- Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Friday she’s said all she intends to say about being caught on an open mic calling the second vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police “this FOP clown” and will not be rushed into negotiating a police contract.
National FOP President Chuck Canterbury has demanded that Lightfoot apologize to rank-and-file Chicago police officers and “conduct herself with more dignity and less immaturity.” Canterbury contended if Lightfoot is “truly sorry, she needs to do something to improve her relationship” by bargaining “in good faith” with the officers, whose union contract expired more than two years ago.
The mayor was asked Friday about the controversy of her own making at this week’s City Council meeting that overshadowed her two legislative victories on ethics reform and predictable scheduling for low-wage workers. “There’s no more to say about that. I said what I said the other day. It’s something I shouldn’t have said out loud. And I think we’ve got bigger fish to fry,” the mayor said at an unrelated news conference.
There's no trust. Both sides have dug in and an impasse is the only certainty. Better to force the arbitration issues than be the last one in a long line of unions bucking for better contracts and being told the cupboard is bare - again.

Lightfoot does not have to apologize, because she is an arrogant person, who like her predecessor, detests Chicago Police! FOP is not a Union and police do not have a Right to Strike. Her written statement that she considers CPD to be an "Inherently Racist Organization" speaks volumes to what she thinks of CPD, and she made no apology for that misrepresentation of reality. The fact that she does not Trust CPD to guard her or her family makes it abundantly clear; that she neither likes or trusts CPD. What more does FOP need to realize these Facts? She’s not worried about arbitration. If it doesn’t go her way, she will not get it ratified by the city council. It’s not binding arbitration. It has to be approved by the city council. What do we have about 6 to 8 aldermen that would go against her. She can always say the city can’t afford it. Going to be a tough year

So what you’re saying is the city can stall and cancel negotiations forever, and essentially we may never get a raise and the contract that expired over 2 years ago can remain in place for the next 30 years??? Over two years of stalling should be grounds for arbitration or some other avenue.

First of all, we can’t demand arbitration until all the issues both ours and hers have been raised. The city keeps stalling and cancelling contract negotiations. There isn’t too much we can do about that immediately. I only wish that FOP had the power to do all the things that people call for in this blog. Who do they think we are, the teachers union ? Do they realize that the city wants to pull the 55 and out but it stays in place until there is a new contract in place. If we don’t handle it properly in negotiations we could lose that. No of course not a word the silence is deafening . Is it because the Presidents of their organizations are all bosses that are beholding to the powers that be to keep their nice Boss spot. There could be an argument made for a retiree being the president of FOP. He wouldn’t be obligated to the mayor and wouldn’t be looking for a political job after his time as president. There is nothing that says the mayor has to negotiate or arbitration a new contract. She can refuse both and just keep kicking the can down the road. The police can’t strike so there is zero loss for her to give the police a new contract. In fact. If she got rid of the fop and made all police at-will right to work employees who could be fired for anything without cause the community would love her even more. She could change the pension too. Here in the Feds we have no union or representation and only get 32% of our salary after 25 years under the FERS retirement system, while older employees who started prior to 1995 are under the CSRS retirement system and get 80% after 20 years. The real story now comes out. This liberal, left wing cop hater actually was president of the Police Board. Now, she can nominate all members of the police board, and I would think they will all be liberal left wing cop haters. Law enforcement is dead in Chicago for some time to come. I would hope that every thinking police officer just chill and do as little as possible until things shake out and you can see which way the wind really blows. While I appreciate the fact that someone will speak his mind, you can't come in throwing daggers and expect to get an invitation to dinner in return. She made it clear from the beginning that she's no friend of the police, but resorting to school yard behavior on both sides instead of relying simply on professional discussion and facts gets us nowhere. She called the fop vp a clown because that's how she sees the entire department. We have two extremes as a response to the nonsense that the mayor puts out there: The fop writes a letter that nobody but us reads, and then you get a po that goes and starts slinging insults as soon as he gets a mic in his hand. Maybe you are ok with the crap she puts out but I certainly am NOT. She called for a federal investigation of Walsh, Gaffney and March not even 48hrs after winning the election.
