Officers Injured (UPDATE)

  • Chicago police officers were injured in a crash in the South Austin neighborhood Tuesday night, according to a police spokesman.

The officers were involved in a crash near Washington Boulevard and Lavergne Avenue about 8:15 p.m., said [...] a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
An unconfirmed report said the officer(s) had to be cut out of the vehicle, but injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening. Best wishes to the injured.

UPDATE: Post moved from 03 June to 05 June with updated info

Life altering injuries to say the least:
  • All three officers remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon. One suffered a cardiac contusion, blunt head trauma and a pelvis fracture. He also suffered amnesia because of a traumatic brain injury and needs further testing, prosecutors said.

Another officer suffered a dislocated shoulder and lacerations to the face. He was discharged from Mount Sinai Hospital on Thursday but moved to Rush University Medical Center for shoulder surgery, prosecutors said.

The third officer was unconscious after the wreck and had to be extricated from the car. He suffered a lung contusion, a broken neck and a fractured spinal stem, prosecutors said. He suffered six fractured ribs and a laceration to his spleen, which may require surgery.
And the juvenile driver was high as a kite. He's being charged as an adult at least.

Again, the news likes to throw the non-life threatening line when a couple of these guys are seriously messed up. Their car wasn't even moving so you can imagine how fast the misguided youths were traveling to create that kind of damage.

I don't know where you are getting non life threatening.. Two officers are banged up bad but will live, the third officer is not doing well at all and has not gained conscience yet as of this post.

The vehicle was very damaged and the officer were able to be pulled out without being cut out. Happy to hear these officer only had a broken bones. It could have been a lot worse then that.
Get well soon and be safe out there

Thank God they are not injured severely. I am willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that these guys were wearing their seat belts. Always wear your seat belt. In my experience I still find 25% of the time officers don't wear their seat belt. That is one stupid mistake. The consequence can mean death or serious head/brain injury that can impact you for the rest of your whole life.

I'm hearing two are critical. Life-altering injuries might not be life-ending, but they're devastating to the ones in the hospital bed, as well as their families, their careers, their income and their futures.

All three of the officers have serious injuries that are going to be life altering and will take months to years of returning to the job if they ever will return because of the injuries. So little less focus on what happened and maybe a little more focus on helping them and their families out with anything they need because of the strain this is causing to them

My prayers are with the officers and their families. To the other parties involved, All I can hope for is that you suffer the same fate someday, somehow. I believe in an eye for an eye, but because this is Cook Co., I'm sure the little waste of a human being that was driving will be given a slap on the wrist when what's truly deserved is a lifetime of caring for disabled people without compensation.

We need to set up a benefit for these officers. Is their home district raising funds? If yes let us know via the AMFN fax message to all districts and units. If not please get to it. Then each unit and district can raise funds and then send it to the home districts. We need to start moving on this. All three officer's families will face financial difficulties. Also at certain times health insurance can be a joke. You would be surprised the games health insurance companies play- oh this is covered but this is not, this test is covered but they billed us wrong so you have to pay now, etc. Trust me, I have been through that nonsense.

The most important issue here is that the teen driver was not beaten or abused by the Evil Police. Cop should expect to occasionally be in traffic crashes and that is part of the Job. The well being of "The Children" is the issue and "Chicago Values" is what matters. So suck it up, you are overpaid for the little work that you do. Since there is nobody to sue in this case the System cares little about these matters. Just another day at the office, just like everybody else's job. I guess thee cops won't be able to work their second and third jobs to pay Catholic School tuition; think the Church will let them go on that tuition?"G"

Uh...maybe not, brother. The disabled don't deserve Rashaad Paris. Would you want him "taking care of" your mom or dad? Going through the dresser drawers looking for cash and pain meds, more like...

Lifetime of cleaning toilets at Menard, maybe...

"Officers...gave chase, spotted the Impala's back door opening, and saw one of the passengers stick their head out of the car and begin crying for help and trying to get out of the car..."

Sounds like you could toss kidnaping charges in here as well...but maybe this was the "23-year-old passenger was taken to a hospital but left before he could be interviewed."

Stay safe.

When things like this happen people wonder why I don't do anything!!! Collect my check and go home happy. I hope these kids are alright. They will learn that non of these injuries or the flying around in the car cowboy style will ever be worth it. I'm pulling for these guys to come out all good and on top. Pray for them and the families. It would be nice if someone who works with them could start something where each district and unit could do an informal "pass the hat" to give some money to the coppers families.. I would be more than willing to pass it around in my district for these guys. Moral of the story kids, don't do anything for these animals.. I'm sure not going over the speed limit to do anything for them... Get well guys

My bad. No offense intended, friend -- just concerned that the facts got out right. It's easier to talk face-to-face than it is on these computers, where you don't get any other cues.

Heard it blow on Z12 and knew it was major. Like so many other awful things, lives shattered from just wild-ass stupidity.

Every day I thank God for even a cold, rainy morning, every time I go by a hospital I give thanks that I am not in it.

Good reason to worry -- this happened on south side a few years ago. Ofc. was pinned in car -- 79th St? 95th? -- and the hyenas swarmed in and got his wallet and weapon. I heard his guys went to the hospital, promised him "We'll get your s__t back," and did. Last I heard, ofc. was not doing well, had been moved to "long-term care" in another state, maybe closer to family members.

Sorry I can't recall his name or dig the story out on the web...so many crimes. Anyone else who recalls, kick in. You are still in our thoughts, my man -- hope things have gotten better for you.

"The officers had the green light and slowly entered the intersection looking for the Impala. But about 8:15 p.m., Paris ran the red light and T-boned the driver’s side of the unmarked car...[Paris] was driving at "speeds exceeding 21 mph over the speed limit..." so he got a solid hit at at least 50 and probably more...

Please...
Until they willingly advance and be recognized as being
firmly rooted on law and order, every Policeman worth their
salt should continue to expect treachery from them and their
office.

Think about it...
If that non-driving hyena had been able to escape his wadded-up
car and the natural progression had occurred?

You know...
Foot pursuit. More foot pursuit. Tackle/take-down. Fight/resist arrest.
Getting his ass legally and justifiably torn the fuck up until the cuffs finally go on...

Even if the Police response in the above scenario was holy,
who do you think would've been standing in front of a judge looking crazy?

You get three guesses and two of 'em don't count...

Seriously glad the hyena couldn't get out of his car and escape.

Really seriously glad the injured Coppers
weren't set upon by the local hyenas and harmed/disarmed.

Our care and concern is always
with the men and women who
work this nasty, shit-doo-doo job.

Blessings, TLC and full healing
to the injured officers.

We expect our sentiment toward
the Cook Couty Judiciary to be
fully validated by the very likely
soft and squishy sentence the
in-custody hyena will most
certainly receive.

I am praying for you. My whole family is praying for you. I heard that the two officers injuries are severe and will require a lot of faith and prayer. This should be a reminder to everyone that your life can change abruptly in a single moment. That is why it is important to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. If I didn't have such strong faith I have no clue how I would have made it through some of life's very difficult circumstances.

First, thank you for your service, Officers, and for what you have suffered as a result of being Officers of the Chicago Police Department. Your lives are precious to us, as they are to your families, your brothers-and sisters-in-arms and yourselves. My heart aches learning of the extent of the injuries you suffered. My prayers are with you three. My heart is too. May God watch over each of you every step of your recoveries. Take your time healing. Stay strong in spirit, for there is much more will and tenacity waiting to be tapped during your healing than you could imagine. Use every bit of it. Have faith. Know you are loved, truly loved, by the good people of this city, for you are our protectors, our heroes. Godspeed.
