Fire Oops

  • The third-highest ranking member of the Chicago Fire Department resigned Wednesday after crashing a city-owned vehicle near Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park.

John McNicholas, who ran the Bureau of Operations, was involved in a crash off Lake Shore Drive near North Avenue early Wednesday, according to an emailed statement from Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

He was driving a CFD vehicle westbound on La Salle Drive just off Lake Shore at 12:50 a.m. when another vehicle cut him off, according to Chicago Police.

The CFD vehicle swerved to avoid a collision, went over a curb and struck a utility pole, police said. No one was hurt.
The vehicle:

It sure looks like that pole did everything it could to jump dead center of the hood. Luckily, none of the occupants of the city owned vehicle were seriously injured.

The cover up continues. I heard Santiago was on the 5th Floor for 4 hours today. So much for his beloved 64 exempt rank officers. Now, let's see who the front runner ends of being. A lot of phone calls to politicans and preachers probably started as soon as he announced his resignation. He didn't submit to drug and alcohol testing like all the rest of us. It took a few hours before he dropped. He has long ties into the 11th Ward. He will drop down to Battalion Chief (if they allow him) where he will receive union representation. However, it did happen whIle he was a deputy fire comissioner. Those positions are considered a "at will" employee. It will be interesting how this plays out.

He didn't want medics wearing bullet proof vests. Several cases of sexual harassment against him. Busted for screwing his secretary at the academy.

I hope the responding officers don't get jammed up for him. He isn't worth it.

And as of last night he is stepping off the job.

Still waiting for some solid info that he had a passenger in the car I would expect that he did but so far only rumors.

If the officer "overlooked" the DUI, then the officer will suffer the consequences of their actions. Hopefully that is not the case. If the fireman was possibly DUI, then do your job. Give him field tests in front of a car with video. If hospitalized and gone before you arrive, then talk with hospital staff to see about their blood screen draw. It's not that difficult. Put the problem where it belongs...on the driver who made a bad decision to drink and drive. I don't care what rank or position they hold or who they might know. Don't get jammed up by their actions.

Sometimes the unpopular decision is the RIGHT decision. Especially in the present climate. I am not out to screw the fellow copper or fireman, but because of his position it equals more media publicity. You gotta cover your own ass in today's climate. Remember you want to be able to collect a pension. Don't let someone's lack of judgement jeopardize that for you or your family.

To SCC and all police. You must watch the documentary film that is currently on cable/satellite entitled Murder In The Park. It's an extremely well put together piece detailing the truth behind what happened in the days of Anthony Porter / Alstory Simon, Northwestern journalism students and Prof. Prowess. Most people do not know how that went down, and the news media never gave it the full attention it deserved. Watching this film will make your blood boil. As many times as you will say thruout this film 'I can't fkg believe they let this happen', you will immediately say 'oh yea, this is Chicago.'

This movie will make for a great topic of discussion on SCC. Specifically to discuss why this was allowed to happen by the states attorney and governor at that time. There is no doubt there is even more to the story then provided in this film.

Furthermore, Miss Lightfoot needs to watch this film and try to learn something. Bad guys lie, Lori.

Can't tell you how many times we drove coppers, and their cars home after a night out. Saved several lives and asses that way, and did it for CFD, nurses too. As long as there was no harm no foul and they didn't act stupid.

One afternoon years ago, I (a Sergeant) stopped a car going the wrong way on a one-way street and bouncing off the curb. The young male driver was wasted and all weepy. He said his brother was a cop that had been killed and he had a box of T-shirts about that fact. I put the R. Lee Ermey Drill Instructor voice on and reamed him out saying that being drink and stupid is NOT an acceptable form of mourning. I called a two man car over and told them to take him home but leave his car there so he doesn't kill someone later. We gave this guy a note where the car was. That drunken kid told the officers on the way home he realized he just got the break of a lifetime. I home he didn't waste it.

