Accountability?

  • Six Chicago Police officers have been suspended for giving the third-highest ranking member of the Chicago Fire Department favored treatment after the fire deputy crashed his city-owned SUV near Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park.

Police Supt. Eddie Johnson suspended all six officers for “improper processing and reporting procedures” in connection with the April 20, 2016 crash involving former Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas.
Three of the six are listed as supervisors, so "accountability" seems to be the new watchword.

No idea if this applies to shoplifting detectives or exam cheaters though.

I'm on the next sgts list, this is exactly the reason I'll be turning it down. Sgts getting disciplined for stuff like this and a Sgt getting fired for approving a TRR when he wasn't present for the incident and had no knowledge of anything that had transpired. Having to babysit the kids with less than 5 years on who act like they are in high school and all dress like they are invading Iraq. No thanks. I'll stick to being a detective, by far the best job going plus I only have 7 years left till I hit my 29.1. See ya.

Or how about this one SCC?

How many Certified Breath Techs have said
"Fukdis!" and let their certifications lapse
over the years?

Once upon a time in our long ago, you could
whistle for an officer who was a skilled and
practiced DUI writer and Certified Breath Tech.

On the watch?
In an adjoining district?
The LSD Radar Cars?
Hell... Back in the day there were E/Ts
on the watch you could whistle for.

ISP even?

Are these Officers being made to "feel the tingle"
because there was no one on the air that night
who was certified?

Just saying...

Now the flip-side is that a lot of Coppers shit-talked
the DUI writers and Breath Techs as misfits and such
who "nobody" wanted anything to do with.

Until...

>M/Fer sitting on the bumper of his crashed/upside-down
car sitting askew on top of two parked cars while crying
and rubbing the big-assed goose egg on his forehead
festooned with spiral-pattern windshield glass from
where he took a header/near ejection as the car did
a barrel-roll when he lost control<

The Coppers assigned to that goo-goo cluster were
gastiflabbered and gobsmacked as to which end to
begin at to unravel that fiasco...

Dude copped to sleeping at the light.
AND... It was NYE so some nearby
dirty m/fers did most likely drop
a bunch of shots at him just because he was there.

"Ossifer... All I saw wuz FIRE!"
Mmm-Hmmm... All those flying sparks didn't help much either.
5 cars wadded-up including his.

Surprised none of the locals came out
to do him in for hitting their cars.

Dude blew a .3xxx so no wonder he survived the crash.
Of course we were glad to help and get a menace off the road.

FWIW... We do hate to see Policemen bent over a rail
like this but it's the current condition and we hope they
come out of this ok.

If there were 3 white shirts on the scene, why did they not take charge of the crash site? Did the white shirts and the CFD bosses influence the investigation in any way? Did the driver refuse to do any field tests or did he perform the 3 tests and showed no signs of impairment? Why does everyone assume the 3 officers at the scene are negligent in their duty? Have you ever been at the scene of a incident that involved a exempt member? Hard to make the correct decisions with all of the pressure from the bosses. I sympathize with the three officers.

Never believed in squealing and ratting. But the level of competency in the Merit Supervisors needs to get their due, fair and square.
PO's probably taking the biggest hits for this event over what was intended to save a Merit CFD & CPD boss ass.
Theres an excellent chance this fiasco of an assignment didn't stop at the Lieutenant level either or at CFD and probably no emails or cellphones were examined between departments.
Nice to have an IAD that's thorough and considered competent isn't it?
If you don't know how to to the job, say so to the on scene supervisor and take the heat in the spot, not in court or IAD.
Merit bosses are laughing.

They screwed up, clearly. Blowing such a high BAC count so many hours after the crash, the man had to be reeking. 3 supervisors on the scene, 3 patrolmen, and no one was willing to make the proper decision as to what to do with this drunken city employee? I only hope that the supervisors involved took the heaviest suspension time for the sustained allegations. To the poster who claims they they will turn down their up-and-coming promotion to sergeant, you don't have to be afraid of being promoted, but by all means, if you are seriously not up to the responsibilities that go along with the position, then you've made the right decision. I'm glad that the command staff (including front line supervisors) are finally being held accountable for their actions/inactions. It's refreshing.

