Anyone See an Issue Here?

  • With hope of restoring trust in city government that erodes with “every bribe that’s taken, every kickback that is tendered,” a federal judge sentenced an ex-City Hall insider to 10 years in prison Monday for rigging Chicago’s red-light camera program.
  • A federal judge on Tuesday upheld Rod Blagojevich’s 14-year prison sentence on corruption counts, setting aside pleas for leniency by the former Illinois governor’s wife and daughters during his resentencing.
That was for essentially soliciting a bribe - no money ever changed hands. In the first story, the guy was actually dealing in large amounts of cash.

Then you have this:
  • Darwin Sorrells, of the 7500 block of South Wentworth Avenue, served three years in state prison for 2013 convictions of receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle and for unlawful use or possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. He was paroled in early February.

He was convicted in 2011 of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to five years on that charge. He also has felony convictions from 2007 for aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
That's what....five felonies since 2007? Violent felonies, four of them with illegally obtained weapons used on human beings. And he's currently up for murder with his brother - another felon.

While a briber gets 10 years and Blago rots for 14 years.

Might all the current outrage be better pointed another direction?

Every crooked pol should be in jail to rot. Fourteen years is way to o short. Every pol convicted of a criminal act involving malfeasance should go away for at least 20 years. The only way to end the political corruption cycle is to show these lying POS that their criminal conduct will not be tolerated. End of story.

As for laws with set sentencing guidelines, if the sentences aren't long enough for one's liking then by all means solicit the General Assembly to change the laws that are currently on the books.

More sensationalist reporting. Pffffffffft. There isn't a problem with widespread corruption in the Windy City. It's as over-reported as those few fabled and mythic episodes of substance abuse in the entertainment industry.

Wentworth is just another poor, dumb, innocent man caught in the system.
Besides, his crimes were probably all against his neighbors.
He never zcaused anyone in the Chicago Machine any pain or embarrassment.
Causing pain or embarrassment to the clouted clowns of the Chicago Machine is a real crime!
The others like robbery, rape, murder, and the like are merely ugly statistics to the Machine.

In Blago's case you have a former federal prosecutor and former head of both the Illinois Dept. of Law Enforcement and Illinois Dept of Revenue who was appointed to the bench by a Republican president. I've know him since his time with IDLE, and there isn't a straighter shooter (I've seen him on the range, too) and more stand-up guy than Jim Zagel.

We all know, that had the Feds not pulled the plug on the wire, this would have led all the way to the then new White House.

I can't believe people in law enforcement have an issue with sentencing guidelines actually being being followed.

But Toni Preckwinkle and most in the black community think the justice system must be overhauled because too many black men are in prison. So they must be lenient on all black men, even if that means those black criminals return to their community and kill other black people who are walking with their kids. How can they keep getting the black voters to vote for them otherwise. Those black aldermen, Toni Preckwinkle and the reverends can't lose their power or money. They choose the black criminals to fight for instead of the good citizens in their own community. And,the white politicians go along with it because they don't want to be called racist.

Something wrong here? Trying to sell a senate seat is worth a lot more than 14 years. Oh, by the way, that senate seat cast the deciding ballot on OBAMACARE. Demanding campaign contributions in exchange for helping to finance a childrens' hospital is worth more than 14 years.

So yes, something is wrong here. He should have gotten 2 life time sentences for being a narcissistic prick.

Apples and oranges. Fuck Blago. But what you say is true. The only real heavy time I think Ive seen anyone get is for shooting "at" us. I cant count the times they have plead after shooting a person and got peanuts. I mean actually shooting a person. This is your Congressional Black Caucus at work here, whom in their clout heavy wisdom have decided blacks shooting other blacks isnt important enough to house offenders for heavy time. Nor is carrying guns while riding dirty and gangbangering.

Hell a little prison time just upps your rep anyway. Boy 50 years of Chicago Liberalism has just ruined this place.

I'm sure every copper here hopes that Blago serves all 14 years, and this Bill guy does his 10. I'd imagine SCC's point is the disparity between a non-violent white collar crime getting 10 or 14 Federal years versus a 6-year-serve-3 State crime for violent offenses with a gun.

