Memorial Horses
- A charity that provides financial support to injured Chicago police officers and the families of those killed in the line of duty will install as many as 100 life-size horse statues throughout downtown Chicago this fall, organizers said Sunday at an event honoring fallen officers.
The program is modeled after the Cows on Parade public art installation, which began in Chicago in 1999 and has since traveled the globe, raising more than $25 million for nonprofit organizations.
The horse sculptures, manufactured at a Logan Park statuary, are designed to resemble Chicago’s Mounted Patrol Unit horses. Each will be decorated by a local artist and named for a fallen officer, according to organizers. The sculptures will be placed at tourism destinations, corporate atriums, parks, plazas and private businesses from September through November.
Sculpture sponsorships will start at $2,500 and the statues will be auctioned off to the public after the display concludes, organizers said. Net proceeds from sponsorships and from the auction will go to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.
We'll post pictures of the finished products if we run across any. We'd also suggest that people/coppers be aware that these will undoubtedly be targets for ::ahem:: wilding yutes at some point - that isn't a pessimistic view, that's a realist observation.

I made arrests on the cows being mutilated. There was even cows stolen. I can't imagine what will happen now. Glad I'm not working down there to see these targets. This sounds like it's not going to be good. God Bless our mounted unit and of course our fallen.

How about you call or contact them yourself?
Went to the Area 4 Memorial ride. Always a nice turnout and it was a beautiful day. There were probably over 1000 bikes. Thinking about it though...$35.00 per rider...all that ride did was pay 1/3 of Phil's salary. Every time you turn around it's one fund raiser after another, plus there are corporate sponsors. There has got to be millions. How about giving back to the Coppers...the working ones. Maybe buy each Copper a new vest??? The vest could save and prevent a catastrophic injury or death of an Officer...

The town of Cicero was sued by their Police Officers and successfully won the lawsuit forcing the town of Cicero to pay the deficit and bring the pension up to par. So...even for a town like Cicero to have to pay...it could be done here. Quit giving so called...FREE SHIT...to undeserving leaches. Everytime you turn around theres another organization created or oversight commitee created to steal more free money with lame ass ideas. Motto should be...EARN IT. This Country is going to hell...with these political hacks opening the gates.

Good intentions, bad concept. Even the most innocent use of the horses such as putting the kids on or near the resin horses will do nothing to honor or show respect to the fallen hero that the horse is honoring. I can see a spate of Facebook photos of idiots throwing up gang signs near the horses. The cynic in me believes that someone has a big resin contract that's why this project was selected.
This is a dumb, dumb scheme. We should be more subtle in our fundraising. This is going to be like the NYPD hashtag screw-up.

If any po or anyone else can sue the city for the funding, it would have been done. I'm sure the FOP attorneys, CFD attorneys along with attorneys specializing in labor law woould have done sop if it were possible. No way any attorneys would not have taken the case if they thought they had a chance of winning. This isn't a problem unique with the CPD. Its nationwide and affects pension plans in most states so my guess is by now an attirney would have filed a lawsuit.

Do a social experiment. Put a horse in Garfield Park, Douglas PArk, and Jackson Park. Put another in Edison Park, Jefferson Park, and Edgebrook Park…after 6 months, put them on display at Daley Plaza! There ya go Holder, NOW we're talking about it!

I agree...now I know some people will defend him and say that his salary comes from the contributions made by corporate sponsors but 115K is not appropriate. Is he in it to help out coppers and their families or is he in it for himself? He already has a six figure pension, no need to be greedy. I'm not saying he should work for free but at least take a reasonable salary. Taking less means more funds available for those in need. I doubt he's in need. I'm seriously considering stopping by contributions to the fund.

Off topic but what in the hell does George Lucas and a Star Wars Museum have to do with Chicago? If you are a Bears tailgater you should be furious,it's taking the little property left not to mention the eventual cost overruns.
has any city retiree failed to get his or her check? until that happens, it seems unlikely the courts will intervene, especially given that Chicago is not currently violating state law as far as pension funding goes.

Hey guys, [I’m]…looking for a…quick favor. I’m a Cicero Firefighter…son of a Chicago Police Officer [John Mathews] that was killed…May 21, 1988. He was killed down the street from the house we lived in, in the Hegewisch Community. All of his killers have [since] been released…the last two…paroled [in] 1999. One of those men, [name removed for respect to the Officer’s Memory] ([was] also convicted of battery against a minor in 2005…which he served another year in prison)…the more brutal of the five has since come back to the [same] neighborhood…coaching in the Hegewisch Babe Ruth [youth baseball] League, we were able to have him removed [in June of] this year by the President of National Babe Ruth League (the local charter is run by his friends). [He] has… claimed…we are violating his civil rights…and gone to the media (nothing has been printed or aired yet…). On July 30 at 7PM the…League is having an open meeting at Steve’s Lounge in Hegewisch (13200 S Baltimore Ave, Chicago, IL 60633). [He] is…bringing family, friends, players [and] parents (the few…that support him)…to show support…and why he [continues to] deserve to be a role model to…young kids. My family is hoping to reach as many police and firefighters…able to make…the meeting to show the…League…we will not stand for murderers mentoring young minds, I would also like the…entire Babe Ruth Board to step down due to their gross negligence [by] keeping [him]…as a coach, having full knowledge of [his] history, especially in the neighborhood…he caused so much harm to. The hedge funds and "investors" in our pension fund probably have 35-50% gains on our money...while we remain funded at 32-35%. Of course none of the profits go back into the fund. Every year for the past several years we are told that the fund is only funded at 32-35%. It's incredible that the police pension fund is a fund filled with hundred of millions of dollars that has not budged as far as investment income in this multi-year bull market. And with even more of coppers contributions continuing during this same 6 year period, still the same percentage of funding. It's absolutely heinous.
They tag our memorial wall. Can only imagine what they will do to these poor horses.

You're welcome. The help came from officers only. Not the memorial fund, they only collect our money. Corporate funds which are much larger do not go to help officers but to pay for admin expenses I understand.

I have to agree with you about the fund. My son was shot and seriously injured in an on duty situation. Shortly thereafter he was contacted by the Memorial fund and asked if he had any immediate financial needs. They were willing to help. He was in a good financial situation and didnt need any help, so he respectfully declined. It was nice for the to offer, other officers may have needed their help.

Where do you get your information. You are completely incorrect. Talk out of your ass more, you've mad a career of it jackass. Be a man and find facts, then be a bigger man and apologize.
It is one big scam. No one wants to admit it, talk about it but it is. Phil pushed it when he was on top, for ? retirement. They take care of families but they take care of Phil first.
Every December my husband and two of his friends (none are LE) donate greatly and help deliver gifts to the kids of fallen/disabled officers. I make up stockings for the kids filled with goodies. If it wasn't for the CPMF, this wouldn't get done. Don't bash something that helps these people with REAL needs. As for the horses? Sadly, the cockroaches will ruin them.

There was just a whole batch of ugly resin statues vandalized, knocked over, in the lakefront parks. Looked like some kid had scattered a toybox and not picked it up. Stupid-looking things, brightly colored, little girls in dresses wearing flying goggles. Supposed to "honor the Tuskeegee Airmen" yet again.
"Less is more." There isn't much that could improve on the blue water and green grass and cool breezes of Chicago's beautiful lakefront. It was always enough for us when I was a kid -- but, back then, we had souls.
Even the simple working people could appreciate natural beauty...everything did not have to be reduced to the Lowest Common Denominator and made into a giant pre-K for those suffering from "Moderate Cognitive Delay."
Time to run. Gotta Instagram a "selfie!"
