What is the City's Share?
- Tiger Woods’ design firm on Wednesday released final designs for a multimillion-dollar plan to merge the Jackson Park and South Shore golf courses into PGA-caliber links, a vision met with cautious optimism as city officials presented the idea to South Side residents.
The city, Chicago Park District, TGR Design and Chicago Golf Alliance showcased the proposed course layout at the South Shore Cultural Center, the first in a series of public hearings to gather community feedback on the “South Lakefront Framework Plan,” a revamp that includes the course and the Obama Presidential Library.
What remains to be seen is how much the golf course project will cost — and who will foot the bill.
Oh, we have a whole bunch of ideas who will end up footing the bill:
- The Chicago Golf Alliance has said merging the courses will cost about $30 million, with $24 million coming from private donors.
But infrastructure improvements around the courses — including two new underpasses, at 67th Street and South Shore Drive, and at 66th Street and Jeffery Boulevard — could at least double that price tag, critics say, and it’s unclear where that money would come from.
Add in the usual Chicago cost "overruns" and certain parties getting their beaks wet, we're betting on yet again, Rahm finding a magical money tree that produces money only for pet projects and none for contractually obligated payments to assorted pension funds.

Could there be physical hazards for players, other than the normal game hazards which are a part of any golf course?
Oh yes, I want to go there to play golf. I see many young men out south, running around with irons. I'm still trying to figure out where their other clubs were, but hey, they must be golfers, right?
On a serious note, let's put a fancy golf course by the ghetto. I mean, who the hell can afford golf to begin with, let alone thugs and working class people that are just getting by, until they move from Illinois... Maybe they'll have some half off coupons or something? Sheeet.
Here we go again. Money for everything except the earned pension fund.
Great. Throw a ton of money at golf- a sport that is declining in popularity.
There is a pedestrian underpass already located at 66th & Jeffery Avenue but it is on the wrong side of the street and also has not been utilized for at least three years because it is flooded. Alderman Hairston informed me that when the City built it, ten years back, they did not realize that it was below the waterline of Lake Michigan.
The Woods group also wants the shoreline at South Shore Country Club Park rebuilt. This action will cost millions for a few elite golfers to not look at broken concrete and slag dumped there over the years. In the same time the shoreline between 46th to 51st is in dire shape and the Park District has told us for 20 years that this is a priority and will be fixed as soon as the funds become available. Thousands of people utilize the bike and running paths their daily.
If Obama gets his way where is the Mounted Unit going to be moved Too?
I bet they haven't figured in the cost of the machine gun bunkers yet.
WAITAMINUTE...What happens when it becomes necessary to close these underpasses if/when there is a spike in crime? How will people get to/from the golf course?
IGOTIT...They can build OVERpasses on top of the UNDERpasses.
Problem solved.
You're welcome.
Didn't both rahm and madigan pledge $100 million to the obama library when the site was being chosen?
Not many average citizens will be able to afford the fee to play. Lets see the average joe get a reasonable Tee time. Don,t forget that you have to go through the area to get home. Rahm will find private money for this and it will make big $$$$$$ for the owners and little for the city. Hey maybe a TEE OFF tax for all golfers. $2.00 tax fee?
Rahm's former campaign manager has been appointed the head honcho for this project because of his passion for "youth golf"
Translation: It's for the children!!
These public hearings are the usual sham. The closing of streets, lakefront and LSD access are already a done deal. Kenny construction is already gearing up.
Obama foundation has said they will not pay for required changes over a certain amount so what does that tell you?
I had a lot of great days at both golf courses, filled with cold beer and poor golfing.
Wow, 2 more underpasses for the poooliceeee to guard!!!!!!!
I'm so old that I can remember when they had to cut down all the bushes around the Jackson Park golf course to remove the hiding places used by the hit and run bandits (fore on the eighth hole could mean you lost your wallet, car keys, and sometimes you life).
"Hey Honey, put my AR-15 in the golf bag, I'm going to the South side course. I got my new Second Chance vest today".
(New PGA rules coming to a course near you.)
J.J.
Ask anyone who has played the Columbus Park course in Austin. The two-legged hazards that would steal anything they could carry added a new dimension to the game. My brother and his partner picked up three hours OT after grabbing one on the ninth hole stealing balls. Paid for their greens fees and beer.
