For the record, I was badly injured breaking up a rave party a few years back and was treated like royalty when CFD took me to Rush. From the emergency room, through surgery and physical therapy nothing but the best of care.

Let me give you some advice. Always, always get involved in your medical treatment. Ask questions, review your test results. If you think you should be getting other tests, or other treatments, ask why you are not? Read up on your diagnosis, and from multiple sources, not just WebMD. Do not be afraid to ask a second opinion.
I learned the hard way. Luckily the problems were quickly reversed when the doctor reviewed my complaints and my test results after I pointed out my concern.
If you have a good case?
Interview your lawyers. Multiple lawyers, pick the best one.
Don't go with Cousin Vinny, because he's family.
Don't go with the guy promising a quick settlement.
And expect any payoff to be years and years away.
The other guys will not settle until they are picking the jury, and maybe not even then.
Read Rush's statements from Dr Omar Lateef, one hateful motherfucker if there was one. Go to the Rush statement blaming structural racism for George Floyd's "murder", guess they aren't real doctors at Rush, cuz a real doctor would have read Floyd's autopsy report. It could be a "subdural hematoma". The burst blood vessel in the head can cause a slow trickle that forms a blood clot after several days. The blood clot than pushes against the brain causing dizziness, nausea and confusion among other symptoms.
This usually requires surgery to drain the clot. This happened to my father. He had to see a neurosurgeon.
Officer, demand a CT scan. Since it is IOD related, the city will have to pay the bill. You may as well start looking for the best neurosurgeon you can find.

Unbeknownst to me. I recently went to do my annual physical at Rush Hospital. I entered on the fourth floor to access the main building at which time I was greeted by a female black security guard with light dreadlocks and tattoos on her arms. This security officer saw that I happen to be wearing a “Chicago Police Memorial” shirt. Without hesitation she stated, “Oh hell naw, you better go to a different place, we ain’t down with that you wearing.” Ignorantly, I laughed and proceeded to walk pass her at which time she stated, “Stop, I run the show here not you, walk when I say so whitey.” Funny thing is that I’m Mexican American! I proceeded to ignore her and she stayed in her chair “mean mugging me. I wrote a letter to Rush but now that I read this pint it all makes sense!

Spent 30 years as an Er doc.
There are criteria in the ER for a head CT or MRI.
In a normal healthy individual, they are loss of consciousness, altered mental status, persistent vomiting. If the Glasgow Coma Scale is 13 or better no CT. Older age, use of blood thinning medications are also on the list. Intoxication makes it almost mandatory to get a CT because you can't adequately evaluate the patient.
If this officers symptoms developed days later the diagnosis is probably a concussion, and that does not show up on imaging.
Sorry to hear about the officer. Medical care should have nothing to do with personal bias.
OMG, that is hard to believe! I remember a time I had to set an intern straight re a prisoner. Doc was kissing his ass. Prisoner told doc he never did drugs, etc. I had to take young dumb doc shithead was locked up for buying heroin. Prisoner was cuffed to bed since he tried to escape as well. Doc pulled curtain and I said no f#@$&**ng way. Years. before, had a prisoner who bit a copper, and said prisoner needed stitches somewhere and after doc heard what happened told prisoner he had to do the stitches without anesthesia. What happened to those days?

He better make sure he has as much documentation as possible. I have first hand experience with them omitting things from the visit records after it was discussed several times during an ER visit. They type their notes after, there are no real time notes...those I’m sure go in the trash, especially if they shine bad light on them. And yes, many (not all) Nurses are nothing more than teachers in sweats. It started after 911 when we made them all Heroes. I can tell you for a fact working HGS that many of them say the most vile things about people that come into the ER & hospitals. I’ve watched them talk to people like they were trash. The job, like ours, can make you hard, but what bothers me is the hypocrisy. Put a body cam on Doctors & Nurses- see they ain’t such fucking heroes. Yet, they act so pious as if they’d never treat someone without humanity. I can tell you first hand, they can be straight up arrogant assholes. Some good ones too, but they absolutely aren’t the perfects saints they are made out to be. Oh and I know plenty of you cops are married to one. Doctors seem to always take the expensive route when they’re guaranteed getting paid. Sometimes I wonder if they work on commissions. Triage assessment by an RN is the first step? Anyone neglect to chart the triage process?
Not every head bonk gets a MRI, but at least maybe there was a concussion protocol followed (a big deal in the failing NFL), it’s the doctor who make the decision on an MRI based on mitigating circumstances.

