U04-01 Updated

This is the way their minds work:

Makes perfect sense. The Tribune even wrote about it:
  • Chicago police officers will be required to cover their tattoos while working, according to a new directive issued Monday.

"Tattoos and body brandings will not be visible while on duty or representing the Department, whether in uniform, conservative business attire, or casual dress," the memo states.

Hands, face, neck and other areas not covered by clothing have to be covered with "matching skin tone adhesive bandage or tattoo cover up tape." The order is effective Friday.
No sticking caps, no baseball caps. Crown cap with everything, all year round - no hatless summertime.

The turtleneck and mock turtleneck survive as a winter option.

No tats - hello long sleeves and ties. All summer.

OK, I maybe be just a simple country lawyer but how can they enforce this? I understand that the Dept can regulate our appearance but, If someone was hired with tattoos and it was OK how can they say now its not OK? And if they have to cover their tattoos would not the dept have to issue whatever clothing is necessary to cover said tattoos? I get trying to be professional but changing the rules flies in face of past practices which courts have considered in the past. Full disclosure, I do not have or ever will get tattoos.

Jesus H. Christ...I served this country proudly and I cant even have a tattoo on my arm now? When I accepted this job over a decade ago there were several conditions of employment. 1) be a resident of the city (which rahm wasn't when he ran for mayor) 2) have a valid D.L. 3) pass the state test...now after a decade with exposed tatts I have to cover them up? I just want to say Thank you Rahm and Gary because in 24 months you won't have me to kick around anymore (or my taxes). I know the FLOP won't help us , maybe some police friendly lawyer can help us fight this bullshit. It's bad enough that residency is illegal everywhere else but the most corrupt city in America!

Now do an order on hair cuts and styles. Female hair in a bun and corn rolls, unless you are groowing corn is gone. Beards have to go. No exception, cannot shave, tuff shit. Use hair remover. No green or yellow colors.
Next should be the cargo pants. Tac needs to be in a blue polo and tan pants and regular shoes.
CPD supervisors are at fault for letting this shit get out of hand. Start sparring ungroomed members. Send people home without pay. The message will travel fast.
Department should go with long sleeve shirts, light weight with tie during summer. Start looking the part of professionals.

Who cares, I will stay in my car with the AC as long as possible. Just look at what's going on around us, traffic stop leads to police shooting after foot pursuit. Officer charged with murder. Girl resists arrest at a pool party, Officer fired. So society says it's ok to resist arrest and when the police stop you it's ok to just run away. Instead of a no tatt's policy, how about a no foot pursuit policy and a new use of force policy that allows us to disengage when met with resistance. That might save some of our jobs and let the world know how warm and fuzzy the CPD are. Maybe then, Obama will fix our pensions like he bailed out the banks and auto industry.

Yes. You're free to express yourself. Let me know how that's working for you when it's 100 degrees outside and you're in your comfy long-sleeve shirt and tie. Dumbass. No visible tattoos was long overdue. It looks completely unprofessional how p.o.'s in this department walk around looking like bikers and gangbangers. And a lot of these tattoo covered coppers didn't come on the job looking like tatted thugs, they got them afterwards. The knit cap looks ridiculous too! I blame that on whomever manufactures the knit hat because coppers look like they are walking around with a condom on their heads.....a better design (such as a Northface skull cap) would have been better. Either way, I know some will complain that appearance shouldn't matter with the crime rate in Chicago, but in law enforcement in really does. Every other big city or small town I've ever visited, the police look like the police. Officers in this department have really been looking sloppy the past decade or so, and things need to be cleaned up a bit. Now hopefully the department cracks down on these stupid beards, cornrows, earrings, long hair, and everything else which is already in the G.O.

Oh they will step on a few unclouted and make an example of them but the fucking horse is out the barn.

For years the Dept. had a policy of allowing recruits to cheat by telling the instructors to leave the room during tests, "yaknow, to build a better all inclusive world", and all of a sudden they are worried about Tats? These "progressives" ran down the great institutions of this country, taught its children to spit on the police, sicc'ed its media mutts on us to make us look bad at every corner. And now they are worried about Tats?