If you play the Jackson Park golf course better put a 9mm next to your 9 iron.
This is all about real estate. When king Richie said we were going to get the Olympics and put it on the south side, many "in the know" snapped up a lot of property which is now virtually worthless. This is another scam to increase values so the right people can make their money back on the taxpayers dime. See also the Obama library and the LSD extension. All part of the same scam.
The same Chicago taxpayer chumps who paid nearly $200 Million a private school basketball arena for DePaul ..Chicago taxpayers paying through the nose for corrupt Dimms to take credit, pay off their friends, reverends ..Fr Faker ?
O/t ..Last weekend, Noticed supermarket shoppers in Burbank ,Oak Lawn ,Bedford Park cleaning out shelves of Sugar/Drinks ...
LOL.. Crook Count,IL should ask Philadelphia how their soda tax is working out .. DOWN 35-40%, under projections ..
Lets not forget there will be 200 employees for a place that only needs 20 and once they figure out the place cant sustain itself there will be a new golf tax .
That's why Rahm has his fancy little TIF slushy fund, to rain down money on things that would otherwise happen. And furthermore, it is easy for them to spend the money that way in the dark of night with no voting and minimal public disclosure.
"Throw a ton of money at golf- a sport that is declining in popularity."
It would be like using City dollars to build a basketball arena for a losing team like the De Paul Blue Demons.
Nobody would be stupid enough to do that. Right?
The absurdity is that South Shore was once a private country club and Jackson Park was one of the premier public courses in Illinois. Both courses were designed by Thomas Bendelow who was a significant golf architect.
The landscaping of the two courses declined under the mismanagement of the Chicago Park District, but are still somewhat enjoyable since private management(Billy Casper) was brought in to run the courses.
It would be cheaper to renovate and maintain the existing courses, but this whole scheme is a city sponsored money eating plot. It will be Millennium Park II if it is not stopped.
I worked at South Shore Country Club back in the early 70's. The surrounding neighborhood was a shit hole back then. Today it's 100 times worse. Who in their right mind would go anywhere in that neighborhood to play golf? WTF!

Yup! Just like throwing away 100s of millions on the DePaul basketball area on a team that never draws a crowd, sucks, and is completely off the sports radar. Also read the schools enrollment is way down. Money for everything but the police pension fund that we pay into every two weeks. How much money is it worth to invest in a strong and energized police force? Cause right now city hall is doing the opposite. If the pension fund was funded property it would energize the police a little bit.
Don't worry, when Tiger comes out of his latest stupor he'll run like hell.
Why hasn't the CPD sought a court order for the city to pay the pension contributions and just seize lumps of money like this before they can go to the insiders?
No more Northwest side sewer and water projects after 2017 for sure.
Infrastructure is ALL on Chicago, except maybe some will come from Com Ed, Peoples Gas and ATT, that's it.
The Park District portion of your property tax is minuscule compared to the Bd of Ed and City, so shitloads of room there to tack on a 50% increase, another loophole would be in the Chicago Library Funding portion, also a tiny taxation item that could skyrocket.
Never trust a Democrat to find someone else's money.
If the American people want a modest venue to honor a lazy, crooked, lying, albeit hate mongering clown,
I suggest they visit The Ringling Circus Museum in Florida. Even with a round trip ticket and admission 2x a year for the next 20 yrs, it will be cheaper than any Chicago overpromoted honor monument would cost in the long run.
I suspect a certain Irishman lurking in the background
on this deal: Bill Murray, who has a line of golf apparel.
T.W. finished as a golfer. Moving into branding and Civic
Shakedowns. Golf is on a serious decline in the U.S.
The only way this would work is to promote winter golf
And draw in worldwide freaks. You gotta charge more
In the winter for it to work.
You know what's embarrassing is that this city's crime is rampant! So these two projects that being the OBama library and the Tiger Woods golf course shouldn't even be built until this city gets their shit together. Would be nice if the media would do a survey on the street asking people if they would visit either place. It would be interesting .
Rahm will immediately hold press conferences/ribbon cutting photo-ops proclaiming how HE is helping 'the children' develop well-needed (free) golfing skills...
