ShotSpotter Follies Continue

If nothing else, this is entertaining politics:

  • The Chicago City Council made a significant break with Mayor Brandon Johnson, voting to give the deciding vote over ShotSpotter technology to the city’s police superintendent. The ordinance passed 33-14 in City Council chambers on Wednesday, with Johnson immediately vowing to veto the measure.

The measure passed during a special session of the City Council, and was aimed at taking the decision on whether to retain the controversial technology in place out of the mayor’s hands.

“The experts seem to think it’s a useful tool,” Ald. Bill Conway said. “Our constituents want that. Clearly a lot of my colleagues want to make sure we can keep it and find a way to do that.”

According to the measure, Supt. Larry Snelling would ultimately have the final say over whether to keep the technology in place, with a contract set to expire this month with SoundThinking, the company who maintains the network.

Conehead's allies are spouting provable lies in their effort to kill this thing:

  • While the company claims a  97% accuracy rate across all customers, but Chicago officials have argued that the technology’s alerts “rarely produce evidence of a gun-related crime, rarely give rise to investigatory stops, and even less frequently lead to the recovery of gun crime-related evidence,” according to a report from the Chicago Office of Inspector General.

The joke among the CPD, especially Districts with high incidents of gunfire, is that ShotSpotter is the "most expensive shell-casing finder in existence." We've personally been on the scene of dozens of shootings where the camera room (assisted by ShotSpotter maps) literally walked officers over to shell casings in alleys, on street corners, in vacant lots covered in tall grass, even snow banks.

If you want to argue that the tens of millions of dollars spent to save the lives of around 100 people a year would be better spent elsewhere, you aren't going to get much of an argument from us - those 100 people are usually useless gangbangers, dope dealers and assorted fiends that wouldn't be missed. But making up stories doesn't do your credibility nay favors.

Speaking of favors, do yourself one and head over to the HeyJackass.com merchandise site to check out the new "Walkie-Talkie on a Stick" t-shirts. It helps defray their operating costs.

Fuck it . . take the money and put it towards the pension fund.

One thing is for sure.
The 14 alder-things that voted against it SHOULD NOT have it in their wards.
If only Snelling had the balls to tell that to the city council half-wits.

Just get rid of it already for if no other reason, just so we don't have to hear some three year wonder that can't speak English constantly on the radio! Bottom line, if the residents don't care enough to call it in then why should I care enough to go try to find it!

. I guess the people that owned the company either did not pay off the right politician, or did not pay enough. The corruption filled alderman they could not find the right people to pay off. I’d how that works now we will have more bodies, so hopefully Brandon will use some of that money to buy more body bags. I thought he was all about protecting Black people apparently not as we can clearly see he does not care about them even though he claims he has a black wife and black children who he blames absolutely everything on because he’s a failure of the highest order. Here is protected by well over 200 police officers tens of millions of dollars being paid out every year unlimited overtime plus don’t many many of them get the bump on their pension, also security specialist, commander, or whatever title it is, they get their attention just for being a good little boy or girl, and doing what they are told as a valet

The case against Sean “Diddy” Combs seems to have picked up its pace since his arrest in a New York City hotel earlier this week. A recently unveiled federal indictment further details the extent of Combs’ alleged crimes and abuse, confirming that the charges he is currently facing stem from his alleged “Freak Off” sessions.

The indictment states that Sean “Diddy” Combs coerced women into participating in these “Freak Off” sex sessions, which he recorded, with male prostitutes while he masturbated. Court documents allege that these “Freak Offs were elaborate and produced sex performances.” These papers further stated that he “arranged, directed, masturbated during, and often electronically recorded.”

The allegations in the indictment revealed that Sean “Diddy” Combs lured his female victims into these “Freak Off” sessions by pretending to start a romantic relationship. He would later administer drugs to these women to “keep the victims obedient and compliant.” These sex sessions occurred “regularly” and often lasted for days. The accused also gave his victims IV fluids “to recover from the physical exertion and drug use” afterward.

This only matters if those are the only metrics you are looking for with Shotspotter.

If it brings medical care on scene faster (thus saving more lives), brings cops faster - thus both providing incentives *to not shoot* (until you know you can get clear before the police arrive) and for shooters to get in and get out quickly (meaning no lingering around shooting at randoms, reducing total body counts), well, these are important aspects of the installed system that should be evaluated too.

"Whether the police are effective is not measured on the number of arrests, but on the lack of crime."

This guy is afraid of his own shadow now, that’s why I am really really glad he did this so maybe the powers at be can see what the officers have to deal with ,when he made Sgt he went to 007 he begged relentlessly to come back to Forensics. For some reason which was a horrible horrible decision by the powers at be they took him back. Maybe it’s the officers fault for not going to the powers at be and letting them know how this sgt treats the officers but if anyone is reading this that has any say so either talk to him or let him go somewhere else. The job is stressful enough and now the officers have to worry about this sgt. Please

Responding to 438pm : assuming this is probably 5810 himself responding, you might have been a great guy when you were a po and you might have been a great worker but obviously when you made Sgt something happened to you. It’s a shame that sometimes people get promoted and they change. You should be a leader and not put your officers down. As someone earlier said mental health is a big topic among the Law Enforcement community and you sgt seem like you don’t care about that. It’s really a shame and is really disgraceful. Yes people make mistakes but this I am sure is no mistake if I was a betting person I would bet that you treat the officers like this quite often.
