No More "Intimidating" Equipment

  • In a surprise announcement coming nine months after police in riot gear dispelled racially charged protests, President Barack Obama is banning the federal government from providing some military-style equipment to local departments and putting stricter controls on other weapons and gear distributed to law enforcement.

The announcement comes after the White House suggested last year that Obama would maintain programs that provide the type of military-style equipment used to respond to demonstrators last summer in Ferguson, Missouri, because of their broader contribution to public safety. But an interagency group found "substantial risk of misusing or overusing" items like tracked armored vehicles, high-powered firearms and camouflage could undermine trust in police.
On one hand, there are entire production lines of "civilian" equivalents for most of the equipment used in a riot situation. On the other, the material available is outdated or redundant for the military and ends up sitting in warehouses collecting dust. Taxpayers ought to be happy it can be "re-purposed" instead of shipped of to some fith-rate third-world military at a later date.

Maybe a happier paint scheme would quiet the critics who view police as "too threatening." Something in pink and yellow we suppose. It would also make the "tactical gear queers" stop thinking that they're like Delta Force and remembering that they're police officers first.

But the fact remains that policing has changed as the threats internally have evolved. ISIS threats are a regular thing now. The Boston bombings were most likely a harbinger of things to come. Lone wolf attacks involving foreign-trained individuals in military-style camps are possible, to say nothing of the intentionally created racial-strife in democrat-controlled urban environments. A "disproportionate response" to these types of threats isn't intimidating - it's obligated to demonstrate an ability to restore order to the rule of law when disorder is the aim of the lawless.

How about an appropriately equipped, rugged enough for urban duty, built for officer safety and survival, police car?

You know...
Rugged like the old Chevys
with that torque monster 350...

7.62 mm resistant panels in the doors,
ballistic film on the windows, mounts
for both carbines and shotguns, are a start.

Expensive?

No... A worthwhile expenditure if the m/fers on
five would curtail their appetite for thievery and
fiscal fuckery.

In my opinion police departments running around in mrap vehicles and swat tesms trying to look like the navy seals is getting pretty rediculous. Never in my 37 years on this job did we ever have any of this stuff or need it. I'm not saying it's completely unnecessary, but it's getting pretty nuts now. Police are police... Not military.

You NEED military hardware in Chicago. This is no easy Theater of War.

Just for Englewood alone, you could use some military equipment.

Tanks maybe too intimidating, but a squadron of A-10s parked at Midway would be enough firepower to quell anything in Englewood.

We could drive those Commie Bastards back to Gary, IN and let them live with 'em.

You need to stop pussying around when it comes to response.

That New Yorker you have in charge of CPD is more politician, than general.

Politicians don't know what it is to give the enemy a good fight. They're too busy giving speeches and kissing babies. McCarthy is no different.

Sometimes a good thunderstorm is all you need to stop crime. The weather does play a part in deterring crime.

30MM rain washes the streets pretty clean.

ISIS is not a threat nor are the other Islamic terrorist groups. Our president, DHS, FBI and pentagon have assured us of that. According to DHS a greater threat are homegrown terrorists such as outlaw bikers, gun nuts, veterans, religious nuts, KKK and various racist groups. The feds have these groups under surveillance and can take care of them. The problem is that local police are using weaponry against minorities, not the real trouble makers.

Why arent police officers voting republican 90 percent of the time?

The democrats want to strip of us protection and would prefer us out there unarmed hugging the criminals.

They (democrats) push to have to have criminals (including cop killers) pardoned / released early/ rewarded with settlements.

They jeopardize our pensions with reckless spending. Did you see the federal govt is bringing in record tax collections? Live within your means!

Sorry, SCC - I love you guys 99% of the time, but I gotta call bullshit on this one. The example you use about the Boston Bombers proves the counterpoint: The jackboots in Boston, that put the whole city on lockdown, pointed loaded "assault" rifles at private citizens, and conducted warrant-less searches of homes (pulling entire families out at gunpoint) while grasping at straws to catch TWO ... *TWO* ... jihad douchebags - that shows the average "warrior" cop should have no business with big boy toys.

We'd all be better off if LEO's across the country took the beat cop or the Texas Ranger models, not the high-speed low drag "operator" model.

Read some Bill Lind on 4GW ... heavy handed tactics help fuel the crisis of the state's legitimacy, and lead to bad things. Better to keep the moral high ground and lose a few brothers in blue than to "tac out" and set off a war against cops ...

[disclaimer: you should roll w/ 500 pounders and arty on ghetto neighborhoods like Fergadishu, Baltimore ...]

