Econ 101 Again

The Cook County Soda Tax is about to take effect, and so will another demonstration of Economics 101 to ignorant politicians.  Toni Prickwrinkle was on the news yesterday talking about how she had surveyed other places that a beverage tax had been implemented and "discovered" soda consumption was down, thereby improving the public's health. The trouble is, consumption wasn't down - people shopped elsewhere where the tax wasn't as onerous, but that doesn't fit her busybody government narrative.

It ties into a question we asked around a week ago - has anyone in the media even tried to research what effect the Gun and Ammo tax had on crime? Or how much was actually collected? Here's a story not getting much coverage:
  • When the City of Seattle passed a tax on all sales of guns and ammunition, the measure was hailed as a way to defray the rising costs of gun violence.

But since the tax took effect, those costs have only risen as gun violence in the city has surged. And the tax has apparently brought in much less than city leaders projected it would.

[...] Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess introduced the tax in 2015. It puts a $25 tax on every firearm sold in the city and up to 5 cents per round of ammunition. The measure easily passed and took effect January 1, 2016. Comparing the first five months of 2017 with the same period before the gun tax went into effect, reports of shots fired are up 13 percent, the number of people injured in shootings climbed 37 percent and gun deaths doubled, according to crime statistics from the Seattle Police Department.
That is almost exactly the same tax scheme Prickwrinkle put into effect - and the crime increases are similar, too. And how much revenue did it produce in Seattle?
  • In selling his gun tax to the public, Burgess predicted it would generate between $300,000 and $500,000 annually. The money would be used to study the root causes of gun violence in hopes of reducing the costs to taxpayers.

Seattle officials refuse to say how much the tax brought in the first year, only giving the number “under $200,000.” Gun rights groups have sued to get the exact amount.
So Prickwrinkle probably has a hole in her budget from over-estimating the "violence" tax and is about to have another one from the soda tax. Shortshanks did the same thing with his bottled water tax - sales plummeted in the city and skyrocketed in the suburbs, costing the city probable millions at a dime per.

And once again, the media isn't doing any sort of follow-up.

1. These taxes have nothing to do with what they purport. They're purely to raise revenue.

2. You can't depend on the media to report the above.

Buy outside the county.

THIS is what the tax covers. It's not just a 'soda pop' tax.

Bottled sweetened beverages (soda, sports drinks, flavored water, energy drinks, pre-made sweetened coffee and tea with less than 50% milk content, etc.) – the tax rate is $.01 per ounce of sweetened beverage and is calculated on the fluid ounces contained in the bottle or can

It's not about the revenue, it is and always has been about de facto gun registration. People won't go for an out right registration scheme, but through the tax, a paper trail is created, and preserved. Not only can they be used as a registration mechanism, they would also be considered public documents subject to foia. A publicly available, verified gun list identifying the addresses of . . . Guns

The tax on firearms and ammunition in Seattle hurt the couple of remaining gun stores inside the city limits. I've been in the suburbs since moving here and the best prices continue to be in the burbs. We also have a couple of pretty good sized gun shows monthly (and there is no gun show loophole-everyone gets background check on any transfers). Our CHL's are reasonably priced and timely and the process isn't overly onerous. Fair amount of internet sales here with the transfers at your local gun store/FFL. End of the day, we don't have a lot of "gun violence". Concealed carry goes back to the 80's here so you never know who is carrying. We also have open carry here...couple of groups love to go strapped to their local Starbucks to "exercise their 2nd Amendment rights". Usually ends up with a couple of nerds yapping at each other and videos on YouTube. Soda tax is another dumb idea they are trying. I'll stick to doing my shopping in the burbs and if I am thirsty in the city, I'll order an Old Style!!

The real problem here are public sector employees working for the county earn 35% more in pay and benefits then their private sector counterparts. And, it seems that many do not work in their job titles or their job description and way too many " assistant managers". It is a subtle form of patronage and deeply hidden within the country budget. The biggest offenders are the elected country officials. There was a job audit done a few years ago but was never released. It is time for another. Funny, during hard economic times private sector people do not get a raise and some are laid off. County employees are never effected in that way.

What I find strange about the soda "for health reasons" tax is that it doesn't apply to those on government assistance programs. So is that to say their health is exceptionally good and they don't need to be mothered by the politicians or is it to say we really don't give a fuck if they're healthy or not. I suspect the latter.

