A PO got hurt two months before his 63rd birthday. At age 63 he was mandatorily retired and ceased to be part of the bargaining unit. His calls to the FOP about his injury were pointless. He thought he would get a year on IOD medical. Wrong. At age 63 he ceased to be employed.
If a retiree has a complaint they are told to call the pension board. The FOP might send a letter in support but there is nothing else that can be done. No article or page in the contract gives retirees contractual rights and there never will be anything in there giving former employees any contractual rights.
So why should a retired PO be able to vote on issues which affect active PO's who are in the bargaining unit? It is a very simple issue.
Some years ago the FOP made proposals to put in the contract language guaranteeing retirees rights. This was a non-starter for the city. They would not even sit down or even consider putting anything about retirees in the contract. And why should they?
Retirees are no longer employees, they do not work for the city any longer. They resign, retire for pension. Their rights etc. are written in the pension code. Not the contract between the city and FOP. Why should retirees therefore vote on issues that affect the working police?
The answer seems obvious, they should not. I know of no other police union that includes retirees in their board of directors with the power to vote on issues affecting working cops. Grievances, lawsuits, contract issues etc. Why should someone whose career is over have that kind of power over working police officers?
Out of the 27 members on the FOP Board of Directors, 9 are retired PO's.
One third.
One third retired PO's with the power to vote on contract issues affecting active working PO's yet they are not part of the bargaining unit.

They are always busy putting together Compshit data. Sgt's are being worked as hard as det's or harder. No, I'm not a sgt. Just reporting what I see where I work. I know for a fact, at least for my sgt., there are no early ducks--in fact, he's there longer than his tour, and no, he's not some idiot who lives for the job.
Det's don't have time to do investigations, and sgt's don't have time to help det's out on investigations. They are stuck with busywork all day long, on both of the shifts I have seen. Don't know about mid's.

FOP should step up and demand it be made known! All of us deserve it! And if you are made by merit, and you're proud of your past record and can defend why you deserve the promotion, why be so scared for people to know?
Believe me, once the sgts. hit the districts, people will know who's who. But it should be public recrod. How can the city enjoy the right to have their 30%, but not be accountable for it?
They should release the reasoning and proof of 'merit' behind every single merit pick--because if merit picks are legit, then the rest of us will know what we need to do to be considered--if the process was legit, that is, which it's not.
Show us their numbers! Show us their incredible arrest history!!!! Show us what makes them worthy of being a merit pick! Show that they weren't made merit because of their name or significant other!!!
That is how the process SHOULD be. It's not going to happen in my lifetime on this job--or even in my entire lifetime!
Watch your fellow officers pass u up and wonder why not me. Well study harder next time.
Make more arrests. Lockup more bad guys. Get numerous honorable mentions and department commendations and watch your fellow officers pass u up. Why not me.Well study harder.
I now have a chest full of awards. I've saved lives, have put people on death row. I've been the real police. Why not me. I will study harder.
Wait, all the white shirts at St. Jude's parade don't have a chest full of awards. Matter of fact most of them don't have any. They must be real smart because they must spend all their time studying. I'm sure glad to have such smart bosses. Guess I better stop locking up bad guys and start studying harder so I too can become a boss.

That is why Steve Robbins has taken on this issue.
Hit has nothing to do with the FOP board. Steve Robbins is trying to take the retiree spot away from the pension board. By taking a retired PO out of the pension board it's easier for the city to push their agenda through. Robbins took the issue on because he was promised a spot in the water department by Rahm if he could get this passed. In the end it's a power play by Rahm to give the city a bigger voice in pension votes.
Retirees on the Board are not on the contract negotiating committee and do not vote on contract issues. The FOP represents retirees on pension matters in Springfield. The word is that Steve ( the rat ) Robbins, wants to run for a seat on the Mtropolitan Water District Board and has been promised support from Rahn in exchange for creating dissension within the FOP. Robbins, the rat, should be expelled from the FOP.
Steve Robbins tks for the long drawn out bullshit answer re retirees rights /pension issues being protected inretirement, why you are so short sighted defies all logic. If retiree pensions don't stand as garanteed by previous FOP contract votes then nothing you vote for in FOP contracts and get even in binding arbitration with the city has a prayer of standing. The longer you are in the union the better you know and understand the history and art of negotiations and remember the fight to get where you are today....so goof first you divide the retirees contracted benefits from the rest of the police contract and then you will learn what happens when you weaken your union numbers, guess I ll have to show up at Sept mtg to help take you off your politically motivated pedestal and show that many of us who went thru hell and high water in the 70s,80s,and 90s still have your non retired backs, why in the world don't you have ours? you are a inept self appointed leader of very few! Retired proud FOP member
Obviously the hack that is poting out cm from ig unit does not know him and does not know his background from when he was in patrol and how hard he studied for this test. Congrats Curt, you earned it.
Why is it that a certain "person" on this list is a sergeant after getting caught shooting his gun off in public at his car windows after locking his keys inside then proceeds to fight with the police who respond on scene..... yet this person has been made a Detective and now a sergeant not counting the units this person has also been on. And people wonder why there is no faith in our Testing and merit system within CPD. Its a joke!!! and this person is a joke....and their clout is a joke for allowing it to happen. Guys have been stripped, fired and have taken more time for absolute b.s. then this guy has.
if you dont want retirees to vote for certain offices, dont take money for dues. who should the retirees go to for help to get a raise for some widows who fall way behind after hubby bites the dust? oh i know screw them. the local has more influence than a small group of retirees. be honest how often do pos attend union meetings? and do you vote on every election? how much money is spent for arbitration for grievances or contracts? so you really dont need retirees dues.

