Off Duty Shot at Side Job

  • A man accused of grabbing an off-duty Chicago Police officer’s service weapon and shooting her in the leg was ordered held without bail on Sunday.

Raphael Jordan, 48, was charged with attempted murder of a police officer in the July 23 shooting in the 2200 block of East 69th Street in the South Shore neighborhood. Judge Adam D. Bourgeois Jr. ordered Jordan to be held without bail.

The officer, a 37-year-old woman who was wearing her Chicago Police badge on her belt, was working as a security guard for a construction company when she saw Jordan walking away from the construction site with a hammer drill owned by the company, Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said in court Sunday
Best wishes to the Officer for a speedy recovery.

Thank you, Judge Bourgeois. One of the few judges I've learned to appreciate and trust.

I didn't know how to message you, but I am curious what you think of this article. (Mobile site is a little weird)

I find your blog humorous since my dad was a cop for many years with Chicago. I'm thinking of taking the test, etc., but looking at the different view points, pros/cons to see if it's worth it. CPD will not be on the list since I moved away a while back.

Thank you for your time; I look forward to your (and probably others) response.

Give notice to the XO for the watch you're working, and sign out a radio from the station. That's always been a fast area, and has rarely been police friendly!

Prayers for the officer, even part time jobs be careful, total lack of respect for police especially from the black community, another reason cvs isn't rebuilding in Baltimore, hard enough for a business to survive in that environment!

Here's a question... Just curious, but why did RBT detectives handle the job of the off duty shot and not the HGS people. The Area Central Detective Division truly has gone down hill over the last five years. When a Det. Div. Sgt doesn't know which side to give a officer shit to should be back in patrol.

He was on the phone today and two people walked right up to him while he was on the phone with his back to them . One walked threw the metal detector , which went off and just kept walking !! I recognized him as a po from GEU but how many just walk threw ?! Then u walk to the back of HQ and it's like a hang out for IR'#s!! Man something bad is going to happen , sadly it takes that before anything changes .

The sergeants have not been the problem (maybe now) but the issue has been someone between then and the commander.... Thinks he knows all, but screwing shit up

The new Lt in 018 is Paula Schmeer and she was dumped out of R&D. She is making life miserable on the p.o.'s with her micro-management styles and the fact that everything has to be done according to general orders because that is all she has ever known being a house mouse for the majority of her career. Not only does she have the dogs on the watch seeking other watches and districts to go to but the workers are also seeking greener pastures. If she wasn't bad enough, 018 days also got Sgt. Schmidt from midnights. He is the male version of the Lt. except that he is on the street and following you around all day and putting his 2 cents in on the jobs that you are handling. Most of the time giving bad advice and fucking up the job your doing. Midnights in 018 termed it being "Schmidt" on! You combine these two fools along with the 5th watch(foot teams)bullshit and you are left with a miserable and degraded 2nd watch in 018. And its getting worse by the day. Enjoy your retirement Lt. Schmit, your not missing anything here.

I agree 9:36am. How about all the sex offenders who hang out right outside the back entrance, smoking and hanging out?!? I once saw a guy walk inside unplug his phone which was charging on a plug inside by the star cases, then, go back outside and wait in line. Why is that tolerated?

1st,I hope the officer is doing well.

The Tribune article relating this shooting was written by a reporter by the name of Sarah Freishtat. I sent her an email at sfreisht@tribpub.com and congratulated her for truth in reporting.

She never used the word "alleged" once in her article. She used the word "CHARGED" in the murder. She quoted the judge verbatim:"You pose a threat and danger to everyone". She spelled out only the police side of the incident as told by a Cook County States Attny. She also dutifully reported that the charged man denied he did it through his public defender.

It was an honest, good old fashioned, non-opinionated, reporting of the then known facts of the case.

Never once used the word "alleged"; A word that through overusage has become a modern laugh line.

A retired CPD here who gave her, her due.

Wish there were more honest reporters out there.

Security guys on phone or surfing the net. God help the cops working there. The only difference between 35th and the districts is there aren't any homeless sleeping in the loby.

None other than Paula Schmeer. She was despised in R&D and when the new Director came she was promptly dumped. Prior to R&D she was in 006 where she would cry in staff meetings.

Yes, getting to work on time and handling your jobs would make it SEEM like the worst place to work, but it's not. Busy? Yes. Understaffed? Aren't we all? How's this, you've been spoiled. Do you think any other major police department in any city over a million in population has sex-offender registration inside their own headquarters?

Saving money, you know. First Police HQ merged with Fire Dept. HQ and it became Public Safety. Now who best to bolster Public Safety than every sex-offender in the City of Chicago? Sure, put them right inside our Police HQ. Typical brilliant Chicago decision.

The new Lt. on the 2nd watch in 018 is a "breath of fair fresh air". There is nothing wrong with following the rules as long as everyone one has to follow them. She has her work cut out for her I'm afraid in that under the last two previous Lts., a system of selective enforcement and privileges existed to a point that was criminal, no punt intended. Keep up the good job Mamn and keep your head up when you walk by those who have been coddled for too long.