So, basically, the healthy folks who purchase a liter of Pepsi for breakfast or give their growing children a 12 ounce can of Coco-Cola for dinner (instead of water/milk) and end up being overweight can't be bothered paying this tax. Chicago values at their noblest!

How does Preckwinkle let him get away with that unless she expanded her budget too. These two make Todd Stroger and Mike Sheehan look like fiscal hawks and now the taxpayer in on the hook.

Also did you all see the IG report where Dart spent 39 million in overtime costs in 2014 because his officers don't show up to work for him. Do you really blame them.

This is how Dart treats his officers..

The Sad Death of Cook County Sheriff's officer Michael Raines. Sheriff's OPR/IAD harassed this officer despite him acting heroically in off duty shooting! Raines heroically took on two illegal aliens in shootout who had a combined 41 prior arrests!

Officer Michael Raines died of a fentanyl overdose after developing PTSD issues after acting heroically in off duty shooting saving multiple lives ...  Despite his heroic actions, the Sheriff's office/OPR investigated him for "using a handgun he did not qualify with" (a ridiculous minor infraction)..  Now after his death the Sheriff is covering his ass, calling Raines a hero, for going "above and beyond the call of duty". The Cook County Sheriff's office has the highest suicide rate in the nation and Dart continues to harass his employees.  Dart even bragged about it in a radio interview last month!

Officer Michael Raines.

Despite the lead Detective calling Raines actions heroic, OPR opened an investigation and reprimanded him!!

Two illegal aliens with a combined 41 arrests initiated the shootout with officer Raines and are now suing the County after OPR/Dart build a case for them falsely accusing Officer Raines of wrongdoing!

When will the "idiot politician's and useless media" begin to get the story straight? When you are "broke" adding taxes doesn't work. When people are fleeing the city, county, and state, adding taxes doesn't work. When business and jobs are leaving the city, county, and state, adding taxes doesn't work! The Dems get away with their bullshlt because people are either too dumb or too lazy to figure out the truth.

If there were a Truth in Tax Naming law---and there oughta be---the lastest outrageous Chicago property tax hike would be labeled the "Raise the Rents in Chicago by 10% Tax", which is what it is really doing. Somehow, renters don't think of themselves as property owners but they are, indirectly. When the city taxes bleed the homeowner dry, the homeowner is forced to pass the suffering on to those who rent from him. He's not a millionaire; he's just a guy--bus driver, cop, fireman, teacher---who bought a two-flat.

The soda tax should be billed as the "Put the Remaining Neighborhood Grocery Stores Out of Business Tax." Or, the "Gang-banger Job Creation Tax." Or the "Chicago Black Market Enablement tax"---something like that.

Soda tax to lower consumption of sugar-based drinks.......what a crock

This tax is added to almost ALL liquid beverages, at a penny per ounce.....so a 12 pack of Diet Coke (no sugar in it) adds $1.44 to the purchase price.....which, by the way, this tax is EXEMPT for all FOOD STAMP/SNAP card purchasers, so once again, it is ONLY the working taxpayer who gets socked in the wallet......

So, to the management of JEWEL FOODS, MARIANOS, BUTERA, et al- I won't be buying anything at your stores forevermore......since I have to buy my Diet Coke out of the county, so will I buy the rest of my groceries......

Good News! The Soda Tax will not apply to the poor suffering SNAP benefit recipients. It only applies to Taxpayers.

"The county initially projected the tax could bring in about $224 million a year. That was before officials decided — after receiving guidance from the state Department of Revenue — the tax won't apply to almost 900,000 Cook County residents who receive benefits from the federal food stamp program, officially known as the , or SNAP."

Would make a day of it with a movie ( no one shooting at the screen, texting or talking) and a nice lunch or dinner. Had neighbors that would take a van and load up for several people.

Wonder if the libs here will make it against the law to buy groceries in surrounding counties. I can see it now, a bureaucrat's dream! Another whole department of people to make up the laws and monitor them with a whole new Grocery Enforcement Team with roadblocks and new avenues of taxpayer shakedowns. Add a GET Agent at all tollbooths to search for out of county grocery contraband with immediate fines and impounding of vehicles. Another revenue stream to pocket and/or pour down some rathole.

As I got my coffee at a local Dunkin, I was informed that the price of my coffee would be going up July first because of th sugar tax. Since I don't get sugar in my coffee I asked how that would work. He replied That's a good question as he didn't have an answer. So it's not a soda tax. It's a sugary drink tax sold as a soda tax.