7/28/2012 08:31:00 AM ---
The reason posted about the FOP Board came straight from Steve Robbin's mouth. Rahm already wins every vote he wants to win, like Daley. What's the difference if he wins 5-4 or 8-1? The pension board is already stacked in the city's favor, more stacked doesn't help.
Why is it that a certain "person" on this list is a sergeant after getting caught shooting his gun off in public at his car windows after locking his keys inside then proceeds to fight with the police who respond on scene..... yet this person has been made a Detective and now a sergeant not counting the units this person has also been on. If that Sergeant, Lieutenant Captain or whatever is significnatly older you give that person the respect of using "Sir" or "Ma'am"*. It is the same respect you should give any elder in any profession.
(* "Ma'am" is short for "Madam", which if you use that in some cases could get your face slapped.)

I'm sure people on this blog know who came from a unit and who has whack. If you do, you should post it! One by one, I'm sure we can come up with where the 9 merits came from and who their whack/significant other is!!!! Not that hard to do!
If you know it post it!

Wrong. We had 55 total last July. We still have four days left.

But there are a lot more det's they are responsible for. I don't see my sgt's sitting around shooting the shit, shopping online, or playing video games.
Don't know about mid's.
hey I know a guy that made it meritorious- all on his own- no juice- nothing-just an average cop- see there is still hope for the rest of us

Would have been nice if they'd have continued to let us know who was meritorious off the list, and who nominated them. It sure didn't take long for that to change under this regime.

Keep studying hard and you too will be rewarded.
I thought Robbins was the the guy that sang "El Paso" and "Pink Carnation".

Former pension board rep, ran for trustee with Shields, did not make it.
In other police unions, retired PO's are not able to vote on anything affecting active duty PO's. Why should they? Retired PO's are not part of the bargaining unit here. The pension board represents retirees here, not FOP. A retired PO has no standing with the FOP under the contract.
That is why Steve Robbins has taken on this issue.

I agree with Steve. Hope he runs for FOP President!
One third retired PO's with the power to vote on contract issues affecting active working PO's yet they are not part of the bargaining unit.

Retiree's on the Board can not vote on contractual issues. Robbin's should read the FOP by-laws. Robbins should get his head out of his ass.
whats the beef ??? she was high on the list ... if she was merit you would be bitching ... you get what you study for

No Merit List this Round!!! All By Rank!!
7/27/2012 08:01:00 PM
Yeah...you can try and tell them that, but before you leave the academy in two weeks, everyone will know who the merit hacks were.
And as usual, the rest of us will have to sit back and watch your rise begin just like we did with B.West and M. Pena. Worthless and NOT worthy!
One third retired PO's with the power to vote on contract issues affecting active working PO's yet they are not part of the bargaining unit.
Then why not restrict them to voting on issues related to retirees ONLY? Robbins may be looking to create a spot on the board for himself.
Robbins, the rat, should be expelled from the FOP.
retirees do not vote on the contract. retirees on the board have no say in the contract.
Sgt is usually called sir by a non military person thst doesnt know better
Since when is a sergeant called "sir?"
7/28/2012 04:09:00 AM
Only when voluntarily offered as a sign of respect to one that has proved worthy. And there's not many of them still around.
Guys have been stripped, fired and have taken more time for absolute b.s. then this guy has.
oh, and the day I call him "sir" is the day I shake our Mayors hand and the superintendents hands..............which will be never
if you dont want retirees to vote for certain offices, dont take money for dues. who should the retirees go to for help to get a raise for some widows who fall way behind after hubby bites the dust? oh i know screw them. the local has more influence than a small group of retirees. be honest how often do pos attend union meetings? and do you vote on every election? how much money is spent for arbitration for grievances or contracts? so you really dont need retirees dues.

The reason posted about the FOP Board came straight from Steve Robbin's mouth. Rahm already wins every vote he wants to win, like Daley. What's the difference if he wins 5-4 or 8-1? The pension board is already stacked in the city's favor, more stacked doesn't help.

I second that. I work Area 2 (I hate the term Area south). Sergeants are being asked to do more than ever. I am not a sergeant.
Mohammed Khalil or Khalil Muhammad, there's two? I know one was the real police from the "shit hole days" of public housing, who's the other guy? was there an amended list?

Unless speaking infomally...
OK, laugh, we need it.