CPD has officers at fault. But how many of the fools bashing us would take the heat for some idiotic thing their co-worker does? Why does that suddenly change when you put on cheap polyester and a tin star? I cant stop any adult from getting a fucking Tat just like I cant stop them from sticking a shiv in their life partner. My kids over 21 and I couldnt stop him from getting one of these stupid fucking things.

In the few months I have left I am going to make a point of something. Each and every time some citizen looks at me like Im shit, or each and every time I find myself disliking the job and the clowns running the show, Im going to say or do something nice for a co-worker. I try and be a good guy anyways but on the way out Im going to make a point of it. I know they are good people, fucking Tats and all, and I refuse to be another Lemming brunning off the cliff so the city can brand us and get public support for fucking us on our retirements.

So many comments above reaching the false conclusion that this order has anything to do about the violence or that all other problems have been solved. Comments like that always struck me as idiotic. The problem this order addresses is that for the last decade or two the appearance of officers in uniform has gotten very bad.

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone asked me "Is that all you got to worry about?"

My reply was usually along the lines of "No, I have more things to worry about but one thing at a time. Now is the time for this issue with you." Usually shut them up.

I actually agree with this, but there should be an exemption for military tattoos for those who served. Far too many of us look like slobs. In other large cities like Boston, Atlanta, New York City etc., the police have uniform standards that are followed. Your appearance should command respect.

I'm glad that all you assholes seem to think that this order will bring me down.
I don't leave the car!
I'll be nice and cool in the air conditioning all summer long.

As for pride in the uniform; I haven't had that in well over 5 years.
The job sucks, the bosses are a bunch of know nothings, and most of the coppers are crybaby goofs.
Why would anyone take pride in this?

I'm counting the days until I can leave this city and this job.
This is why we deserve to be fucked. No solidarity.
It's a sad state that I have to back up guys that are happy to see the department fuck me over with a uniform standard that wasn't in place when I got on.

This department is filled with sad, pathetic members that take joy in seeing other guys unhappy.
Why would anyone take pride in this job?
I would much rather hang out with my fellow tattooed "lowlifes" than most of the cops I'm forced to work with.
I'll take the guys with tattoos any day.

So having a military inspired sleeve on my arm to show pride for the fact I spent 10 years in the Army makes me look like a thug and a slob. That's what I'm getting from most of the negative comments. I'm sure it's from the same people that still wear their duty belt from 20 years ago, which is brown in color by now, and sags half way down your ass with the big ass revolver hanging down almost on your thigh and not a belt keeper in sight. That is accompanied by a vest which is way too small and certainly cannot be velcroed any more since it's always undone and rides up like you're wearing a sports bra. There are plenty of people that look like asshole regardless of when they came on the job. Tattoos don't make me look like a slob. A dirty, nasty, unkept, old and worn uniform and a lack of self pride and self respect does. Hoooaaahhh!!!!

As far as the hats go--I want to be able to recognize a cop when I see one. It's getting more difficult. I can't keep up with all the new looks. The traditional hats help, though they're not the only thing. Can we at least see more checkerboards? (Why do I want to recognize a cop? So I can relax, of course, knowing that I'm safe from harm for the moment.)

As for the tattoos...shoulda thought of that when you decided to cover yourself all over with them. Maybe make exception for armed forces emblems.

Relax, there just tattoos.

How about looking like a PROFESSIONAL while you're at work?? Wear that baseball hat correctly on your head, stop getting tatts that make you look like a fu@king gang banger and be proud of the uniform. All those coppers with sleeves brought this on themselves. Yes. You're free to express yourself. Let me know how that's working for you when it's 100 degrees outside and you're in your comfy long-sleeve shirt and tie. Dumbass. I hope every inspector and every boss SPAR's the shit out of you if you don't comply.

I agree with you on the baseball cap thing. I have no tattoos but I really dont think there is a problem with guys or gals that have tattoos as long as its not gang related and does not reflect the department in a negative way. Alot more people nowadays get tattoos. As far as hoping coppers get sparred. Wow that's a little over the edge. No wonder blue shirts dont stick together anymore.

