the city for now. Wake up! Give your friends and neighbors the REAL phone number to Rahm's office. Remind these dicks that we voted them in, we can vote them out.

I have been in many riots Mr McCarthy and let me tell you something..as a gas operator it works wonders and you dont have a political correct clue as to what the hell your talking about when it comes to handling a riot... Leave that to the professionals...you are sending officers in on what you call "extraction teams" to get attacked?? Are you out of your fucking mind?? You go first and we will watch how that works without pepper... You expect us to club these people and end up on the 10 o clock news because you dont want to use pepper?? Fuck that.. You come in and do the job pal.. What a goof.. Watch some video of past G8 s and every one uses some type of gas and it DOES work.. But God forbid we cause a political uprising... You want another 1968?? Go away. I hate to say this... Despite Jody's bad choice with Cozzi.. HE was better than you Mr McCarthy... God I cant believe I am saying that.. Sad day for CPD.

In the mayors defense, people should not be speeding in the first place. If you drive like a responsible citizen then you have nothing to worry about. I was detailed to dismissels at the schools and there were several cars that would speed past the schools playing loud rap music with loud bass. This morons need a ticket. I'm sure everyone wouldn't not want them around while their children were crossing the streets.

Instead of these silly speed cameras around the schools "for the children" why not put speed bumps, that'll solve the "speeding" problem
2/16/2012 12:28:00 AM

Speed bumps are fine....As long as you do not damage my car when I go over them at the legal speed limit. If I remember right, the legal speed limit is 30mph on city streets. If I have to slow down to under 15 to not do any damage to my car, there is something wrong with the speed bumps, but I'm sure Rahmmie will pay my repair bill. On the other side of the coin, SUV's can go over them at 30+mph without hardly feeling them. Recently had to have a squad towed due to undercarriage damage in our district. I'll bet it was due to a speed bump.

These stupid things are impossible to see, especially in salt covered streets, since you can't see the little white V's they put on them, and furthermore, the sign says "Speed BUMP ahead". How many times is there only ONE speed bump after you pass the sign?? NEVER, there is always at least two. Now, why doesn't the sign say, "2 speed bumps ahead", or "Speed BUMPS ahead" And how about an 'Arrow' sign at it's exact position?

Speed bumps are not the answer, I can't stand them.

Watch the tricks the city will pull at these locations. Speeds that were 30 will drop to 25 and the new signs will be smaller. This will result in huge revenue since the violation will be 6 miles over the limit. Pay attention to the posted signs and take side streets as much as possible until they put up STOP SIGN CAMERAS for the safety of squirrels, rabbits and crawling insects!!!

Expect more of the same in terms of poorly disguised revenue-making machines the longer we, as a whole, continue to check-up on writing parkers, ANOVs, et al.

Also expect our digitally-challenged mayor to exploit these financial statistics come contract negotiation time. • How many get out and run thru the streets chasing each other with box cutters and 2x4's? Thousands.

How about adding another 2 solid $'s for an after school jaywalking fee to the Flamin' Hot tax.

Why is it the taxpayer has to come up with the cash and not the freeloader. Put a stop payment on that government check for city indebtedness.

2/16/2012 12:14:00 AM

What's the beef?

So you're drinking the Koolaid?

This has NOTHING to do with making them "slow down or not fly through lights", and EVERYTHING to do with funding government corruption, patronage, nepotism and the ILLEGAL sanctuary city.

We've ALREADY seen it. As soon as the public gets used to the cameras at an intersection, they avoid the intersection or, fearing a ticket, stop short quickly and cause a rear end collision. Either way, when the cash flow slows to a trickle, they simply add more cameras to their arsenal at another location.

Then there is the next phase. The connected camera companies, clearly planning for BIG corporate profits for their share holders, find more ways to entice governments to buy their cameras by touting the "next big thing" in municipal revenue generating cameras. Maybe they start to use these cameras to try and fine people who aren't wearing seat belts? Or maybe we can fine people who are speeding? Can we squeeze cash from the people who have a tail light out? And, hey, maybe if we adjust the camera angle and focus, we can catch the cars in the opposite lanes who have cracked windshields or the people who are talking on cell phones? Or is it possible to watch the sidewalk down the block from the intersection and catch people walking their dogs who aren't picking up their dog poop? Why don't we aim the cameras into restaurants or bars and fine the businesses who aren't obeying the NO SMOKING rules?

And it flies in the face of Rahm's claim of more "transparency" in government. Show me in his budget where it is documented exactly how much is collected from these cameras and exactly where that money goes. If the public knew the answers to these questions, they'd be marching on City Hall with torches and pitchforks!

All for show. I'm already budgeting for several tickets I see in my future. How are they going to handle squad car tickets? What if you see something suspicious down the block, and you run the light or go over the speed limit? Will you have to document every light you go through and why? Every time you speed and why?

Citizens get mad when they see us going through lights or parking illegally. As a det., I'm always on the run to squeeze in interviews. If I run an occasional 'late' light, what is the big deal? The more ground I can cover in a day, the more I can get done. Those things add up. If I drive 25 everywhere, I guarantee you it will be a waste of my time.

