Dear 16 August 2017 Class - Probationary Police Officer:
Tomorrow morning; Tuesday, 15 August 2017 at 0900 there is a meet and greet with Mayor Rahm Emanuel at the Chicago Police Academy, 1300 West Jackson Blvd. You must dress in business attire.
Your attendance is strongly recommended and encouraged. You will have an opportunity to speak with Mayor Emanuel and some of your Police Academy instructors. You can expect to be there a couple of hours.

As usual for things with the city, arranged last minute for the photo op. I hope they got paid for being used by TD 9.5 and SpecialEd.
You can bet there will be a check off list. You had better be there. Bring your knee pads along just in case.
Recruits this past weekend where packed asses to elbows on hot CTA buses like they were cattle cars of some European venues of the early 1940's and shipped to the nether-regions of the south side for the Bud Biliken shit-show.
The recruits were told to leave behind their coolers full of water and food.
They were told squad cars would be by every "now and then" to provide water to them.
Of course NO cars came by with anything in a 12 hour period while the WONDERFUL neighbors walked up to them and said "fuck the police.. bitches"
One recruit that works in our district did say he had the wonderful opportunity to have an overweight post-middle-aged female sergeant write him up for not having his hat on.
I know.. they are only recruits.. 'fuck them' right ?
Guess what, you have now poisoned a generation that has 30 plus years to go on this job. (they cant retire til' age 55 for pensions now)

It's not required to attend. HR worded it correctly so there can be no blowback. Let the recruits decide, they are adults. Their decision and might be a learning lesson after they see if HR Does or does not do anything to the recruits that chose not to attend

If they were in the academy, this has been going on for decades. My kid came on 10 years ago and they sent him down there in the academy uniform and no weapon. They all survived and it was a learning experience. Let them get used to what's ahead of them
I would be worried more about the po's with some time on the job that were detailed down to the parade. I imagine they didn't have a great day and the Sgt acted the fool with them also

When Calloway took over the academy, he was strongly opposed to make recruits work more than 8 hours a day. At times instructors would have recruits start early for workouts or study groups. Calloway opposed the idea and wanted recruits limited to 8 hours. Now suddenly, recruits have to donate 8 hours without pay for a political event? Times have really changed.
There was an all call to the media for a show up for the photo-op and particularly the one posted in the SlumTimes.

A street wise sgt would load the trunk of his/her car with water and snacks for the recruits assigned to them. The Bud Bilken parade is the most hated detail and to make the new officers stand for 12 hours without a break, water or any nutrition is just wrong. A horrible lack of leadership. The crowd hates you and your sgt abuses you. This leaves a lasting impression on the new recruits.

One thing for sure. Rahm didn't use them for a photo opt. The picture in the Times said "mayor greeted new recruits at academy Tuesday". Well the picture has him shaking hands with new recruits before their first day in the academy wearing the regulation CPD uniform along with a gun belt and radio strap. It was just an old pic

They never used a photo. One in Sun Times today had officer in full uniform shaking his hand. Memo stated recruits to be in civilian dress which is all that they can wear

Bullshit. If these recruits are ruined for life on this job and go fetal right after the academy they never had any intention of being a police officer and doing their job. What makes these new recruits any different than the rest of us that passed thru the academy. If you were in the academy during the summer you got the Bud Billikens parade detail. Big deal, you are low on seniority, deal with it. Your an adult and on the CPD. YOU WILL BE DEAL WITH WORSE THINGS IN YOUR CAREER

Haven't heard a lot of good things about PBPA and the teamster offered to represent the po' s quite a few years back. Ran a huge campaign, spent a lot of money and po' went with FOP. They aren't coming back