He’s an asshole. Years ago when Clinton was in office & in Chicago for something. We were detailed to whatever parade or whatever it was. Durbin was new, no one knew who the frick he was. We were cut from the detail & walking the parade route back to our cars. Durbin starts paralleling our walk back, jokes with us that he looks important because he has 10 uniformed police surrounding him. At the time, I thought it was funny. 21 years later, I realize that’s the mentality of these self-important politicians. They like the protection, the safety of us but haven’t a clue what we give up to give that protection to people. Not one of these Democrats has any reality of the dangers we face and trying to do that undergo constant second guessing of our actions by people who have barely learned to wipe their asses yet.

Well, I’ll say if it was a “rave” your injury occurred in the 1990s or at least by 2001. The anti cop rhetoric by nurses & doctors has been amping Up in the past 15 years.
Generally whether or not Imaging is done is based on objective criteria, not whether it is a police officer or not. If the symptoms don't warrant Imaging they don't do it. Sometimes the symptoms appear in later on.

Sue the attacker first and foremost. He's an "aspiring" rap "Artist", who now has the public platform via the media to spin his story and sell his noise. He was the precurser cause of the injury, and, if the hospital neglected or underperformed the appropriate level of care, then name them in the same suit. If they offered imaging tests and the tests were declined by the patient, that will be problematic, but if only an xray of the cervical spine was taken, the victim officer i.e. patient, has grounds to sue as he would have an expectation of care that was not met and the hospital, staff, and treating physician(s) as an individual(s) has an obligation for due diligence, making each subject to makpractice. Wearing a helmet does not prevent injury, it only reduces the injury if unprotected, and reduces likelihood of greater injury. It reduces not prevents. The Dr and radiologist should have considered mechinism of injury and not just go off the premis he was wearing a helmet so the brain is fine, check for spinal injury, which is what it sounds like. But only if the patient didn't decline any additional imaging tests. Some of the Docs there are great, but as usual, it depends on the individual. The officer will know if his standard of care was ignored. Proving malpractice is difficult, proving intentional neglect is even harder. If the tests weren't done, or were ignored will be the officers determining factor in bringing suit against Rush. The suit against the assailant attacker, the video recorded aggitatior should move foreward quickly. Get a lawyer on that ASAP, and have that Atty bring in a professional malpractice Atty if the investigation reveals that occurred as well. DO NOT trust the malpractice case to the local lawyer. The case will prove far better if experience is brought in. Start with the offender, STRIKE FIRST. Name him as an individual, his music label, and his estate in the event he is claiming or determined to be unstable or unfit.

In my own case, within last month, I went to emergency room in Upper Peninsula. The doctor, was more interested in payment and "insurance doesn't pay claims like this..."
I told him "I've been to the hospital 3-4 times through the years. All was paid. I'm not destitute."
He never even introduced himself as a doctor. Piss poor dr/patient skills! BTW, all was paid.

Hey, I work for Rush in the ER. Not a single doc I work with would risk getting sued to make an anti police statement. Even the one I refer to as "Dr. Comrade" at home. CTs are done ALL THE TIME,even when it's just some asshole trying to win the ghetto lottery after getting rear ended or some such minor thing. Couldn't tell you what happened here. Maybe the doc was like,"hey, if you feel ok and want to pass on the radiation,up to you"? If it wasn't offered or recommended, sue the hell out of whoever it was. While there really is a disgusting number of SJW brand new grad idiot nurses, lots of us REALLY LOVE the police, since the security like the above mentioned sack of shit is what we have to "back us up" when some hoodrat/psycho wants to start swinging. I've been to Rush twice in my 13 year career once in 2011 for injuries from a car accident (Northwestern for er on this incident) the doctor and surgeon in orthopedics were phenomenal, had a cervical diskectomy, back full duty after 10 months. I was also injured in the first round of rioting this year and went to Rush including the er. I was not treated badly by anyone but I was actually mostly treated and dealt with a wonderful nurse who is the wife of a p.o that works in the annex building behind the 1st district, she was phenomenal. I am currently under the care of a great orthopedic surgeon for an injury to my dominant hand and no one has treated me badly yet. I will admit that I d recall ever wearing a police shirt to any of my appointments...except my initial visit to the er for each incident.

From what I remember, they ask if you lost conscience. If so, then I think a CT and MRI are SOP.
I know they can tell a lot from watching the movement of the eyes.
Bottom Line Is: None of us have enough information to condemn Rush. Let's be cautions in are postings. We do not want to alienate the medical community.

In fairness Rush is my Hospital and I always got treated well there. Even for emergencys. I was brought in once, thought I was having a heart attacks, and the E-room Doctors were all over my carcass like the Delta squad. I dont know what happened with this copper but Ive always been treated very well there.

