- The national Fraternal Order of Police demanded that Mayor Lori Lightfoot apologize after a hot mic caught her calling a local police union leader “this FOP clown” during Wednesday’s City Council meeting.
“How does she expect to work with the police department if she regularly disparages their leadership and refuses to communicate honestly with them?” Chuck Canterbury, president of the national FOP that represents 348,000 law enforcement officers, said in a statement. “We respectfully suggest she conduct herself with more dignity and less immaturity."
At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Lightfoot was overheard on the dais saying, “Back again. This is this FOP clown," as local FOP Vice President Patrick Murray approached the microphone available for the public to speak.
How about pushing the local boys to do a little bit more?

Agreed. Furthermore didn’t she say that was sorry she said it out loud? Correct apology would be to say “I’m sorry I think that the police are clowns, I will work on my prejudices”. In any case her apology means nothing. It has become a useless word that everybody repeats while not meaning it. I’d also rather see what the disgusting Mayor thinks of the police even thought I don’t think it was a secret. Now it is on record.
What if I believe, that our FOP Lodge 7 staff IS a bunch of clowns? I have read much worse on this blog about our union leadership. Let's quit the "selective moral outrage" over this and be glad the mayor voiced in public how she really feels. Documents obtained by the Tribune under a public records request show the Police Department gathered the details on nearly 60 people in advance of their speaking at monthly meetings of the Chicago Police Board since at least January 2018. The checks appear to be extensive, with police searching at least one internal department database to determine if speakers have arrest or prison records, warrants outstanding for their arrest, investigative alerts issued for them by the department and even if they’re registered sex offenders or missing persons. FOP should erect billboard signs along the expressways and tollways showing a Chicago police officer in uniform with a CLOWN face with the caption " THIS IS WHAT THE MAYOR OF CHICAGO THINKS OF THE CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT " I would love to see this billboard sign.

I’m tired of us taking the high road. With past regimes at FOP, it was always the “we’re not going to negotiate in the media” stance, and the City would do just that, repeatedly. I’m tired of it. Get some people in there will be brash, abrasive, and vocal. Try something new. It’s obvious the old way is not going to work.

Recently retired guy here. I admit, while I was on the job, I didn't pay much attention to what the union was doing. I assumed that they were covering my ass and every election, I voted for who the unit rep told me to vote for. I admit, I was a lazy ass when it came to the union politics, but in my defense, I had a lot of crap happening in my life, between the job and kids and side jobs....! Anyways, I'm now retired and have lots of time on my hands. I attended law school, but never took the bar exam. I have an MBA in accounting. My question is, can I run for president of the Lodge 7 local or do I need to be still active?
Blue flu does not work or help our cause, a slow(er) down won't either. A ticket blitz is the real answer, been there, done it and it gets a ton more attention, if it moves or parks wrong, WRITE IT!!! However, all in progress gets full lights and sirens right up to said address. It works. Also, and I know it wont happen but Quit working special enjoyment, etc.!!!

The last real ticket blitz was organized by COP, Confederation Of Police, about 1976, years before FOP.
It failed.
We wrote a lot marginal tickets.
All it did was piss off the taxpayers who liked the police and piss off people who were indifferent towards us.
Traffic court was packed with pissed off citizens. All cases were dropped, even real DUIs.
In this day of das cams, body cams, etc you would be stupid to ticket blitz.
Also, if your work history is writing 4 or 5 tickets a month and then you suddenly write 7-8 tickets a day during a period declared
a ticket blitz, and your activity goes back to 4-5 when the blitz is over, the city will charge you will ever rule violation in the book.
3rd, all traffic stops are risky. The more traffic stops you do, your increasing your chances of physical, financial injury.
4th, the ticket blitz only involves street officers of Patrol. The Dets and the special cops don't write any tickets.

I usually enjoy watching Chicago Tonight with Phil Ponce, but this week when he was talking with a group about the "hot mic" incident with Lori Lightfoot, the group was so admiring of her not apologize for her rudeness to a police officer. I found this disturbing and disgusting. No wonder our poor city is going to the criminals. It would have been nice for one person to support the police.

Are you sure it was Ponce? Paris Schutz was the panel interviewer for "Chicago Tonight's The Week In Review" on Friday. Dan Mihalopoulos, Sun-Times writer and police hater, was one of the panelists. On Thursday's Chicago Tonight, LL was interviewed by Paris Schutz.

She is a blind person and was holding a white, long walking stick of the type used by the blind, plus she is mentally challenged. Her actions were not unlike the actions of some mentally challenged people. The decision to place her at the focal point is arguable.
