OT - Looks like Emanuel wants to put a few hundred more City employees at risk. Now (announced on the last weekend in August, when everyone's on vacation) he's selling the Fleet Management complex at North and Throop and moving the operation to "Englewood' (even though it's not really Englewood).
There must be a huge tree somewhere just bleeding money for all this construction and all these frivolous projects.
And there must be a select group of clouted contractors getting drunk on champagne tonight, because they're getting a piece of the redevelopment pie at North and Throop.

Well, of course. That will bring much needed jobs to the neighborhood. Think how well the burglars will do when they can just walk home with their loot. Not to mention the blackmail the construction workers will have to pay to watch their cars while building the new facility.

Like you, I am quite disturbed by the continued acts of senseless violence affecting our community. And, to be clear I have spoken out about gun violence on a number of occasions. Unfortunately, what you are experiencing is representative of every neighborhood in Chicago and truly a reflection of a national issue that needs to be addressed. Whether it's the South Loop, Wicker Park, Bronzeville or Lawndale, all of our neighborhoods have been touched by violence.
The City of Chicago has some of the strongest gun safety laws in the country and strengthening those protections requires State and Federal legislation as the courts have limited the City's ability to increase gun safety. Despite this, the Chicago Police Department has seized over 4,500 guns this year alone, removing these dangerous tools from the streets. While this is commendable, much more needs to be done to stop the violence.
Regarding your specific suggestion, the city of Chicago does not have the power to implement mandatory minimum sentences. Only the State of Illinois can do so. You should contact your State Rep and Senator directly. Senator Kwame Raoul is working on a similar law right now.
I am certainly interested in any ideas that would help curb violence in Chicago. I have long advocated for additional police to patrol the streets. In addition, I have been working closely with the police department and community groups to provide up to date information and establish better, more positive relationships between the police and the residents they serve. At every townhall meeting, the District Commander or his Captain are there to address resident concerns, discuss crime patterns or positive outcomes to investigations. I have also taken a more holistic approach to curbing neighborhood violence by offering alternatives to violence. I have sponsored summer employment and job training programs for at-risk individuals, invested additional dollars in programming at neighborhood schools and secured jobs for residents at major projects across the ward including McCormick Place Headquarters Hotel and Event Center and the Rosenwald Courts Apartments.
While there is no single solution to the issue of violence, I hope that a broad based approach will have a positive effect. Certainly, advocating for stronger deterrents to gun proliferation, more progressive education funding, and greater job creation at the state and federal level is critical. I am also open to ideas, so if you have any suggestions on initiatives my office or the City can take to addresses this issue, please don't hesitate to contact me anytime.

Meanwhile, HeyJackass says 439 people have been shot and killed and 2,419 shot and wounded JUST THIS YEAR. And it's just so hard for people to accept that the persons shot by the police just might be armed and dangerous?!

You were never a detective. It's a death investigation until an autopsy can be performed by the medical examiner to determine cause of death. So calm down, it will be rule a homicide when the M.E. Is done.

So special Ed tells TRUMP to come to Chicago if he thinks that he can stop the violence. TRUMP should take this challenge but only by if he can make some changes. Special Ed would be the first dump. I can see TRUMP telling him, "your fired". Seriously the violence in Chicago will not get any better under democratic rule. RAHM needs to go before any kind of plan will work. Mr. TRUMP needs to be elected first and we can go from there.

When I was a Homicide Evidence Tech in the 80's had a friend on Lake County IN Homicide Unit. Gary had a man beat to death with 57 plus blows to the back of head with a hammer. They had run out of autopsy funds so the death was ruled a suicide.

It will be a homicide when the Chief decides to have it reclassified after the M.E. gives a cause of death, generally this is after the monthly/yearly totals are released.
You have 8th graders getting robbed in Lincoln Park at knife point. You have a 90 year old lady being dragged from her home. You have a guy walking down the alley in the south loop to get a coffee shot and killed. But there is no police shortage and all the new ACLU agreements and ISR are great. I forgot no evidence to show the ACLU agreement has anything to do with the spike in crime. Right. And why your at it keep stripping coppers before they get their due process because that really motivates the rest of us.
