Holiday Party Plans

Truth?  Or Rumor?

Word from HQ is no District holiday parties on Friday or Saturday nights.

We don't know about specifics, but some districts reserve dates at their venues literally a year in advance.  If so, then what?

And what makes Districts so much less special than Units?  Isn't Patrol the backbone?  The "go to" people?  Or is that just more smoke?

No one ever buys thier BS about patrol being the "back bone" we know it's lies because they treat us like we are the arm pit of the Dept.

Hey McJerkyboy, can't you just buy a one way ticket back to the east coast? This isn't New York!

They've denied personal days, prevented officers from attending their children's birthdays, denied slips that were approved where airfare and hotels have been booked,
AND...

...the district wants you to buy a $50-$100 ticket, then BURN A SLIP that they denied all summer???

Don't you remember that bullshit if you want a three day weekend for some thing just burn a day ?

How about that 1/2 hour service fee for every vacation day you earn?

You get 72 hours! IPRA gets 7.2 years?

But my all time favorite, New babes in the wood get a 401K that don't fund our underfunded / BANKRUPT (depending of your arithmetic ) pension or medical for life.
Sorry! I forgot they stole the medical three contract ago? Or was it four?

I am hearing word that the new commander of 019 is pushing for 019's Christmas/Retirement bash be held on a Sunday. So that rumor is making sense. No taking PO's from other district's to fill in because there aren't any to take.

But what the hell, G-Mac says crime is down down down. We must be doing something right. Right? Or maybe he is holding his Crime in Chicago bar chart upside down. Someone better check. Or not. Why screw up his fantastic proclamations with facts.

Who cares?

As is dredged up every year regarding the topic of "Holiday" (more on this later) parties:

* spend a-buck-and-a-half to take the Better Half halfway across town to a dump of a banquent hall to eat shitty food and drink domestic beer and well vodka?

NO THANKS

* burn 8 hours to attend this gala - or to recover the next day -in the event you're not RDO? (betcha the DC doesn't have a problem letting you take THIS night off after denying your other CU requests).

NO THANKS

* cough-up even more dough for a sitter to mind the kiddies?

NO THANKS

* listen to the same goofs tell the same war stories you've heard a dozen times before?

NO THANKS

* have the jagoff, backstabbing supervisor(s) that ignore and/or fuck with you the rest of the year try and make small talk with you? Have a drink with you? Tell your significant other what a "great copper" you are?

NO THANKS

District CHRISTMAS parties USED to be one of the best times I can remember on this job, second only to watch parties. Yes, I said "CHRISTMAS" parties. NOT the fucking politically correct HOLIDAY parties that they're called nowadays.

We were a much tighter group of people back then; going around on a steady watch forged bonds not seen today. The majority got along, and most supervisors were actually BOSSES.

The district actually enjoyed coming out to honor that year's retirees, wish each other well and to share the holiday cheer. It wasn't a stretch to see over half the district's personnel in attendance - no exaggeration.

And Christmas parties weren't attended primarily by the usual groups of "Have-Tos" like it's been since I quit going sometime a few years into my career. "Have-Tos" being the tactical toughguys, neighborhood relations apparitions, Commander's front office dollies and assorted suckasses desperate to stay on management on their respective watch. People came out because they WANTED to come out, not because they HAD to come out.

True or not about HQ putting the kibosh on Friday or Saturday nights, it's just another sad reminder of how far this job and the camaraderie that once accompanied it has sunk.

You're a fucking idiot. Your justification and weak argument for not attending a Christmas party is highly indicative of someone who has consumed way too much Koolaide and applied way too much hairgel.

If you had more than a minute on the job you'd realize the real reasons for not attending functions like this under the current CPD atmosphere. You'd also realize just how important these parties were in keeping the pride and camaraderie alive on this job. Allowing pansies like you on the job has been the death knell of a once great profession. It's probably a good thing you weren't around to expedite the spoilage of the better times.

How right you are when you said "getting on this job doesn't require much smarts". You must have been looking in the mirror when this epiphany occurred.

Now, carry on being a departmental Sheep, afraid to have a beer in your (parents') backyard.

Say what you will but leaving the job is a difficult thing for many. One of those major life milestones, like weddings and funerals. One guy called retirement God's waiting room.

They have cheap booze and rubber chicken outside of CPD retirement parties too. And roast beef and lousy pasta. So what. You don't get too many chances any more to do something as a group/unit/district. Show up for someone else, it isn't a selfish thing. That is the last contact many people will have with the place they spent so many years.

Just go and earn another jewel towards your own crown in heaven, as the nuns used to say. Do something good for someone else.

Denied time at every turn and being run ragged while the only time your family gets to see you is when you're passed out from exhaustion?

We DARE a motherfucker to even make eye contact about tickets to a "holiday party."

Sheeeeit! In some districts there WILL be some bonafide violence in the work-place incidents if the usual suspects start their usual shit with hawking these tickets.
Policemen just aren't in the mood for stupid shit...

Fucking with people who have guns was ALWAYS a losing proposition in our book... ESPECIALLY AROUND HOLIDAYS!

