Where Does the Money Go?
Imagine if you were able to see every taxing body that sticks their fingers into a gallon of gas:
- In April 2014, I suddenly realized that when you buy gasoline, the receipt does not list all the different taxes you have to pay.
So I emailed the Illinois Policy Institute (https://www.illinoispolicy.org) and asked them to make up a facsimile of a gas receipt.
Here's what they came up with, and they featured it in a story on their website.
Turns out a gallon of gas in Chicago has eight taxes on it. In Park Ridge adds two cents more. (I think today they are higher.)
I went to a neighborhood gas station – the owner was a nice guy. I asked him if people get angry with him when gasoline goes up in price.
He said of course they do. I said, "Why don't you put a sign in your window, listing all the taxes the customers are paying on a gallon of gas?"
He said, "That's illegal in Illinois. I would get fined and could lose my gas station!"
Eight different taxes - and the vendor isn't allowed to show you what the taxes are.

And we are still broke?!
Disgusting. Fill up in the suburbs if you can.
If the taxes were posted on the pump and people saw how they are being reaped off the politicians would all be having a short term in office.
I don't buy my gas in Illinois if I can help it. With several 5 gal jugs I pretty much keep my vehicles full of gas and not a cent going to the thieving politicians in Springfield, Cook County, or Chicago.
WOW!!
I think that the government is out of control .
Some portion is going to an off shore account
It always blew my mind why people who live here didn't know the REAL reason why gas was much higher here AND politicians acted dumb about it as well: DUH!!! Even I knew (I'm not from here), that Illinois has taxes on top of taxes when it came to the price of gas! The politicians KNOW the real reason why gas is high here - stop blaming it on a WINTER or SUMMER blend... lol
Thanks for showing that breakdown...
Once again, this is why I gas up and shop in Indiana... Living on the South side has its privileges.
i paid $1.83 out of state. Enjoy your Chicago corruption. You voted for it.
But it's ok for the Machine/Outfit to show property taxpayers how much goes to pensions......
There are no disclosure laws like that nation wide.
Forty years ago, we had posters on the side of the the pump. IIRC saying 14 cents federal and 23 cents state and local. I guess our politicians do not want us to know how much they are taking from us.
What statute prohibits a gas station from listing the taxes?
The 1st Amendment isn't applicable in Socialist run utopia's.
I filled my car up a few days ago in lovely Trevor Wisconsin. Paid $1.62 a gallon. Have a nice day.
Excellent idea but someone has to pay for the bike lanes.
Never ever buy gas in the city. (or the state of Illinois if you can help it)
Corruption is very expensive.
So the truth is illegal in Illinois. Why am I not surprised?
Have a great day! Like saying go f*ck yourself.
I have a lot of family members who own gas stations. If you call a gas station, and ask them how much is the price of a gallon of gasoline, they can't tell you that over the phone. It is illegal and they can be fined for telling you over the phone.
It is well past pitchfork and torches time.
This is why I buy my food, gasoline, and now ammo out of state.
I REFUSE to subsidize Illinois, Cook County and especially Chicago corruption.
As long as they keep pissing it away, I'll keep my money out of state.
I doubt the accuracy of the comment that posting the taxes is illegal. Show me.
Buy Costco
How surprising that showing the taxes in Illinois is illegal.
The State alone collects nearly 40 cents per gallon of gasoline and they're broke?
Illinois double taxes each gallon,18 cents excise tax and then 6% added to the total price of the gallon then add Chicago 14 cents a gallon tax.
The major oil companies may make billions in profits each year but it is overshadowed by what government takes in in taxes.
Why would it be illegal to show where our money goes? What law is broken by showing the tax breakdown?
What a bunch of Crap!!!
I use an actual $12.00 worth of electricity, and I get a $40.00 bill. The "delivery fee" and other "fees" and taxes cost more than the product does. I get the feeling that small users get hit disproportionately, too.
It jumped noticeably when the "smart meters" came in. Maybe I can find some 14-year-old hacker kid in Moldova to get in there and roll mine back a little...naw. He'd probably just make the lights flash on and off constantly.
Same goes for Food prices, another scam on Illinoisans. (Obamaland)
Illinois is Evil. Avoid this State. #1 ripoff State in the USSA.
the socialist empire of cook county and Chicago thank you for the support and loyalty to higher taxes. the redistribution of wealth is alive and well and more importantly... you will like it.
the people at Daniel Webster will honor our request to change the definition of liberal, liberalism to STFU. the old definition does not mesh with todays left wing.
State still won't pay lottery winners! Let's not forget perchwinkle's overnite camping in the forest preserves.
Just wait till the city tries to tell you cannot buy outside of city as you are a city employee
I know where it goes.....
http://www.gasbuddy.com/
Use the App.... Gas buddy. It's free and useful in traveling from Chi to Southside, collar counties and other States,i.e.: Indiana.
I saw that in a gas station in WI, listed Fed and state taxes.
Probably the million dollar FOIA would be how much of that tax money goes to where its suppose to. IL has been robbing that fund for years...just like the Tollway Authority
Why does everyone keep believing the "state is broke" or the "city is broke" stories? They have plenty of money to spend. This just shows gasoline taxes and how much they take in. Per gallon. Each day.
Add in sales tax on every other purchase YOU make. Everything we do is taxed now. Plus cable tv tax, cell phone tax, etc etc etc .....
Yeah believe them that they cannot contribute to funding pensions. Uh huh.