Another result of Obama and his ideas to destroy America! This is treasonous behavior, we have to protect our country, our citizens what is law for if you're ordered to not enforce it? Look at Baltimore how can a so called mayor let business get destroyed and order police to do nothing, yet she's not indicted? The president lets and allowed illegals across borders open arms, how many are terrorists or potential terrorists, how many are bringing disease here some that we eradicated years ago?

Go back and read the posting during the Boston overreach - we decried that method of policing roundly. It was shocking how much the citizens allowed in terms of Civil Rights violations, but it was Boston, Massachusetts - liberal la-la land - so we weren't actually surprised.

We're speaking in general terms of regaining control of the streets in the event of widespread disorder so that regular city services and the general populace can advance with their daily routines. Perhaps it could have been clearer.

The only reason that the socialist ObaMAO administration did this is because they know that the police would be an obstacle for them when they try to destroy the Constitution and turn this country into a socialist dictatorship.

Cops don't like them and see firsthand how corrupt and dangerous they are. They took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. They would keep that oath for the most part. The lapdogs will fall in line, but the rank and file will defend America.

Just got back from Tennessee, went through cool springs, and Franklin area, drove passed police facilities talked to some coppers their lots are surrounded by wrought iron, and iron rolling gates you need key card to enter copper personal vehicles are inside gated secured area which has cameras monitored 24/7 state of the art systems not the junk we have!

Look at our vehicles, where are the promised new vehicles dean and the faker crew agreed to! Cars with paint peeling off, wires hanging everywhere, total death traps!

Now Obama doesn't want police to look militarized? Thought we were semi military organization! Guess we should have semi military equipment does the military have equipment that is totally non-functional? So much junk, the best is fleet take a vehicle there mechanics lol nope maybe part changers if that! Bring vehicle in for service how many times you get it back with something else wrong? Clout not experience!

The MRAPs should be warehoused for the next time the .mil has to deal with mines and IEDs. They've only been in use since the US civil war, and we still went into OIF/OEF with our dicks in our hands and soft skin vehicles. That was criminal and the taxpayer got fleeced with this "emergency" purchase. Why was it an emergency? Who got fired for that fuckup? MRAPs are not right for policing, get a Bearcat if you need a hard vehicle.

Full auto isn't for policing either, ever. There's too many misses as it is.

Police don't need all this gear. The problem isn't gear. Such as it is, they're right; looking like a pudgier, older version of some hard eyed killer oppressing the natives isn't what policing is. If you're looking to "pacify" the hood, things aren't going to work out well, for anyone.

This is all distraction and obfuscation. The police are handling their job fine, all things considered. The God damned courts, judges and attorneys are the point of failure here!!! You can't bail out the boat when the other people are pouring the water right back in! These neighborhoods would clean up fine if the habitual criminals were kept in prison(or executed, even better)

"A "disproportionate response" to these types of threats isn't intimidating - it's obligated to demonstrate an ability to restore order to the rule of law when disorder is the aim of the lawless."

Technology has improved/gotten worse (depending on whether or not the tech is in your hands or pointed at you.)

Nothing wrong with having good protective gear, nothing wrong with having sturdy vehicles to roll it out in. Sure, coppers are not the Army, but coppers are the first ones on the line when something blows. NYPD Emergency Services is a good model, I think. Have the tools to deal with many everyday situations quick, before they get worse.

Saw a photo of a sheriff's deputy down in Waco called out on that biker thing, had SWAT greens on and what I think was a 5.56 bullpup weapon -- to us older steel-and-walnut M1 Garand guys, it didn't even look like a gun. I was squinting at it, WTF...polymer and stampings and weldments BUT IT WORKS. Small enough to deploy while seated in car, coming up stairwell, etc.

Can't argue with success, I guess.

Of course, a friend in New York State tells me about how her city didn't burn in 1968 because squads were rolling along with plain old 12 ga. pump guns sticking out the windows, making "significant eye contact" with all and sundry...

Success again.

Problem isn't police gear. Problem is a population about twice the size that it was when I was born, with unrealistic expectations shoved in front of it in a deteriorating economy as it's goaded with sharp sticks by various agitators. Everyone going to star in rap videos. Everyone else going to "get all the cash you'll ever need -- FREE! -- by flipping houses." At least that snake-oil wagon seems to have left town to fleece the rubes somewhere else. Had to turn off the news radio, couldn't take those mouth-full-of-s__t ads anymore. "I is flip six hundred houses RIGHT UNDER YOU NOSE!" Pre-2008-bubble-implosion real-estate redux, with the "disadvantaged" in brand-new clothes with price tags still on, shooting each other on "party buses" right on Chicago's fabled lakefront.

Shhh. Don't scare the tourists. Understand that tiny Natasha McShane is almost able to make herself a cup of tea again, five or six years after her visit here.

...and Susana Mendoza hands $1000 of her own money to the likes of Herbie Pulgar.

Priorities.