Heh... *C/O Book: "All Department members of Patrolman rank will secure their weapons when inside department facilities until further notice"*

"Holiday Parties" have decayed into a beauty pageant of assholery & fuckery anyway...

*Sour sounding holiday noise-maker... FWEEPLBBBT!*

Buy the whole roll yourself boss!

Oh wait... You're still trying to make the daily nut on your clout lease on that Gold Star and undeserved pension you're gonna be stealing.

Dirty as a dead hoe's panties if she ever wore any...

Oh wait... District Commanders and W/C's (Zzz...*Fart* Huh? Whuzzat? Zzz...) are going to make the Tact Teams, desk dollies and all the front office hidey-hole people pony up and buy the hall out.

We remember one w/c calling cars in off the street to stand before him and justify why they didn't buy a ticket to the Christmas Party...

"So what if you aren't going, you're BUYING a ticket, right?"

"NO!"

The people who said no were wondering if being shadowed by an Inspector had anything to do with it?

Nah... Just another symptom of political rot...

Kinda like some poor soul condemned to walk the earth with a corpse chained to his back until he too drops dead from the stench and pestilence.

Once upon a time, in a Chicago Police District, far far away, there were almost 300 police officers. There was only one timekeeper. And she could add and subtract. An occasional error was made, but that was quickly corrected. Paychecks, overtime checks and time were always prompt. Watches rotated, and in a matter of three periods, you pretty much knew all of the police officers in the district - even tact. In fact, after about 2 full rotations, you might have even learned most of their FIRST names, too. Cars were two-man, and back-up was only seconds away. Many times another car rolled by your job just to make sure you were going to be ok. Open doors in the front usually meant that the back was covered by another beat car, because we were all in it together. Wagons rolled on shoplifter calls, check the well-being, and calls of crazy people. Somehow, the sight of that behemoth vehicle straightened some people out. We consoled the hurt, the grieving, and brought families back together when they lost someone. There was pride, and bonding with your fellow officers. There were times for fun (watch parties) and there were times for hard labor (searching for bad guys). But then, the life was sucked out of the job. The government said that people didn't have to be responsible citizens. They could take their government checks and take their food stamps, and subsidized or free housing and medical, and tell the officer that they were not important. Criminals were not to blame for such behaviors... they don't have to take responsibility for their actions. It was "society" that was to blame for crime and the police were an arm of that society. Somewhere in this story was lost that sometimes the only thing that stands between good people and evil is the police officer. Until such time as people claim their lives against a government that nurtures dependence, we are circling the drain and there won't be a happily ever after....

WELL EFFIN' SAID BROTHER!!!!!!!

take a look around the roll call room. 90% of the gels either werent born yet, were in diapers or were little kids when we came on the job. we didnt get paid to go to court - they cry if when they get tossed on a late car for week. we didnt have guys dropping notes to commanders to snitch on other coppers. we didnt bother the sgt for shit unless it was huge, these kids cant write an arrest report with probable cause in it. we had no vests, wheel guns and a nice hickory stick to take of business - the kids cry to the WC if the tazers are all gone. Your damn right the best times this job has seen are long gone never to return. Affirmative Action and the democrats were the cancers that ate this job up.

It was a damn good time to be a police officer. You're right about people sliding to your jobs to make sure you were all right. And we had to remember where cars were or write it down, no PDT's, you had to know where everyone was by listening to the radio, one radio per car.

If someone yelled into the radio you could usually recognize the voice and people were rolling there right away. I was a few blocks away from a police officer shot call at Chestnut and Hoyne and we were the second car there. People flew to help out their co-workers.

Most people did their share not because of what some supervisor might say but because they had to face their co-workers in roll call the next day and that peer pressure to keep up your end was fierce.

Talk about ball busting, those guys were brutal if they thought you were dogging it.

Only 26 years ago but seems like an eternity.

The Christmas party in every unit is held to honor retirees as a group. You go to show respect for them. Yes, the food is bad and the alcohol is substandard in a lotr of banquet halls, but remember-----one day, it will be your turn. Then, you will find out why retirees need and deserve our respect in this fashion.

You all are forgetting the real reason why they don't want a CHRISTMAS party on a Friday or Saturday night. Random ALCOHOL testing is closed on weekends. No one to 'fuck' if the party is Friday or Saturday.....Think about it....

Morale is so low no one gives a fuck about a Christmas party anymore!

I rather spend my free time with my family watching T.V.

Excellant posting by the wheel gun guys. I am retired and sure glad to be off the job the way it is now.

I ran many a retirement party in the good old days. Now I see there are few if any.

The Job was great back when, today, the poor guys with no time will have heart problems in their 40's with all the shit that hits them everyday at work.

WSIDN! A clink of the rock glass to ya...

You hit that one out of the park!

And may we add that NONE of the collective ire is directed at the retirees... We commend and salute them for their service and sacrifices.

They don't need a boss sponsored "beauty pageant"
to feel appreciated.

Seriously... To a man, that's what these guys will tell you!

It's all about true friendships forged in the blue flames of those Mars lights... Whether they revolved or strobed...

