More Guilty "Innocents"
Martin Preib puts a few more stories together and completely demolishes the so-called "Innocence Project" that released unrepentant killers and rapists back into the Chicago landscape:
- A South Side man who had his rape conviction overturned after it was proven he was forced to confess to the crime by abusive detectives working for now disgraced Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge was denied his “certificate of innocence” Thursday.
Stanley Wrice’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, gasped when Cook County Judge Thomas Byrne issued his ruling and declared that there was “substantial evidence” indicating Wrice “actively participated” in the brutal Sept. 9, 1982 sexual assault.

BTW, I followed 10G's advise on the game and lost a few bucks I could not afford. But hey, so the Bears lost by a couple of points. They sure looked good while they were loosing. They have their own sort of style. It made me feel good to be a Bears fan.
Preib does excellent work. He is more of an asset to the police than the union, and news affairs, and definitely the local media.

Check out the story- unreal. Judge issued a 44 page response in his denial which is indicative of substantial evidence against Wrice. In his claim of innocence, Wrice is accusing Burge's detectives of torturing him into confessing, and that he was unaware of the victim being gang raped and beaten in his house. Was he tortured into a confession? It's possible. Was he unaware of a woman getting beaten, raped, and burned in his house? That's complete BS. If it is proven that he was tortured, let Burge compensate him; he can use the money to buy all the cigarettes he wants while he serves his time for raping and beating that woman. David Protess and his ilk should be prosecuted for the damage he is doing not only to the victims of these criminals, but to the system as well.

Investigator Davis' father, Investigator Michael Davis Sr., was killed in the line of duty on October 24th, 1988, while serving with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Their line of duty deaths occurred exactly 26 years apart to the day.

Toughen up is right. Your not a social worker. Go in do your job, give the victim information for further assistance and go the fuck home. That's what's wrong with you ppo's your all soft as puppy shit. Did you come from a small town or out of state? Who hires you people. Talk to someone about how you're feeling. Talk to your cat, dog, anyone. Write down how you're feeling down and rip it up and throw it away. Don't bottle it up and "forget about it" because you'll start boozin, taking it out on your own family or do something irrational. Take it from someone that tried to "toughen up" and not talk about the horrors of this job. Talking about how you are feeling isn't being weak.
To the PPO- Talk to EAP. A lot of good people there to help you.

Stick with it, learn that you cannot solve the world's problems. Many people are just assholes, you will never change that. Some people you will actually help but when you don't, do not take it personally.
People really have to cooperate to make use of the help you/we offer. Many will not. So it goes. You are there for those who want our help, not for those who need it but don't want it.

I recently read Preib's book, Crooked City. I found it to be incredibly insightful and an excellent example of investigative journalism. His book has shined the light on corruption within the ASA office but importantly, the Northwestern Innocence project. I highly recommend reading this book.
I heard 005 and 024 are going to merge because it was discovered that the city is round, just like the earth and those two districts actually back up to each other.

Preib has gone to the union on several occasion to help in the fight against Northwestern Innocence Project but has been rebuffed on each occasion. The Cook County States Attorney's Office has been investigating the wrongful conviction of Alsory Simon for over a year now and still has not released the results. If anyone read Preib's book, "Crooked City", one can see what a injustice this is. The union has been ask on several occasions to issue a statement /press release in support of all the Detectives involved in this incident. (the detectives were sued in Civil Court and WON) Not only will it send a strong message to the SAO but also a moral enhancer for our current detectives. I always thought that unions are suppose to fight for it's members. I guess in order to get support from the current union leadership, one has to be on the "Dean List".

Yes, you most likely will have to convert to hours. Thats what was done when I worked 10 hour days about 10 years ago. However if yo take the time match it up on a calendar, you will see that you dont lose anything because you have more rdo's anyway. It works out just the same. I want to see how much you bitch when you get 3 four day weekends in a row...

You don't have any control over what happens out there. You can only react to it. Its a job. Concentrate on getting an RD# and gathering information for the case report and just do your job.
Actually I would suggest Yoga. Its great at clearing the mind .

10:30 AM, As "offensive" as "Injun Summer" is, I enjoy it every day, especially this time of year. The Tribune store used to sell color prints of it in the tower store (one of which proudly graces my office wall). Don't know if it is still for sale there. Probably not, just not PC, right? However, it always brings back pleasant memories of the halcyon days of my youth. Before all the bullshit.

To the brother(PPO),
You can tell by a few of the responses here that not all the stress and negativity is coming from the streets. Some comes from your peers on the job with their degrading and negative personal comments to your seemingly innocent inquiry. I'd avoid those few people, and their remarks, and stick to and live by those that are assuring and helpful. The added stress from within is not necessary or healthy.
If it still bothers you, we have an excellent program within to work it out.
We're only human, and it happens to the best of us. YOU just had the intestinal fortitude to talk about it, seek help and not keep it inside. That, in and of itself shows you are on the right track.
Follow the advice similar to (10/27/2014 05:20:00 PM) the three L's of law enforcement and you'll do just fine.

