Knife to a Gunfight Again

Paraphrasing Clint Smith here:
  • "An armed man will kill [an idiot armed with a knife] with monotonous regularity."
  • A 17-year-old boy who was shot to death by a Chicago Police officer Monday night on the Southwest Side has been identified.

Laquan McDonald of the 500 block of North Springfield was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
And why did he need to be shot?
  • The teen used the knife to puncture the front passenger-side tire of a squad car and damage its front windshield before leading officers on a foot chase, police said.

Other officers used a squad car to try and box the boy in against a fence near 41st and Pulaski, Camden said. An officer shot him in the chest when he “refused to comply with orders to drop the knife and continued to approach the officers,” police said.
They gave him numerous opportunities to surrender. He declined them for whatever reason, but it's pretty cut and dried. Well done Officers. The usual suspects are bitching to various news organizations, but so far, no one is biting

Don't forget Officers...

"USDOJ Investigating Police Shootings of Subjects Not Armed With Guns for Possible Civil Rights Violations"

Yes... They are here in Chicago digging through multiple years of The Police being very unfortunately forced to shoot/kill these hard headed, mind-locked, drunk/high/crazy, death wish having drains on society...

We'll say it again:
"It's The Police who are the problem in Chicago. Once we fix THEM, everything else will fall in place."

Well... Belaboring the obvious aside, why the fixation on fixing The Police when they're doing what the law and common fucking sense commands them to do in these fucked up situations?

The smarter than everybody else carpetbaggers and their knee-walking, turncoat, craven wretch home grown collaborators, flunkies, yes-men and lackeys who are currently running the show in Chicago are doing their damnedest to keep the anti-Police sentiment hotted up and on the front burner.

"Why are you Cops shooting so many young men in our community? He woulda dropped the gun/knife/brick/stick/table leg/big can o' corn/hunk of broken mirror glass/length of garden hose filled with sand and a 1890's iron doorknob pop riveted to the business end-if you had asked him ONE MORE TIME!"

...Or some such silly shit like that.

Bravo Officers.
Your primary task is to do what is necessary to protect yourselves and your fellow officers.

Should that other muthafuckah force your hand in a lethal force situation then by all means oblige his rotten ass and let the municipal corporate lawyers and his survivors/litter mates duke it out over how much his non-contributory carcass is worth.

Policemen are precious... They actually stand for and mean something to society.

OK joyful haters... Flame away.

And a big F/U to the people thinking it's amusing to have the Feds root around at leisure years after the fact in a Policeman's split second decision to save himself and others.

So fucking what if the offender didn't have a gun?
Human beings kill the shit out of each other with their bare hands.

These dirty fucks are all OK with attending a Policeman's funeral though... It makes them feel so very "necessary."

Instead of fucking with Policemen, why arent the feebs rummaging through the underwear drawers of the assholes who underfunded and looted our pensions and the other assholes who cheered from the sidelines?

2 from Liberia screened for Ebola after falling ill on flights to Chicago

Oct. 10, 2014 10:10 PM

"Two people who arrived at O'Hare International Airport on Tuesday from Liberia were under observation at Chicago hospitals as part of the city's infectious disease protocols after they experienced nausea and other illnesses during their flights...

Officials said they decided against Ebola testing for the two, who were traveling separately, after medical evaluations.

"The announcement follows confirmation from city officials that four Chicago hospitals — Rush University Medical Center, University of Chicago Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children's Hospital — have agreed to take Ebola patients from other hospitals and health care providers, should any cases appear in Chicago.

"[One] passenger, an adult traveling alone from Liberia, reported nausea and diarrhea. The passenger reported having been diagnosed with typhoid fever in August but had a normal temperature and reported no known risk of exposure to Ebola during a screening...

"Since Typhi is human-restricted...chronic carriers become the crucial reservoir and can persist for decades for further spread of the disease..."

"Among the infections [Typhoid Mary"} Mallon caused, at least three deaths were attributed to her. However, due to her use of aliases and refusal to cooperate, the exact number is not known. Some have estimated that she may have caused 50 fatalities..."

If a police officer would have let him sliced and diced someone would that family have the right to sue for not taken any action. The officer could say I asked him politely to drop the knife. The man who raped you daughter or wife ran away I asked him politely to stop. Sorry you were just robbed I asked him politely to return your property but he refused, I am trying my hardest to be the best polite police officer you demanded after all of you silly law suits. I am tired of being second guessed by dumb juries who listen to bullshit lawyers These trials take years when I have only seconds to decide. I on the other hand lose my job and future. The tax payer losses millions. I have a question. Do CPD bullet resistant vests work with knives ?

