So Now What?

Everyone, and we do mean everyone, ought to be working two man cars. Working alone is not an option for a while.

Station security needs to be evaluated immediately. These "open lobbies" and glass enclosures are an invitation to a bloodbath. Other departments across the state and nation talk to citizens through steel and bulletproof glass. You have to be buzzed into stations. Homeless people aren't sleeping in lobbies.

The Department needs to step up heavy weapon training - desk, street, everyone. Shotgun qualifications ought to be for everyone. Rifles for everyone, not just the chosen few youngsters. There need to be a couple of these weapons easily accessible in the station and at the desk 24/7.

Time to re-evaluate the types of jobs CPD responds to. The "community" needs to learn how to solve their non-criminal problems...without the police. It's what they're demanding anyway.

Since we've been ordered to stand down and ignore when the "protestors" block highways, downtown stores, public events, etc., and the Dallas parade proved itself a ripe environment for ambushing cops, it's time to re-evaluate the entire Special Events Section, as in getting out of it entirely. And get rid of the day-glo vests that pretty much make you an obvious target.

Same for the fixed posts. Parking in one spot invites an attack, like a half-stick of dynamite thrown at your car. Or a sniper in a gangway. Mission boxes restrict your movement, too, making patterns easier to spot or predict. (UPDATE): And outdoor roll calls announced days in advance and run through the aldercreatures' offices - anyone think those guys aren't passing info to the gangs?

That's just for starters - anything else?

UPDATE: thanks to the comment pointing out Outdoor Roll Calls.

I signed up for carbine training and didn't get the class....twice. Fuck this place. Might as well put Fire Dept on the side of the car, because I'm leaving the station, hitting the shady spot, and only coming out when called, or if someone calls for an assist, and then I'm going back. I wrote a parker the other day, parked in a no parking zone spot, right in front of the sign. Liberal-type suburban white bitch comes out says to me, "this is why the police have a bad name". I said to her, "somehow it's my fault you parked there?". It was the most gratifying $75 ticket ever. No respect at all. FTW.

You make sense. These changes go against the policies of our bright and shiny leaders.

Our leaders have theories and policies. Although they are complete failures, they will continue to follow the same failed policies. Otherwise they must admit THEY are the failures, and THEY are the problem.

Nothing will change. They cannot admit failure.

Nothing will change. Cops on days and afternoons will be 99. Fixed posts will not be discontinued. Shotguns? When was the last time someone saw a shotgun with ammo in the station, let alone have certification so as to sign one out? So count shotguns out. The dept brass don't care about shotgun certification or AR certification as they are afraid that there might be an accidental discharge which would stoke the violence waiting to erupt. And as for job assignments, the people of this not so great city have been trained, because of O.W. Wilson, to expect the cops to roll on every type of call. Realize the ambush of cops here does not have to happen in the hood, as the POS as so mobile now that a call could ring out in 016 and the unsuspecting cop(s) respond to a fusillade of gun fire only to have the shooters slip away back to the hood. Maintain situational awareness and back each other up, because we all know the clergy, the pols, the citizens and the brass ain't looking out for us.

You nailed it SCC! The only change I would make to your safety recommendations is we need to have a carbine qualified officer with the weapon slung and ready detailed in the station 24/7. It would take way too much time to run to the rifles and ready them. The situation may not even allow it God forbid. We need the advantage. Will our brass do this? It's simple. Our stations are a joke for security and it proves how the city feels about our safety. All our brass has said so far is everyone has to be two units. Big deal! It should have been that way long ago. How about protect our stations! How about carbine operators carry strapped as a passenger on patrol. Will Eddie allow us to protect ourselves better or does he have to wait for this scumbag Green guy to call him first.

Grew up 2 blocks from the old Summerdale station. If I was in there once was possibly even 1000 - no exaggeration. The stone gray concrete bdlg was halfway between Winnemac Pk & home. After little league games the water fountain across from the desk sergeant's counter, I musta gulped half of Lake Michigan out of.

And had the run of the day room too - when policemen weren't around of course. I was just 8-9-10 years old & the desk sergeant never once said a word while I would write on the chalkboards. Down the back stairs into the 2 bay garage, the sad stink of the dog cages up against the far wall STILL remains in my head - along w/ the doomed K9s'sad howls. Usually a paddy wagon parked inside & the vertical sliding garage doors wide open to the street.
ANYBODY could wander in & out.

Different world now much?. Be safe you coppers - the VAST majority of us out here still admire you and - are thankful for - the job you do.

We have a good number of trained and qualified carbine operators. Some have their own. There's probably at least one or two POs on every watch. Detail them inside 24/7 with the rifles at the ready. What's the big deal? Put the training to good use. Be proactive be prepared right Eddie?

Here's the problem SCC, cops don't care. We'll be hyper-vigilant for several days and then go back to the lackluster ways of old. For example, cops assigned now to station security barely do the job, not taking patrols around the bldg and lots, spending time on the internet instead, doing as little as possible. Many see it as a break from the street. This new anti-police era requires a change in mind-set. And that's the hardest thing to do.