CALEA=commission for accreditation of law enforcement agencies. This is one hell of a bamboozled group that examines whether dept.'s are using "best practices & policies." Its selling point was to reduce insurance policies for towns that were not self-insured unlike CPD. Although the way the city's finances are plummeting-maybe we will need an outside company to insure Chgo. The only benefit from CALEA is that retired bosses can get hired to review/inspect other dept.'s. Maybe McStreetlight is planning his next career move....???
After almost 20 years-some dept.'s are dropping CALEA once the insurance companies stopped the reduced premiums since a "study" showed that the CALEA standards did not reduce claims against dept.'s. The anti-CALEA mantra in these towns is "Kill a tree for CALEA" due to all the paperwork involved. Ask a PO from towns like Skokie, Oak Lawn, Oak Park, Highland Park and you'll get an earful. Skokie actually dropped the whole process.
So as other PD's leave CALEA-CPD IS NOW JOINING IT? Just wait when the outside "examiners" arrive to review us!!!

This new generation with the "guess what my tattoo means" mentality are out of control. You want your body covered in Tattoos, you want every inch of your body pierced have fun but don't be surprised when you can't find a job or your job tells you too cover up. It's unprofessional. Try to file a discrimination suit, what's your religious affiliation that requires your tattoo too be visible? The department is denying your right to have a tattoo, the department is not refusing to hire you if you have one.

BTW buy a shirt that actually fits, because it appears that most of you are only interested in showing off your bulging tattooed biceps in a shirt that is two sizes too small

Why do you need to work in Blue Jeans, wear some dumb baseball cap, and have a beard? Larry the Cable Guy looks more like a real Cop than you do, you just look goofy to the public. More Uniforms give the appearance of more Police. Clean Cut Cops in Uniform give the appearance of a professional Law Enforcement Agency. Get with it CPD. And while you are at it, keep your Officers inside the City Limits where they belong, not out dining at suburban locations. Plenty of places to eat everywhere in Chicago City Limits.

The department can do as they wish. Just as hirings of years ago, the only education needed was a HS diploma or equivalent. This was the same for promotions. Many coppers were hired and promoted. Then the city decided to change things. They offered tuition reimbursement, which many ignored. Still @ hiring no-one needed any type of degree. City did not honor or grandfather it in, they simply changed the rules, now education is a must. Now hats and tattoos, they will do as they wish. They are the employer and we are employees. Luckily I'm in my 29th year and am not bothered by this, but honestly, even if I were in recruit status this would not bother or effect me. I will not let these trivial things jeopardize my job and the well being of my family. The "look at me" generation needs a wake up call. I't's not YOU out there it's WE and US!

Great for Carnival Workers, prison inmates, Outlaw Bikers, STD carrying strippers, Trailer Trash Rednecks, Make-Believe Toughguys, not the Police. Cover up those cartoons, nobody thinks you are cool and nobody wants to look at them. Tattoos are so 1990's anyways, old and out of style. Just silly looking nowadays. Look for all of you out spoken tattoo haters, go fuck yourselves. Yes, there are some bad tattoos and yes I am all for covering them up, but you can keep your opinion of style to yourself. I like tattoos, but I will not argue one bit with covering them up while working. As for those that thought it was a great idea to tattoo their hands, neck, face, head, etc., well shame on them because that is not a good idea. A tattoo is not the end of the world anymore, and more people have them than anyone would like to realize or admit.

Now if you want to talk about truly unprofessional or down right sloppy, it would be uniform issues. It is not impossible to remove a ballistic vest and WASH THE DAMN cover!! Those months or years of food and dirt need a good cleaning every so often. The baseball hat was a great bit of progress (should have been a better hat) as it provided a good practical piece of uniform head wear. However if you never replace that first one you bought and continue to wear some nasty gray salty hat or flip it around backwards, you have now done us all an injustice. The same applies to the knit cap, could have been a better hat, but very practical on a cold winter day. However I have seen people as recent as last week still wearing the damn things, it isn't that cold out. Shirts with patches hanging off, pants with holes, worn out shoes, dreadlocks, pony tails male/female, beards, goatees, earrings, blue tooth, finger nails, etc., are far worse for actual appearance issues.