I just watched the Dick Butkus highlight tape on YouTube again just to remind myself that the Bears once had ferocious and professional players who gave their all, win or lose.
I love the quote by Deacon Jones, he said "Dick Butkus didn't want to put people in the hospital, he wanted to put you in the cemetery."
And players going back to their huddle with their helmets sideways so they were talking out of the earhole after meeting Mr Butkus. Other players who didn't know who they were after colliding with Butkus the human bulldozer. Johnny Morris was saying he was afraid of Butkus and he was on the same team!
And I don't recall Butkus ever celebrating. He got up and went and lined up again, that's all. Butkus came up to an official and growled and shoved the football to him. The official tells Butkus "Don't get smart with me Butkus, I'll bite your head off." Butkus responds "Then you would have more brains in your stomach than you have in your head."
I love those teams and those players. The best.
To the PPO:
Have two lives; one as a police officer that ends the second you take off your uniform and the second life as the average Joe citizen. Have friends and hobbies outside of this job. Friends that are not the police and will not ask you to talk about your job. Its ok to have compassion when dealing with a victim, but in some cases you have to look at them as a object and not a human being. You have to disengage your mind from what is really happening. If you sensationalise everything on this job it will eat you up. Hobbies get one that doesn't involve work related things, so shooting is not a good hobby if your trying to forget your job and distress.

Both of these posts may ultimately be posted by trolls, but I can only say that I sincerely hope the second post is a troll trying to come off as the real police. I still see some of these assholes they walk around the station acting like nobody is supposed to ever show feeling or emotions. I got to read the book by Preib, and I think every cop, judge, ASA, and AUSA should give it a read.
Preib cuts away the police mythology created by Chicago defense lawyers, journalists and academics.
He puts the evidence up front, illuminating for all to see, the truth of police cases once hidden by their personal agendas, and hysterical claims.
Preib's beating them at their game and he's winning, yet there isn't a single bit over coverage on this subject by the media.

To the Ppo, you are only human and sometimes you will experience some emotion to the devastating things we see. Be strong and remember you have to do the job and when you make arrests and get the bad guy, you have done your part. This is a great job and you are new and it will take some time to adjust. Be positive and surround yourself around coppers who are positive. It is sad to say but some, not all coppers are not the best people to hang around outside of work. Get a hobby, workout, laugh and just do your job how you were trained. You have worked very hard to get where you are, don't give up. This job is an awarding career and you will feel good about yourself as you Accquire more knowledge and experience and geting off your probation. I would be lying if I said things don't bother me at times on this job. That is when I lift my head up and be strong, knowing I made a difference and I did everything I could to make it right and even though I did everything and it may not of been the outcome I wanted, I tried. Some of these negative post are the people who choose to believe they are invincible and hold everything inside, not knowing that anger and frustration will make them snap. I cant be for certain but they are probably the same people that go to the bar and drink their sorrows and emotions away and pretend to be hard on the outside and go home to no one. Keep you head up, it will get better. God bless you ppo. I'm glad you came foward and vented and hope if you and any other officers feel the same way to open upt to others and take advantage of the services the city offers. We need to stick together and help each other out.

I am a PPO. I like my new career but at times it is very overwhelming. I find my job at a lot of times to be sad and depressing. One day we dealt with a pregnant woman who was being physically abused by her boyfriend. She had bruises on her face, arms and back. I felt bad and upset. I confided in my fto and other experienced officers. They all told me to "toughen up" and "think positive".
How do you deal with the stress and depressing/negative scenes? What do you do? How do you cope? Thanks for your insight whether you are a ppo, several years, close to retirement or already retired.

Maybe social work would be better for you.

I don't drink or smoke pal. I have a very good perspective. I was like the ppo a little over 20 years ago then my eyes opened. Toughen up kid not every one gets a trophy. Go cry to your mama.
I got to read the book by Preib, and I think every cop, judge, ASA, and AUSA should give it a read.
Preib cuts away the police mythology created by Chicago defense lawyers, journalists and academics.
He puts the evidence up front, illuminating for all to see, the truth of police cases once hidden by their personal agendas, and hysterical claims.
Preib's beating them at their game and he's winning, yet there isn't a single bit over coverage on this subject by the media.

It was very interesting and unique to see professors, students, intellectuals and cops all in the same room listening to
your lecture about your book.
I never thought I would see professionals agree with cops, but I guess I believe that because the media paints us with such a broad brush.
