Wrong Turn?

This could have been worse - especially after the recent vehicle deaths overseas:
  • A man was charged Friday after the Chicago Police Department Bomb Squad was called to O'Hare International Airport as a precaution to investigate a semi truck parked outside Terminal 3.

Alexander Lavrentyev, 35, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of reckless conduct and traffic citations, Chicago police said.

Officers observed an unattended semi parked in an unauthorized area at about 3:50 a.m. Friday, authorities said. They could not find the driver. There was a heavy police presence in the departure area during the morning rush., but the investigation did not affect airport operations.

Police had the truck towed to another location. The vehicle was eventually cleared after "no dangerous materials were found," police said.
In this day and age, how is a semi-tractor trailer even allowed near a passenger terminal? Should there be numerous warning signs? Diversion ramps? Police presence? Maybe a low bridge as a final barricade to stop a truck outside of what we'd term a "sensitive" area? It's not like you couldn't fill a truck with ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. Or 20 guys with machetes, vests and weaponry.

The Law – 720 ILCS 5/12-5. A person commits Reckless Conduct when he or she, by any means lawful or unlawful, recklessly performs an act or acts that: Causes bodily harm to or endangers the safety of another person; or. Causes great bodily harm or permanent disability or disfigurement to another person.

Why are they charging him for parking violation no crime how did he endanger the safety of another person or cause bodily harm?

What are we going to do call the bomb squad for every parked truck? Poor driver is getting railroaded parking violation at most not reckless conduct. Foreign or out of state drivers can easily make a wrong turn onto 190.

Well, O'Hare is part of the sanctuary city. A person can drive revoked or suspended, park their vehicle anywhere they want and not worry about prosecution because Foxxx has stated she is not about to have her "crew" enforce traffic laws either. Besides, when something catastrophic happens Queen Sugar and King Snowflake will just blame it on the lack of funds from government.

If you are assigned to the airport, you should be embarrassed. Take your job serious or retire already. Too many connected people entrusted with the public safety of our airports. Too many 60 year old "I can't wait to retire" patrolmen and too many "I am too scared to work a beat car" patrolmen hiding within the airport units. I've been to the airport many times and see more presence by the TSA and parking enforcement agents than CPD. Occasionally I see officers hanging out just past the tsa checkpoint. Very sad. Nothing against riding out your final years on the department there, but the safety of the lives of many people including police families are entrusted to you officers. Just like mass transit, please take your jobs serious or step aside and let someone else do it for you. Wear the badge with pride and do what you are paid to do! Serve and protect!

made to the restaurant and other vendors there. Most are made during the night to
early morning when the arrivals are very slop and there aren't a lot of people there.

But I do agree that something needs to be done. Maybe all trucks checked BEFORE
they are allowed to proceed into the airport

Face it, the city & surroundings are ripe for an incident. Various authorities continuously mouth meaningless words of assurance that sufficient security measures are in place. And then it happens. And once the carnage is cleaned up those same authorities appear again telling us the same thing, except this time they really really mean it.

It's all BS.

Another example of Chicago's "Illusion" of security and a police presence! As with the CTA, cameras are NOT being monitored 24/7, and they will not Stop motivated offenders. I am confident, that the shooting this week on the CTA, downtown, was not viewed in Real Time by the CTA personnel monitoring those cameras. A camera is not going to deter a subject who believes that by detonating his explosive vest he is going to be in paradise with 72 virgins! (Even if a few have facial hair.) The Reality is that there are not enough police personnel to protect any of our public transportation venues, including the airports. The fiasco with the physician being forcibly removed from the airplane, in fact exposed that layer of the security at O'Hare was also an illusion. Many civilians mistakenly thought that the Aviation Police were in fact armed police; instead it was shown, that they were not, and are now merely unarmed security. This incident should serve as a WARNING as to the vulnerability that we have allowed to exist. And it is all part of the Corruption and Cronyism that we Accept as Da Shitcaga Way of life and doing business. Baby "G"

BOLLARDS

More than any major city in the USA, Chicago needs our BOLLARDS (those short steel/concrete stumps) that guard pedestrians from motor vehicles. Daley-Vanecko BOLLARDS, LLC, is prepared to supply the City of Chicago with hundreds of thousand of BOLLARDS at a very reasonable cost, permanent installation included. Aside from government property, we also encourage private home owners and neighborhood organizations to have Daley-Vanecko BOLLARDS, LLC install BOLLARDS in these troubled times as protection from ISIS and deranged motorists.

Currently, we are meetings with government officials in Barcelona (Las Ramblas) and Nice, France on our BOLLARDS.

When I travel to other airports, I marvel at how much better they are then CPD at O'Hare.

Probably not the first time a (foreign born?) trucker got lost at O'Hare ... in the terminal area.
I'm assuming O'Hare feels he was lost, missed his exit or making a delivery?
Goofy signage and perhaps reading skills or GPS error causes this.
Some less than tolerant agencies call this a Dry Run.
In Welcoming Chicago its called a hiccup.
Was the minimum wage checkpoint charlie asleep?

With all the signage scattered about coming into O'Hare even seasoned and alert drivers find it confusing to locate tollway extension ramps.
No study on that issue, just LED lights and RahmWelcome signs.
If anything, the Taxis are the real horror waiting to happen.

Yes, a truck can take a wrong turn, but the driver can't park in front of terminal 3 and abandon it there. He wasn't in the truck. He wasn't 20 feet away. He was many miles away. Full of explosives, that truck could have destroyed the main part of that terminal and hundreds of people.
