COPA Fires Whistleblowers

This certainly isn't going to turn around and bite taxpayers in the ass:

  • Two high-ranking employees of the agency charged with investigating Chicago Police misconduct were abruptly fired Friday, just days after one of them complained to the inspector general about bias against police.

Matt Haynam, a $163,068-a-year deputy chief administrator for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, said he was summoned to a virtual meeting with COPA Chief Andrea Kersten and general counsel Robin Murphy and told he was out, effective immediately. He said no reason was given.

[...]  Shortly before being fired, Haynam said he got a text message from COPA’s $117,792-a-year supervising investigator Garrett Schaaf, who had also been summarily dismissed. Schaaf declined comment.

Haynam, 44, said he has no doubt why he was let go. “I recently made a complaint to the [inspector general] directly and was let go today effective immediately and given no justification. I’m being fired because she [Kersten] is retaliating,” Haynam told the Sun-Times.

For daring to be critical of progressive policy and attempting to point out how anti-police bias de-legitimizes the entire COPA organization, these guys are fired.

You know who comes out ahead in all this?

  • Larritorious

Because now his complaint about COPA "investigations" being biased and "outcome based" looks completely legitimate and he can point to the firings as indirect proof. He ought see about getting these two to verify his accusations directly, because you know when they sue COPA for wrongful termination, the depositions are going to be eye-opening.

If you are an officer who is currently being held in limbo, or has had a recommendation to be terminated by Copa for a shooting or anything ridiculous this is a massive win for you and all of us. For two insiders to come forward and then get fired For speaking out is going to have massive ramifications in this city and in COPA and in this department. This may not seem huge, but give it time like SCC said, when deposition start rolling, this is going to be damning. This gives absolute Legitimacy to Snellings’s beefs, the Fop’s beefs and shows that any officer who has been fired or given an exorbitant amount of time for something that should be a simple minor suspension was all personal and focused attacks on the CPD. Not only will this open the door to expose Copper directly targeting CPD, it will be shown in depositions to be willful and wanton conduct from the higher-ups in copa.. What does that mean? It means that they are now open to lawsuits from police officers who have been unjustly fired or given an exorbitant amount of time and had their cases for all to see for public display on their website. all I can say to any officer going through this, keep your head up and hopefully this gives you a breath of fresh air to relax.

This should help the lawsuit FOP filed against COPA a week or so ago.

I hope FOP reaches out to these two and deposes them right away. Whatever document, letter, telegram, or email they sent to the Inspector General should be subpoenaed for FOP's lawsuit.

Hopefully these two also file whistleblower lawsuits against Kirsten and COPA for wrongful termination. Whistleblowers have done well in court lately.

Does the Mayor know that firing any whistleblower from any job will cost the City of ChiRaq money in the end? If the current director of COPA feels there was grounds to terminate any employee they needed to have an investigation where evidence and statements are secured prior to making any termination?

So you have CPD superintendent says the investigations are bad coming out of COPA? The FOP have filed lawsuits against COPA for biased investigations? Then you have Current COPA employees making whistleblowers statements and then COPA terminated them? And the Mayor of ChiRaq will be signing a Check to those terminated for violation of whistleblowers laws and hostile work environment?

COPA, the city's despotic Kangaroo Court, is the instrument for punishment, revenge, retribution and dishonesty for perceived wrongs by CPD. Kersten, the Democratic Socialists picked dullard to head this extreme left-wing organization has blundered again. Two of her own are shining a bright light in the dark corners of COPA where hatred for the police lives and flourishes. Kersten is the epidemy of what is systemically corrupt and wrong in our broken city. Continued pressure and exposure on retaliation and reprisal against police by COPA needs to be publicly exposed by an aware media, but Chicago media are untrustworthy and possesses a strong left-wing bias. Pursue COPA and expose their wrongdoing in the courts.

Heard the city’s law Dept is scrambling to do major damage control on that one. Now we have copa doing the same thing but hammering everyone. So 2 defectors had an epiphany and told the truth and got fired for it? Watch for them to each receive a quick settlement offer with a gag order attached. FLOP and any effected POs need to have these guys lock in their statements before they no longer can. $$$ talks and those 2 whistleblowers have a price that the city will pay for their silence. Tick tock tick tock.

While the timing is suspiciously coincidental, IL is an 'at-will' state. You can be fired for any reason OR NO REASON AT ALL. The fact that the whistleblowers were not given a reason actually works in COPA's favor.

But never forget, this is Chicago. They will do everything they can to discredit the whistleblowers and try to destroy Snelling with the comments and calling her out in public on being bias.

Speaking of firing, word is CPS OIG Wil Fletcher fired himself recently by resigning. Fletcher reportedly was worried about posters on this blog outing him and suggesting the Feds look into the OIG's office.

You can't make this shut up. Fletcher was supposed to give his annual report and also hundreds more CPS employees more CPS PPP loan fraudsters at this past Thursday's Board meeting and neither took place.

Now the quarterly report is now pushed to January 2025 and the PPP loan fraud cases are put in the dumpster.

Feds were also planning to look into how Fletcher's office came upon 77,505 missing or lost laptops and tech devices while going through CPS inventory records , yet CPS themselves can't identify what schools lost what.

Also, the investigation into which employees broke policy for actively campaigning for Lightfoot and BJ during school hours and encouraging students to leave school is also closed.

Fletcher high-tailed out like ge did when interviewing Chicago Park District' superintendent Michael Kelly at the start of their lifeguard sex scandal. Oddly enough, Fletcher claimed limited resources as to why his office didn't investigate that scandal more diligently and thoroughly.

Guess what CPS office is now losing $500,000 off their budget while COPA is getting more money added to its budget? If you said the CPS OIG's office, you wìn a gift card to Dunkin.

Totally wrong! Yes Illinois is at will State. But any termination of an employee who has brought misconduct to the attention of his supervisor or employer is granted protection! And when this protection is violated with termination the employee has the rights to challenge the termination and seek damages! That’s why these two former COPA employees need to deposed and record their statement? Prior to any gag order being placed on them?

008 2nd Watch DOG: Your name suits you. You DO own the City and the Department something. And you owe you coworkers something too. You are an employee, they are an employer. Do what your told to do and if you don't like it, quit and find another job. Work harder and become a decision maker, or follow the decisions of those who do. Show up to work and do your job, that's all that's expected of you, but you don't even want to do that. You think the medical is a freebee, but with just a little effort you can be fired for abusing it. Your actions are not anonymous and can have adverse effects. I'm sure your coworkers just love you, or perhaps you see them as in agreement with your nonsense because they tolerate you being a blowhard and a dog, dumping your workload onto them. Wow, just wow.

As far as work load, I’m pretty sure I do the majority of work since most of them take hours upon hours to complete a freaking GOCR or a simple 99A. Don’t need to quit when retirement is months away and once again I don’t owe this department or city anything!

A problem with COPA conducting and providing biased reports is that the Police Board accepted them. And the Superintendent didn't stop or disagree with the findings.

Wasn't there a fatal shooting by an officer where COPA hired an outside consultant who thought the shooting was justified contrary to COPA's wishes and his findings were suppressed from the final report but the Police Board fired him anyway.
