Most Dangerous Block

  • The 4400 block of West Monroe on Chicago's West Side is a residential street of two-story buildings, senior citizens and a day care center.

It's also the city's most dangerous block of 2016, a stretch plagued by heroin, shootings and murder.

"I don't think it's safe here any time," said a landlord on the block, who asked that his name be withheld out of fear for this safety.
And Big Brained Special Ed has this one all figured out, too:
  • While the South Side spike in shootings is because of "disrespecting on social media," on the West Side there is a "generational drug problem," Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said. "It's more about drug turf."
Glad we have that all figured out. Guess who chimes in next?
  • Ald. Jason Ervin, whose 28th Ward covers Garfield Park, said those involved with drugs shouldn't get a pass from the criminal justice system.

"Where you find drugs, you are going to find violence," Ervin said. "There has been a laxer attitude of possession and delivery of narcotics. It has emboldened the climbing violence."
Drugs = Violence?

You mean drugs like......Cannabis? That pesky green leafy weed that you and your ilk just made into a ticket instead of an arrest? A ticket that takes a bit longer than an actual physical arrest used to take? And Ervin is surprised that violence follows the lack of enforcement?

Aren't these "nonviolent drug offenders" similar to the ones Obama is pardoning? Why bother arresting these people anymore, what's the point?

Yeah, it's weed that's the problem. Not the heroin, crack, or PCP, it's the weed. Alcohol alone is responsible for how many deaths a year and it's perfectly legal but you don't mention it. Obviously disagreeing with you on that particular point, SCC. Thanks for providing a space for discussion

At least one supervisor and a couple of POs in Organized Crime were shown the door because they suggested that there was a direct causal relation between drugs and violence and verbalized how our current methodology was inefficient and largely ineffective. Now the super says drugs are the problem.

I think all drugs should be legal maybe the government passes them out free. All you want. Except we dont resuscitate you.

All the efforts to stop drug use is focused on one small segment of society.

Most of us have no interest in drugs and wouldnt use them if we got them free.

Others dont use them because of possible legal ramifications

And others use them regardless of health or legal ramifications

All the efforts of law enforcement are directed at the second group.

Why? Who cares if someone wants to use drugs? Why is it the government's business?

Not excusing bad behavior.

But if drugs were legal and the costs were more reasonable there would be far less crime. Robberies theft from auto burglary etc.

Plus no more wars over territory.

Basically make it like booze. I actually think that after an initial spike, use would go down because drugs arent cool anymore, since theyre legal

This is my two cents worth

We all know what Garfield Park is and has been since the 70's with the exception the NW and UC social workers who contributed to the social destruction are long gone.

Do not sit there and explain the difference between the west side and south side. There is no difference. Same shit same unliveable neighborhoods and if you think differently you need to lay off the weed.

Weed. Yes, the pesky green leafy substance, a drug that is legal in 1/2 of states and is heading toward being legal as a recreation drug in many states. Will the new president instruct his justice department to crack down on legal marijuana? It will be interesting. Medical marijuana, I don't think so. But, recreational marijuana? Yes, i do think that the Justice department will put a stop to that.

You are an idiot. You are not the police so please shut the fuck up. If you are you are God help us all. Go to the area of Madison and Leamington in the 015th dist. Then go to the area of West End and Laporte. The head to Lamon and Hubbard, and Laramie and Adams. All spots where they sell weed, all areas where a shitload of shootings have been occurring this last year. Five shot just last week on Hubbard. Weed in itself may not make people violent, but the corners where it's sold can be very dangerous.

Suburbanites flow in and purchase drugs then flow out unimpeded. Junkies everywhere. Highest population of parolees in the state are on the west side. Police are in protective fetal mode there. Number one or two in homicides every year. Yet A/4 violent crimes detective division is closed down. All the ingredients for violence are there.

The inmates are running the asylum! Anyone watching? Anyone care?

You have no idea how to define or interpret culture. Daily prayers in Muslim countries is more cultural. Everybody from all walks of life that would be separate in other matters are subject to them.

You on the other hand make a blanket statement about a cultural issues across an entire race. The problem is Socrates that rich, middle class, working class and poor blacks don't have the same value system or same behavioral patters. Just like your southwest side billies would not be accepted by north shore white (let's not pretend).

I'm black. I have a couple degrees. My black wife has a degree. Neither of us are first generation college graduates. We have a ton of black married friends, multiple kids parented with one spouse. They all work and most of them have degrees or if not spent a few years in college. You don't know of that culture yet my life is surrounded by that culture...despite me growing up in 007 and my wife growing up in 025. You are 100% right, my friend.

Billions spent the war on drugs since the 1960's. Has it gotten any better? No.

Will legalization be perfect? No, but on balance it will probably be a whole lot better, for all the reasons you mentioned.

Most importantly, if after a couple years legalization does not work, WE CAN ALWAYS GO BACK.

What we are doing now is clearly not working. What do we have to lose?

My two cents worth.

This bears repeating for the narrow minds
and those whose lips tend to move when they read...

Doubly ikrsome when some liberal pin-head
chirps brightly about, "You're so different
from the others..."

It's a walk-away to keep from smacking them.

Of course you're judged as
"over-educated, angry and uppity" when you
don't co-sign, buy in or validate their bullshit.

How about leaving people alone and respectfully
letting them be to live their lives?

The progressives are wholly unable to do that.
obtrusion is their way of life.

Strange acting, funny thinking blacks
gives progressives the yips...

There's no reliable "template"
by which to war-game or pigeon-hole them.

For all the people who have never worked the west side (not saying I'm better or worse than anyone who hasn't I'm just saying) and say nobody has ever been shot over weed are talking out of their backsides. Weed spots are very lucrative. Especially because having a pack of weed only is only a ticket the pack workers are out there lined up to work. This makes armed robberies a common place. Sometimes people get shot during these robberies. Either way if you rip a spot off for a couple grand in money or product you can pretty much guarantee a stolen van full of juveniles is going to hit that leaf (pcp) and go drive down whatever block they think stole it and let some lead fly.

Now if weed is legally sold in a store no problems!

Yeah, and I'll bet all those victims were DEALERS as opposed to USERS.

Legalize it, let the government sell or regulate it. Dealers would then be put out of business, OVER NIGHT.

Dealers would have no more business, hence there would be nothing to fight about (at least drug related), hence no more turf wars, hence no more turf wars related violence.

Pretty simple, actually.

Our last shooting was in 1973 on an out of town visitor who was Wanted.

If anyone ever came into our town & tried to rob a store it is unlikely they would get out of the store alive & if so, they would get caught in the canyons.

Legalized cannabis has resulted in lower taxes & rebates. This will continue until the rest of our country follows in legalization.

Chicago is a great place to be from!
