Got Our Backs?

Somebody is not only drinking the kool-aid, they're brewing up some potent batches:
  • Amid scrutiny and criticisms surrounding the Laquan McDonald case and others, Interim Chicago Police Supt. John Escalante wants officers to know he and other top brass have their backs if they do the right thing.
Really? Wow. Thanks John! If we're 100% correct, you (and other top brass) have got our backs! What a relief that is! Are you fucking kidding us? We can't believe someone actually said this with a straight face. If we're 100% correct, legally, morally, ethically, departmentally, guess what Mr. Six?
  • We don't need you to have our backs then.
Here's a bit of wisdom that came our way the other night regarding all these so-called "bosses" who are running around to roll calls to "re-assure" officers:
  • You can't have our backs and claim to support us when you aren't the ones out there doing the shit work. You aren't going to be on video. You aren't going to be sued directly. You aren't going to be sitting next to any one of us as a lawyer asks for (and gets) a listing of our assets and liabilities. You aren't going to be in federal court admitting that the push for numbers is the driving force behind you keeping your cushy spot.
Cops aren't afraid to do their jobs. Cops are afraid of losing their jobs for nonsense, for bullshit, for shifting political winds that blame the officer for every little ill that the community had inflicted on itself for the past 50 or 60 years (despite the officer being maybe 30 years old and on the job for at most, 5 years).

You want a list of people who have nothing to fear in regard to their jobs? Take a look at your command staff - if there are even three without multiple "merit" promotions, we'd be amazed. How about they get out here and show us how it's done? We won't insult them by saying, "Show us how you did it back in the day," because we all know they didn't do shit back in the day.

Thanks but no thanks. November 20th 2015 I was a worker... By December 10th or so I was no longer a worker, nor will I ever be a worker again. The bashing by the media, politicians and citizens is out of control. I'm done and so are many many more

UBravo. So true! I always felt that there was always bosses who did have your back. This turned about ten years ago. There are very few that have your back anymore! However much even these bosses may not be able to help you because the next person in line may not and this could go all the way up the ladder to the mayors office. We all know he has our backs with a sharp point sticking in it!

So, what you're saying is you'll do your job, what you get paid to do.
If a cop doesn't do anything wrong you won't railroad the cop? And why the fuck would you?
I'm still wondering....still wondering....
Oh, I got it. If the mayor says to railroad a cop you'll do it.
If the mayor tells you to wear a purple wig and makeup to work you'll do it.
If the mayor says to suck his peepee, on your knees you'll go.

SCC - Once again you hit the 10 ring with a snub nose! Actions, such as having the ACLU receive copies of ISRs or suspensions for officers reading the famous Zak Emanuel case report will keep the street-wise officer from buying your BS. To paraphrase Wm. Shakespeare "me thinks thou dost protesteth too much!"

The Top Brass has got your back?!?!?!

The ONLY joke topping THAT is - the FOP has your back!

What has happened in Chicago? REALLY? Please tell me.

Change the name. No, not to Chiraq or Detroit.

It doesn't have to be a"violent" name or anything that denotes violence. It could be more pleasant and quaint - like Moronville.

If there were real leadership in Chicago, you would set a tone of - "HEY, grow up and pay attention and set some goals for yourself" for EVERY citizen there.

Instead, it is the City for pandering to everyone's crybaby requests. It has gone from the "City that works" to "the City that doesn't want to work."

Clouted losers do NOT make good leaders.

Panel for Accountability. Panel for Fair Treatment of Criminals. What else does Chicago want to have?

How about the Panel to Kick Your Ass if You Mess up Anything in the City?

"Got our backs", that they even use that particular phrase mystifies me. You would think the Brass would kind of want to disassociate themselves from that phrase after our beloved Mayors use of it hours before he dumped McNumnuts. As far as backing us if we are 100% right, who are they kidding. If the 100% justified shooting happened to inflame the uninformed masses they would throw us to the wolves. Do they think we have such short memories that we can't remember a uniformed Police Officer getting punched in the face on National TV and the offender being released with all charges dropped, "for the good of the City"?
Go try to sell your bull shit to someone who will believe it, none of us sure are not falling for your lies.
You (brass), Rahm, the ACLU and the pond scrum law firms like Lovey and Lovey have destroyed this Department and in doing so the safety and security of its citizens, I don't see how you or anyone else is going to ever get that trust that we have to have in our bosses back if we are ever going to curb the growing criminal element in this city. You can deny it is your fault but you know as well as we do, its on you .

And, of course if you are not 100% correct you just gave them an out.

