This Sounds Familiar

  • Illinois needs to cut penalties for marijuana use and boost them for gun offenses if it's really going to curb street violence, according to Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez.

At a hearing of a special legislative panel today, the county's top prosecutor conceded that what she called "a shift in philosophy" might not be popular with everyone, but is needed if officials are to keep neighborhoods safe with limited resources.

"Our criminal sentencing policies should target those illegally carrying firearms who pose the greatest safety threat to our communities, and right now our unlawful use of a weapon penalties do not go far enough," Ms. Alvarez said.

“Gang members themselves tell us that our gun laws are 'a joke'. They are not a deterrent, and if we do not take action those criminals will continue on the path of gun violence and retaliation that has unfortunately become the norm in too many neighborhoods."
Oh, she got the idea from gangbangers. That's cute.

Meanwhile, nine years of posts and comments by the readers of SCC pointing out that the penalties for murder are around five-to-seven-years on average and gun charges result in boot camp have no impact on anything.

Let me honestly ask: Who the hell is in Cook County or IDOC for a marijuana crime? I've had the state nolle felony weed cases, let alone the waste of time dime bag cases that are always dropped. I can't imagine that there's anyone incarcerated for weed in this county unless they were caught driving around with some serious weight. So why does she even bring up weed at all, pandering to the people?

I have never seen anyone get actual prison time in a weed case. So it just goes to show how out of touch Anita is. And with her offices frequent reluctance to even approve uuw charges she should clean up her own office before pointing fingers.

Must be getting close to election time.

Time to give the speeches to conjure up some images that change is in the works and it's just right around the corner.

Oh..Oh, if we only had just a little more time. WE ARE SO CLOSE...lolol

After the ballots are counted then we can get back to the hooray for me and my corporate campaign contributors and eff the rest of y'all cause I got mine.

These people are not coming around. We're all being played.

It's the old management line "you're right but these things take time and we're working on "

I challenge anyone to go down the list of recent campaign promises and see how many were kept and not just kept but resulted in the things that we were told.

Anita grow a set of balls and start a movement to just legalize pot already!!!! For fuck sake just think of new taxes that can be levied upon the sellers, buyers and growers of pot. You could fund our pensions and conjure up new free shit to give to all of your voters. It could be like reparations to the African Americans who suffer from institutional violence. A green card with a spending account for you relatives down south. You prob could run for president on that platform. Gosh maybe you could reduce the national debt. Or you could get really crazy, find A TIF fund and build some more prison space and enforce all the laws on the books. Wait who am I kidding that will never happen.

Side note Mike Brown was not an unarmed teen. He was a high level assailant who's actions contributed to his death. Anyone know how I can obtain a support Daren Wilson tee shirt? they are sold out on the website.

Hey - DON'T COMPLAIN. Vote someone else in.

Time to clean house - in ALL offices. Alvarez must go. She is no "crime fighter". Nor does she have the cops' back.

Forget about what you think of Rauner - vote him in.

Stop the cycle of "rewarding incompetence" and turning a blind eye on political hacks and maybe things will change.

One thing you can bet your WHOLE pension on - if things don't change, you will be giving some of that pension back.

Don't think so? I already outlined how it will happen with those "tax everybody" Dems.

You could set up a law saying pensions could not be taxed UNLESS they are taken out-of-state. If they go out-of-state, two things kick in.

One is the "cost-of-living" argument. You got paid more because you lived in Chicago and your "union" fought for more money because of "cost-of-living".

Well, "Cost-of-Living" is a double-edged sword. You move somewhere else, you may have to kick back 5-10%.

ALSO, you move out of the economy that paid for your pension, you need to give some of that money back because you are not spending it to sustain the economy you made the pension in. That could easily be another 5-10%.

Either option -- it's a solid way to get some of that money back.

And here is the beauty of this "tax", you are out-of-state and no threat to any politician in office. No votes to worry about and no issues about breaking any Constitutional promises.

You moved out - you lose.

Don't believe that will happen? After all these years of taxing and thinking up ways to increase revenues instead of building the state on solid economic ground?

The guy out-of-state is no threat, just another source of untapped money.

Keep voting the incompetent ones in. They don't know anything else except to create new taxes in order to pay themselves.

How about cracking down on the kid glove treatment for multiple offenders. These are the real predators. Stop pandering to a voting block. Stop acting like a politician and start acting like a prosecutor.

Anytime some ELECTED official says they have an answer to violence and it includes lessoning sentences for any crime we arrest people for, they are blowing smoke. It really is that simple.

I can't decide if you are on Rahm/Rauner's payroll, or if you are just a typical knee-jerk Republican PO.

Anyways, read Public Law 104-95.

Passed by a Republican congress and signed by Bill Clinton on 10 Jan 96.

They can't tax our pension if we move out of here, period. No source taxes are allowed.

Cost of living reductions for out of staters? Unconstitutional violation of the interstate commerce clause, period.

