Special Ed suffered an episode yesterday. The stories were running fast and furious before settling on a reaction to heart medications. But then it was revealed he was on the kidney transplant list:
- Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson on Friday confirmed he is on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.
The operation, not yet scheduled, would require him to be off work for three to five weeks, Johnson said. His need for a kidney transplant was first reported by the Sun-Times.
“I do not require dialysis, nor do I have diabetes,” Johnson said, adding that until he gets the transplant, “with the blessing of my doctors,” he will stay on the job.
It's been obvious for months that Special Ed isn't actually running the Department - Rahm is, despite all of Ed's protestations to the contrary. Ed is the accidental superintendent. He never applied for the job and was put in to appease a certain voting block. And he's been miserable ever since - endless protests, being forced to consort with Jamal, the DOJ report, the cheating scandal being used to control him, health issues, and pretty much taking the fall for Rahm's inability to run a police department. This is the perfect opportunity for him to "resign" for health reasons and walk away.
So who does Rahm pick next? The aldercreatures are going to demand another black supernintendo, seeing as how there were three white guys in a row. Rahm needs to pander for a while yet.So who's up? Rahm wants to be a pioneer. That points at Barb West. She's run a few different districts, served at all levels of IAD, Bureau Chief, and her most recent bureau absorbed the bullshit spot that was created for Granny Clampett. She's tied in with the west side reverends and Jason Ervin, so she's got the political pedigree.
On the other hand, there's Fred Waller. The same sort of district command history, Bureau stuff, a general reputation as capable, but wired-in hard. If we recall, he was a lieutenant for all of six weeks or so before being rocketed up to Commander and it's been smooth sailing since.
In the meantime, while Special Ed is a convenient target for our pointed criticisms of the Department, we will send our wishes for a speedy recovery.

The ironic thing about Special Ed needing a kidney is that his chances of getting one are better now because of his work as superintendent. The carnage in Chicago may provide him with a multitude of suitable replacement kidneys from the recently deceased gangbangers. I watched Channel Five news and I was astonished to hear that the news knew about Ed's kidney transplant before Ed spoke. It was like "Folks his problem is old news that we felt like never disclosing." I wish Ed the best but have my doubts on him getting a kidney in six weeks. Can matches be made that quick?

This job is hard on people, especially if you take the job seriously. I am retired and have seen the effects of being the police on many retired people, soon after leaving active policing. The health and emotional damage can be severe. I would encourage Johnson to retire now and save his health and his life. He would have a pension that most people can only dream about. I don't know the man, never worked with him or for him. I can surmise that he is a political puppet taking his marching orders from City Hall, but, hell, that went for all the superintendents. But, he seems likable and sincere. Qualified and competent? Well I will leave that to the active officers to decide. Retire now Johnson and save you life.

The schedule isn't contractual, if you can find me in the contract where it lists the start times show it. They are set by management and labor affairs. The 10 hour schedule is so "dreaded" that I'm enjoying day two of my 4 day weekend. And in a few months I'll be enjoying my 12 day Bantu furlough when I take it between my 4 day weekends. The 4 and 2 schedule sucks, 2 days off sucks, you're off two but still working 5 days in a week.

My father is on the kidney transplant list. Here's a heads up EJ, you won't be considered for a kidney till yours give out to the point where you need dialysis. And after that, good luck finding a match.

I have been a proud Aviation Officer assigned to O'Hare Airport for over a decade and would like to take a second to address my friends at C.P.D. and our current Aviation COMMISIONER REDDING about the FALSE belief that the majority of our Dept wish to be armed. As an ADULT with family responsibilities and dependent on my current income I'd like to express the reality that the MAJORITY of our dept has no interest whatsoever in being armed. To sit through our roll calls and hear the same core group of imbeciles constantly bad mouthing the C.P.D. and telling "War Stories" of the 10-50 they handled as a part time suburban law enforcement officer or the 10-10 the night before is symptamatic of the same immature, delusional and boorish behavior that caused them to be rejected by C.P.D. in the first place. To work hands on and assist the majority of the great guys at C.P.D. ,(and be paid handsomely,) has been a great experience and one I wish to continue. To hear a complete idiot with a Mohawk or a nitwit with a Ten Code license plate bad mouth hard working guys at the end of their 30 year career is just plain childish,wrong and very disrespectful. To my many friends at C.P. D. I can't express my thanks for behaving as adults and keeping the traveling public safe in these very dangerous times. By the way what is a 10-50 or 10-10 and just maybe try getting a life instead of more tattoos.

