Lowest of the Low

  • Police today offered a $3,000 reward for information leading to conviction of the person responsible for vandalizing the Chicago Police Memorial in the city’s South Loop neighborhood.

Graffiti was discovered about 6 p.m. Thursday on the memorial located near the intersection of 18th Street and McFetridge Drive, police said.

The memorial honors officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Someone somewhere saw something, and $3,000 might open a few mouths. Didn't they have cameras there at one point?

Friends of the NATO 3 no doubt.

It's ok. They can deface the monument, but they can never, ever, diminish our commitment to our comrades to never, ever, forget.

May God Bless us all, and provide special care to the Gold Star Families.

There is a camera there, right underneath where the memorial was tagged as a matter of fact. But they didn't think it through and didn't realize that it is surrounded by the leaves on the trees . That camera is so high it will only see west onto Mcfetridge by the Field Museum and Soldier Field. It gets nothing but leaves if it pans to the memorial side. Solidarity drive is a freaking joke too. Vehicles get broken into nearly on a daily basis and the cameras only see the damned Lake on the shedd side. Absolute joke. They recently dumped tons of money into chopping down the trees and re-sodding all of solidarity all the way up to the planetarium. They spent 0 on upgrading or putting in a better camera system. - someone in the know

Just goes to show cameras do not prevent crime, cameras do not catch criminals, and unless you have a clear close up identifing the offender(s) you wont get a conviction, even if you do get someone. If a live police officers was there, their mere precence would deter the crime and criminal. Look at the CTA incident. If you know someone on these photos please call police. The CTA is asking a group in a society that believes in a dont tell, dont snitch way of life. Cameras are a good tool, but like any tool if you dont have the manpower and knowledge to use the tools, these tools are useless.

The a**holes that did this should be made to scrub every brick clean and then for the next year, they should be made to clean and maintain the grounds and memorial every weekend for what they did. If they did this in Afghanistan, they would chop a hand off! Sorry to say that this doesn't surprise me- how would anyone know what happened when the memorial was set up somewhere Christ lost his shoes. That memorial should have been erected in the middle of downtown, millennium park, daley plaza etc., somewhere EVERYONE can see it- not just off the shore of lake michigan where bikers and runners who are so engrossed in exercise listening to their iPods don't even notice it. You never see anyone vandalize the "bean" or the "picasso" or any other hideous eyesores the city proudly displays downtown because there's police and people always around- they leave the memorial unattended because they don't care. The memorial is a metaphor for the city's attitude toward us- something they should acknowledge and respect but they don't want to be inconvenienced by it, or reminded of it, and they just want it out of the way for what they regard are more important things. Same is true for the annual police march every May. We used to march down michigan ave - every district. It was great to have a day to acknowledge the officers that sacrificed their lives for this city and those living that continue to do so. They took that away as well- I'm sure the business owners on michigan ave were thrilled that they threw us literally on the lake for our annual march; postponing business for a few hours on one sunday morning was too much to ask. So now ask any officer if they honestly care about protecting these same businesses from the west-side savages; you already know the answer.

Just an hour before 100 Chicago Police officers gathered Saturday to go on patrol overnight for a potentially violent shift across the city, a 16-year-old girl lay in a gangway, three bullets in her chest.

Hey Sup, tell racoon eyes you need to hire about 3,000 more coppers. That is what the problem is.

Here is how you can pay for them. The first thing you can do is to shrink the number of alderman from 50 to 15. Everyone knows that many are not needed. Then tell racoon eyes to get rid of the layers of supervision throughout the city. You don't need the assistant to this and that and deputy chief, deputy director, asst. to the asst. and on and on. Pretty simple? Too simple for them to understand. Maybe when 80 are shot over a weekend and 20 die they might start to listen. It looks like that is where we are heading.

Just a suggestion, why not have this turned into a citywide detail? Just have each district/unit assign one car for a tour and rotate through all the districts and units. Keep rotating through so that every officer/supervisor serves a tour. EVERY district/unit included. Not only would this be a deterent for further vandalism, but all would have a chance to take the time to reflect on the sacrifice that others have paid.

Two years ago working a lakefront concert, the night before retirement, my partner and I spent time watching the memorial. We were afraid of a cdtp that night. All around the Officer's wall, half of the ground lights were out. Had we had tools and bulbs we would have changed them ourselves. We couldn't believe it. Shame on the powers that be that those lights were out. Don't know if it's any better now.

Heard on channel 9 news, "G-mac" got quoted saying IT WAS PROBABLY THE WORK OF A CHILD!!!! Does it get any better than this. Let's take their crayons away and give them a time out in the corner. How bout a time out with the coroner!

There was NEVER any plan to cut the number of aldermen.
Since before the election, I have been posting here, "Pay attention to what Rahm says, not what you THINK or WISH he's saying".
He said he would CONSIDER cutting the number of aldermen. Now, he may have considered it for thirty seconds, or for an hour, but he NEVER, EVER had a plan to actually DO it.