The current crop of bossholes & hidey-hole ass kissers don't/won't understand it and can't stand the fact that they never will.

Heh... The retirees we're celebrating didn't get to be retirees by being stupid. Some are actually insulted by all this hollow sounding "it's for the retirees you selfish bastards."

All the ones we know have said they don't give a damn about a "holiday party."

They just want to get out of Chicago and live their lives as free men.

We'll be attending a few "quiet affairs" off the beaten path to celebrate some dear friends going on "extended furlough." Or we could call it parole?

Not quite like the retirement parties of old but far better than the sorry, one-way affairs of late.

Sorry... No bossholes or front office hidey-hole people allowed.

Some of us are particular about the company we keep.

If you're a cop, you should desire to do your celebrating under a bushel basket... It keeps prying/lying eyes away.

GOD Bless our retirees...

GOD save the rest of us still standing a post...

What you folks are forgetting, is that we honor our retirees at these parties. For most, it will be a very special night to be enjoyed with friends and family.

So... put all your whiny bullShi$ aside and come out to support the men and women that deserve it.

One of the reasons I go to the party is a chance to socialize with people I work with, outside of work. If you're married, have kids, school or a part time job/business or are over 40, getting together with friends/acquaintances from work is hard to accomplish. No, I don't "love" them all and some I really don't care for and they probably feel the same about me, but I have fond memories of having a couple of drinks with the 3 coppers I used to work with that are dead now. Cheers buddies, I miss all of you!

All this bitching about camaraderie. That camaraderie came from most being young men and military veterans. It's not the same now, there are women in the mix and that changes things dramatically. It used to be a frat house party, woo hoo! Now it's a date night. Different rules, different behavior and just a little more inhibited as far as behavior is concerned. It's not going back to the old way so we just have to adjust.

Unfortunately, Patrol is the "back end" of the police department.

Nobody cares about Patrol.

Until such time as people claim their lives against a government that nurtures dependence, we are circling the drain and there won't be a happily ever after....

anyone who buys a ticket to one of these is soft

by orders, chicago police officers are not allowed to drink, even in their own backyards

yet you are going to drive to a venue and consume multiple beverages in front of bosses and co workers and then drive home?

not too smart. but then, getting on this job doesn't require much smarts does it

By order we're not allowed to drink!

Don't think so

9/30/2012 05:01:00 PM

There is NO order that says we cannot drink, 'even in our own back yards'. If you think there is one, please go find it and publish it here. You're gonna be gone a long time, though, because it does NOT exist.

Amen! So well said. I only have 11 years and still remember those times. Being the Police was respected. We watched out for one another. You could go to your bosses for help... It was a brotherhood/ sisterhood... Now the Dept has succeeded in conquering and dividing us to the point where we no longer care about anything but the 1st and the 16th. Damn shame.

Sometimes you go to these parties just to see the entertainment, last year at 019 holiday party,a domestic was being watched involving a tac sgt and a PO . Both had their spouses at the party and were doing everything they could to stay away from one another. Booze and shit like that made it pretty funny. Sometimes its worth the price of admission.

When I retired, I did go the Christmas party to get my plaque and something like a thank you certificate of service. Ho hum. The fun part is you get handed the mike so you can say a few words. Mine? All four of them? Drum rolllll... Run silent, run deep. Handed the mike back and rode off into the sunset seen from another State. Keep safe, boys and girls.

I think the original poster was referring to the Rules & Regulations, specifically Rule 15.

"V. RULES OF CONDUCT

In addition to the positive requirements of all the foregoing sections, the following rules of conduct set forth expressly prohibited acts. Prohibited acts include:

Rule 15
Intoxication on or off duty."

So, you can drink in your backyard, you're just not allowed to get intoxicated. And certainly don't drink before you have to report to work. Know your directives, otherwise you might find yourself before the Police Board; and ignorance is not a valid excuse.

I'm not the original person who stated that but he is partially right. It's not a general order but look at the police rules and regulations #15 You can not be intoxicated on or off duty. This is very vague as most rules are interpreted. It can only take some one or two drinks to be considered intoxicated. Now before you bash me, yes I drink and have for the over 20 years on this job. And I will have many more in a few short months when I will be enjoying the freedom of retirement.

I am a college educated "hairgel" copper with a nice spot on tac- 20 miles away from my house. I work hard, listen to people with more time on than myself, respect rank, am nice to other cops, slide by every job I can, take pride in my appearance, never bitch and am an all around good guy. I go to the Christmas party to support the retirees and get drunk. I am also not a depressive cynic like the guy who said everyone with less than 20 years on sucks. Its not all of the young people that ruined the job its changes in society at every level that have reflected in the faces of those you see around you. There certainly are a lot of thing to remember fondly from times gone by but young people are not not the root of all evil as you seem to believe. Fuck you.

Most of the people I respect or admire are already retired, or in too many cases, have already passed away, and those are the ones I would care about being there. They're the ones whose respect I would be proud to have.

I don't need some 5-10 year wonder clapping to show respect. 99% of them have no clue what real men (and women) used to be made of. And that is unfortunate.