"...reported no known risk of exposure to Ebola during a screening..."

The very same thing Duncan said -- after having carried a dying Ebola patient in his arms with no protection at all, jumping into a taxicab, and taking her to the "hospital" -- an old warehouse with some tables and chairs and a few nail holes punched in the locked steel door for people to yell through, begging for help that's not coming.

The legal systems of two countries were moving on Duncan -- he was about to be charged with aggravated assault by Dallas County prosecutors when he died.

I get the feeling that his case won't be the last...

Oh WTF!

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/10/21/two-passengers-from-liberia-to-chicago-quarantined/

CHICAGO (CBS) – Medical personnel in Chicago said they are using “an abundance of caution” for two patients being evaluated for Ebola, even though neither has been diagnosed with the disease, after each of them became sick on separate flights from Liberia to O’Hare International Airport.
CBS 2’s Susanna Song reports neither patient – a child and an adult who are not related – has a fever, and neither has been tested for Ebola, but both are being monitored at local hospitals.
The child began vomiting after boarding a flight from Liberia to Chicago, and was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital after arriving in Chicago, to undergo stringent infection control protocols. The child later was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago, where he was in isolation Wednesday morning. His family has shown no signs of Ebola, but is under quarantine until an evaluation has been completed.

its up to each individual police officer to make a split second decision to shoot or not to shoot;

perhaps using your night stick and form a wedge line, in group formation shout "back sir".."back sir";

while holding your night stick and moving forward motion using your night stick as a weapon to make repeated strikes at the mechanical weapon displayed and waved by this offender could have prevented this use of LETHAL FORCE.

all responding officers on scene at the time of the split second decision to shoot should be required to attend the one week course at the police academy: Crisis Intervention Training

we become more proficient with handling these type of armed offender encounters.

If these options fail like waiting for the Taser option to arrive on scene otherwise take care of business-lethal force is required:(

I've always made jokes about the fact that the center of my FOP badge is rotated off center and that they didn't care enough or were not observent enough to notice it should have been a reject.

None the less, it bothers me to see such a recent retirement star up for sale. If anyone knows/knew a P.O. named John, Star # 3758 who came on the job 09 Sep 80, give him or his family a call and let them know.

And, yes, I am aware that it might be the family that is doing the selling.

Lethal Force — Officers use lethal weapons to gain control of a situation. Should only be used if a suspect poses a serious threat to the officer or another individual.

Officers use deadly weapons such as firearms to stop an individual's actions.

Any copper who's being threatened by an individual armed with a knife is justified in using deadly force. Quit your armchair quarterbacking. If you believe it was a bad shooting and a taser or baton should have been used, get off your fat ass and apply to be a CPD officer. Maybe one day real soon you'll be able to face off with a future brain surgeon armed with a knife and you can employ verbal judo. Let us know how that works out for you. Oh wait, never mind, I'll just read about it in the obituaries. Asshat!

Wrong!!! I don't know about the media, however Chicago Police Officers are trained on excited delirium. Not all people with ED are completely out of control. I find it completely ironic that everyone of the protestors (violent or otherwise) that is calling for the arrest of Officer Wilson is promoting a good ole lynching. The evidence, released in drips and drabs, has indicated strongly that the shooting was justified. Now the autopsy report has been released and it is quite clear from the report that the shooting was justified.

http://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/stltoday.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/c/e0/ce018d0c-5998-11e4-b700-001a4bcf6878/5447202ea9b4e.pdf.pdf

Yet, everyone with an agenda is stirring the pot ( and probably smoking it too), and fomenting a figurative and "legal" lynching. Never mind the facts, give us our pound of flesh . . .if you don't, we'll just go cultural and burn this mutha down.

Stay strong CPD and try your best to use the right amount of force.

Before anyone bashes you too hard, let me thank you for your support. Now let me ask you if you would be willing to accept the risk of getting a life threatening cut to try to take a knife away from a violent offender? Would you risk getting an artery cut or multiple stitches?

The vests are not knife proof, we don't have a bunch of shields handy while we are driving around or walking around and you have, understandably, no knowledge of close quarters combat or you would not have asked such questions.

Perhaps you could put yourself for a moment in the shoes of the men and women of law enforcement and ask yourself how frightened you would be if confronted with this person and how much you would be willing to risk in order to go home from a thankless job. I myself would encourage any cop or civilian to shoot a person with a knife. Any less force is foolish if you wish to stay alive.

I try very hard to take the side of police in violent altercations with open criminals, thugs.

I am 100% in support of officer Wilson in the Ferguson MO case.

