Anita's Political Calculation

  • Getting caught with a small amount of marijuana would result in a fine instead of arrest under a measure the Illinois House approved Thursday.

Low-level cannabis possession would go from a crime with fines of up to $2,500 and up to a year in jail to be more like a traffic ticket: no court time and a fine of up to $125. The measure would apply to people caught with 15 grams or less, the equivalent of about 25 cigarette-size joints.
The street corner dealer is thisclose to being a ticket rather than a CB number.

And why is Anita jumping in with both feet?
  • Alvarez is not leading a charge here. In fact, she's late to the parade. That was the subtext of the curt statement issued by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle: "I am pleased to see that the state's attorney has finally recognized what many of us have been saying for years — that our failed drug policies are resulting in the unnecessary detention and incarceration of thousands of people, primarily young men of color, who are accused of non-violent low-level drug offenses each year."

It's no secret that Preckwinkle wants her chief of staff, Kimberly Foxx, to run against Alvarez next year. Preckwinkle believes Alvarez has been too focused on prosecution rather than alternatives such as ... what Alvarez announced Monday.
There's that black-and-brown thing again. Maybe if black or brown people didn't smoke it on the corners or in their cars no one would care as much? It certainly wouldn't attract the attention it does if you're doing it in your basement or out in your yard or anywhere the police don't have a duty to be. That simple act alone would cut weed arrests by 50% overnight we bet. Carry ID and sign the ticket, you're looking at an even bigger reduction in physical arrests, and that's just an informal survey.

Not surprised to see Anita playing politics though. You can bet the reverends are ramping up for the next primary after the Servin verdict this week.

Pot is not harmless.

It is the gateway drug for too many.

Not every marijuana user mellows out and wants to watch television and eat potato chips. Some people become angry and paranoid. A few become violent.

The marijuana available today is much stronger than in the past.

There is a new study from Dartmouth that suggests that pot usage fouls up many young people. The brain continues to develop until about age 25 and space cadets are risking permanent damage.

Bottom line: Shut up Preckwinkle.

The reverunds will be among the biggest loosers in this whole thing. black market money is what fills the collection plate on Sunday. narcotics is a huge part of the economy in the hood. remove the risk and you remove the profit. Why buy what you can just grow your self in a pot on your windowsill? Guns will become unaffordable for street gangs and turf will be worthless. certainly won't need as many police. Somebody better rethink this.

Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey has been advocating for a rehaul of bonding penalties and procedures, including reductions for simple pot possession, for awhile now.

After Alvarez talked about this, the Trib asked Fritchey about it and if HE was considering a run for Alvarezs' job and his response was that he's considering it. If Alvarez is losing the support of the Dem party, the field could get full quickly.

Arrest for marijuana were usually prompted by some other actions that brought the weed to light. It allowed us to take that element out of the equation until cooler heads prevailed. It allowed us to use discretion and probably saved a lot of lives.

Without that important tool, "sketchy" neighborhoods will only get worse. The victim will always be looking for a reason to explain why he is the victim. The bottom line is that he is lazy because he has been allowed to be that way.

Murders with actual victims (not shithead murders) have been solved because of the old guys who knew to play it cool in the neighborhood with weed. Apparently they stopped teaching the new guys sometime in the 90s and now you get a 4 man team with a dime bag to show for a tour.

My question is how and why are all this pot related offenses getting kicked to the curb. First it's the amount of five grams...then fifteen.....now they want anything less than 29 grams to be just short of a public scolding. Who else has a license to distribute pot. This is the wrong yes the WRONG way to address this gateway drug. The message these politicians are sending is that Cheech and Chongqing should run for public office man. Yeah man.....

well who is gonna make bank on all of this lackadaisical attitude over pot? Only all the political hacks that's who......if medical pot sales was such a good idea why isn't it distributed via CVS and Walgreens like other medicines. Oh yeah the politically connected cannot just open up a walgreens or a cvs and be licensed as such. How disappointed I am in these vultures on our youth. Honestly, they haven't prosecuted misdemeanor marijuana in 20 years. They would never bring a chemist to court.

Instead the SA would ask the defense attorney if he or she would stip to the lab. Any attorney with a pulse would say "no" and the case would be Nolle'd.

Hmmm if you have ever said the above statement you have been indoctrinated.

It is a simple thing a protected class does to people who do not read relevant materials.

kinda like half of all marriages end in divorce.

I know you lied to get on the job and told them you never puffed. Who cares people do stupid things in their youth and will become president etc etc.

Pot is like gay marriage one day you are against the idea next day you are at a gay bachelor party.

I understand your point, and hopefully my rebuttal brings on a healthy dialogue. The dime bag arrest has turned into so much more. What the bosses don't seem to understand, or better yet, what Anita doesn't understand, is who does she/they think we're arresting? We are arresting the juveniles, and the same players that post up on the corners, spend all day on the porch, and are generally walking targets. Believe me, there should be no personal satisfaction from locking someone up for a dime bag of weed, but you're a fool if you don't believe that 90% of those arrested for a "pimpy" dime bag are a potential shooting/homicide victim that you just took off the street for a few hours. You're saving these people from themselves. People aren't talking to police anymore as it is. We aren't clearing any homicides because you let someone walk with their pot, at least not anymore. The dime bag pinch has become more important than they realize.