That's great and all, but this is a blog about Chicago. I paid $1.80 at Costco today and didn't have to drive 50 miles back to the city and waste two or three gallons of gas in the process. At the end of the day buy paying a few cents more I'm ahead of the game and I didn't waste more than 15 minutes of my time.

Corruption is expensive these days.
With so many snouts in the public trough, a dollar doesn't go as far as it did.
Besides, Democratics spend money like drunken sailors in a whore house.
Here is Wyoming's fuel taxes:
Fuel type, and Total Tax per gallon this includes a 1 cent per gallon sales tax:
Gasoline/Gasohol/Propane/Compressed Natural Gas: 0.24 cents
Aviation Gas/Jet Fuel: $ 0.05
Undyed Diesel/Kerosene/Biodiesel Blend/Liquified Natural gas 0.24 Cents
Dyed Diesel/Dyed Kerosene/Dyed Biodiesel Blend 0.1 cent
and all compressed liquified gases are 0.24 cents per gallon.
That is it. Did I mention we have a balanced budget, billions invested and a fully funded state pension plan. The grass is greener.....;^)

Do you really mean one tenth of one cent, and 24/100ths of a cent?
or do you mean one cent and 24 cents?
Decatur Illinois yesterday $1.57 per gallon regular 87 octane. Got home and it was 1.93 in Chicago.

I don't like Preckwinkle! But, the Chicago area was one of the few places which did not have an urban area campground. I am proud to say I was (might say always will be) a Boy Scout and loved camping. In my younger years I traveled cross country on my motorcycle and stayed in some very nice municipal campground. One of the best was in Toronto, ON.
BTW looks like that overnight camping is a little expensive:
April – October (Thursday – Saturday Nights)
TYPE CAPACITY COOK COUNTY RESIDENT NON-RESIDENT
Tent Campsite 6 $35/night $45/night
Tent or RV Campsite (With Electricity) 6 $50/night $60/night
Small Cabin 8 $80/night $90/night
Large Cabin 10 $100/night $110/night
Small Bunkhouse 16 $140/night $150/night
Large Bunkhouse 30-60 $200/night $210/night
Organized Group Campsite 36 $20/tent/night $30/tent/night
Rather this than more taxes.

Which Costco? That's a lot less than the one on Clyborn.
Heading up to Wisc. this weekend while I'm off to do ALL my Christmas shopping and other shopping needs. I'll get cheap gas and pay a sales tax 50% of what I would here.
The city charges to collect our garbage. Can anyone tell me how much the city makes with the recycling program?
Have any of the south suburbs paid their water bills yet?
I can see how this is unclear, sorry this is directly from the Wyoming State government site. It is 24 cents, 1 cent etc. per gallon. These are just Wyoming's Taxes.
South Carolina: $1.75/gal........total.
Hate to tell you but Wisconsin is one of the top 10 or 11 taxing states in the country. They even have taxes on seviced like haircuts, dry cleaning, labor on car repairs.......