Rauner is Rahm's sugar daddy, he is not your friend. They want that money for their friends, wake up.

And no, I'm not a knee-jerk Democrat. In fact I've voted Republican more often then not. Not this time.

Rauner, like George Ryan and Jim Thompson before him is the combine candidate.

Who cares? Make the penalty for UUW 199 year mandatory jail time, it still won't get enforced in this joke of a county, the SA will lessen charge, judges will refuse to find defendants guilty because they feel their sensibilities of justice outweigh the law and the desire of the citizenry.

This hyper-liberal shithole won't ever hold anyone accountable, well, unless it is a non-minority police officer, then you are in some deep shit.

If you're thinking about protesting when they steal the pensions...

(pdf)First, *ATP 3-39.33 the US army manual stating how to kill unarmed protestors during civil disturbances with max. effect

And just to make sure they can get the job done.

Congress Proposes Law Banning Body Armor In The Land Of The Free -- H.R. 5344 is a bill currently going through Congress that would ban the purchase of body armor.

Heh, and people are worried about the ISIS boogie man getting them?

By the late 1920s, Joseph Stalin became the unchallenged leader of the Soviet Union after having eliminated his opposition.

He topped it off in 1929 by serving a decisive blow to anyone that would dare to oppose him by outlawing private gun ownership in the country.

From that year on until 1953 when Stalin died, it’s estimated that more than 20 million Soviet citizens that were seen as a threat to the country’s leadership.

People were rounded up and either murdered outright, or sent to infamous gulag labor camps.

Stalin is an extreme case. But history is ripe with examples of governments which disarm their citizens, only to engage in serious oppression afterwards.

Communist China. Nazi Germany. Cambodia. Guatemala. Uganda. The list goes on and on. Pacification of the citizens is almost always a prerequisite to totalitarianism.

There have been a lot of attempts to disarm, or at least partially disarm, people in the US throughout history as well.

Each time there’s a major shooting somewhere, the chant to ban firearms grows louder....

When this place collapses economically and the paychecks stop who's gonna come to work and more importantly when the money is worthless who is going to sell you anything in exchange for it?

All we will have at this point is our friendships and relationships with others and by the way. about 90% of the people that you think are your friends today (because of the money) will be gone when it becomes every man for themselves.

People that you thought were your friends for 10, 20, 30, years, our 'brothers' will be no place to be found when the money is useless.

The people that throw their morals and ethics out the window while telling themselves "I am just doing my job" will be the first to disappear. The sell-outs for a buck.

We hope it doesn't happen but it looks inevitable.

If you boost the penalties for gun offenses Toni Preckwinkle will get angry and demand they be let go on I-Bonds and Quinn will give them 2 for 1 good time plus early release. They will be owed time if they have to sit because of a high bond. Maybe Quinn will let them put custody time in the bank, like our CU time, which they can use the next time they get thrown in jail. You know, a guy has 200 days in the custody bank and he can use that against a two year sentence and walk out and just use his banked time.

Damn, I am writing a letter to Quinn and will let him know about that. Ought to save lots of money and get him lots of south and west side votes.

Anita, who prosecutes gun crime? Were you absent from work or did you have a TIA with memory loss? Maybe if you prosecuted the gun crime as you are permitted, it would not be a joke to your advisors. Perhaps you could insist on more serious charges and longer jail time, or jail time in general. Stop acting like it isn't your fault and do your job. YOU are the boss, so start acting like one.

and he's on the street

How much do you trust Rauner on your pensions? He doesn't like the "union bosses" and he wants to "shake up" Springfield, remember? I know, he has made statements about protecting police and fire pensions. But . . . he has made a lot of statements. Like this one. Go to the link (http://politics.suntimes.com/article/springfield/watch-rauner-praises-quinn-extraordinaryleadership/fri-08222014-811am) and see him praising Quinn (and the Springfield Dems he now so condescendingly derides) with Quinn in the background. This was 2010, folks. Here's the relevant text, but it's really more fun to watch:

"Good morning, everyone. Again, my name is Bruce Rauner, chairman of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. I’d like to just do two very simple things. One is to just say thank you. One is to make a commitment. First, on behalf of the members, the corporate members, of the Convention and Tourism Bureau, on behalf of the entire business community in Chicago, I would like to say thank you to our leaders. Thank you to Mayor Daley, thank you to Governor Quinn, thank you to our legislative leaders in Springfield, Speaker Madigan, President Cullerton and also, thank you Trustee Riley for your leadership. On behalf of the business community, I want to say that you have shown extraordinary teamwork, dedication, and leadership on behalf of our convention and visitor industry."

Those average five to seven year sentences for murder ARE a joke.

Funnier still is the closure rate on murder. Only about 30% of all murder cases are closed. This isn't intended as an insult to Chicago cops, but it's a true statement.

SA office will tell you that they got the 40 years, the state of IL let him out, go blame them. SA office has near total immunity from civil liability. They really have to be negligent to get sued and lose. Very tough case to bring much less to win.