Dude, relax. No reasonable adult wants kids having access to pot any more than they do alcohol. As a responsible, tax-paying adult, don't steer me toward the more harmful recreational drug (alcohol). Let ME make that choice. The gateway theory has been debunked many times over, sorry. And as for your "stronger" pot theory, you don't see alcoholics running around drinking everclear or grain alcohol, do you? Of course you don't. And finally, very few (if any) become violent after using cannabis. The tide has turned, the american public has spoken, and it will soon be legal.

Bottom line laws are made for the working man, no matter what color. Those that do not possess the work gene will always cry discrimination because they are too fu**ing lazy to get up every morning and earn an honest day’s wages to provide for themselves and their families. They will always look for the shortcut, the scam, easy pickings by procuring something that does not belong to them. Selling dope on the corner and shooting someone who is selling dope on their corner. Reminds me of wild animals on the plains in Africa. Imagine if everyone was required to contribute to society by being gainfully employed. Instead we have uneducated, not willing to work, lazy, getting high and drunk all day every day, Gang banging menaces who are proud of being unproductive members of society and we're paying for their existence from cradle to grave. If you still think voting is not that important but working your ass off to provide for your family is your number one priority then you are sadly mistaken. As more members of society disappear from the work force and turn to the working man’s tax dollars for their primary means of support that means you have to work longer hours so you generate more tax dollars for their support. It will come to a point where you could work 24/7/365 and never generate enough tax revenue to support them. Voting to them is JOB 1, going to the different social welfare agencies to collect their free everything is JOB 2 and smoking weed, getting high on drugs, drinking, making babies with as many baby mommas as possible and selling dope on the corner is JOB 3. We are now financially enslaved to them by our politicians. Taxation without representation is a defining principal this country vowed would never exist. I find it pervasively ironic that those who pay the least amount of taxes get the most representation. This perverse scheme is something that our elected officials have orchestrated. I don’t care if you are a democrat, republican, green or libertarian at least cast your vote every election to remove the incumbent every year. Rant off.

What facts do have to back up this statement?

What corner are the white kids selling reefer on?

How many white gangbangers are in Chicago?

How many white neighborhoods are so out of control, that they have 20 times the normal allotment of patrolmen in them?

How many white neighborhoods have there been talks about sending in the National Guard to patrol them?

How many white neighborhoods are there where it's the norm that pot is like cigarettes and beer is like pop for it's residents?

How many white kids get struck by cars regularly?

How many white schools are two policeman stationed inside them, along with metal detectors, at least 8 security guards, 10-20 safe school guards and at least 3 patrol cars assigned to them at dismissal?

How much of my tax dollars are being spent towards my community, as opposed to ___________ (insert any black neighborhood name here)

How many white neighborhoods have as many beautiful parks with lagoons and enormous field houses located in them?

How many white neighborhoods have city colleges located in them?

How many white neighborhoods have brand new grammar schools and high schools with millions spent on pools and turf football stadiums. (without having anyone swim and not having a football team)

Yes, I also would like to see things be equal.

@ 3:22
5:27 here.

Part of the reason nobody talks anymore is because the dynamic between guys and the neighborhood has turned so toxic that we have guys making 80K a year to arrest 16 year olds for possessing pieces of a fucking plant. Anyone who is still selling this 'reefer madness' bullshit is naive and has no credibility.

Back in the day, the objective was; haul in every single burglar, mugger, robber, rapist, thief, swindler, dealer you can but routine contacts that turn up a baggie, that is a great opportunity to "cast out a line", as we used to say... and brother, you would be amazed at what some of those lines reeled back in.

There is no reasoning with the young bulls and hard-charger types but for those who have been on the job for a while and believe the 6 inches between your ears has a place in modern policework, they know that discretion in circumstances involving chickenshit like weed can pay huge dividends.

In my day, if you were hauling in weed arrests, chances are you would get a nickname with 'Nicklebag' or 'Dimebag' somewhere in it, and it wasn't meant to be flattering.

Jusr legalize the shit. The cartels make 1/2 their money from weed and legalizing it will allow no more to smoke it then now.

If you want to keep a job you'd still have to pass drug tests so the only ones smoking it would be the ones smoking it now.

Of course the county, cities, states, wont be allowed to steal car's, homes, boats, and other property but they shouldnt be doing so anyways. Spend the money on the destructive drugs. Go after Meth, Heeeron, LSD, and all that crapola.

Not sure if the majority here pay much attention to the political statements from a year or so ago by Holder, Preckwinkle, et al.
Because the vast majority of statements here are replying as if this came out of left field.

Your leaders, on the national and civic level, have both stated, multiple times in fact, that this is their war on crime.