Will someone tell the black community that criminal behavior is unacceptable in a civil society.
They apparently don't understand that concept.
Tell them that a civil society does not glorify criminal behavior.
Tell them that if an officer gives you a lawful order, by law you Must comply.
Tell them that if these criminals that they are protesting about had followed the officers direction they may still be alive.
Stop fighting the police.
It's pretty simple.

Every lager demostration should have 2 SWAT cars minimum on the perimeter to respond to a Dallas type assualt.
Every district should have a dedicated car with two rifels assinged to smaller protests, SWAT can't be everwhere, and patrol at ither times, along with other rifle qualified officers.

Carbine training should have slots for each district on a rotating basis, with a few slots for units.
Anyone new on the job recently out of the military shouldd be qualed after their field training.
Finally, beat guys first as they are most like the first on the scene of an active shooter.

I would bet that the public would be willing to help but the police unions would have a fit. I also recall that the police would be called to remove those protecting the recruiting stations so likewise would the police remove civilians protecting them?

I don't know but I would think the problem is not the police v. the mere civilians, but rather the idiots v. the civilian's police.

Forget shotguns, that's outdated. Carbines for everyone. Ballistic helmets and shields are a good investment, too. Station security is horrendous. Secured parking lots and metal detectors in the lobby are needed. To the guy complaining about rolling with fire on man down calls... Pick and choose your battles, kid. So many people hate us (many hate fire too). Man down could be from criminal means, could be a hostile crowd. Besides, it's an easy job to be tied down on. If I were the Supt., I would implement a job safety code along the line of job priority codes. It would go something like this, 1A (highest danger) no less than 4 cars responding ( Sgt., 2/2 man beat and a "carbine car", this car stands guard ...observing houses, buildings and unruly crowd for potential attacks and snipers. Next, dispatchers will be REQUIRED to go back as far as possible and before dispatching jobs, they must inform officer's of prior calls like mental disturbance, man with a gun ...etc It would also be a plan to go in Four deep instead of staggering in, a predetermined location to meet. Of course if I were Supt. I would hire more POLICE !! Pipe dream? perhaps, I'm just a lowly blue shirt scrub.

Stop all entitlements. This would initially have an increase in crime but eventually those who believe that the government is responsible for their cradle to grave existence would figure it out and find employment. The employment would mean that while they were working they would not be able to wreak havoc on the community. Crime reduced by 50%. Any early releases or probation would require the individual to hold down a 40 hour a week job as a condition of their sentence. Any violation and they get returned to 3 hots and a cot to finish their original sentence. Then once on parole they can again try to hold down a 40 hour a week job. Crime reduced by 50%. Truth is our governing bodies do not want to reduce crime and the accompanying violence and death. It provides a good shield for their crimes that simply go unnoticed.

So, now I am a former "real working copper" and I have listened to plenty of talk and rhetoric about how to fix this situation. I reject all notions that "our criminal justice system is biased" I live in an orderly neighborhood where delinquents don't drink and drug (thugging) in the open streets. My community has never tolerated that, and I bring that with me to work as it is an inherent core value that brings a quality of life to any neighborhood. Regardless of location. As a Peace officer I believe it is a primary function of patrol. There is not a "safe" neighborhood in Chicago that doesn't benefit from this.

I only have one question...What is a police officer to do, when confronted by a morally bankrupt, dysfunctional, drug fueled, alcohol laden resisting offender who was raised to "hate the "Poleece", and has no clue about what is legal or illegal (and states that he knows his rights) who happens to be black...?

As I wait for an answer, I am standing down for my own safety.....and concurrently, the homicide rate continues to increase....don't take too long to answer.

The typical normal response from the Wizards at 35th street on what to do to make us safe will either be days of meetings about it or absolutely nothing. If I were the Supt. I would have had an order out within hours puting an armed long gun operator detailed 24/7 in the stations with their sole duty being security. I'd request a list of qualified operators and where they are at. That's an easy one, we already have the guys qualified for it. 35th knows how vulnerable the stations are. I'd also put a long gun PO riding as a passenger strapped and ready on the street, in each district, on each watch. They would not be getting jobs, but responding to back up the units going to the jobs. How easy is that? This is the simplest and most senseable thing to immediately do. We already have the trained resources. Let's use them. How long will they wait to do something so simple?

Their sole purpose would be watching the other units back. Why the hell hasn't this simple order been put out? The brass are always calling for us to be "proactive " bla bla bla, but how about being proactive when it comes to our safety? We have the tools. Come on already.

The brass need to have at least a dozen more meetings before deciding what to do about our safety. In the final meeting they will decide to do nothing. Chicago has never been big on protecting it's POs. Kinda miss Jody Wiess. He had his faults but did the most for officer safety. Wiess or McCarthy would never talk to a guy like Jamal green either

An officer with a Carbine or shotgun at each public entrance to our very non secure stations.
No more allowing the lunatics and homeless to come in, hang out, babble and spread their diseases, and come and go as they please as if our workplace is their flophouse.