Speaking of liberal democrats, last year California passed a law banning/prohibiting travel to Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee (I think) & North Carolina because they're not LGBT friendly?!!! Doesn't that sound exactly like communism? The real face behind liberal democrats.

Don't apply it to the folks (and people) on SNAP. After all, it's not like that demographic is the most at risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood preasure, etc. Just add an additional tax on the tax payers to cover their medical expenses.

You ask any doctor what causes the health related issues--- if it is drinking too much soda? The will tell you no it is NOT!, the problem is that there is a dis function in a person cells that is the root problem. Diabetes pretty much is a person cells is not absorbing or is absorbing too much insulin. Hey democrats, you guys forgot to tax salt products you dumb fucks. But then again bring up one issue to combat an entirely different issue, here goes your tax money democrats. Continue to not solve problems

They put the soda tax last year in Philly. Only the govt thought themselves smarter by taxing the distributors. Imagine when the distributors passed the cost on to the end retailers. Results:

Beverage companies laid off 10-33% of employees. Stores laid off employees. And since tax is not at retail all the food stamp types had to pay the tax - not like Chicago where at retail LINK carders don't pay (FDA program rules).

Other than the poor its not hard to cross the bridge into NJ or head up to Chester to buy. Oh and tax revenue in way down from the effort .... but mayor stills protests the "greedy" distributors.

They'll all just head down to Will County or go to Indiana if they're closer to the border. Which leaves the 'untaxables' to continue to degrade what's left of Cook County. So glad we left Crookville years ago.

SNAP, LINK, whatever you call it are exempt of the plastic bag fee, too. They can't be responsible for bringing bags to the grocery stores ?

The law doesn't ban travel. It bans state government travel (i.e. spending money on it). California has collectively lost its mind. I'm not going to worry what they spend their non-existent money on.

Thanks for the clarification of that California law, didn't get to read the whole article.
Reference a big tax on firearms, couldn't that be considered an infringement and in direct violation of our Second Amendment rights?
Lawsuits need to be filed every time these dumb ass liberal democrats come up with a stupid idea. Money is what drives them.
They all want to be rich, like Hillary.

Wait until the 15 buck and hour crowd figures out they just lost a few hundred more jobs due to people not ordering soft drinks or going out of the county to eat.
I spoke to a guy who works for Coke in the city, they might also have layoffs, and they have good union jobs.

If the issue is "health," then why doesn't Chicago ban pizza parlors that deliver to certain minority neighborhoods plagued by obesity and diabetes. One national chain (with the initials PH) depends on the folks in Englewood and its equivalent in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Baton Rouge. The most popular pie - a large "meat lovers" slathered with garlic butter. Paid for (illegally) with EBT cards. Despite Michelle Obama's efforts, her peeps won't touch arugula. And raising taxes on everyone else won't stop people from eating high calorie foods, not exercising and not getting regular medical checkups.

I enjoy soda and think this tax is ridiculous. It is clear that the true purpose of this tax is to raise money to give to the pension program for overpaid state employees!

What really irritates me is that the people on food stamps/LINK cards are not subject to the tax. 1/6 of the people in Cook County have LINK cards, which seems completely outrageous as there is no way that 1/6 of the people in Cook County would be starving to death without them. However, if those people actually were subject to the tax, I bet that they would be outraged and perhaps they would think about that the next time they vote. Unfortunately since they are not subject to the tax, it really is not a concern of theirs, so they will continue to vote straight-party Democrat while the productive taxpaying members of society continue to get the shaft in Cook County.

I will simply stop drinking soda in Cook County and they won't get any tax revenue from me until this draconian law is repealed in a year or two. I will stick to drinking Crystal Light or Bai to get my caffeine fix for now.

I got tired of holding my nose and voting for the lesser evil, and no to all judges! It was like pissing in the wind, not a good outcome.
We registered as Republicans and found that the results of the elections were the same but we were spending less time in the polling place.
I liked the strange looks we got from the poll workers when we ask for a Republican ballot, and the thanks from the vote counters we get after leaving the place...
We no longer get those alien looks in our Republican suburb. The few democrats get them now!

Today, my 69 ounce liter of Coca-Cola is 99 cent.
If I purchase it on Friday, it'll be 99 cents, plus and additional 69 cent (?), plus a 10 % sales tax plus 7 cent for a plastic bag?
I can't even comprehend the total!
