Another Stripping
- A Chicago Police sergeant has been indefinitely relieved of police powers after shooting an autistic 18-year-old in the arm during an off-duty confrontation early Sunday in Morgan Park.
Officers involved in shootings are automatically put on desk duty for 30 days under CPD policy, but the Independent Police Review Authority recommended that the sergeant be taken off the streets for the duration of their investigation — a process that can take months or years.
Supt. Eddie Johnson agreed with their recommendation, according to CPD spokesman [...].
About 5 a.m., the 5th District sergeant was off-duty and driving home in his personal vehicle when he saw an 18-year-old man “acting suspiciously” near the intersection of Wood Street and Hermosa Avenue on the Far South Side, Johnson said at a Sunday press conference.
The 18-year-old, who has autism and suffers from schizophrenia, had been reported missing a few hours earlier by his foster mother.....

You are OFF DUTY! If you have concerns about criminal or suspicious activity THEN GET ON YOUR CELL PHONE AND CALL 911. You can either keep driving or park away from the suspicious activity and wait for the ON DUTY POLICE to arrive. Inform the officers what you observed the GO HOME TO YOUR FAMILY!

All I got to say is...playing the police off duty. If your life or family's life isn't in danger there's these things called blinders or there's this 3 digit number you call and that's 911.

It's the politicians, not this, that turn the public against the police.
Family members interviewed said the shot was to his "free throw shooting arm" and that his dreams of going to the NBA will now never materialize.
And taken off the streets for the duration of the investigation indicates "bad" shoot.
But that's what's bound to happen when you aren't smart enough to not roll the dice when you're feeling all police-y. Sarge musn't have been paying attention for the last several years.
I'll recap for the thick skulls out there:
ON DUTY: NOTHING proactive in the ghettos. Take your sweet assed time to respond to scene. Generate paper where necessary. Arrest on signed complaints when required.
OFF DUTY: unless YOU, your FAMILY, your LOVED ONES, your FRIENDS or your NEIGHBORS are being victimized ("acting suspiciously" in and of itself don't cut it), dial 911, report it and act as a professional witness if necessary... or ignore it altogether.
The elders used to have a saying: "stay outta grown folks' business". I've modified it and preach to the pups to stay outta the ghetto's business. Give them what they so badly want. You'll be glad you did.

May I suggest everyone get a Dash camera for their personal car, to document your drive home. Yes, the camera won't follow you if you get out of the car and paly police. In 25 plus years on CPD, I have never seen anything worth loosing my career over while driving home.
Just drive home and put the blinders on. If you must make a call to 911 for anything that you are not going to get involved in, get a Tracfone and remain anonymous. Of course if I se a PO in distress, I will stop and assist.

The sgt is a goof anyway. I can't condemn the shooting, there is only media BS available, and as we all know, the media information is mostly wrong, mostly hype and mostly contrived assumption. He's a merit hack, and always thinks he's above everyone else, smarter than everyone else, and others should emulate him and his ways. First - I agree with every comment that suggested the sergeant keep driving and go home.
Second - as someone who took this job over two decades ago, and actually gave a shit about "doing the right thing" and "helping those in need" and all that good stuff, it's a fucking shame what this job and this city have become. Twenty years ago....ah, never mind....not worth it.

I always assume that the officer is Reasonable in his/her actions, but on this one, the Sgt. deserves to be off the job. Shooting someone who is unarmed and "acting suspiciously", whatever that means, is not acceptable. How can anyone follow a Sergeant this Numb? What is the standard for Acting Suspiciously? Drive around the 015, 007th, 004th, and several other districts on a hot August night, and you will find almost Everyone Acting Suspiciously, compared to other areas of the City. Stay safe, use the cell phone when off-duty not your weapon; unless you or your loved ones are under attack. Then, all bets are off! Baby "G"

Early 8='s in the deuce was a wagon man who none of the guys with only a few years on wanted to work with. Park under a viaduct next to the Dan Ryan, and read newspapers and books. Always answered the radio and always did his assigned jobs. It didn't take too many years of policing the projects for most to realize he was a wise man of vision.
And the cop is a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or counselor and somehow knew that the J/O was autistic and schizophrenic? Plueeeze.... How about if you have someone that fucked up, they're in a mental ward where they can't get out?

I would hope not. With the way things are going their life expectancy on the job would be short. In today's climate all you could look forward to would be Court, both civil and criminal, inquests. IPRA and DOJ interviews. Defending yourself in the grand jury just to mention a few. Forget the worry that 5 -10 down the line the results of your investigation will be opened and you will be questioned about your investigation. No thanks to that job

Maybe that would be the reason for a poor driving record
People can either accept this is nothing more then a job or keep running around acting like your really saving the world. One of these options lets you go home, keep your house and lets you sleep at night. The other well keep chasing those ghetto birds and see what happens. One of the ipra investigators picked up the bloody shirt from the crime scene and gives it to the mother. They got it back but it sat in the back of a city car for a few days before an et got it. I wonder what other evidence they mishandled and tampered with, and what will be thrown out at a trial. Fucking idiots.
If his clout was any good he wouldn't have gotten dumped and he wouldn't have been stripped

Totally agree, had an argument in the past with this goof that he is the Real Police and everyone should be like him. I told him good luck with that and I will be attending his benefit in the near future. Guess I was right.

Just my point. Since when does being an ass get you dumped if you have real clout. There are asses all over the department that can't be moved because of clout. Other officers have survived bad incidents and were even promoted
This Sergeant was made merit by IAD Chief Welch who happens to be his fraternity brother. Words is he was vying to get back to IAD. By the way he is also tied to The Honorable Louis Farrakhan. HQ will be surrounded by the FOI in No time.