That said, I would like to encourage Chicago Police officers to try very hard to use lethal gun force unless they absolutely have to. A teen with a knife is certainly dangerous, but a trained group of police men could handle many such confrontations without killing the perps with guns.

How about long clubs, stun guns? Rush the perp with shields?

I agree, was it necessary to shoot Lakquan? Why not issue officers very long sticks such as the knights of medieval times used or perhaps loud boom boxes to discombobulate the teen or perhaps the music could trick the teen brain to begin dancing thus dropping the knife.

A 17yo is dead because no one had a taser....that's pathetic

=======

Nothing says a taser should be used against an edged weapon. The Use of Force Model always says to use a level or force greater than that used by the assailant/aggressor etc. Taser is not even equal to a knife and is for uncooperative subjects.

Use of knife equals a gun is used by the police. Look on YouTube at what someone with a knife can do real quick. I've seen training videos of a knife wielding aggressor getting the best of an officer with a gun if within 20 feet and the gun is still holstered.

Stop with your pathetic crap. Educate yourself on what a skilled knife fighter can do. For someone who knows anatomy one little old slice can open up the brachial artery in the arm and death results after that very soon.

Why don't the officers have sling shots issued to them as an option for less than lethal force…Laquan would still be alive if the officer would have used a slingshot to knock the knife out of his hand. Laquan may have grown to be the next president but now the world will never know. Shame on you CPD...

You have a weapon in your hand?

The Police tell you to drop it as a mere courtesy...
There is NOTHING in ILCS that legally compels Policemen to give anybody a "warning" or endeavor not to shoot them "so hard."

Y'all cowards aren't blowing up Dude's Farcebook page when he shoots the shit out of Pookie so why all this crying and handwringing about "Po-leece cudda just knocked the knife outta that baby boy's han' 'steada shootin' him down on da skreets like a mad dawg!"

"Y'all Po-leece actin' like y'all scared to die or sump'n!"
(Actual stupidity said out loud at a beat meeting once upon a time and the topic was gang loitering. What was maddening was the chorus of agreement and head nods that went along with that ignant-assed statement.)

"Y'all cops just mad and full of hate for no reason!"

Yeah...

At the risk of saying it once again for the college miseducated, and boring the front line troops among us, stop taking social justice classes, they just make you stupider, I can think my way through this with minimal violence so we can have a happy ending!

Knives never jamb. They never need reloading. You can stab someone several times, most certainly fatally in a couple of seconds. If you are within 21 feet, that's the depth of your garage, Einstein, you can stab someone several times before they can pull a firearm out to protect themselves. Under stress, fine motor skills deteriorate, ie, shooting a firearm accurately, people like YOU get our soldiers killed in combat with your second guessing and you're trying to get the police killed because you don't want some sociopath to be harmed.

For all you taser people, I know someone who nearly got stabbed because the taser he deployed failed to operate correctly. He was saved from terrible injury by a coworker with quick reflexes pulling him out of the way JUST IN TIME as the asshole tried to stab him.

Bottom line is that too many people watch too much TV where the detectives or beat officers subdue assailants armed with a knife. In real life it doesn't work like that. There is no way a po can be trained to take a knife away from and armed man.

its up to each individual police officer to make a split second decision to shoot or not to shoot;

perhaps using your night stick and form a wedge line, in group formation shout "back sir".."back sir";

while holding your night stick and moving forward motion using your night stick as a weapon to make repeated strikes at the mechanical weapon displayed and waved by this offender could have prevented this use of LETHAL FORCE.

all responding officers on scene at the time of the split second decision to shoot should be required to attend the one week course at the police academy: Crisis Intervention Training

we become more proficient with handling these type of armed offender encounters.

If these options fail like waiting for the Taser option to arrive on scene otherwise take care of business-lethal force is required:(

That's the funniest thing I've read in a while.

If,by chance, you're not joking, I have the perfect crisis intervention tool-it's called .45 ACP.

The right amount of force is that which gets an officer home safely at the end of their tour. During my career there has been over 40 officers killed in the line. I don't give much of a shit about using a wee bit too much force on a wacko with a weapon. I just don't want people at my funeral to say "If only he used enough force..."

10-year-old shooter: 'I want to be an inspiration'

updated 3:43 PM EDT, Fri October 17, 2014

"(CNN) -- She picks up the custom handgun painted in her favorite colors, purple and black.

"Her long, black braid bounces slightly with each of the six shots she fires. Metal pings signify when she's hit the mark. She runs to the next target. Nine more shots. Reload.

"Meet Shyanne Roberts, a 10-year-old competitive shooter who is out to prove something: Children with guns don't always mean disaster.