Now if you want to talk about something that is ACTUALLY an officer safety issue, how about holsters?? All these lightweight warriors with off duty pancake type holster that are not safe in the least bit. The Blackhawk CQC holster is not a duty rated holster and has proven to break under minimal stress. A leather pancake provides zero security. This is a HUGE safety issue for the officer and everyone around them. Man the fuck up and wear a gun belt with a DUTY RATED holster. A couple extra magazines wouldn't hurt either if you can manage to be an adult and carry a little weight.

Anyone with a belly hanging over their belt may as well keep their mouth shut about tattoos or any other uniform issues. Physical presence is the best thing you can bring to the table while working, I will much rather have a fit guy with tattoos over a fat fuck in a crown hat.

End of the day this is all stupid shit to start the summer with after several weeks of bullet wound counts in double digits.

Let's see McCarthy finally do the right thing and issue a "Comply

regarding grooming standards...

No dreads to the floor, clean shaven/new issue bump cards
-near mustache is allowed, natural hair colors only, no make-up,
short/neatly trimmed fingernails etc...

Get rid of the black "gym shoes" too.
Everybody should be in leather boondocker
type boots that require some Kiwi or Lincoln
and some practiced buffing and brushing.

Keep the cargo pants...
They COULD be made of much better material
and a reinforced diamond crotch gusset for comfort and
durability.

The body armor under the shirt thing IS hard
to get with... We can co-sign everything else but that.

Summer of '95...
In.

We reckon McCarthy never had sopping wet leather
boots from trooping up and down the stairs of those
monstrosities all night trying to put out "fires."

Your also probly the same 300 pound officer who can't get out of the patrol car without teetering back and fourth. You wanna make uniform standards strict get rid of the fat fucks that weren't hired that way. They were hired with a standard and that flew out the window. I Was hired with the tattoos I have . I haven't gotten a single one since then so if you wanna tell me I can't get any new visible tattoos by all means I won't because that's the new rule . But you knew before I was hired I had them. I applied to departments without tattoo regulations for this reason. How do our patrol cars look professional when half of the old pieces of shit are all rusted up? There are a lot of other things he department can worry about other then tattoos . If the leaders in the department actually gave a fuck and started correcting people on their appearance before, this shit got out of hand.

What happens when one loses the crown cap and hat shield?

As a civilian, I liked the baseball cap and stocking hat. I mean, it said CPD on it. But then again, I saw a number of "tactical frat bros" with baseball caps on backwards.

Not a fan of officers with visible tattoos and am glad they're cracking down on this. If you've been in the service, then you know about the grooming standard. It's no different from this. The police need to look like the police. I saw some clown with a Harley Davidson pin on their epaluet mic loop. C'mon.

Wow....what is Sergeant SC from 005 going to do. She will have to cover up that georgious artwork all over her body. No one will look at her anymore....

When will we be issued the bright red Clown noses to wear? That should really help decrease the body count.

And what of outlandish hairstyles? Corn-rows, braids, razor cuts, etc....? Funky finger nails and lavish jewelry?

The crown hat offends me because it looks like the ones worn by Hitler's SS. And my tats have crosses and six point stars mixed in them for my religious beliefs. Try and make me wear it or cover them, I dare you!

I'm going to wear the ball cap. Inspectors can write up, I really don't give a shit anymore. So I eventually take a take day, again I really don't care.

To those screaming about lawsuits over this and how this change is bullshit, I say relax tough guy. The department, YOUR EMPLOYER, can change shit. Seen a lot of changes in my career. When I came on there were 6 Areas, 25 districts, and we rotated onto all three watches every 28 days. I bet those bitching now we're not when we went from a six day work week to a four day week. Can't be selective with your outrage.

Are you a suck ass from fort fellatio or just a clueless tool?

Us old timer' knew shit with hit if the shoes had a blemish on them.