Let's take into account that the clouted are treated very different than the rank and file. Where is Yomishiroya....Where is Andrews.....Where is Saleme....all three bosses all IN CHARGE if the Koschman investigation all left the job with big dollar retirement checks. No issues, just Daley minions receiving their payments (all multiple merit promoted) . Walsh, another boss on the case still hanging on despite being dumped to another specialized unit in the detective division. He is still supervising detectives.....nothing has happened to him....nothing. NOTHING. Cirone is still supervising detectives in the detective division in homicide investigations, another clouted up the butt. Again both merit promoted. All bosses all IN charge of Koschman case all used their merit promoted position to assist the political powers connected to this investigation and nothing happens to them. That's cause when your a boss all of the other multi merit promoted bosses have your back, because you all have the same political connections. So Excaliente take your 100 % support when I'm right and put that in your multi merit promoted arse.

We all know it's a way of getting us to bring in the silly stats for you so you can further your carreers. Unfortunately now there are new laws and rules(that you bosses wrote for us may I remind you) so we have to watch our own backs now. But hey, thanks for stopping by roll call no one would ever know what you guys look like.

But the REAL issue here is the Sup now looking for little bullshit to ding Officers while handling a job. Hard to believe the Head Honcho Poncho (no pun intended)has nothing more important to figure out, think about, look for, than to go after beat tags. "Have their backs if they do the right thing". More than 30 yrs. ago, when the Dept. had Affirmative Action for White Minorities, our Token Jewish Commander, who was also an attorney came down to Roll Call and told us the same thing: "If you're in the right, I am 100% behind you. But if you are wrong, I am an attorney and will have to nail you." Needless to say, Howie did not inspire us then and DeEscalante is not inspiring anyone today. If the Officer is in the Right, he does not need anyone to have his back. The world is not Black and White. Who covers the cop who makes an honest mistake? And mistakes are very possible, even likely when dealing with citizens in crisis. Who has your back when there is doubt? Anyone who does anything beyond answering their radio call is a "Chump". Beautifully written, SCC, particularly the last two paragraphs. This Department is being ran by so called "police officers" who have never done the job. Who have been taken care of their whole careers and have been merit promoted all the way up the chain. They never have had to do the dirty work or wonder if they will end up sitting at call back or in a Federal court room. Yet they have the audacity to came in and tell us to go out there and put everything we have worked for our whole lives and possibly our freedom and families well being on the line. Screw that and screw them.

I know and worked with some of the current command staff and many of those who have left in the past few years. A lot of them were decent police officers ands a lot of them held cushy assignments in their careers. It was a mixed bag. But, in my mind, this still does not justify multiple merit promotions with people rising through the ranks within a few years. I looked at the recent batch of captains promotions and at least two on that list went from police officer to captain within 12 years ( when I retired)all merit promotions. I have seen deputy chiefs go from police officer to deputy chief in 12 years all merit . there is nothing like this BS system of political promotions to destroy moral and shake the confidence of the boys/girls in the field in their leaders. Add the fact that these wonders will not be in your corner when things go bad and they have a bad habit of talking down to the working cops and you have a disaster in the making. Daley really screwed up the city and the department and left a mess in his wake that will take at least a generation to fix, if ever. The ACLU is happy, for now, but they will never accept blame for what they have wrought.

Speaking of "got your backs": Heads up from the Guy on a Bike...

The City Clerk has once again changed the language that governs the City Sticker on the official website

Cut and paste:

"All Chicago residents driving and/or parking a vehicle for which they are responsible in the City of Chicago are subject to the Chicago Wheel Tax and must purchase a Chicago City Vehicle Sticker. This includes Chicago residents that maintain their registration outside of the City of Chicago, but use the vehicle in the City."

http://www.chicityclerk.com/city-stickers-parking/about-city-stickers

Please note the language "Chicago residents that maintain their registration outside of the City of Chicago but use the vehicle in the City."

Now...why do I bring this up? I got 'badged" by a CPD PO the other week while I was working the Loop. Was parked Illegally in a Pickup...and I actually was just trying to get him to move the vehicle. When the badge came out, attitude was a little off; so I gave the "Sir, where is your city sticker" (because there wasn't one of the Truck at all) question to mellow him out and slow him down so I could remain polite and professional and just get him to move the darn truck. Turned out to be a nice guy, we chatted for a few minutes about the ordinance and the recent changes that the City Clerk and the Pedestrian/Traffic Committee have been making over the last few months of 2015. I ended up just telling him to do some research and give all of his co-workers the heads up; and he gave me his business card and we went our separate ways with no tickets issued (SEE? I CAN BE NICE TO COPS!!).

Moral here is Be careful out there with your damn ID's. Don't give any of US at Finance Proof you are a City Employee if there isn't a city sticker on the vehicle. Some of my co-workers are a bit more hardcore than I am these days.

Cheers!

