We've only been warning about the "money tree" running out for eighteen years or so:
The recent surge of migrants has put major cities across the U.S. under significant financial pressure.
“I think it’s at this point, politically unsustainable for the Biden administration to maintain this unlimited flow into what’s essentially a welfare state network of cities like New York, Denver and Chicago,” said Simon Hankinson, a senior research fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C.
As pressure continues, cities such as Chicago and New York have begun putting restrictions on the bussing of some migrants from the South. But experts say more federal assistance and funding are necessary to ensure that cities can survive the ongoing crisis.
Of course, it's a conservative think tank making the prediction, so nothing will be done about it:

So their game plan is this. They want to keep the illegals coming and use the taxpayer’s money to pay for hotel rooms, maid & laundry services, clothing, medical & dental services, transportation et al. In California the State will even pay for a sex change operation. In the case of hotels room occupancy changes on a daily basis with tourists business persons and others. So they don’t fill the hotels every day so some days you make money, some days not so much. So a lot of hotels are housing the migrants because they sign a contract with the government where the the hotel is guaranteed money for so many rooms over a given period of time. So of course the hotels opt for that since they don’t have to deal with losing money with whether customers will book or not.
The other services are provided by the NGOs who provide services to the migrants. They love the contracts because the more migrants the money they make. And how do all these companies get those contracts? They make political contributions to a certain political party. It’s a self perpetuation scheme. You drop a donation to us and we reward you with US taxpayer dollars. It’s the same old pay to play routine. And this doesn't even count the skim that so politicians are getting.
Ok...to much money going out, illegals demanding more, more illegals invading ...

It’s amazing to me that politicians and the media are so stupid that, when faced with illegal immigration at crisis levels, their solution to the problem is NOT to close the border and STOP the invasion, but instead is to keep begging for the federal government to send more money THEY DON’T HAVE to these cities so the cities can afford to pay hotels to feed and house the PEOPLE WHO SHOULDN’T BE HERE in the first place, pay to build shelters, pay to NGOs to take care of them, etc. But the OBVIOUS, common sense solution of STOP THE INVASION is never, ever mentioned.

If Chicago goes bankrupt, first they need authorization from the State. Then it goes to federal court. All contracts become null and void, to include all labor contracts teachers, police, fire, trades. Not a good prospect .