Same deal with me. I'll be passing when I get notified as I neither want to be a babysitter with chevrons in this day and age. On top of added responsibilities and this administrations willingness to whack supervisors for EVERY little misstep, I'm not gonna roll the dice with some entitlement generation kiddy cops with a few years on. I've worked too hard for too long to worry about some goof getting me jammed up because they aren't smart enough to act like adults. No thanks. I'm in a decent spot with virtually unlimited OT and I'm actually treated like.... an ADULT. And as far as those who will say "but think of the difference in pay and pension!" Well, I already make a lot more than a sergeant including the per diem stipend and selling back 200 hours. I've been maxed in DC since Day One and I have a shit ton of hours on the books (which I also don't feel like losing for some mopes who I have to log daily and hold their hands through simple tasks and duties). Sad part is that I always wanted to be a supervisor, but anyone with a brain can see that it's not all it's cracked up to be as of late. Not unless you're hooked into the 'Chicago Way' and land in a nice unit right outta sergeant school or soon thereafter. Kiss my ass Eddie Johnson.

If it all seems plausible, you always give your officer the benefit of the doubt...YOU WEREN"T THERE...If interviewing the offender and the officer(s), as far as you know, thats what happened. Surely everyone should know how to cover their own ass when an incident is handled other than the proper way, guided by a higher ranking officer's hand. Protect you, and your job. That is all.

No one is winning on this. But to all of you bitching about the supervisors...You're right. When they were CALLED to the scene they should have MADE the coppers do the DUI....

The question is, why didn't they do it before they got there? No one MADE them not write him....Nope...They are pussies who didn't want to hurt themselves or have themselves look like assholes..Instead, they called others to the scene to put the blame on someone else whether they cut him or charged him. FUCKING PUSSY MOVE. If you want to cut someone a break, do it. If you want to arrest someone, do it. Your a fucking adult...You didn't need help, you needed someone to put the blame on if it ever went bad because you're too big of pussies to do it alone...

Enjoy your days off...asshats...

The cops that covered up for the drunk driving firefighter were in the wrong, period. Whether they are held accountable is seperate from cheating scandals. Cheaters and shoplifters should be held accountable too. But the fact that there are cheaters and thieves does not excuse the cops that covered up for a drunk driver.

There was no drunk driver cover up. Time given out for no cameras and microphones.

-----------------------------
That's odd, because he blew over .08 hours after the incident. And without a camera or a mic, I still know a drunk driver when I see one. Like after he wrecks his car.

And to the person who stated:

"To the next boss listed above. I'll be all to happy to DUI your ass if I catch you drunk.

1/21/2017 05:15:00 PM"

You'll have a long fucking wait, because I don't drive drunk. That doesn't mean I'm "the next boss" - an analogy where you seem to think that there is a correlation between having some fucking sense and being a boss, and if a person exercised such sense they are some sort of prick. With Uber, Lyft, cabs, or taking turns being the DD, there is no excuse for driving drunk. You'd probably excuse the firefighter if he killed a car full of maids carpooling home from a shift of cleaning hotel rooms, but you're the same asshole that would demand letter of the law justice if he barreled into your kid being driven home from a friend's house by your wife. Guess what tough guy? You and every cop with your attitude are what's wrong with this department. And your years of behaving with zero accountability is why you're in the national spotlight and the embarrassment of the country. I know you live in a bubble where CPD is the be-all of policing, but you've apparently got it wrong. Do your fucking job right.

And let's be real - in all liklihood if you pulled me over, you'd have no fucking clue how to DUI me. What, are you going to call for a traffic car? But you won't have to worry about it, because while I'm far from a perfect human being I value the lives of the car full of maids or your family, neither of whom I know, enough not to get in my car and blow 2 times the limit 3 hours after I crash into them. I wouldn't do that to you or them.

And if I ever am a boss in this department, don't wonder why bosses target people like you. Your attitude sucks and you misrepresent all of the good cops that have to try to convince the world that not every cop is like you.

They didn't cover up for anyone. Professional drunks like the CFD schmuck know the game, only SFST of any worth is HGN and unless trained you can't administer. Suspensions handed out for camera/mic infractions.

You are so wrong! Probable cause is based on everything after the stop. At a high BAC, the driver will show signs of impairment just standing there, when walking, during a walk and turn. A trained officer will detect enough signs for probable cause. Every recruit since 1991 was trained in SFST and can use HGN as part of the SFST tests. He was not a professional drunk but a high ranking drunk that made a very quick secret phone call for help. Who interfered with the officer's investigation? I hope FOP does a vigorous defense of the 3 officers and we learn the truth.

Boy Im glad Im out of this shit. I saw a headline picture in the trib of the shoot em up in 012 yesterday. The little cop has probably made $10 m for the city in his career with his tickets and I bet they'd still stick it in his ass for a little mistake.
