No One Wants the Job

  • The city of Chicago announced Monday that applications for the next exam to become a Chicago police officer will open August 15.

    It's part of the city's plan to hire nearly 1,000 officers over the next two years.

    Officers who join the department make more than $72,000 a year after 18 months. They are also eligible for healthcare benefits, tuition reimbursement, clothing allowances and a retirement plan.
Yeah, about that benefits package:
  • eighteen months that they fire you without explanation for any infraction;
  • the healthcare benefits are rapidly eroding;
  • tuition reimbursement might not survive into the next Contract - Rahm is crying poor;
  • aldercreatures attacking the clothing allowances (negotiated in lieu of actual pay raises);
  • the retirement plan is shaky as shit;
And despite what Rahm says, you will be a political pawn for your entire career, not to mention be blamed for the last 70 years of failed social policy.

Policing as a career has been thoroughly
shit on by the media, the Alinskyites

The emphasis is on prosecuting, imprisoning
and ruining Policemen instead of prosecuting,
imprisoning and ruining hardened street criminals.

The only people applying to CPD are those who

It was once a great job. Now it is a paycheck with a City desperately hanging onto residency in order to recoup salaries through payroll deductions, taxation, fees, and fines. There are some municipalities that don't have residency and do just fine without the cops living there.

Giving the test four times in six years says a lot about the perception young people have of CPD. Many of these kids are not from Chicago, and when they see that residency requirement, their families say No. Minority kids with 4 yr. degrees go to Federal law enforcement. Granted there are a few FBI agents who live in Chicago, but the ones with school aged kids prefer Naperville and other burbs. Add to all this the Arbitrary Administration of the polygraph, and lawsuits are bound to follow. Instead of wasting People/Folks time, the City should set a standard for when and how much weed or other drugs is acceptable. I have heard of some people not being hired because they smoked weed 5 yrs. ago. Is 5 yrs. the standard, or is it 6 yrs, 7, 8? If the standard is Arbitrary or based on a formula that involves race; we the taxpayers will once again be paying for the City's incompetence. And what about that psychological testing? How are we missing suicidal recruits? One thing is for sure, nobody should be hired if they did as many drugs as the last President. Stay safe, be careful, because Rahm is aiming at your backs. Lower the bar further.

Accept all candidates with no more than two felony convictions with the IQ scores of borderline morons. No more MMPI psychological testing or evaluations based on same. After all, most elected city and county officials would fail the MMPI psychopathia key as well as sophisticated "ethics" questionnaires.

Accept all "merit" candidates. Under no circumstances, define criteria for "merit" appointments. Exclude all of above as exempt from FOIA demands as confidential and proprietary information.

Provide free malt liquor and cigarettes to encourage all "low information" voters to get to the polls.

Celebrate Diversity!

I would not take this job if I had to do it all over again...

Say what you want about the "millennial" generation, I can see that they look before they leap. There are greener pastures out there. I came on this job, and was sold a bill of half truths, and outright lies. It became worse over the years. The residency rule is enough to turn away any decent applicant from the suburbs.

It will take at least 20 years to right this ship, if the political will to do so ever comes to exist. Otherwise, we are headed down a road that looks a lot like Detroit in the turn of the last century...High taxes causing people and business to leave, financial disaster, and poorly run government. And they will all blame it on the pension crisis!

The rats will be off the ship before it capsizes, and there will be no one left to blame. Only the rich will be left in Chicago to rule over the few and struggling poor who are too naïve to leave.

Low pay, no benefits and no pensions. Why do you think we are here and stay! If the grass was greener out there we would be there. Bitch all you want but don't see anyone quiting before retiring. Many are leaving that is true,and many are not taking the job when called! On another topic off-topic for a minute just an observation. First white Caucasian people are now 47.4% of the population in Chicago so since they are the "minority" when do the discounts start? Was at the academy recently many "people of color" in classes as recruits which is fine, but shouldn't the minority white population be entitled to minority benefits? Why for example is loyola university giving free scholarships valued at over $50,000 per year to illegals who claim minority that would be a total lie and besides that they are criminals here illegally!

Next rahm your so into helping chicagos minorities and others answer this why are so many cta iron-workers who make well over $200,000 per year living in Indiana and the far burbs of Chicago? Then we have many cranes downtown building I took a bicycle ride around many just observing mostly white (Minority in Chicago) working, but they looking at workers license plates many Indiana,and none with city stickers all living in suburbs! Went into starbucks off Michigan Av asked some of the guys at a table if they live in the city (These are laborers on the projects downtown) they said "nope don't live here and never would!"

