Dumb Law to be Fixed

  • In the wake of the NATO summit, the Illinois House approved legislation Tuesday that would allow citizens to record a police officer who is on duty and in a public place.

The vote represented a key moment for a bill aimed at fixing a state law deemed so unfair that Chicago announced it would not be enforced during the summit, a move made as the city ramped up for NATO and for the protesters who would hit the streets.

Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy previously has said he supports letting people record the police and vice versa. Pressure for change also comes from multiple court rulings that the eavesdropping law violates the First Amendment...

This is what happens when you keep electing morons to the legislative branches of government - bad law and backtracking, not to mention the cost of defending, and then losing, numerous lawsuits.

You know....like the beating Chicago has, is and will be taking fighting Second Amendment lawsuits.

We should also be allowed to video tape, with audio, the citizens on the public way as we deal with them. Might be an eye opening experience for the liberals who have never seen the animal in its natural habitat, ie the west side and englewood.

BUT, here's the problem... ...IF the changes have remained the same since the last time I read the amendments, THESE POLITICIANS are ONLY CHANGING the law to allow for citizens to record the police, WHILE KEEPING IT ILLEGAL TO RECORD POLITICIANS, say from accepting "donations," or talking about who gets appointed to what after "campaign contributions" clear the deposits

Am I wrong?

If the door swung both ways,
if there were proper charges for offenders that do thing to police officers,
if the felony 'battery to a police officer' were ever enforced in Cook county'
....police officers would surely be behind this....
but we won't hold our breath.

speaking solely for myself as a law abiding citizen, I think it is quite reasonable that everyone in a public place is subject to being recorded.

If you do not want to be recorded, go someplace where it is private. JMNSHO.

I also think that one should be allowed to record one's own conversations, regardless of whether everyone else party to the conversation agrees.

When I was still on the street, I got the names of those recording, telling them that they might be required to turn over a copy and appear in court.
Turned out good in the 1 lawsuit I had

The rainbow coalition would fight tooth and nail to allow police officers to record interactions with the community because it would reduce the volume of complaints and demonstrate to the public the Maury type behavior that police have to confront on the west and south sides. Jesse and his litigious thugs would be prevented from publicizing the real behavior demonstrated by the community in lawsuits thus diminishing the possible payouts of the "west-south side lottery".

OT - My tax return was returned: I got my Tax Return "Returned"! I was trying to get a jump on doing my taxes this year, but the IRS sent my Tax Return back!!?? I guess it was because of my response to the line, which said: "List All Dependents"...I replied, 12 million illegal immigrants, 3 million crack heads, 42 million unemployable people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons, and 535 fools in the U.S. House and Senate. Apparently, this was NOT acceptable. So I sent it back with a question "Did I forget someone?"

the city works like this, introduce a unfair law. Pass it and use it until the supreme court rescinds it in 10-15 years and then do it all over again for something else.

As a FLEO (ret), I don’t want to sound paranoid but most of my work was recorded every day. I believe anyone could already “see and trace” your every move on public and private security/surveillance cameras already in place. I have seen many departments issue “body worn camcorders’. They are small, look and feel like a pager/cell/ or mike, the newer ones are even smaller. It may catch a mistake that could bring a day or two without pay, but it can also make your case. It is a great tool to reference when writing those reports. If every LEO started their shift knowing (or remembering) that they would be recorded (by others unseen) I bet there would be very little changes in their SOP. Hell, buy and wear your own buttonhole camera, never know when your video may need to prove someone else’s video was “edited”! I would count body worn cameras on LEO’s as Personal Protection!