I'm not a cop but I did spend a couple years in Anbar Province. If I was a cop and knowing that veterans (Dallas shooter) are sympathizing with the BLM turds, I'd make damn sure my vehicle wasn't parked where a turd could attach a sticky bomb. There was a lot of that in the Sandbox and it can make a person paranoid as hell.

signed up for carbine training and didn't get the class....twice. FTW.

Oh no....not the no parking zone. She's right...why fuck with her when we have 100,000 gang members to fuck with. You scared?

FOP should demand that police officers are not assigned to mental , look at that college graduate that died because family only wanted to get him mental health treatment . Hire a fan ambulance , you stated he was threatening family
Gone means money for family
Obama did not know that racist black killed because he hated whitey and would kill as many white police
Said kid was troubled , no other opinion
But he knows police are racist , wow
He must not have received findings of Ferguson , Baltimore , officers did nothing wrong
Black criminals must quit resisting arrest , attempting to disarm police officers and committing aggravated battery on police officers . He must not know the latest convicted felon was armed with a gun , the incident in Minnesota the.subject had a gun on his lap while driving
Would his secret service detail do ? What about that female black killed while driving reckless in D.C . A few years ago , she was not armed and wanted to talk to him . Not much news or protests on that one .

All we ever hear is "we're changing this we're changing that all for the good of the community. We're restricting the police. We're monitoring the police. We're making new laws for the police. We're watching the police better. Etc. etc." question is.,..what will our brass change for the better to make us safe? Crickets.....We won't hold our breaths.

I'm thankful to be carbine qualified but it took over twenty FAILED requests and almost two years to get into the class! CPD needs to offer more officers the opportunity to be carbine trained cause it's only a matter of time before an ambush attack happens here in Chiraq!

I can't agree more about officer safety now then ever. I don't work for CPD. We have gone away with two man cars recently because it gives the illusion there are more officers. You thought Eddie was a POS. Our so called leader refuses to let us have two ofc squads as we had in the past. Even after the recent killings and NUMEROUS other ambushes in recent days. No confidence!

CFD here. Fire doesn't call for police unless necessary. EMS might call if the neighborhood is shady. But some guys want to call in as much resources as they can. I haven't asked for police except when necessary. I have released police at times when it probably wasn't prudent too. I do what I can to have your backs. Thanks for having ours.

On another note, that story about the Minnesota man has been debunked on one or more sites for what it's worth. The one I saw was a liberal site as I understand.

RE: The Carbine Program

You people dont understand the dynamics of the carbine program. The only reason it came into being was to show International Olympic bribe committee that Chicago was serious aboiut security

Well, the Olympics are gone. Daley hated guns, especially ARs.
And now they are a political issue. Rahm probably wants them gone totally but cant pull that off. So the program will die by attrition.

Outdoor roll calls have never served any useful purpose; they were (and still are) dog ad pony shows meant only to appease the city's alder people. The public knows that they are a half assed (at best) attempt to instill a false sense of security in the neighborhoods where they are still conducted. Can't imagine why this administration has dragged this back out.

Seriously?
That's ridiculous and a recipe for disaster.
Not to mention you'd have 2 overworked, highly stressed individuals at the desk.
I wonder if the ball less Capt. has a problem with all the full duty officers tucked away in the Commanders office?
Capt., you sound like a real tool.... go fuck yourself.

Rahm do you still have your fleet of extremely oversized tank vehicles the "red light get out of the way runners?" You may need them as mayhem and anarchy are running wild, it all started when you friend Barry said " police acted stupidly" and on and on from there! The only candidate that speaks for police taxpayers military law and order is Donald Trump! Let's hope he sends his justice departments in to investigate criminal Hillary and people that are and were around them right rahm?

Current LE thinking across the nation on station security is poor.

7/11/2016 09:05:00 AM

Question of Safety , why are some newly assigned Police Officers denied a locker in Police Stations . All stations are brand new and should have more than enough lockers for Police Officers assigned or detailed in . This is a Safety Issue , we lost an Officer that was disarmed while changing into his civilian clothes a few years ago . He was disarmed a murdered at 61st and Racine . May he rest in peace .
Another Big Safety Issue , Homeless sleeping in Police Station Lobbies , this is a big problem in age of terrorists and anti police movements .
This Must Stop . Open a Park District , not a Police Station .

Because they didn't put in enough lockers. Really. That's all there is to it. And, to add to it, when people get detailed out, they don't necessarily give up their locker.

I preferred the 10 Code system used by some other Large Departments.

Didn't need to encrypt the radios, just didn't publish the 10 Code to anyone that didn't work for the department that wasn't Sworn or a Dispatcher. And have a rule Violation to Hammer anyone that is caught letting it out to the public.

All the suburbanites in their 80k+ cars and SUV's that think nothing of parking in a Tow Zone or next to a Hydrant for a friggin' $5 coffee.

And the "do you know who the F#$% I am types" in certain areas of the City.

You know who on a Bike.
