Cop Grabs Shooter

  • A female Uber driver is hospitalized after being attacked and shot at gas station early Wednesday morning in the Homan Square neighborhood on Chicago's West Side.

Relatives say Leashia Allen, 55, is still recovering after she was shot by a would-be robber.

[...] Allen was shot around 4 a.m., just moments after she dropped off a fare. The Chicago resident had just pulled into a BP gas station in the 600-block of S. Independence to fill up when witnesses say a man came out of nowhere, pulled out a gun and told her he was going to rob her.

Allen's mother says her daughter told her things turned violent when she refused the gunman's order to give up her keys and get into the car.

"I think she didn't know exactly what was going on until he shot her," Ollie Allen, the victim's mother, said.

The man then ran away after the attack, but was caught by a Chicago police sergeant who was on patrol in the area and noticed the gunman trying to get away.
Someone just trying to make a living gets shot for her trouble.

Copper was in the right place at the right time. Nice job.

UBER constantly advertises on urban radio on how they, unlike cabs will pickup and drop off in under served areas. Yeah, until somebody gets shot.

There was a day that the police Sgt would have been mentioned before the 7th paragraph. I only have 15 years and got on at 21. It disappoints me to no end to see what this job has become in the short time I have been here. Beyond that I have to realize that I'm stuck until the end and don't see any sign of improvement.

The victim's mistake was getting gas for her car at 4:00AM on the west side. No one in their right mind should attempt to get gas ANYWHERE in the city at night, period. I hate to say it, but as far west as she already was, she could have easily gotten on the Eisenhower and gone a few short miles into Oak Park, Riverside, Berwyn or Stickney and gotten her gas somewhere along Harlem Ave. where it would have been far safer to do so. Whatever you don't have by midnite in Chiraq ain't worth buying until the sun comes up!

I am waiting for the activists to complain that the rights of the offender were violated by the secretive Homan Square Star Chamber.

Good job, officer.

This is the type of case that should be monitored and followed as it travels through the System. The Moron Offender surely realized that Uber drivers do not carry cash, so if he wanted to take the ride and the driver, he had more on his mind than just robbery. This poor woman was trying to make a living and providing a service in an area where cabs seldom venture. I hope the Media follows the case, and if the judge is lenient, he/she should be put on a list of judges not to be retained. We Need Such a List, and We Should Campaign against Judges Who Do Not Do the Job. Baby"G"

It's a great thing that Uber goes to the neighborhoods & serves 'the people' that nobody else in their right mind wants to...Keep pushing for Uber, Mr. Mayor.

She'll be labeled by the famous "at the wrong place at the wrong time" meme. There are certain hours of the day where you can actually "work" an actual job, while these savage thugs work the "streets" at all hours of the day.

Does this uberette realize that her own people did this to her? Will she sympathize with them and forgive them for their actions? Next time it might cost her her life....

Well done Sarge!

It's gotta be really hard to work as a copper in a city where you guys are so unappreciated. I thought about being a copper over a decade ago, then I came to my senses, had my "awakening" and thought no way, this job is most definitely not for me, especially in cities such as Chicongo. You coppers are the KHANGZ of the jungle !!!

Oh wait, Uber won't give her a dime.

Van driver in Baltimore freddy grey "murder" trial is acquitted of all charges. That's 2 1/2 strikes for that racist States Attorney Mosby. It will be six strikes at the conclusion of this criminal fiasco that she created.

You think Uber cares if a driver get robbed, shot, mugged, carjacked or killed??? Uber is making money one way or the other. No loss for them. There is a reason why cabbies don't go to the ghetto. Your life for cab fare. Not worth it.

Love how we say "stay fetal" but support this work. I think this perfectly illustrates how we all want to do the right thing and protect the real victims. We just don't know who the victim is often times when we get involved in the circus. Good work guys and gal, be safe and I hope the Uber driver makes a fast and full recovery!

Those ridiculous ads are on TV too. They make it sound like cabs never pick up black people and never go to the south and west sides. The number of robberies of cab drivers who thought they were just dropping off a fare on the south or west side shows that isn't true. UBER should work a little harder on their ads, like maybe leave out the fiction.

I wonder how many people have been murdered there? I know of several since 1970. People from all over: city folk, suburban folk in the hood looking to buy this and that, out of town motorists not smart enough to know do not gas up in the city and at least one employee I remember about five years ago. Don't go to the beef stand across the street. Same problem if the shitty food doesn't kill you first some asshole will stick you up while you are in the lot.