That being said why rahm cannot you not have the companies hire city residents? You say your all for helping out the poor, why not say go into englewood,the westside with laborer jobs which pay from $30-$55 per hour plus union benefits and offer them to these people? The cta has many black employees, but yet the iron workers have maybe a handful getting these great paying jobs, guess the contractors pay you mayor and the 50 big league campaign donation style! OK alderman you read this blog everyone this is the "go to" place for you to get great information your turn are you going to call him out or are you scared?

If you have 20 yrs and are at least 50 yrs old, you can retire. Your pension will be 50% of your last 4 years of salary. Health care is another issue. Used to be guaranteed until 65, when you hit Medicare, but that's all over. I think that issue is still being dealt with in the courts. But look on the bright side, I hear that the city will want to raise the mandatory retirement age from 63 to 67 with this current contract. That will give you 4 more years to save for retirement. You'll need it because by that time the city will have taken away EVERYTHING except your salary.

What oh what will democrats do when nobody answers the call to "enforce" their ummm "democratic dictation"? And what will they do when those who answered the phishing call prior but now refuse to do anything but remain "fetal"?

Well, they will do what they are doing, blame the COPS for doing what those democrats told them to do, hanging cops out to dry left and right up and down at every turn.

We told you so. For decades we told you that your unions supporting democrats wasn't the correct thing to be doing, but you decided to brush off our warnings, for those paycheck promises and pension promises. And you also tracked toward ignoring rights you are tasked with protecting and defending all the while.

We are still trying to tell you things, warn you, share knowledge with you, and far too many of you are still ignoring us. That is what brought you to this train wreck now, so why continue it? Stop listening to the "community" and start listening to the community. Turn away from Rahm and his democrats, instead turning toward the founding and framing documents and First Principles that you are supposed to be protecting and defending. You might just be surprised at what happens when you do so.

It's not nobody wants the job, Rahm just doesn't like most of the applicants that biologically fail to meet his idea of city representation.
Besides flooding the south and west sides with advertisements, this new exam could be used for an immigration refugee propaganda stunt too.
Once upon a time it was the best job you could find in Illinois, but now it's a bit difficult to get if you're not a community representative.
I won't bash anyone for wanting or taking The Job because it's only about the 1st and 16th.

All interested persons of less than required representation should be encouraged to a chance, you could wind up behind a desk for 29 & a day or make a decent living driving around taking reports all day or night.
Do your time on a shit watch in a shit district and eventually move on.
Idiot bosses are a dime a dozen and plenty of them citywide, you won't escape that.

If you have any skills, mechanical, carpentry, and if your family has a business in any of the trades; that's where you should be focusing. The risks now out weigh the pay and making money like $72,000 with little guarantee's, not worth it. You not only have to worry about getting psychically injured, but you have to be looking over shoulder for the politicians who are gunning for you. My two cents, if you have a 2yrs Associate Degree, go back to school and get the BA. If you can't get the police thing out of your system, try a smaller police department or County PD outside of Cook. The best Fed law enforcement jobs are ATF, Customs, US Marshall's Office. If you can speak a couple of languages look at the CIA, their always looking for people who now other cultures and languages, thereby, being able to blend in and gather info. Lastly, whatever you decide, go and get your concealed to carry and learn the weapon you're going to carry and when to use it. This is exactly what I told my two nephews and to avoid the FBI at all cost..........

Why do they have trouble getting people to join this department?
Add the following thought to the list of reasons on this post by our members.
When a member is 'mentioned or accused' in any malfeasance, however slight or unconfirmed, the liberals (most politicians, BLM, public, ACLU, media et al) all want them stripped or fired IMMEDIATELY and decry the option of being placed on desk or similar duty pending the outcome.
How come Northwestern, aka Commie U, didn't IMMEDIATELY fire their esteemed professor who is obviously involved in brutally stabbing and cutting out his groin area of a live-in friend/partner. Instead, today on WGN, (We Generate Negativity) 8 August, they ran with a 'Commie U' official who praised the professor indicating, with superlatives, what a great person he is and indicated further that they already have similar 'letters of support' from their staff on his behalf. That fits right in with using their students as whores, with the main pimp a NW professor who again was not IMMEDIATELY fired in their bogus wrongful conviction debacle brought to light by our own Marty Preib. Is the seriousness of 'their' offenses not deserving of the immediacy of their termination as with our members? I guess false imprisonment, contempt, corruption, prostitution, murder, castration, illegal flight to avoid prosecution, etc are not grounds for IMMEDIATE termination, but signing off on a report for example merely because it requires a supervisors signature indicating completion and not on-scene presence or personal knowledge requires that they be fired?
Law enforcement is (still) a noble profession despite the aforementioned who work daily at making everything, the 'Police Fault.' Those that have and still work the job, hold your head high for the work that you do, but keep looking over your shoulder for those that are out there to stab you in the back.
God Bless and watch over all our fellow first responders.
AMEN.