Unbeknownst to me. I recently went to do my annual physical at Rush Hospital. I entered on the fourth floor to access the main building at which time I was greeted by a female black security guard with light dreadlocks and tattoos on her arms. This security officer saw that I happen to be wearing a “Chicago Police Memorial” shirt. Without hesitation she stated, “Oh hell naw, you better go to a different place, we ain’t down with that you wearing.” Ignorantly, I laughed and proceeded to walk pass her at which time she stated, “Stop, I run the show here not you, walk when I say so whitey.” Funny thing is that I’m Mexican American! I proceeded to ignore her and she stayed in her chair “mean mugging me. I wrote a letter to Rush but now that I read this pint it all makes sense!

You have to benyour own advocate! Insist on being taken to Stroger or Northwestern if you are ever involved in a line of duty injury! This is complete BS offenders get the best treatment at Trauma 1 hospitals but Officers don’t!!! When my husband was injured in the line of duty I insisted he be taken to Stroger NOT ILLINOIS MORONIC OR RUSH I worked for one of the biggest law firms in the city they used to say they are two of the WORST hospitals in the city! I would start with Clifford Law and interview more than one big firm!He should have automatically been given a cat scan NOT a X-RAY (I was hit by a drunk driver and had hematoma on the brain IF they wouldn’t have done a CT scan I could’ve died from a brain hemorrhage and/or aneurism (Northwestern worked quickly)...I sincerely hope this Officer does his homework and sues the shit out of them!
If anyone knows this Officer suggest that he calls Kevin Durkin of the Clifford Law Offices, phone #312-899-9090. Kevin is a former Asst States Attorney and LOVES THE POLICE.
That officer should also make a complaint with the IL. Department of Public Health. If what your saying is true then the nurses and doctors involved may face discipline by their boards.

While it may not be a public policy to provide lesser courses of treatment to LE personnel it sounds like there is a deep seated bias and hate manifesting itself by professional and semi professional employees working at Rush Hospital. Seek legal recourse, spread the word about terrible and inappropriate Doctor course of treatment, obtain second opinion, write letters to Illinois Hospital Association, Ill. Professional Standards Board.
Remember the bullshit campaign about nurses and doctors being our heroes during the Wuhan Red Death. The same for every LE/Fire/EMS/other. All Heroes. Doctors, nurses and techs get in line with the rest of the heroes.
This post has several examples of unprofessional behavior by these "medical heroes". No isolated instances here but rather patterns of abuse. Rush Hospital is a business, never forget that. It’s called Attention to Duty. Some of us took an oath to do our jobs. You must be either a Rush Doctor/Nurse or a CPS teacher.
My wife opened the car door and hit her forehead little cut on the eyebrow no stitches. She went to Lutheran General Hospital and they did x-rays and a CT Scan.
Had a doctor at St. Francis ER treat me with absolute contempt & lack of compassion after a miscarriage. I was completely in the dark, wondering if I was misreading her actions. Happened to mention it to an old partner, but didn’t mention the doctor. Without missing a beat, he blurted out, “Was it—-?” I asked how he knew. “She hates the police.” When you can’t put aside your bias against a profession to treat an individual who is in not just in physical pain, but deep emotional pain....you should hand in your license to practice medicine. You are not a healthcare provider.
I have nothing but the best to say about rush I was diagnose with stage 3 lung cancer and had nothing but the best doctors and thoracic surgeon and that was 6 years ago so say what you want but I am a cancer survivor thanks to rush

I was admitted a few months ago for a few days for legit illness and treated very well. The nurses were super.
They are pretty overwhelmed there. The floor was Loaded with Jagoffs having big problems with their illegal drug use and then there was COVID all over the place.
I dont know what happened with this copper and we'll say prayers for his recovery but the vibe I got was sympathy and concern for coppers by the staff.
I went to my Doctor a few weeks ago and in the middle of that campus, at 1500 hrs in an afternoon, some mutt was walking west on Van Buren wearing a WW1 type gas mask and carrying a baseball bat. I guess he was heading home from his downtown festivities. That or he was going to hit some poor nurse going home on the head with the bat and steal her car.
No shit! At 1500 hrs and he didn't look like a grandson of Billy William's. I almost called it in and got 012 over there but decided "fuck it". My Police days are done and its not illegal to walk down the sidewalk of a Major teaching Hospital campus wearing a WW1 gas mask and carrying a baseball bat.
100 people on the street and only the fat fuck retired cop even noticed him. LMAO.
The world has definitely taken a turn to the surreal.

Ridiculous the way we are treated. Back in March a dui driver rear-ended the squad car while my partner and I were investigating a traffic crash. My partner wasn't in the car but I was in the driver's seat when the accident happened. I went to little company of Mary and they never did any x-rays or catscan. I can't recall if the doctor offerred them or not. I did develop whiplash from the accident.
I hope the officer sues and gets millions.
I also wish the officer a speedy recovery.

