Ethical Debate?

  • When Dallas police used a bomb-carrying robot to kill a sniper, they also kicked off an ethical debate about technology's use as a crime-fighting weapon.

In what appears to be an unprecedented tactic, police rigged a bomb-disposal robot to kill an armed suspect in the fatal shootings of five officers in Dallas. While there doesn't appear to be any hard data on the subject, security experts and law enforcement officials said they couldn't recall another time when police have deployed a robot with lethal intent.
The only discussion this should open up is, "Where's ours?" and "Can we check one out like a shotgun?" This isn't Skynet - these aren't autonomous machines running around wiping out John Connor and the Resistance. It's a tool under the direct control of the duly authorized agents of the State preventing the further loss of life by a terrorist. That he was killed is incidental, plus any rational human being doesn't really give a shit. That would exclude the a large portion of the media evidently.

It's amazing how a liberal will sacrifice the police and servicemens lives with no second thought. But oh, you better not kill some critter. It's an endangered species, don't you know. The only thing that should be endangered is that type of thought.

Anybody remember Wilson Goode, the Philadelphia mayor that authorized (ordered) the police to drop a bomb from a helicopter on a terrorist house in the '80s? It ended burning down the entire block. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Dallas PD did a great job in taking him out, it was best, in custody means a trial and the dept. and the city would have to relive it, dude is where he belongs, RIP to all officers in Dallas, you are heroes and heroes live forever.

There is a lot of confusion on this point, because in the random shooting by the deceased he may have himself detonated the device by shooting at or in the direction of the robot. If that was the case, then this falls into the category of the 1985 Philadelphia Aerial bombardment of the MOVE colony, which caused "Unintentional" death and major damage to an entire neighborhood. MOVE was a movement started by John Africa, a functionally illiterate, African American who convinced several people, including some Whites to live in his Commune. These people were organized around several issues including Police Brutality, and returning to a Hunter/Gatherer society.(This stuff is too outrageous to make up!) This Movement had some years earlier killed a Philadelphia police officer, so these people were no strangers to violence. And under the incompetent leadership of a Mayor who happened to be Black, the police using FBI explosives bombed MOVE from a helicopter and killed several adults and children and caused dozens of homes to be burned to the ground. But that was O.K. because the government of Philadelphia at the time was Black, so it was tolerated since it is like our Black on Black shootings and homicides. In any event: Stay Fetal, Stay Fetal; F%@k Rahm's "Chicago Values"! As the end of Obama's Presidency approaches and the Coronation of Queen Hillary draws nearer; things are going to get worse, much worse. Baby"G"

"...police rigged a bomb-disposal robot to kill an armed suspect..."

...a military veteran with a two-year accumulation of weapons and bomb-making materials at home, who was claiming to have IEDs, and who had just killed five police officers, and wounded seven more (plus one peaceful protester). Police negotiated with him for hours, engaged in another gun battle with him, and finally decided that no more policemen were going to die that evening. In an age of heavily-armed, deranged, radicalized terrorists who often have suicide vests that will wreck an airport or nightclub, this was a perfectly reasonable move by authorities.

...and if anything did go up, well, that lousy robot doesn't have a wife and kids waiting at home...

That "veteran" shooter got thrown out of even Afghanistan and sent home after six months, by the way, after multiple complaints of peculiar behavior and sexual harassment, including the theft of women's underwear. A dishonorable discharge recommendation was included, but somehow he skated on that one.

Authorized deadly force is just that. It doesn't matter what is used. At a tactics seminar not long after the Bank of America shootout in LA a local SWAT Sgt. asked the LAPD guy telling the story why they didn't used the commandeered armored truck to just ram the bad guy's car and run them over. Legal force is legal force.

There is no debate, and there is nothing unethical about the situation. The bad guy is dead, within the scope of the law, and the means to his death does not matter. It's not ethical or unethical, it's just what needs to be done. Just like there is nothing unethical about eating animals: animals are food and bad guys need to die, so liberals need to shut the fuck up or put on a uniform and see how their tactics work out for them.

Why is there even a question about the ethics of that decision at this point? We have been using drones to neutralize targets for a number of years now at various locations around the world. Is the robot any different than a drone? Both are guided to the target by humans, the "devices" used to neutralize the target are triggered by humans, etc. The only real difference is the means by which they reach their target. Didn't the Navy just launch a drone submarine hunter? What is a "suicide bomber" really - a human drone for some cause, someone who's emotions have been programmed to kill others. In a way the shooter in Dallas was a "drone", emotionally programmed to kill specific targets. Not a Skynet T1000 but close enough.

The two jobs every American thinks they know how to do

NFL quarterback. Why did he under throw or over throw it? Why didn't he hit the open guy? Why didn't he run it? Why didn't he throw it away? Why did he force it? Why did he call that audible?

Cop. Why did he stop me? Why doesn't he go after real criminals? Why is he picking on me? Why is he chasing that person? What do you mean I have to comply? Why don't they taze him? Why don't they shoot the gun out of his hand? Why don't they arrest that guy, he's the drug dealer? What do you mean I have to go to court?

The similarities between the occupations, both have to make split second decisions based on circumstances, experience and physical ability. Both take more criticism then is fair. Both are subject to injury which may have long term effects.

The differences, there are fewer than 100 NFL quarterbacks, and probably only fifteen that are really good performers. There are close to a million police officers. Of which well over 99pct are really good performers. Quarterbacks make millions, a cop might make a million over the course of his career. Quarterbacks have several large men protecting them, a helmet and pads. A cop has a partner and a radio to call in the Calvary which may be minutes away. This partner may range from 100-300 pounds in weight, and quite often they work alone. No quarterback has been attacked with a weapon, died in the line of duty or as far as I know had a paralyzing injury. We have over five hundred fallen stars in our department alone. No quarterback has ever been sued or charged criminally for what he does on the field, every encounter we have with the public could turn south. No athlete of any kind has ever been criticized by the Obama administration, our profession is hated and continuously criticized by said administration.

Lastly, one cannot take a test to become an NFL quarterback, the chances of becoming one are similar to winning the lottery. One can take the police test, 99pct of our critics would never have the courage to become the police, even though it is hardly an impossible dream like becoming a NFL quarterback. They are all cowards, hypocrites etc etc

Shooter knew enough not to position himself where a sniper team could get him -- that precision rifle, similarly under total control of a trained professional and only given the "green light" by a higher authority, is just another tool to be used to end violent aggression in extreme cases, when all other efforts have proven fruitless and the danger is worsening as time passes.

.338 out of a near-perfect rifle with the best telescopic sight available, or a dab of C-4 poked carefully around the corner on a stick under constant robot camera observation -- either way, offender neutralized and no further harm done to anyone. 5 officers dead and 7 more injured -- plus innocent bystanders -- is more than enough for one evening.

Pray for the dead and injured in Dallas, and their families, friends, and colleagues. DPD put a squad out in front of HQ and it's covered with so many blue ribbons and flowers and cards and notes, people stopping to light votive candles and pray quietly, that you can hardly see the vehicle.

God bless all who stopped by to pay respects. We -- all of us, everywhere -- did see this and do greatly appreciate it. You are in our hearts as well.