Fran S. asked S(t)upEd today about recruit numbers & mumbles didn't have an answer...but these are the REAL numbers on the eligibility list just started (I work at HQ in HR):

1. Actual "good" candidates (these candidates have the age & education requirement at the bare minimum) who passed, to be called up for further testing after the initial exam in April 2017: 6,700 candidates

2. Of those 6,700, a little more than 1/2 (3,500) will be excluded for Marijuana usage, other Narcotics usage, poor or reckless driving history, debt or credit issues, arrest history & general moral character or background issues etc.

3. Of the balance left, roughly 3,200 candidates, almost a little more than 1/2 of these candidates will fail the investigative background, drug test and/or POWER test during the various stages of the process & will be excluded at some point or not show up for further testing;

4. Of the remaining 1600 candidates, roughly 1/3 will fail the polygraph for various reasons but mostly for "admissions" in their background that were not revealed during the process;

5. Of the remaining 1100, 300 will fail the psych test (although CPD has enacted an appeal process for the psych test on this new exam after the Honorable Ann Burke's driver failed his psych test a few months back...hmmm, did the folks at HQ report all the unethical communications, phone calls & emails to the IG on behalf of this assh*le. We couldn't change the psych rules for our men & women in the armed forces who have a "higher than normal" failure rate but we'll change it for Burke's driver - only the best & brightest right Barb-bring-my-pillow-to-work-West),

6. By the time all 6700 candidates are processed for the most recent (April 2017) test the Department will be LUCKY if they have 800 "qualified" candidates for the position of police officer. Of those, only 650 (est.) will accept the position and that is not keeping up with attrition. Nor is that 650 the best & brightest.

Also, HR held a round table last month to go over "disqualified" candidates to see if they can somehow be made into "good" candidates - this shock wave will be felt in a few years my friends.

The Department will be out of candidates TO SEND TO THE ACADEMY from the most current list by December 2017, hence the need for a new test (given in a frenzy).

The department has had a goal of 100 candidates per month since the mayor's announcement of increasing officers within the department. This goal has only been met once in eight months and HR will be lucky if they meet that quota anytime soon again.

Also, the current April numbers are reflective of individuals/candidates who have taken prior (multiple) tests. So, not truly new candidates but recycling old candidates who were most likely disqualified but have not been informed as of yet BECAUSE Investigations IS SITTING ON THOUSANDS OF DISQUALIFICATION FILES because they don't have the manpower to properly work up the file just in case the applicant appeals to the HEARING REVIEW BOARD (HRB).

Ask the question, How many candidates from 2013 & 2016 are still pending a background evaluation SINCE WE ARE INTO THE 2017 test? How many are eligle/ineligible but have not been notified? Of those, how many are on the current list being evaluated (April 2017) who will also be ineligible?

Side Note: African American & Caucasian candidates taking the test have dropped below previous tests but Hispanic candidates have increased drastically.

Food for thought...for any reporter who's reading and isn't lunching on the bullshit the Department or city Hall is feeding them.

Appeals court: Pension fund has right to $11M, potential tax hike from Harvey for underpaying pensions
by Jonathan Bilyk | Aug. 7, 2017, 5:19pm

While leaving it to the elected leaders of the city of Harvey to figure how much tax to levy to get the money they need from property tax payers, a state appeals court panel has ruled the south suburban city’s pension fund is on the brink of default, and, thus, the pension board for the city’s firefighters has a valid claim under state law to force the city to cough up nearly $11 million in unpaid and underpaid pension fund contributions.

On Aug. 4, a three justice panel of the Illinois First District Appellate Court in Chicago determined the city’s mayor and council for years had improperly “abused” their “discretionary powers” under state law to fund the city’s firefighter pension fund, leaving the fund on the brink of default and bankruptcy.

This, the appeals justices said, meant a Cook County judge had been correct in determining past Illinois legal precedents, which had generally found courts can’t order cities or other governments to pay certain amounts to fund public worker pensions, don’t apply in Harvey’s case, and the judge was within her rights to order the city to pay the amount it had allegedly underfunded – regardless of the city’s claims it had not been able to do so.