As an ER Nurse certified in TNCC and TNS, worked many level 1 trauma ER. Let me say it depends on doctor. I personally been screwed over a few times due to idiot md that refused to do appropriate testing. I recently was smashed, rear ended by a semi. Driver fell asleep and I was stopped at red light. The ER only did a X-ray, when an mri was needed. It cost me a lot of money on my lawsuit. Another, I had hit a guardrail 55 mph. Total my car. Had screwed up my knee. I was given 1 X-ray of wrong knee in 2 visits. After 2 months finally getting into ortho. I was told yes, I did have a broken knee. But of course now he said tax would be the same. RICE method. Not sure how that would be. Anyway, point is these big healthcare conglomerates have no problem screwing the patient. As long as they don’t have to call in their tech overnight to do imaging.

I had been IOD a couple of times and there was always at least a Sgt. At the hospital? I have been assigned to assist an IOD’d Officer at the hospital a few times. It is odd that the hospital did not load up on the testing. If they see that you have good insurance, they don’t hesitate! I remember when Eddie Burke’s finance committee, (City is self insured), would not pay for MRIs. They fucked up a whole lot of Coppers that should have been scanned....

I understand what you are saying, however ANYONE on the web can comment here, not just Police. So there are some that have a
vested interest in defending Rush to get ahead of this disaster. Quite obvious actually.

Again, thank you for the commentary by a 5 year cop who thinks he is busting the balls of a 2 year cop.
They perform tests before accepting your refusal to determine whether someone is able to refuse treatment. They will also ask if you have a medical POA. They are only obliged to perform life saving measures. If they determine that you are hurt, but of sound mind to make decisions regarding your level of care, you can refuse tests.
For those saying “sue the aspiring rap artist” - what funds would you sue him for? His debt? His LINK card? His stolen property? His section 8 apartment? You can’t get blood from a turnip.
The best route is obviously to get whatever tests are offered and always get a second opinion too.
Well wishes for the battered officer and I wish all officers safe and sane days off with their family, however sparse. Keep your shit together in your personal lives, do not let the job ruin who you are. And if you have the opportunity, consider working elsewhere. I left CPD after 6 years for a sheriff’s police department; took a pay cut the first few years but it was well worth it. Going 10-41/42 from the computer of my take home squad, in my driveway. Days off not suddenly cancelled. A fully funded incredible pension, AND we collect social security. The money I save not paying Catholic school tuition offset the initial pay cut. Great schools, A nice house in the burbs. And we top out at $100k as a patrolman. Trust me, you are not as trapped as you think you are.

My family "HAD" been going to RUSH for 100 years. Wealthy of the family "WERE" benefactors" giving tall $$$$, and I mean tall money to RUSH. Two years ago, they misdiagnosed my health condition and I nearly met my maker ! Loyola Medical saved my life when I was transported bleeding out unconscious in my residence. Not a pleasant sight.
Now, under the treatment of a battery of MD' and their staff, I never felt better in ten years. Before retirement, I was transported to Rush while working for conditions due to my silent killer lurking in my body.
I noticed the change in Rush for about 15 years. Most of their staff knew family dropped to this 3 rd. world hospital, but still relented to find my issues were related to a totally different medical condition. All the great MD' at Rush took an early retirement or went elsewhere.
Now Rush gets ball sweat. Rush also did a butcher job on my wife' face after getting cancer. Will I file suit on them, probably not. malpractice suit in Illinois takes a lot of $$ upfront and their insurance companies will fight to the end. It takes a lot to prove malpractice especially in CROOK county court system. Judges are wired to many law firms hired by insurance companies.
Look at the present president of and board member bio'. Rush is not your late parents hospital any longer ! From what I hear, NW hospital is running the same way.
Their residents of both hospitals are sorry ass MD'.
Take your goldfish to both of these shit hospitals if you want them stuffed. When they call after a banger is there and family hit the "Mourning wall" and act their usual crazy self, take your time ! The security and administration at both these gerbil ghetto hospitals will throw you under the bus if shit hits the fan.
Stay uninjured during these turbulent times andory a will pray and hope for a full recovery the the officers with the horrible head injury.
PS- Rush has a hand painted mural on the wall from the garage 4th floor inside of Hospital, to the professional building "black lives matter." You cannot miss it. I doubt if I ever will set foot at Rush again but some coppers need to take a picture of it. It made me ill seeing it when I was last there last month for all my records.
I had 2 minor outpatient surgeries and an iod injury and therapy at Rush all in the 90s. Everyone I dealt with there was terrific,very much appreciative of cops and really treated me great. Sad to hear that now they’ve got shitty libtards there who are so disrespectful. Times change I guess.

All hospitals have ... it's simple.... under obama the hospital systems consolidated to save costs, fight the obvious collapse being forced on them. As a result the systems had to play games with finance.
it's a shit show. If you ever go into the hospital, look at the detailed bills, then see what insurance pays ( private vs. medicare va. medicaid ) it's a wonder the hospitals even exist.