If I recall, I don't believe there is a GO on the books that prohibits a PO from making a copy so you can protect yourself in case of Criminal or Civil action.

For that matter...google the manufacture of the device and see what peripheral storage/copying devices are compatible to the camera. Small laptops with a SD card Port can be used to make a fast copy to your hard drive...which should always be password protected and only surrendered to the CPD IT department under a subpoena if I recall correctly.

DeEscalante is goofy.

We don't need any "back having" when we're right.
We need it when unavoidable circumstance forces us
to take a step into the gray area to come out safe and sound.

Oath of Office isn't a death wish or being willing to take a
lick in a lawful but awful situation...

You know, those situations that are so open to interpretation?
Copper doing what needed to be done in spite of bad optics?

R/O is not filling out this ISR voluntarily, but under duress. R/O was verbally ordered by Sgt/LT/Capt/Cmdr so and so that failure to conduct street stops and complete said ISR will result in loss of R/O's current assignment.
See how that flies!

You are soft!!!

UBravo.

No Shit, Einstein? The Old-Timers tried to tell u this when u hit the Districts from the Academy, but U wouldn't listen. Instead u chose to disrespectfully call them "Dogs", and U knew better then they did, despite their decades policing the cesspool and political Whorehouse called Chicago, and you and your Newbies were gonna clean up the town. Well, Embrace the Suck" like Pelosi said. You and your Fellow Dimwit Millennials voted in all these Democrat Communists who now run everything, so you're gettin exactly what you all voted for, so don't cry now. Just Embrace the Suck, Suckers. Baaah, Baaah, Baaah, Sheeple. Your misery is only beginning, Dopes.

Check out the story on sun-times and tribune websites. Looking to fire Walsh and the sgts a yr suspensions.

I think the feds investigating CPD should start with the clout bosses who don't know shit. The lower ranks have no faith in their leaders because they are (many at least) know-nothing clout babies promoted beyond their capabilities with no leadership qualities whatsoever.

How can you have faith in your organization when you see the unfairness of the promotional system? Leadership starts at the top.

How can you respect bosses who've not done any real work on the job and who get promoted to lead you having never been in battle? What incentive do you have to work hard for promotions when you know the system is rigged?

Hello feds. Start with the clout babies and see how f*cked up CPD is because of the clout-heavy command structure.

Just like Escalante stopping at a job, writing up 2 beat cars and 1 sgt for not displaying their beat tags ? Oh, and it was Sunday and he was off duty. That for sure is not a big issue, since these 3 cars had PO made paper tags that didn't last. Its only a bit of paper. But the REAL issue here is the Sup now looking for little bullshit to ding Officers while handling a job. Hard to believe the Head Honcho Poncho (no pun intended)has nothing more important to figure out, think about, look for, than to go after beat tags. A bit of moral support would have been better served ! But since Escalante has showed his colors, I hope he doesn't overlook his beloved working first watch at 051. After all, we are all EQUAL ! LOL

ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME?

If Escalante did that, you dimwits better figure out how to be less proactive than fetal.

What a prince this guy is, huh?

Yes, keep believing the upper echelon 'has our backs'.

Unf*cking real. Seriously unbelievable.

As a retired boss I would like to comment here. If a guy is 100% right it is easy to have his/her back. They are right, they don't need my support other than moral support to get through any BS they may encounter while they prove they were 100% right. Now if an officer does something that is a little off color, it takes courage to have his/her back in that situation. But that is exactly what a good boss should do. There are two kinds of mistakes, one of the head and one of the heart. If an officer is out there intentionally doing things wrong, then why should anyone have his/her back. They made the choice to do things wrong. However, if an officer is out there and makes a mistake of the heart, that is when he/she needs the boss to back them. That is when they need the boss to give them good, solid, and legal advice. Stick by the officer at that time. Really give them moral support. Defend them to the higher ups. Again, isn't that what a good boss does. Things happen quickly in law enforcement and officers must make split second decisions that most of the time those are pretty good decisions. Not many people outside of law enforcement could make those quick decisions under the tons of stress in situations most people would cower from. But the officers do it and they do it well, day in and day out. As a boss I felt I had a duty to support those officers and back them all the way. They needed to know that they were not on their own and I would see them through it. We were proud to be the police back then. It saddens me that we are not that proud CPD anymore! But I understand completely why officers feel the way they do today. Stay Safe and remind your loved ones how much you love them!

2/03/2016 06:41:00 PM

Shit....

Dude is 100% correct...friend of mine is the Supervisory License Investigator out of City Hall for the Clerk....I called him this morning and posited the question to him.

He said It is 100% correct and that coming in the next few weeks or months...the Clerk and possibly Finance are going to be going through all City Employee Only Parking lots to ticket all vehicles without a City Sticker unless it is a Rental.