If law enforcement is your calling join the Feds. The Chicago Police is a dead-end career. No matter how qualified, intelligent or capable you are there's a very good chance that you'll be pushing a Beat or Tac car for the next 30 years. The makeup of the CPD will look like the Post Office or the Chicago Teacher's Union in the next 10 years.

If you're reading this and you're thinking of taking the test, DON'T. There are myriad policing opportunities out there that don't expose you to the chronic problems facing CPD. This is a period in the Department that supervisors and up will not hesitate to make an example of you. Even if you are well intended, you are risking everything. The statements real coppers are making about liability and lack of Departmental backing are valid. This was a great job. It isn't now.

There are very few if any police that stayed on or took this job if they had an opportunity to go on the CFD I know of three in the last few years that left the CPD to go to CFD and a few more who passed on CPD because they knew they were in the next class or two of the CFD
Fire doesn't hire as many tests are few and far between and its almost a closed shop Once again the CPD gets criticized for po's kids getting on. Worse and happens all the time but never a word about the CFD

Thousands will apply because those who do will never find a job paying 72,000 in 18 months and after a while be making over 100 grand with overtime. Private sector is no better even worse. Low pay, no benefits and no pensions. Why do you think we are here and stay! If the grass was greener out there we would be there. Bitch all you want but don't see anyone quiting before retiring. In fact those who end up getting fired fight to get back on.

Thank the heavens he was hired by a suburb and he is satisfied. And, take it to the bank, they jerked him around. Not because they like jerking people around, but because they cannot level with people. Yes, he would be able to take another test and, actually, he could take all the tests until he aged out, but there is no chance he would ever be hired.

Past practice has worked to their advantage so the city will stay with it. They'll promote from the lowest rank first. They'll promote Sgt's then Lt's and likely at the same time so they're all at the academy at the same time. They'll all graduate along with recruits. Every rank will be short of budgeted manpower even after all the promotions. It's a budgetary shell game. Capt's are a bit of an anomaly though where they post a list, train a certain number in the academy, then promote only a handful of those at a time. The Capt "interviews" are being held now and are scheduled to go into Sept. This goes along with the long held rumor that there will be Capt's as W/C's. No more WOL's or DSS.

Best time to come one this job is now. You'll be sent to a nicer district (because new cops in the ghetto is bad according to the media), no need to do anything physically anymore, just cut paper and advise warrant. The department caters to the new kids crying that they need 2nd watch with a specific day off group, unlike back in they day when you weren't even allowed to look at a boss.

Sign up, take the test, demand that you get hired regardless of what those psych results say. Just keep paying into the pension fund kiddo.

8/08/2017 10:14:00 AM

That's almost exactly what I told my two kids, adding we have relatives connected to law firms and one of the kids past the law entrance examine. The other knows building construction and he and a few of this friends have built three garages this year and want to expand. So, I sat down with bought and told them, you're not me, a dumb cop, go and do something else. This job is nothing like your grandfather, your uncles or me had experienced. They killed the culture and it's rigged to fuck you real good. Both have their Carry Permits, belong to the NRA, hunt, and enjoy the shooting sports. If it was another day, both would have been an asset to law enforcement, with or without my blessing.

What is wrong with you? Talking all this shit. 12,000 retired police collecting their pensions now reached their retirement. Most of my friends remained married and kept their friends. Read the age of retirees from the pension board. Guys in their , bunch in their 80's and you would be surprised at the number in their 70's. Doesn't appear they lost 10 years of life. In fact pension fund says retirees living longer and it a strain on the pension fund
I agree that these are some pitfalls of the job, but they can be dealt with.

I would suggest to People wanting to become the Police: go with the Feds,State Police , or a small Municipality. Large Cities have a certain group of citizens that the Political class want to curry favor with. If push comes to shove, you, the P.O., will find yourself dispensable , and I mean your life will be ruined. Just look at the stories here in Chicago.The most recent indictment of the Sgt., Detective and the P.O. who had the paper on the McDonald debacle! He wrote the paper with the facts known to him at the time!Just like every other report taken and for Political reasons found himself in the trick bag!

Better yet , go with Customs and Immigration , they have the Gun, Badge, handcuffs( all the trappings of the Police) but I never observed them do any Police work in the 12 yrs I worked at the Airport.

in fairness, $72k a year for what amounts to just barely over an entry level job is nothing to sneeze at.

its not perfect but there are not a lot of jobs where you can get hired and a few years later be making that kind of money. and even with some minor erosion of benefits they still far exceed what is readily available in the private sector.