And for those of you who will say I will have to give up my 3 hour lunches, I've been out to lunch twice in the last 2 years, and that included doing work doing lunch. I've never had a 3 hour lunch, ever, in over 10 years as a det.

2/16/2012 12:31:00 AM

Another CPS by-product showing his math skills. One tenth of $50,000 is $5,000. I'm sure Rahm would love that amount but it seems a little excessive to me.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Why spend the money on cameras if they won't work all the time!"

Because you cannot justify school speed limits when school is not in session.

Nor can you justify slower limits around parks when they're closed.

The only way to sell this was for Rahm to make an argument for the safety of "the children". If the children aren't there, the argument goes out the window.

We here at the UCPD are truly singing "happy days
are here again!" Doty is GONE, and life couldn't
be better. It's actually pleasurable to come to
work on the day shift. No one has to avoid going
upstairs now, having to deal with a man who was
clearly bipolar and in need of some serious meds.
Our numbers have dwindled to the point where
we are no longer the largest campus police force
in the state of Illinois. Our new hires all bolt
from the UCPD well under a year of service,
due directly to the hostile work environment
created here by chief Lynch and our illustrious
bipolar (now former) 2nd in command. Our
newly hired Assistant Chief has come to each
of our roll calls, and she's addressed the poor
morale (indirectly), stating her desire to 'turn
negatives into positives.' Just by her being
here and by doing so forcing Doty to resign,
she has already begun the process of creating
a positive work environment. We can only
hope that now that she's firmly in place, Lynch
will move his office to the Administration
bldg. Rumor is that Doty's miniature protege
(Merit Milt as he's been referred to on the blog)
may replace Doty as the new Asst. Chief's 2nd.
That would be a horrible choice, and word has
been sent to the Asst. Chief that this would
be a disastrous decision, one we hope she will
avoid. We don't expect Owens to last much
longer here with his mentor in the wind.

Maybe we're looking at this all wrong.

Maybe we SHOULD slow down. A LOT.

Go so slow near parks and in school zones that we create complete and total gridlock.

Stop in the middle of the street for no reason, except the safety of "the children".

Screw up traffic even worse than it already is.

This will have two effects:

1) No revenue for Rahm

2) It will shut down all the speed bump proponents and the "Don't speed if you don't want a ticket" crowd.

For the record , I received a red light ticket on a left hand turn at Harlem/Higgins. I honestly never thought anything of it at the time as I was aware of the camera, and confident I had not blown the red. Two weeks later I received a ticket in the mail, and a link to a video from which you could barely even determine at what point the light changed. Be careful out there boys and girls because the city is looking to remove you from your hard earned cash.

2/16/2012 10:57:00 AM

You know, you're right. In fact, since you have nothing to fear if you're doing the right thing, let me take a look at your personal computer and keep your windows open so we can look into your house to make sure you don't do anything we can fine you for. If you're not doing anything wrong, why worry?

You are not an American. You don't believe in freedom but, rather, in being a slave to tyrants. Idiot.

Just look at the Stollway. They almost DOUBLED the rate overnight with nary a peep. Forget that the tolls were supposed to go away in the 70's, because once they have the means to collect it in place (I-Pass)it will never ever go away. And you feel good about it because it costs twice that to pay in cash.

Oh yeah, it's all for the children alright.

This is good

More than likely, it’s a ‘no’ on the tear gas, said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, despite the likelihood of some protesters coming to town to cause trouble.

“I’m trying to figure out how tear gas helps you control a crowd,” McCarthy said with a hint of incredulity. “It’s never really become clear to me.”

Unbelievable. There goes the money from the speed cameras!!!!! And I would suspect punitive damages. Is it worth it? Fuck no. We should be acting with the thought in mind that all of our actions and words might some day be shown to a jury.

Careers down the drain. Savings down the drain. Retirement down the drain.

I can't believe it. Of course they don't show what was said before the sgt. said "Take a hike." The first guy walked away immediately. This guy didn't. But charges dismissed? Not good.

Sad. One black eye after another. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Then, every Chicago citizen "got skin in the game".

Freeloader=gets shit for free.

2 or three meals at school.
and school is free
Link
heath care
section 8 or public housing
free cell phones
wic
bags of food at churches and food banks, because the link money went for liquor, smokes, and other shit that the store owners sell in direct violation of the rules.

so why should a freeloader even consider putting some skin in the game? Everyfuckingthing is FREE!!!! And you and me Mr Taxpayer, get to foot the bill!

"Cmon....people Speed in this city because there is Shit for Enforcement..."

People speed in this city because the traffic sucks.

A few months ago Chicago was rated among the worst for traffic.

There are too many stop signs and red lights. Many were installed simply to appease neighborhood whiners and businesses. The city will "split" the cost of a traffic light. If the biz puts up $50,000, the city will put up the "other $50k". (Side note: Do you really believe it costs $50,000 to install a traffic light?).

I live 18 miles from work. It takes me an hour, using city streets to get there. That means I'm averaging nine miles/hour.

Speeding? Really?

What I am most amazed at regarding the spped camera's is that none of the insurance companies said anything negative about the cameras.

This essentially removes speed camera tickets as a moving violation.

Hence the insurance companies cannot hold that against someone to raise their rates.
