Good Question

The primary qualification for "acting up" as an FTO appears to be that you are on the "Sergeant Eligibility List" for promotion, meaning you had to score as well as the dumbest clout hack that Special Ed wants to promote, so somewhere in the vicinity of 57%. If you scored 58%, you might never get promoted legitimately, but you can qualify to teach someone how to be the police.

Is there any actual additional training? We don't plan on finding out, so we'll need to hear from someone in the process. Because teaching isn't easy. You have to make the material interesting and applicable to real life situations. We can do that with a blog, but we aren't being modest when we say we doubt our ability to teach it to another human being. Sure, we can help someone fill in a parker or write a mover and our case reports would win screenwriting Oscars.

But the stuff that only comes with experience would be far harder. The only way to get that experience is to ...well, experience it. And keeping an eye on a green rookie (or two) along with the situation we're in the midst of, and actually use it as a learning experience while it's going on? Not our cup of tea.

I'm surprised there is no "merit" FTO, you know, for those who "don't test well", but get pushed thru via a phone call. It also helps if you are a relative, sex partner, or any "clouted" person. Next time , may I suggest a subject matter expert hold secret study classes for a select group so they can get super-duper FTO scores. Worked for the Lt exam.

Speaking from experience, the acting gig training was as long as the actual fto training and SCC is right as usual, there’s really no training involved, bit of refreshers on important topics and the rest are very useless classes that you have to sit through. 99% is what you know and experienced is basically what you go off training somebody. Call it 4-5 weeks on days, sat+sun off and every once in a while early duck, that’s pretty much sums it up. Very few signed up last year, half the class dropped in the first day because department heads realized that it’s not kosher to call people trainers without actually giving them state mandated amount of classes and material as compared to reg Ftos so that notice mentioning 2 weeks might get slightly longer, as long as current fto class in the academy. Who knows maybe they cram material faster so it’s not 4-5 weeks anymore?

FTOs have always been a roll of the dice at best. Some are good some are shit. Whether they have 3 years on ( yes some of them are this brand new) or whether they have 20 years on. Either way It has become a lousy job because that’s what the dept has made it into. The majority of people who take on the job do so because they’re trying to get out of a shitty district or the marginal extra pay/ perks. It’s rare that you find a person that actually has patience and enjoys teaching. And that is what makes all the difference in the world. CPD is full of arrogance and egos. Its a right of passage lol. Good luck.

Very true, some take the job because they fail short at at making sergeant, so they like the feeling of ordering someone around. They like the feeling of having someone tagging along. Some have nothing to offer the news officers. Some is so screwed up that they will never be able to find a real partner, so at least they know that they’ll get a PPO to talk to death and treat like shit.

Back when I wanted to give back ,I took the FTO position. FTOs were suppose to know as much as a sgt. The only difference was you couldnt answer up for a supervisor job. I took pride in what I did but as years went by one could see the change in the recuits that were coming on. I began to go home with headaches and that pride faded fast. I have since retired . My advise , if you dont make sgt by the time retirement is near, take the position it bumps up your pension. Headaches gone , Blood pressure back to normal. Not missing bs. Stay safe

Guys if I can get one of these acting FTO spots I will take it. Even though I have a less than 10 years on I have worked in a fast district and pitched in on tact and on special details in my area. I have an undergrad (Roosevelt University)) and masters degree (National Lewis University) and on top of that I'm bilingual. I'm willing to wager that this might be my opportunity to enhance my profile and get my stripes. I don't test well but I work my ass off and nail down Part 1 arrests on a quarterly basis. Guns? At least two a month. Movers/Parkers? I check off with at least five movers, and fifteen parkers each night. The only time I don't hit this number is when I catch a DUI or another significant arrest like a Part 1. I don't work with or tolerate dog asses or malcontents. As a result when I'm not 10-99 I work with young guys and they are gratified to work their asses off - lunch? That's for pussys. The new guys I work with as a condition of being my disciple for the night have to match me mover per mover and Parker for for Parker and if I'm in the mood curfew for curfew. Unfortunately I'm not good at standardized exam.......so this is my shot. Sorry. I feel like I have a choice. I can bitch and moan and talk about being fetal or I can be the best copper I can be and let my hard work make the case for my promotion. I'll take a merit promotion in a heart beat. Give me stripes and I will be a Watch Slave Driver for malcontents and Mentor for workers. Think about it we are very well paid and we have the privilege of public service. On another subject, have not seen this on the news, but it happened at O'Hare: Everyone knows or has seen on the news, that crazy old homeless White woman who gets on planes without a ticket. Well, she stuck again, and this time she got all the way to London! The Security at O'Hare, is a joke! This woman's photo has been all over the news. So how was she allowed to hang around the airport for over a day before boarding her flight to London without a ticket or passport? I have actually seen TSA stop an elderly veteran of Korea or WWII, and make him remove his artificial leg. Yet they cannot even stop a serial airport stowaway! WTF! Baby "G"

