More RiotFest Discoveries!

  • When Riot Fest moves its music carnival to Douglas Park, revelers attending the three-day music festival might come face-to-face with the neighborhood’s harsh reality.

There’s no easy way to say it.

Douglas Park is home to and surrounded by open-air drug markets — where dealers sell white heroin, weed, cocaine, crack and occasionally PCP, and defend their turf with guns — that terrorize the neighborhood, police statistics show.
Actually, that seemed like a pretty easy way to say it. The link includes a helpful map showing the concentration of crimes in both Humboldt and Douglas Parks. Not an eye-opener to any cop with a few years on, but certainly to the reporter writing about it.

Part of this will be very attractive to a certain portion of the festival-goers. And the sudden influx of naive urban and suburban attendees will be a boon of sorts to another portion of the neighborhood. All in all, it will be an interesting event.

ha! They forgot the Mexican independence fiasco that is coincides in that district that weekend. Guess nobody will be allowed to be off that weekend either since there aren't enough officers to man the cars even if nobody was allowed to be on furloughs either. I hear Okneel is going to start limiting medical days and restricting completely during certain periods of time the rest of the year.

The thing is, SCC, most people will be taking the Pink Line there. The south end of the Park is where the event will be concentrated. The Pink Line is just under the viaduct. Where the concert goers don't want to go is the north or the west. Then again, there is the Roosevelt bus that people will be taking, safely in numbers.

You really have to give it to Alderman Maldonado for being the racist scum that he is. He wasn't even born in Chicago, but on his beloved Isle of PR. He merely came here in the early-80s to attend Loyola, and once he got a taste of just how good his knuckle-dragging welfare brethren had it, he couldn't leave.

Ironically, the 606 grand-opening is today. Last night there was a Gala. It was attended by throngs of White People (cha-ching). The dirt-ball is still losing out to gentrification, whether he likes it or not. And I am sure that many of the white people who start voting in his ward will remember his bigotry in the next couple of elections, and his days will be numbered.

It's the same thing going on in Pilsen, though Solis has actually been welcoming to Whitey. All of these whining Mexicans and Puerto Ricans need to realize that neighborhoods change, and they weren't the original settlers who built these beautiful buildings. If they had, they would be adobe huts that the "rich" white man would be bulldozing. And now, you can start to look for some nice buildings near Douglas Park. The "rich" white kids, though small in number, are already renting in the area.

Maybe Rahm does have this whole thing figured out? Nah, I don't really mean that. But I think Whitey is here to stay in the City Center. Richie has been laying the groundwork for years.

Keep digging media. Wasn't Douglas Park the place where the swimming venue for Daley's olympics was to be built?
Wasn't much of the surrounding property bought up by friends and family of the clouted class once this information came out?
I know this event only lasts a few days but will DP become the new "go to" place for city festivals in order to help the clouted ones see a return on their investment?

My g-d what's become of this city. I'm not speaking from experience, but having been around awile I've heard it said that it was pretty safe for suburban white kids to be around Cabrini back in the day, because they were almost always there to buy dope and people in the hood who might otherwise welcome them to the community by robbing or shooting them were kept in check by the gangs that protected their customers. It was said a suburban kid wandering the slum was safer then a resident of the neighborhood. Sarc/off

Oh-oh. McJersey isn't gonna like this. Some *intrepid journalist* (snicker) got off their ass and found that 'overall crime is up.' (snicker). And not exactly by a 'little bit', already UP 12%, and the year's not even half over.

Maybe that's why no one -- i.e.: useless merit promoted white shirt from the 10th District or from 'Downtown' (35th Street), will talk to the press: ...........
---- a) They're pissed that the beans have been spilled on the actual amount of crime and violence Chicagoans actually have to face each day, so they're boycotting the press/media.
---- b) They fled the country, and are in hiding someplace in Botswana so they don't have to face the wrath of McNewlywed.
or..........
---- c) They're still at home recovering from the Fifty Lashes they got from McSuperCop at the CompStat Meeting that these higher stats came out.

Personally I think it's 'C'. I know I'd hate to get McStreetlightAssassin mad when he's been drinking or has a 'hangover from hell'.

Hey there is plenty of white kids from the burbs around there already. They come walking like scattered zombies from the blue and green line to stroll the area. Sure they get robbed and raped occasionally but they do make it back the next day for more. They're in the abandoned bldgs as well in packs. You can also find them in cars all around the district taking naps before they're journey back to Naperville. Anyone ever hear of a "pass out"? Dope dealers spread the word to promote a dope spot. Usually at night and the event is over in minutes and the scum throw hand loads of baggies to the city's finest junkies. You think they won't be "promoting" all around this event?? Guess again. Ask those white kids walking through the west side or the army of them sleeping on whacker and begging on Michigan how trying that shot led to selling they're soul for dope. I guarantee you this event will breed some new faces coming back on down to the wonderful west side. What a mess

Yeah, get the matching sets of new "anti-violence" T-shirts and ball caps to attract a good crowd of adult juveniles who like nothing better than to march around, chant, and sing. Noise and bright colors attract them, as does a Happy Meal afterwards. Get the bullhorns, go out and mess up the tip, go in the street with your cameraphones and start videoing drivers. "Is you here to purchase narcotics, Sir?"

Why not?

7:34am rahm didn't stick it to no one concerning the " beach" in humboldt park. The community spoke and they figured the $900,000.00 to keep it open for 89 days wasn't worth it and the money should be spent on other parts of the park. There was a small coalition of the new urban pioneers and some old community activists who tried a late rally to keep it open, they failed. As for the riot fest, good riddance. If a certain group wants this riot fest, so bad, then request to have it at Gompers park or forest glen woods, thats if Douglas park doesn't work out. Let's see how that would play out for the local residents near those parks. As for the Puerto Rican festival, hope it finds a life somewhere else too. Neighborhood parks should be used by individuals and their families. Musical venues should be at locations already made for it, like the metal monstrosity at millinuem park, petrillo band shell or even soldier field.

Imma be honest here--I'm a former rock-and-roll victim who has attended Riot for the past 2 years. And while I've seen a whole lotta pot smoking and beer drinking, I certainly haven't seen the teen girls passed out that you get at Lolla. So as festivals go, I think it's a pretty tame bunch (Disclaimer: I am to old to appreciate Blink-182 and left before their set the year the ambo had to be called). I can't imagine the damage to the grass was any greater than that done to Grant Park the years it rained at Lolla, nor am I privy to any damage that remains (although I don't see any as I drive past).

Am I bummed Riot was forced to move? Yes. But I'm also underwhelmed by the lineup.

I will not be attending this year. Frankly, it would take a performance by Kurt Cobain himself (insert heroin joke here) to drag me down to Douglas Park. Because I know it is everything you say it is. And I don't want to rely on safety in numbers, because a mass of people, like a herd of horses, can be easily spooked.

Some of my colleagues think I exaggerate when I tell them exactly how shitteriffic that area is. I'm not. They plan to ride their bikes down Ogden.

I don't even love driving my car down there.

So I will sit this one out, attend Pitchfork or Hideout block party, and hope that nothing bad happens to any of my friends who venture down that way.