6/09/2015 02:39:00 AM

It's cornrows not rolls. Women should be allowed to wear them. I grew up with sisters and now I have daughters. If you knew how long it took for their hair to be presentable you would understand why they wear cornrows. I watched my mom do my sisters hair and my wife do my daughters' hair...it takes a long time for some regular, age appropriate styles. It's for durability and longevity, not because they actually like cornrows. As far as the shaving..."no exception"...you clearly haven't had shaving bumps etc. I never had a problem with it but when my face got jacked up I'd skip a day or so. My buddy in the Army, his face blew up like a cauliflower. It was horrible and apparently it is irritable and sometimes painful. The military knows how to deal with it without saying no exception.

TO: Sergeants become the uniform checking police.....

Sorry they should have been all along as well as the Lieutenants, but like the society you like to bitch about so much they are too busy trying to be cool and everybody's friend instead of a supervisor. Enforce the standards just be fair.

I love all the ass clowns on here saying ,"good, go get heat stroke you tattooed pieces of shit..." I served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and first hand watched my brothers be murdered. My arm is my memorial to them. And now all you assholes say I should get heat stroke for that because a memorial is thuggish? Go fuck yourselves and do the department a favor and retire you crusty old fucks. Oh wait, the 3 divorces, 2 new cars, and the living outside of your means is keeping you here so the rest of us "thugs" have to suffer with the likes of you sucking the money teat dry. End rant.

6/09/2015 05:43:00 AM

Friend, as you follow the rule of law you are covered. If a traffic stop leads to a s police involved shooting then was the use of force justified? If yes then the officer has nothing to worry about. Now about the Texas officer man handling a teenage girl in a bikini. His use of force was not justified and he was the only officer on scene getting worked up over nothing. All of the other officers were dispersing the crowd, interviewing various subjects and verbally directing them to leave.

Is hair gel still allowed? How about beards? Sounds like a return to the good ole days, I wouldn't be surprised to see the return of the Dodge Monaco without air as the official squad car, you remember 4-40 air (four windows down traveling at 40 mph).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AHH…the "good ole days"…those days when coppers would stop you 20 dollars over the speed limit…or it was customary to bring in your tow driver buddy at accidents and get a "saw buck" in return. You mean the days when you can escape for hours without being tracked by GPS and you were writing imaginary shit on humpers.
Give me a fucking break, those days are long fucking gone…and yes…its been replaced by more idiotic shit like the "selfie" police. It's harder these days to be a police officer due to all the hatred that the media, ignorant shit bags with smart-phones, and spineless politicians. However, going back to the way things were is supposed to help

Let's be realistic, crime happened then and it's happening now..the only thing that is the same is no-one in the brass level of the department has any answers to deal with it. Hence, no -one in the patrol level will give a shit. Keep you fucking "good ole days."

"The inspector came to roll call yesterday and said the the "bump card" will be need to be renewed every 3 months instead of the current "lifetime" time frame. The department doesn't like having unshaved officers."

Good luck with that. Clearly states "Good for Life" right on my card. Not sure why some of you guys get all worked up over beards?! jealousy I suppose.

So many malicious things to say about the tattooed Officers on this department. So, tattooed Officers, how many of you have had other coppers express this opinion to you in person? I'm guessing not many.

Maybe you have not been to my small department. Our uniform is a joke. CPD does not have a bad uniform (though the gym shoes probably was not a good idea). The problem with your uniforms is people wear them like crap and enforcement seems to be lacking. As much as everyone talks about ISP, it is not their color scheme or their uniform items that are so impressive. It is how they wear the uniform.

The knitted cap is not bad. You know how many departments wear black caps (no matter what color their shirts/pants are) that say "POLICE" in white? It's the same with the ball cap. The purpose of these items is weather and temperature related. If someone isn't wearing it correctly, make them take it off. I'm at a department where we cannot wear ball caps and if you must wear a cap it is the crown cap, knitted or elmer fudd. I stood in the sun recently eyeballing a doorway and windows for a mental that told us he wanted to kill himself. Thankfully I was only out there for about 20 mins but I got kind of pissed thinking how a cap would've kept the sun out my eyes while I'm eyeing a door and several windows...but they don't like how it looks?!?!? There is a reason the military MAKES service members wear hats.