Screw up inventories, don't know how to classify crimes etc... I feel embarrassed when they're standing in front of the desk sgt. with their P.P.O. and getting corrected on everything, it's like they never made an arrest or wrote tickets.

How come Special Ed - The Early Years stories hardly pop up in the commentary?
Was he that low key ghost, a house mouse, always bounced from unit to unit detail, a no-split lone wolf?
You would think with all that wit and if CPD had its own currency, Rahm would put Special Ed on the $100 bill.

FTO-ing is not for the impatient, especially part-timing for Rahm’n Juggheads new batch of incoming bling-bling tenders.
Perhaps a majority of decent, level minded blokes, but guaranteed there’ll be some COPA snitch rats layered in.
But getting some 10-15+ yr experienced POs to volunteer...for $1.75 a day...won’t happen, hence the 3 year Wonders.
Somebody gotta do it.

Ever ax’ a supervisor a question and they’re dumbfounded, then tell you to pissoff and you should go look up the GO?

Now you know...
They got that question wrong on the exam or it was on Part 2.

Don’t be stupid , merit has nothing to do with working the street, knowledge of the job, anything you did to to deserve a meritorious promotion. It has to do with relatives, friends or clouted

It’s called street exposure or some nonsense like that, I’ve seen it happen last year, she trained for like a cycle that was it, she was wheezeee bridesmaid now a Sgt in hq. That’s proper merit way.
One day she will come back to a district to get some street experience to make a merit Lieutenant . Nothing changes

Oh we are somebody alright. We are the door mat of this city that the midget and “superiors” wipe their shit on when the scum of society come knocking, crying over some criminal. They’re delusional and have no clue how to run this city or this department. So keep on hard charging and being all you can be. You’d fit right in with their little club. But your attitude may change when someone’s relative gets a promotion before you.

When you pin on that CPD Star you are somebody in this town!

Been there; done that. Plus I've always done extremely well with (legit) standardized testing.

Your entire rant was either somewhat subtle sarcasm or you've been brainwashed with copious quantities of Fort Fellatio's Kool-Aid. If the latter is the case, you are delusional and you desperately need psychiatric help. This is Chicago, slick.

The one thing i noticed is that all your comments go againts being a fto but yet you all were recruits . Not one mention of how you all got to where you're at because of your fto. Yes everyone had either fto, acting
Or back when they were called patrol specialists. They all influenced your path to where your at today in some way.

This can't be serious. You don't take a lunch? Then again I would never be stuck working with you as I'm a malcontent.

I like the cut of this kids jib, a real throw back to when men were men. I myself drive around in a box Chevy to show these young bucks what a real police car used to look like.

Somewhat subtle?

This masterpiece of mirthful mockery couldn't be less subtle if he'd simply said....I am King of Fuck This Bullshit Shithole Scam City.....

.....even if there are those who both fit the description and popped a boner reading it........

Fuck......subtlety my ass......

Northern,

I appreciate your long service and advocacy on behalf of Sergeants but your time has come and gone and the demands of the job are far more complex and the outcomes have far deeper repercussions. As a society we are at a crossroads. New coppers are far more educated and in tune with the policing needs of a new and great society. We have grown up embracing diversity, coznigant of the need for community engagement and rapprochement. We see the Johnson Brothers as role models. We understand the Mayor's vision for a 21st century Chicago. Our generation has taken the baton of leadership and we will take care of you and this great city. Semper Fi. By the way my home room motto was We are one with our elected officials, citizens, residents, and guests". Take care Old Sergeant.