Blago got Heavy Time because he violated the "Democrat Party Code of Silence"! The Blue Code of Silence ain't shit compared to the Party Code of Silence. Remember Susan McDougal during Whitewater? She went to prison before she would snitch on Bill and Hillary. Add to the injustice, that Jesse Jr. Jr., got 18 months for actually stealing $750,000! Blago was made an example, for Talking Too Much. The Democrat Party controls the Judiciary, it is "Bigger than General Motors", as they said in Godfather 2!! Stay Fetal, Stay Fetal; Baby"G"

Q. How could the wire tap stop so soon? A. Because Obama and Rham were on it explaining that Valorie Jerret was getting g the job. Stop. Quit. Terminate. Destroy. Watergate. Rewind. Erase. Rewind some more. Erase again. Rewind farther back. Erase . Erase. Erase. That's how.

The false, destructive narrative of infinite "growth" and infinite population increase -- false because resources are finite.

OK, fill it up more and name it "New Syria" -- it already looks like this.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2015/03/05/starting-over-in-dearborn-michigan-the-arab-capital-of-north-america/

"By 2007 Metro Detroit, if defined as Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties had the United States's largest Arab American population, larger than that of Greater Los Angeles if that region was defined as Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties...As of 2000 the majority of Metro Detroit's Arabs are Lebanese, Palestinian, Yemeni, and Iraqi."

"Assyrians have a near monopoly over Detroit's grocery stores...mainly due to White flight as a result of the 1967 Detroit riot which caused many white business owners to leave Detroit. Taking advantage of the situation, Assyrians purchased their businesses at rock bottom prices....In 1972, there were 278 grocery stores in Detroit owned by Assyrians, and In the mid-1990s, Chaldeans owned 1,500 grocery stores in Detroit...Most of the customers of these stores are African-Americans...Violence has occurred at the stores, and business owners have installed bulletproof glass and obtained firearms to protect themselves...over 200 Chaldean business owners in Metro Detroit were murdered from the 1970s to 2012."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Middle_Eastern_people_in_Metro_Detroit

So the pattern repeats itself, and what the Chicago Tribune describes as the "permanent underclass" remains in place.

More Syrians aren't going to fix this.

Blago's sentence was a message to all politicians who might ever think of singing on their corrupt sponsors! It had nothing to do with his crimes and everything to do with preserving the current corrupt establiment. The credo of the establishment is do not sing if caught. Take it like a man. It's really mafia type thinking. Period. End of story.

The only coppers I ever heard saying Blago got a bum deal were the shady ones with something to hide themselves.

Bad guys always think they can get away with it, or that the time won't be too bad. They are right about the second one.

Repeat offenders repeat because the penalties are not harsh enough.

It really is that simple, so why do the politicians fight harsher sentences?

Blago reportedly without funds from The Children's Hospital while he demanded a $2 million dollar campaign donation making the children who were very sick have to suffer until the money was released to enable the hospital to buy medicines and supplies, etc. You are comparing Blago and a violent felon as if Blago was an innocent angel or only did a little harm. They both should have gotten 20 years, not either or!

One an offender reaches Stateville or Graham for intake & processing into The IDOC , the 5 year sentance automatically is cut in half unless it is a Class X felony once the offender reaches their assined "joint"
The inmate is given a educational assessment test , most of the offenders test scores are between 6 or a 7 on a 12 scale, with 12, meaning that possessing a high school graduate intelligence level, in my estimation 6 0% of all inmates throughout all Illinois correctional facilities, have about 6th or 7th grade education level and subsequently are assigned to mandatory "schooling"which takes place for about 3 or 4 hours in the morning and another group will go for 3 or 4 hours in the afternoon, Once a felon complees his/her GED requirements the inmate can receive 3 months of time off their sentence , now compound that with another 6 months of "good time" earned , after being at their assigned prison, without (having too many major) incident for 60-120 days a "enterprising"
pindividuals working in the kitchen, mowing lawns and cleaning up dorms or a cellhouses can earn a inmate receive another 90 days erased , going through Gateway drug treatment can net a offender45-90 days "Good Time" is the IDOC calculus, that makes a 5 year sentence, in reality a 2 year sentence, or in some cases 18 months

Everybody at CDOT knew Bills was dirty. They had to. It was the classic scam - let Bills get his beak wet with this one and you'll get the next and I'll get the next. Anybody who looked at the Redflex deal knew it was fixed.

Bills was a dumb ass. Redflex was an Australian company with an office in Arizona and one existing small contract in Arizona before this deal. With Chicago, they got the largest red light enforcement contract in the world. They beat a big gov contractor that is now part of Xerox. Wow. No one would be suspicious of that. He could have had his "cousin" set up a brokerage account in Asia or Australia and get paid in shares or cash.

Keep it offshore, get paid over time, whatever. Keep the $100k+ City of Chicago pension. Get a consulting gig after the gap year.

He is so dumb, he deserves to be in jail.