Times are changing. If you think that drunken coppers -on duty and off including exempt- have not gotten a break in the past think again. Today, you have to do what you have to do. As an observation based on my experiences giving an officer with a drinking problem a break does not help the officer in the long run and puts you in the trick bag.

Recruit Academy training provides all you need for DUI enforcement. Too think otherwise is to be woefully ignorant of Law Enforcement on it's most basic level.

You better help yourself 1st when it comes to a motor vehicle accident involving a city vehicle where a suspected DUI is present.

I'm all about professional courtesy, my brother is CFD, couple things here, this is a 1 car accident , doesn't matter to me who owns the car, but was he alone? If not did the officer put that name on accident report? Did he officer check normal in box 1 for "apparent physical condition" or impaired- alcohol? In box 22 did the po put 1or 2 occupants? If he was alone that will help him, if not could be drama. Any witnesses? If not good for him, now I heard he did an administrative blow and he blew over .08, now if that is true the po and prolly his sgt will have drama and have to explain why he wasn't arrested, now one thing that will help them is if they don't do Dui's, but with all the bs going on, and the chief is white, people might say he got a break cuz he's white, and did the po have his in car camera mike on? The chief burned his spot up, he needs to go, the po maybe trying to help and look other way is about to find out, it ain't worth it, the chief won't be paying the po's mortgage and bills if he takes a hit and rule 14 might come into play cuz of the accident report, be smart boys and girls

CFD can retire safely with open investigations?

4/22/2016 06:32:00 AM

Why? Should they be concerned about permission to carry a hose after retirement?
What does 'retire safely' mean?
......
Lol. The word 'safely' was supposed to have been deleted.

Hey 01:47 pm. Yes administrative DUI tests are admissible in traffic court, but you have to charged with DUI first and they had to refuse the breath test 1st. It's falls under the Garrity ruling and people v Carey

Sounds like he was a real gem. Congratulations to the CFD on being relieved of his presence.

We had a hated supervisor escorted out a decade ago after landing in the paper. His replacement turned out to be an even bigger asshole. Wishing you better luck.

Yes, Frank Radke. He must have totaled at least 4 cars! But, he wouldn't hesitate to bang anyone for even the most minor infraction. One of them good old bosses and some would like to say. Just ask that girl that lost her job in 009, because of his stubborn ass.

I am retired CPD and always backed up CFD when called or on view even when they didn't ask for it. I was always glad that they came to my assistance when I called and always gave them every courtesy.

"I'm all about professional courtesy, my brother is CFD, "

You have personal bias because you want a blood relative to receive preferential treatment.
Professional Courtesy has no personal bias it comes down to treating the person with respect regardless to who they're related to. It goes both ways as well although Hose Pullers seem to forget that salient point.

You have respect for a drunk, cheating, clout baby scab? Someone who actually stole somebody else's job. Someone who was promoted to 3rd from the top simply because he had good attendance and not on his ability to lead men into a burning building. You're a special kind of stupid aren't you. I hope no one you know has had to call the fire department in the last 36 years. Wouldn't want some temper tantrum asshole climbing off the engine, looking to help. What a jagoff.

8:06 pm is correct . I have given more breaks than I have written tickets . Race never played a part in who received a ticket , it is all attitude .
I wrote more tickets to the name droppers , ward healers , campaigners , ticket buyers that had the attitude , I know blah , blah , blah , you better not write me or I will have your job . Those folks always received one ticket and two if I found a compliance violation .
Never transferred , fired , suspended . Few times asked about incident and told them the guy was a name dropper , disrespectful idiot .
In court , if they showed guilty . A few times they were no shows and I think the politician paid the ticket for them . Haha

As to cfd commissioner , if he was an arrogant prick to his fellow firefighters . Good riddance .

Frank was vindictive, hateful, and pompous. He was also worthy of his nickname "Drunk Tank Frank." There was a joke told around HQ about Frank trying to reform, and he therefore joined a 12-step program. Only then did people realize that it meant that Frank had promised to never park more than 12 steps from his favorite bar.