I have been a proud Aviation Officer assigned to O'Hare Airport for over a decade and would like to take a second to address my friends at C.P.D. and our current Aviation COMMISIONER REDDING about the FALSE belief that the majority of our Dept wish to be armed. As an ADULT with family responsibilities and dependent on my current income I'd like to express the reality that the MAJORITY of our dept has no interest whatsoever in being armed. To sit through our roll calls and hear the same core group of imbeciles constantly bad mouthing the C.P.D. and telling "War Stories" of the 10-50 they handled as a part time suburban law enforcement officer or the 10-10 the night before is symptamatic of the same immature, delusional and boorish behavior that caused them to be rejected by C.P.D. in the first place. To work hands on and assist the majority of the great guys at C.P.D. ,(and be paid handsomely,) has been a great experience and one I wish to continue. To hear a complete idiot with a Mohawk or a nitwit with a Ten Code license plate bad mouth hard working guys at the end of their 30 year career is just plain childish,wrong and very disrespectful. To my many friends at C.P. D. I can't express my thanks for behaving as adults and keeping the traveling public safe in these very dangerous times. I’ve known Sesso for a long time and have crossed paths with him in many different places throughout the years. He may not be the most personable guy around or buddies with everyone on the watch but he is a smart hard worker. I have seen him many times help out guys and make sure they don’t get themselves in trouble with stupid shit. He expects people to do their jobs, which many are not doing these days. He is a supervisor, its his job to make sure the job gets done. Maybe if people would get their faces away from their phones and candycrush and take pride in doing a good job he wouldn't have to "tow the company line". Too many coppers either don’t know what they are doing and or are afraid to do anything. Know the law, know the orders. Know what you can and are justified in doing. Yeah we can’t pull up and sweep a corner anymore but we can still be the police. You just need to know how to articulate and justify what you do, and understand we are constantly being watched. In my 20+ years it is usually the dogs or idiots doing most of the complaining. And yes Sesso worked at the academy for a while, and while he was there he tried to make changes and improve the academy. Some stuff is beyond the control of a Sgt or Lt.

The schedule isn't contractual, if you can find me in the contract where it lists the start times show it. They are set by management and labor affairs. The 10 hour schedule is so "dreaded" that I'm enjoying day two of my 4 day weekend. And in a few months I'll be enjoying my 12 day Bantu furlough when I take it between my 4 day weekends. The 4 and 2 schedule sucks, 2 days off sucks, you're off two but still working 5 days in a week.

Eddie might not be going anywhere. After Eddie gets his transplant he has to take his anti-rejection medications, $$$$$$. The first year of the transplant is the most demanding, constant tests checking for compatibility and rejection. Depending on what his financial position is, the transplant, medications and constant testing isn't fully covered by our insurance. He just might have to stay on for the insurance coverage vs the insurance he will receive after retirement.
Barb West is mean and vindictive. She is also very good at kissing ass to get herself noticed by upper exempt members. Many of us at ISD can't stand her or her boy Suber and wish for her to be demoted or hired by some west coast department far away. She is a Racist witch from hell !
Hey Aviation Cop, sounds like you have your shit together, but frankly you guys are there because our union-flop allowed our numbers to be depleted at the whim of a blow deputy puss head who promoted his underlings with no time on the job and the schemer who held the top spot before RAM took over.
Nothing against you personally but in these times both Airports, Mass Transit and the long disappeared Foot Men downtown need a revitalization and not with guys hanging on the job cause they don't want to listen to their wives bitching while sitting at home with the coffee and laptop, but with active eyes and feet ready to respond to the threat that thankfully has not reared it's ugly head in our city like it has in others.
Be safe and be armed, its the best thing since you have a badge and uniform.
It is very easy for people to say retire, but the truth is if you are a working copper and not a clock watching dogass who never did anything retiring really takes some thinking even if the job is changing, this job will certainly consume you and you need to takes car of yourself and enjoy your time away, work the OT if you need or want the money but not every day off. Retire when your mind tells you its time. I stayed until 63 and now 66, in good health and work a few part time things because I want to not have to.

Barb west is a trainwreck, she is what's wrong with race based entitlement. When does it end, when does Affirmative Action end? This department is so poorly run because of racial and clout based promotions. You want real change, try the old concept of the best person for the job. Remember the American dream, work hard and succeed. What exists now is an abomination.

Tell me when it was the best person for the job in Sweet Home Chicago. I've read a bit about Chicago history but never heard about this best person for the job stuff.
