How Did We Miss This?
- A report from the City Council Office of the Legislative Inspector General concludes that 29 aldermen took in a total of $282,000 in illegal campaign donations in 2013. The donations, ranging anywhere from $500 to in excess of $50,000, were found to have violated the city’s ethics ordinance, according to Legislative Inspector General Faisal Khan.
The ordinance limits aldermen from receiving campaign contributions in excess of $1,500 from "persons who have done business with the City or its sister agencies within the previous four years, persons who are seeking to do business with the city or its sister agencies, and lobbyists."
The ordinance defines “doing business,” as receiving more than $10,000 in a calendar year from the city. The L.I.G.’s office would not say who the aldermen were, but assistant Legislative Inspector General Michael Graham told "Chicago Tonight" that the office found “four aldermen that had $50,000 or more in questionable contributions.”
We're surprised it's "only" $282,000. He must have missed a few a zeros at the end of the total there - but aldercreatures have been stealing for years and Khan has only been inspecting for a little while.

So what we learn from this is that the LIG was sitting in an office collecting a paycheck for 4 years and had no teeth to finish any investigation he initated.
We also learned that he had information regarding some type of Official Misconduct. BUT waited till his last day of work to turn this information over to the Feds.
As a personn who has spoken personally to this past LIG regarding complaints involving former and current Aldermen along with former and current Mayors. He knew where his place was and would not even leave his office to secure the required signed affidavits. Or secure any evidence, that established any of these allegations.
His most memorable words to me were, "Even if I secure a signed affidavit on this allegation, I must notify the City Council of the allegation which means the accused member would be told of this investigaton."
So us tax payers have spent money on a LIG THAT DID NOTHING. And now is eligible for a pension........

With 50 Aldermen just being a rubberstamp body of legislators, why not cut down the size of the City Council to 20 or 25 at most?
No great loss as far as any political masterminds or government innovators. They could ALL go back and find jobs at Home Depot or Starbucks.
Cut back the City Council by 50% and take ALL that money and pour it into Police hires and ongoing operations.
That would be a good "sacrifice" for the political class to make in order to "save the City".

FBI came with a subpoena and collect his files. Supposedly a half dozen to a dozen aldermen are being looked at. The FBI does not start something they don't think they can finish. 29 Aldermen convicted while in office since 1972 and more after they left office.

I signed a complaint against an aldermen. Then never heard back form this guy. Guess he knew his job was to sit on all the complaints. I read somewhere he was getting over $200 an hour. And residing in two residences since his wife would not move to chicago.........

Legislative Inspector General Faisal Khan, who was appointed by Rahm to give a False Impression that Rahm was going to Clean UP the City actually had no powers to follow through on any investigation, just as Rahm and the prior Alderman wanted it.
Then to really get rid of him, they just took away his budget and payroll.
His Fu** You to them was to call the Feds and release all his files to them, good move. Now we have to wait and see if they really want to move forward on these investigations.
Watch for them to jump on John Pope, and the Ford Money. Pope lost his spot by 20 votes and Rahm bailed him out by paying off his debt and giving him a Cush, do nothing job at the Water Plant.

I think you missed some little details.
First, we knew when he was hired that these limitations on his 'powers' existed.
(You could have been raising your concerns about this for several YEARS now.)
Second, he was involved in joint investigations WITH the feds. When he found he had no successor to turn the files over to, they were secured by the feds.
Read the WHOLE story, instead of extrapolating from misleading headlines.
The city council is only responsible for creating ordinances not following them. Rules are only for little guy who is not connected. Power corrupts. The greed for money totally corrupts. Much like Congress who writes law for the common folk but exempts themselves. The Affordable care Act or O'Bamacare is an example of the Congressional rule makers and their staffs exempting themselves from the laws which the pass.
There is a glossy booklet published by the city written by then Board of Ethic director Steve Berlin titled: Ethics in City Government. Obviously this is not required reading for criminal enterprising city council. Looks good on the city website with lots of related educational ethics based reading materials. All for show giving a false impression of honor and accountability by a legally controlling body.

If the Feds haven't done shit to Shortshanks, why the fuck do you think they are going to do shit now?
Its about time the feds stepped up to the plate, submitted computers for forensic examinations, initiated an investigation and an inquiry into corrupt business as usual protocols of the silly council. Not that the State's Attorney General, the Cook County States Attorney's Office Public corruption Unit, the Cook County Sheriff's Police nor the Chicago Police Department would initiate an audit or conduct a financial accounting of the practices of elected officials assuring compliance to established ordinances and applicable laws.
Rule #1-Don't make waves. Mess with party members and you will be blacklisted and banned from holding a position in the higher circles of law enforcement with a higher pay grade and egotistical power. After all, in theory police work for the people not for an entrenched political network. Its not like the aldermens killed someone. Its only money. But this is the city, not some ethical utopia.
Can't wait to see some alderman running into the federal building avoiding the t.v. cameras. One has to wonder how many of the aldermen are sweating an losing sleep knowing the suits are looking into their money. Why become a part time alderman if you can't make fat stacks on the side off the books.

Dennis Walsh's safe at home couldn't hold all the files so they called in the Feds.
5:02pm...the difference is, Daley knew where all the bodies are buried and had a whole network of people in front of him willing to fall on the sword and take the fall b4 anything ever came back to him. The only other person in city govt with that much power is Burke. So yes, something might come out of all of this.

Isn't it funny that if a law enforcement officer takes $1.00, he's guilty by all means and stripped of his pension once he receives a Felony.. I want to see an ordinance create that if any Alderman have been found to be involved in any illegal acts will lose their job, as well as jail time. I have filed many complaints that have been ignored by the Aldermans the Cook County Comissioners, the former United States Attorney Patrick Fidzgeld, the ONLY ONE THAT DID RESPONSE WAS THE CHEIF JUSTICE TIMOTHY EVANS!