"I want to be an inspiration to other kids and be a leader," said the girl. "Kids and guns don't always mean bad things happen."

"Shyanne competes alongside junior shooters, who are participants younger than 18, and even adults. Last year, she beat out adult women to place second in the Women's Division of the New Jersey Ruger Rimfire Challenge.

"On October 31, she will square off against 200 of the top women shooters at the Brownell's Lady 3-Gun Pro-Am Challenge in Covington, Georgia. Shyanne is the youngest competitive shooter registered at the female-only event, according to the match director. The top shooter has a chance to win $5,000, as well as items from a prize table of guns, ammo and more..."

NYPD using the right amount of force. Skip the taser, go directly to pistol if rifle is not handy.

New York City hatchet attack leaves officer in critical condition

A hatchet-wielding attacker charged a group of New York City police officers posing for a photograph on Thursday, wounded two, one critically, before the assailant was shot dead, police said.

The officers were on foot patrol when they were asked by a freelance photographer to pose for a picture on a Queens street at about 2 p.m., a New York Police Department spokesman said.

Suddenly a man carrying a hatchet charged the officers, swinging it and striking one officer in the right arm and then swinging it again and striking a second officer in the head, the spokesman said.

The remaining two officers fired their weapons at the man, hitting him. The suspect, whose identity was not yet confirmed but who was said to be approximately 32 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both officers were being treated at Jamaica Hospital, with the 25-year-old officer who was hit in the head undergoing surgery and in critical condition. The other officer, who is 24 years old, was in stable condition, the spokesman said.

"At this point, no known motive for this attack has been established," Police Commissioner William Bratton told a press conference.

Police declined to comment on media reports that the attack was tied to terrorism and that an internal memo urged officers to maintain a heightened level of awareness in the wake of recent attacks in Canada.

All four officers involved in the New York City incident graduated on July 8 from the city Police Academy.

No, a 17yo is dead because he started out breaking the law, got caught, and didn't follow verbal commands.

This would have been a CDTP with an I-bond from court the next day. Instead, the offender chose to make it a justifiable homicide.

"Your primary task is to do what is necessary to protect yourselves and your fellow officers."

Actually it's not. Your primary purpose is to protect the public. It's not that police shouldn't protect themselves, but the "whatever it takes to come home safe" attitude is a big part of the current problem with policing and hiring/retaining unsuitable individuals, folks who only feel safety in numbers and panic when they don't have that.

While I don't personally have a problem with mopes like this being shot, when the person is just standing there and refusing to drop the knife, but not actually advancing, you need to have someone at least attempt to zap them with the Tazer, as a prequel to shooting them, that's what it was developed for and it looks better in the AAR.

If you're a "fear biter" who never should have got hired to do a man's job that does a mag dump every time "I felt threatened", you need to find another one. Don't be making fun of pussy shit like that and then doing the exact same thing yourself.

What are you on about man?

YOU can check YOUR self preservation/survival impulse at the door if you want to...

You're saying that a Policeman's life has no value versus an armed miscreant refusing a LAWFUL order to drop his weapon?

"Say pretty please..."

You're goofy...
"Fear Biter?"

If you really know anything at all about Policing and Policemen, the majority hold their fire past time they're LAWFULLY justified in shooting.

STFU fella...
Your beef is with the laws governing use of force but since you can't change the law, you pick fights with Policemen and cast aspersions on their training and mindset to survive these bad encounters.

Policemen have no directed duty to protect the public.
There is plenty of litigation out there on this matter.

Again... Something you don't like but you'll have to get over it.

Yes... The Policeman's primary duty is to protect himself and his fellow officers.

Especially in this "War On The Police and All Their Concerns" era...

You're miffed because you see The Police circling their wagons and putting distance because they're realizing they have no friends, allies or clear-eyed impartial judges of the actions they have to take.

Policing is a dangerous, messy, unpredictable, treacherous, shit doo-doo job dealing with fucked-up, messy, unpredictable shit doo-doo people.

The majority aspire to work this job, give a good account of themselves, survive their 20 to 40 years and get out in one piece.

I love all the "shoot him in the knee, hit the knife out of his hand with an asp, knock the knife out of his hand.

Seriously - are these people delusional?

To all the "shoot him in the knee" believers:

I'd not go so far as to call them delusional.

There are too many civilians out there that have never shot a gun or taken a self defense course. But they watch all sorts of bullshit that Hollywood and the networks put out on TV and in movies.

As such they have no fucking clue that law enforcement is trained to shoot for center mass.

Or to put it better, I shoot at your arm, and I miss; and the bullet continues to travel until it hits something. That something could be an innocent life.