Pot and small amounts of felony narcotics arrests are, in their words, "Modern Slavery".

In no way did they hide this agenda to any of us; this was a goal, set in motion years ago, to stop the jailing of what they consider to be petty criminal offenses and the jailing of generations of people of color.

That's how they sold it to the public, or at least that's how the "media" reported it.

They made it perfectly clear.

The next agenda is the repeal of the "Truth in Sentencing Act". When they complete this, and it looks like it's a go in congress, the Fed will be forced to release thousands of high level drug dealers, as well as the low levelers who chose to play along, back into the streets.

Add all of this, together with the media's war on the police, and you have a social disaster waiting in the shadows for all of you.

Good luck out there!

Motherfucker!! I just solved the murder problem in the black community...since all these young blacks are getting pinched for shootings and guns it stands to reason that gun and shooting laws are racist. Stop enforcing those racist laws immediately.

reefer madness, gateway drug... the same tired back and forth.

I grew up in a shit neighborhood full of pot-smoking gangbangers.

The decent families made sure to keep their kids clear away from those losers because they had no respect or regard for anything or anyone.

Not one of those criminals ever "turned their life around."

The picture of benign, harmless, docile pot-smoking slackers is one I saw in movies, not in real life.

Does anyone actually believe there are separate marketplaces (streetcorners) where you go to the friendly neighborhood tie-dye wearing pot seller in sandals, and then over to the hardened drug dealer for all the so-called "more serious" drugs?

The chain of violent activity doesn't suddenly disappear because we de-criminalize or legalize. The cartels and drug dealers don't kill over control of one thing but not the other.

The clueless pot buyer is still fueling the drug trade.

By the way, as far as harmless goes, I don't need to read the latest materials and studies to know that there isn't a single person who would choose a pot-smoking doctor for their next kid's doctor visit or choose a pot-smoking teacher over one who does not do drugs. Same goes for mechanics, bus drivers, and so on...

Alcohol is consumed in your off time. I'm sure the surgeon who operated on my knee has a few drinks from time to time, but I wouldn't care to see any doctor who smokes pot AT ALL. And neither would you.

Come on scc you know(or should) that (most) tact teams use whatever loop hole they can to justify a physical arrest over a ticket because of the #'s game.

4/24/2015 08:13:00 AM

Maybe a long time ago yes, but where you been - the don't care about physical arrests anyone more - only contact cards. Arrests are the least talked about stat at CompStat. Most tact guys don't lock them up because they need a head - most do it because it easier and faster to process the arrest - rather than issue an ANOV, go in a test the stuff, inventory it etc. you can knock out the arrest even quicker. Before CompStat - it was a head a day - now it's a few contacts a day -

A glass of wine or good bourbon, even two or three over the course of an evening can be enjoyed without impairing you. The purpose of marijuana, like harder drugs, is to impair you immediately.

I am concerned about the ability of our youth to navigate this new obstacle to success. The pro marijuana people are worried about making money or getting high. They are unconcerned about the damage to our Country.

The United States is the world's leader and moral compass. We have important obligations. I think this is going to be a huge hurdle to overcome.

As many white kids smoke and sell weed I have never seen one appear in cook county not one. Cullertons kid has 7, 8 DUI offenses all dropped, how many wrigleyville cub fans get arrested for that, hardly any. Enforce the law equally

For those of you who do not agree with this statement, just look up the facts that are published yearly by the US Department of Justice. Marijuana use is pretty equal across the races ( with the exception of Asian). The difference seems to lie around how and where it is used and sold.

That explains the current state of the World, perfectly. Moral Compass, spit out my coffee on that one.

___

What do you think is more damaging to an individual and in turn, places a heavier burden on society. Their deciding go ingest marijuana, or you arresting them for possessing it and jamming them up in the system, fees, fines, court, record, etc?

Sorry. You "drug warrior" types are in need of serious deprogramming therapy. You can keep on with this narrative that the thugs are smoking the devils cabbage and coming to get the children but its bullshit, its fringe, its the sort of thing that only agenda driven types say and frankly speaking, its leaving you on an ignorant fringe with credibility problems. You can't bullshit all the people, all the time.

If you can't find enough work on the job without weed, then the job is better off without you.

I can't wait to read this blog if SCC is successful at removing Alvarez. The sky will have actually fallen if that happens.

Preckwinkle will control the State's Attorney's Office and Preckwinkle HATES the police and all law enforcement in general. Look into how she treated detectives who invested a battery when her own son was the victim. She refused to let the "racist" Chicago Police Department interview her son back when she was an Ald. Think this is made up? Check it out. Anita Alvarez is a dream compared to what you'll get with this Preckwinkle controlled Foxx chick. Get a clue!

Good luck out there!

it is long overdue to reform drug laws to make mere possession of small amounts of pot a non-issue. it clogs up the court system and wastes a lot of LE resources that could be used on more serious crimes.

10+ decades of hassling pot users has not made the situation any better. time to move on.
